The article discusses how the creation of the Mayflower Compact illustrates concepts of self-government and civil liberty. The author notes references to the compact, signed by the pilgrims before their arrival in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in the book "The Chronicles of the Pilgrim Fathers," edited by Alexander Young. He comments on its various designations as a compact, agreement or combination. Reverend William Hubbard chronicled the writing of the compact and noted it was intended as a temporary instrument. A patent issued to the pilgrims granting them land in America is noted.
