1. Maximum Proton Trapping Energy in the Earth Radiation Belt

Abstract

During the PAMELA satellite experiment started in 2006 onboard the Resurs-DK1 spacecraft (350–600 km, an inclination of 70°), cosmic ray charged particle fluxes in low near-Earth orbits were measured to the beginning of 2016. The data obtained during the experiment on high-energy proton (0.1–10 GeV) fluxes in the radiation belt made it possible to measure maximum proton trapping energies in various solar activity phases. The measurement results showed that the maximum proton trapping energy at L shells of 1.16–1.22 in the periods of both solar activity minimum (2009) and maximum (2014) was ∼2 GeV.

Abstract

The results from analyzing high energy (4–6 MeV) electron flux variations in the region of the outer radiation belt (L = 3–7) associated with magnetospheric disturbances during active processes on the Sun (flares, coronal mass ejections, and so on) are presented. Data from the low–Earth orbit ARINA experiment on board the Resurs-DK1 satellite (2006–2016) and the VSPLESK experiment on board the International Space Station (2008–2013) are used. The multilayered ARINA and VSPLESK scintillation spectrometers allow us to identify and record electrons in the energy range of 3–30 MeV, and to determine their energies and pitch angles. It is shown that in a period of strong solar magnetospheric disturbances, the high energy electron flux can vary strongly in the outer radiation belt, growing or falling to background values typical of the electron flux of atmospheric albedo. The amplitude and time evolution of such electron flux variations depends largely on the L shell.

Abstract

The interrelation between gamma-ray bursts of lightning origin and high-energy electron bursts registered in near-Earth space below the radiation belt is sought and investigated. Data from the ARINA and VSPLESK satellite experiments, developed to register high-energy electron bursts with energies in the range of 3–30 MeV, and the databases of the RHESSI space observatory, which contain data on gamma flashes of geophysical origin with energies of up to 17 MeV, are used. The results from analyzing electron bursts and gamma flashes that coincide up to ten minutes in time and are located on the same L-shell are presented.

Abstract

The results are presented from an analysis of proton fluxes in the inner radiation belt (RB), obtained with the ARINA spectrometer. The ARINA satellite experiment was performed on board the Russian low-orbit spacecraft Resurs-DK1 (altitude 350–600 km; inclination 70°; duration, 2006–2016). The spectrometer registered high-energy protons (30–100 MeV) with an energy resolution of 10% and an angular resolution of 7°. The geographical and pitch-angle distribution of proton flux in the inner radiation belt (1.15 < L < 2.0) were analyzed during the waning phase of the 23rd solar cycle and main part of the 24th cycle. It is shown that the proton flux intensity depends on the phase of the solar cycle (the minimum intensity is observed in the period of the solar activity maximum and vice versa) and varies by 2–7 times for different L‑shells.

Abstract

The satellite-borne PAMELA experiment studies cosmic ray spectra over a wide range of energies. The instrument was placed in orbit in June 2006 and remains there to the present day. A position-sensitive calorimeter is one of the main parts of the PAMELA instrument. The calorimeter data are used to determine the energy of particles that interact within it, separate the electron component of the detected radiation from the nuclear component, and reconstruct the tracks of particles passing through the instrument. The special calorimeter and S4 scintillation shower detector triggers enables us to expand our statistics considerably. Using the calorimeter data in generating these triggers means we can study the anisotropy of cosmic rays with energies in excess of tens of GeV. This method of anisotropy detection is based on reconstructing the direction of a particle's arrival from the axis of the secondary particle cascade in the calorimeter. ?????? 2013 Allerton Press, Inc.

Abstract

Measurements of high-energy proton fluxes (30–100 MeV) by the low-orbit satellite experiments ARINA (Resurs-DK1 satellite; inclination, ~70°; altitude, ~600 km; 2006–2016) and VSPLESK (International Space Station (ISS); inclination, ~52°; altitude, ~400 km; 2008–2013) are considered. The spectrometers have the same physical layouts, 10% energy resolution, and 7° angular resolution. Proton fluxes of different energies in the inner radiation belt (L < 2.0) are analyzed. The period of observation covers the declining phase of the 23rd solar cycle and the main part of the 24th cycle. The distribution of fluxes is analyzed for different proton energies, L-shells, and geomagnetic field inductions. It is shown that depending on the L-shell, proton fluxes can grow by up to 7 times (L = 1.16) during the Solar minimum, compared to the Solar maximum.

Abstract

Secondary electron and positron fluxes in the energy range from 3 MeV to 7 GeV were measured with the ARINA and PAMELA spectrometers onboard the Resurs-DK satellite launched on June 15, 2006 into an elliptical orbit with an inclination of 70.4° and an altitude of 350-600 km. It is shown that positrons dominate over electrons by a factor of up to 4-5 in the geomagnetic equator region (L 0.25).

Abstract

Energetic electron bursts detected in the ARINA satellite experiment during the development of the catastrophic seismic event in Japan on March 11, 2011 are analyzed. Time profiles of the daily number of particle bursts and earthquakes with magnitudes larger than 4 are compared; synchronous variation of these time profiles is detected.

The PAMELA magnetic spectrometer onboard the Resurs DK1 satellite no. 1 was put into (Earth) orbit on June 15, 2006; measurements continue at the present time. The scientific objective of the spectrometer is the study of antiproton, proton, positron, electron and light nucleus fluxes in cosmic rays. In this paper, we present the technique for measuring electron and positron spectra in the energy range from 20 to 800 GeV.

Abstract

Solar modulation of the proton flux in Galactic space radiation during the period from the end of the 23rd to the beginning of 24th cycle of solar activity is investigated using data from the PAMELA magnetic spectrometer and ARINA scintillation spectrometer. The time dependence of proton intensity is plotted, and shows typical features in a form of rises and falls against a main trend. In order to explain these, the correlation between variations in the Galactic proton flux and solar/interplanetary parameters is investigated.

Abstract

We describe the detecting system of a high-energy charged particle telescope spectrometer for a space experiment to be performed on the outer surface of the Russian section of the International Space Station and other spacecraft, including small satellites. The spectrometer’s detecting system is a multilayer scintillation detector (MSD) of polystyrene plates scanned by photomultipliers. It allows high-intensity fluxes of electrons (up to ∼105 cm−2 s−1) several milliseconds long with energies of 3 to 30 MeV to be measured with an accuracy of ∼1 μs, along with time profiles and the evolution of particle energy spectra. The MSD is characterized by an energy resolution no worse than 10%, an angular resolution of ∼10 degrees, a geometric factor of ∼40 cm2 sr, and a trigger system time resolution of ∼20 ns.

Abstract

The results from observing bursts of high-energy charged particle fluxes in near-Earth space, caused by local disturbances of the radiation belt and particles precipitating from it, in the ARINA (on board the RESURS-DKI satellite since 2006) and VSPLESK (on board the International Space Station since 2008) satellite experiments are presented. New features were revealed in the geographic distribution of particle bursts, indicating that most high-energy electron bursts are interrelated with thunderstorm and seismic activities, at that some bursts are observed in regions of tectonic faults. Results from observing high-energy electron precipitation from the radiation belt over Japan during the powerful seismic event that began on March 11, 2011, are analyzed.

Abstract

The penetration of solar cosmic rays (SCRs) from interplanetary space into the Earth’s magneto-sphere is simulated numerically. It is shown that the SCR energy spectrum observed in the magnetosphere changes when there is an anisotropic angular distribution of SCRs in interplanetary space.

Abstract

The generally accepted theory explaining the observed cosmological baryon asymmetry involves mechanisms of baryosynthesis that generate asymmetry in an initially baryon symmetric Universe. Due to the possible inhomogeneous spatial nature of such mechanisms, antimatter domains could arise in the Universe. This hypothesis can be tested by the direct measurement of fluxes of antinuclei in cosmic rays. Searching for antihelium nuclei is therefore among the objectives of the PAMELA experiment. We analyzed data from August 2006 to December 2009 and obtained a preliminary value for the upper limit of the antihelium/helium flux ratio that could lead to some restrictions on the existing theoretical models of the production and propagation of antimatter in the Galaxy. © 2011 Allerton Press, Inc.

Abstract

The results of measuring albedo deuteron fluxes in the vicinity of the Earth are presented. The data were obtained in the PAMELA experiment conducted aboard the Resurs DK-1 artificial Earth satellite. High-precision detectors of the instrument setup allow us to identify albedo deuterons and measure their spectra in the energy interval from 70 to 600 MeV/nucleon at altitudes of 350-600 km for different geomagnetic latitudes.
