The ultrastructure of reinnervated Herbst corpuscles shows that the regenerating nerve branches appear in the inner zone of the receptors at the end of the first month after nerve crush. The nerve branches are accompanied by the Schwann receptor cells. Two periods of regeneration can be established. During the first period the changes reflect mainly the quantitative relations between the regenerating nerve branches and the Schwann receptor cells, whereas during the second period the intracytoplasmic and intraaxoplasmic renewal of the organelles take place. The final regeneration of the receptors finishes at the end of the fifth month after nerve crush and one month later after nerve transection. Also, after transection the number of reinnervated receptors is less encountered.

The slowly adapting abdominal stretch receptors of Orconectes limosus (RAF) have been investigated morphologically; 1. Despite their variety of size and shape all slowly adapting receptor neurons show common characteristic features which in addition distinguish them clearly from the fast adapting receptor neuron type SN2. The slightly globular cells have always several dendrites (often 4-6). They originate apical or lateral to the neuron, are oriented mainly longitudinal to the muscle fibres and are brodly ramified. The fine dendrites form a 3-dimensional fibrilar network. 2. The structure and distribution of the connective tissue in the "intertendon" of the muscle receptor organ correspond to the dendrite ramification; In this area, some muscle fibres end direktly at tendon-like connective tissue structures, but a number of different fibres run uninerruptedly through the whole muscular fascicle. 3. The perikaryon of every sensory neuron shows 2 "cytoplasm types" which are clearly distinguishable one against the other. A characteristic feature of the granular-lamellar neuroplasm that closely surrounds the nucleus are many flat vesicles of the granular endoplasmatic reticulum, accumulations of free ribosomes, numerous mitochondria and Golgi fields. The fibril-rich neuroplasm on the contrary contains only few mitochondria, but very many neurofilaments, here and there also neurotubuli. It projects directly into the dendrites and neuritek. Cell bodies, axon and dendrites are surrounded alternatingly by sheath cells and connective tissue of collagenous nature. The innermost layer of the coat cells borders directly on the neuron membrane. Finer dendrites are enclosed by nothing more but a thin layer of sheath cell plasm and intercellular substance. The dendrite terminals are either stored directly in connective tissue ground substance or border immediately on the sarcoplasm. 5. The axo-dendritic or axo-somatic synapses, respectively, contain numerous ellipsoidal (250-350 X 400-500 A), but also many spherical, vesicles. Some vesicles have a slightly larger diameter (700-900 A) and contain an electron-dense core. The synaptic gap measures 150 to 200 A. The neuromuscular (supposedly excitatory) synapses are filled much lighter with vesicles as compared with those just mentioned, which show a relatively unique form and size (nearly all spherical, phi 400-500 A). There are less vesicles with an electron-dense centre. On the average, the synaptic gap is broader (200-250 A) and the contact zone is larger. Apart from these, terminals could be observed in the dendritic ramification area, too, resembling the axo-dendritic and axo-somatic ones, respectively. 6. Finer dendrite branches contain vesicles differing slightly from those mentioned above as far as shape and size are concerned. Their diameters vary between 500 and 1 000 A. "Dense bodies" could be observed sporadically in these vesicles.

The authors studied the ultrastructure of axon processes in simple sensory corpuscles, Herbst and Pacinian corpuscles. They give a description of their shape, topographical localization and relation to organelles. They focused their attention to the incidence of various kinds of vesicles in the processes and at their bases, and the incidence and localization of of mitochondria. The most frequently occurring vesicles are those of medium electron density (clear vesicles), in small numbers there are also dense core vesicles and coated vesicles. The incidence of vesicles is predominantly polarized, i.e. they are situated at the bases of axon processes, opposite the so-called clefts of the inner core. In sporadic cases reach into the processes besides clear vesicles also mitochondria. Direct connection between axon processes and inner core lamellae was not observed. The authors are considering the possible importance of these processes in the transmission of stimuli to the axon. They are of the opinion that further studies are necessary to specify the morpho-physiological relations inside sensory corpuscles.

The ultrastructure of the spray-like ramified encapsulated corpuscles with the primitive inner core from the joint capsules of the large limb joints of the tortoise (Testudo graeca and Emys orbicularis) was examined. Each of the branches of the receptor consists of three components. Through the middle of the receptor branche runs the nerve terminal, containing in the receptor matrix numerous mitochondria, tiny light vesicles and neurofilaments and neurotubules running in the axial way. The nerve terminal gives off on some places among the inner core cells tiny finger-like processes. The axon is surrounded by the inner core cells and their irregular plasmatic processes. Among the inner core cells and their irregular plasmatic processes there is a labyrinth of spaces, connected centrally with the periaxonal space and with the boundary space on the periphery. The inner core cells are covered on the surface, turning to the boundary space by the basal membrane. The inner core has a very primitive structure, it still lacks the typical lamellar structure. The capsule of the receptor is formed by flat cells, which surround the inner core in 1--3 layers. Between the capsule of the receptor and the inner core is the boundary space, containihg sporadical collagenous fibrils. The structure of the spray-like ramified encapsulated corpuscles with the primitive inner core from the joint capsules of the tortoise is analogous to the simple lamellar receptors from the skin of some reptiles (Von Düring 1973, 1974). The primitive structure of the inner core of the joint receptors in the tortoise reminds of the structure of the inner core of the developing simple (paciniform) corpuscles (Poláĉek and Halata 1970) and Pacinian corpuscles (Malinovský 1974). The observed nerve endings represent a primitive, early stage in phylogeny development of the lamellar mechanoreceptors.

Electron microscopic and cytochemical studies of the synapses of the gravity receptors in Coelenterata, Ctenophora, Annelids and Molluscs has shown the mediators both of cholinergic and adrenergic systems. As a rule, the two mediatros were connected with different receptor systems (Ctenophora) or with the synaptic structures of various parts of the chain: receptor--neuron--effector (Medusa, Annelids). The synaptic transmission in the gravity receptor of studied molluscs classes is carried out by means of either cholinergic or adrenergic systems.

The degenerative changes in the HERBST corpusles have been investigated at ultrastructural level during the 3rd h to 1 year after nerve section. The earliest changes have been established in the nerve ending followed by the remaining nonmyelinated and myelinated portion of the receptor nerve fibre. The changes reflect the retrograde character of the degenerative process. The receptor cell elements pass through the stage of activation followed by their destruction and elimination. The Schwann receptor cells fullfill the pagocytotic role in the elimination of the axonal debris, after that they have been also completely eliminated. Their places are occupied by the activated fibroblasts and developed collagen fibrils. One part of the perineural cells persist a long time after denervation and they preserve the common although modified receptor configuration.

The first signs of reinnervation of the Pacinian corpuscles have been established at the middle of the second month after nerve crush. The regenerative process pass through two periods. During the first period the progressive increase of the Schwann receptor cells has been observed parallel to the reduction of the regenerating nerve branches. During the second period the reorganization and renewal of the regenerated organelles takes place. Some organelles as dense core vesicles, coated vesicles and microtubules of the receptor nerve fibre show noticeable dynamics. The regeneration has been established only in the preexisting after denervation capsulated remnants of the receptors. After nerve transection the regeneration is prolonged one month later and the less of quantity reinnervated receptors have been observed.

The ultrastructure of denervated Grandry corpuscles reveals the retrograde character of degenerative changes in the receptor nerve fibre. The denervation affects also the specific cell elements: the Schwann receptor cells and specialized cells. The both cell types pass through the phase of activation followed by degeneration and elimination. The process is significantly prolonged by the specialized cells. The Schwann receptor cells appear more dynamic and sensitive elements in the process of degeneration. After the full elimination of the specialized cells the denervated receptors cannot be established.
