Objective: To observe the clinical effectiveness of ankle three-needle acupuncture combined with ultra-laser in treating ankle sprain. Methods: There were 84 cases of ankle sprain. Random number table method was applied to divide the patients into a treatment and control group, 42 cases in each group. In the treatment group, ankle three-needle acupuncture was combined with ultra-laser to treat. In the control group, ultra-laser was applied. After two-weeks of treatment, pain was assessed via visual analogue scale (VAS), ankle and hind foot function score scale (AOFAS), and ankle joint function score (Kofoed) to evaluate clinical effectiveness. Results: After two-weeks of treatment, the VAS score in both groups was lower compared with those before the treatment. The Kofoed score and AOFAS score in both groups were superior to that before the treatment. Moreover, the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). After the treatment, VAS score of the treatment group was inferior to that of the control group. Moreover, the Kofoed score and AOFAS score in the treatment group showed statistically significant improvement compared to the control group, (P < 0.05). Total effectiveness of the treatment also showed a significant difference compared with the controls (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Application of ankle three-needle acupuncture combined with ultra-laser therapy to treat ankle sprain alleviates pain and improves ankle function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
