We report the imaging of short-wavelength spin waves in a continuous nanometer-thick YIG film with a Co stripe patterned on top. Dynamic dipolar coupling between the YIG film and the Co stripe lowers the spin-wave wavelength when spin waves enter the YIG/Co bilayer region from the bare YIG film, causing partial reflection at the YIG/Co edge. We use time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy to image the mode conversion process down to a wavelength of 280 nm and extract the spin-wave dispersion, decay length, and magnetic damping in the YIG/Co bilayer. We also analyze spin-wave reflection from the YIG/Co edge and its dependence on the wavelength of incoming and transmitted spin waves.

We present time-resolved scanning x-ray microscopy measurements with picosecond photo-excitation via a tailored infrared pump laser at a scanning transmission x-ray microscope. Specifically, we image the laser-induced demagnetization and remagnetization of thin ferrimagnetic GdFe films proceeding on a few nanoseconds time scale. Controlling the heat load on the sample via additional reflector and heat-sink layers allows us to conduct destruction-free measurements at a repetition rate of \SI{50}{\mega\hertz}. Near-field enhancement of the photo-excitation and controlled annealing effects lead to laterally heterogeneous magnetization dynamics which we trace with \SI{30}{\nano\meter} spatial resolution. Our work opens new opportunities to study photo-induced dynamics on the nanometer scale, with access to picosecond to nanosecond timescales, which is of technological relevance, especially in the field of magnetism.

Being able to accurately control the interaction of spin waves is a crucial challenge for magnonics in order to offer an alternative wave-based computing scheme for certain technological applications. Especially in neural networks and neuromorphic computing, wave-based approaches can offer significant advantages over traditional CMOS-based binary computing schemes with regard to performance and power consumption. In this work, we demonstrate precise modulation of phase- and amplitude-sensitive interference of coherent spin waves in a yttrium-iron-garnet based magnonic analog adder device, while also showing the feasibility of frequency-division multiplexing. Using time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy, the interference was directly observed, giving an important proof of concept for this kind of analog computing device and its underlying working principle. Magnonics is a potential candidate for beyond CMOS and neuromorphic computing technologies with advanced phase encoded logic. However, nanoscale imaging of spin waves with full phase and magnetization amplitude information is a challenge. We show a generalized scanning transmission x-ray microscopy platform to get a complete understanding of spin waves, including the k-vector, phase, and absolute magnetization deflection angle. As an example, this is demonstrated using a 50 nm thin permalloy film where we find a maximum deflection angle of 1.5° and good agreement with the k-vector dispersion previously reported in the literature. With a spatial resolution approximately ten times better than any other methods for spin wave imaging, x-ray microscopy opens a vast range of possibilities for the observation of spin waves and various magnetic structures.

We present X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) microscopy results obtained at liquid nitrogen temperatures on the high-Tc superconductor YBCO (YBa2Cu3O7–δ). The magnetic flux distribution arising from electric currents in the superconductor is detected and visualized using soft-magnetic Co40Fe40B20 (CoFeB) as sensor layer and XMCD as contrast mechanism. It has been shown that the XMCD contrast in the sensor layer directly corresponds to magnetic flux distribution of the superconductor and hence can be used to image magnetic structures in superconductors [Stahl et al., Phys. Rev. B 90, 104515 (2014)]. The existing scanning UHV X-ray microscopy setup MAXYMUS at the synchrotron BESSY II in Berlin has been upgraded for that purpose: we use a nitrogen based MMR Micro Miniature Joule-Thompson Cryostat with temperature range from 75 K to 580 K. The capability of the method is demonstrated on two different superconducting samples, an optimally doped thin film and a melt-textured block.

We report on the observation of magnetic vortex domain wall chirality reversal in ferromagnetic rings that is controlled by the sense of rotation of a magnetic field. We use time-resolved X-ray microscopy to dynamically image the chirality-switching process and perform micromagnetic simulations to deduce the switching details from time-resolved snapshots. We find experimentally that the switching occurs within less than 4 ns and is observed in all samples with ring widths ranging from 0.5 μm to 2 μm, ring diameters between 2 μm and 5 μm, and a thickness of 30 nm, where a vortex domain wall is present in the magnetic onion state of the ring. From the magnetic contrast in the time-resolved images, we can identify effects of thermal activation, which plays a role for the switching process. Moreover, we find that the process is highly reproducible so that the domain wall chirality can be set with high fidelity.

The penetration of magnetic flux into high-temperature superconductors has been observed using a high-resolution technique based on x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Superconductors coated with thin soft-magnetic layers are observed in a scanning x-ray microscope under the influence of external magnetic fields. Resulting electric currents in the superconductor create an inhomogeneous magnetic field distribution above the superconductor and lead to a local reorientation of the ferromagnetic layer. Measuring the local magnetization of the ferromagnet by x-ray absorption microscopy with circular-polarized radiation allows the analysis of the magnetic flux distribution in the superconductor with a spatial resolution on the nanoscale.

We study the magnetization dynamics of coupled vortices in arrays of Permalloy disks via analytical calculations and scanning transmission x-ray microscopy. The Thiele approach is used to derive linear equations of motion of the vortices. Thereby, vortex motions following a nanosecond field pulse are described by a superposition of eigenmodes that depend on the vortex polarizations. Eigenmodes are calculated for a specific polarization pattern of a 3 × 3 vortex array. With magnetic field pulses distinct oscillations are excited and imaged in space and time. The calculated eigenmodes precisely describe the measured oscillations.

The dynamics of magnetic vortices in microsquares with local modifications of magnetic parameters and thickness are investigated. By implanting gallium ions with focussed ion beam into permalloy thin-film elements, we have locally tailored their magnetic properties and the layer thickness. The vortex of the Landau domain pattern of a square is resonantly excited to a gyrotropic motion and crosses regions with and without implantation. With time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy, we observe an abrupt change in the vortex velocity close to the borders between the two regions.

When switching the vortex core in a magnetic disc by a short excitation with an in-plane field, there is an initial global excitation of the magnetization due to a precession of the magnetization in the spatially homogeneous field. Then an energy transport from this global excitation towards the center of the disc takes place leading to a concentration of the energy close to the vortex core which suffices to switch the core. Because this transport requires time, there is a delay between the end of the excitation and the switching. This is demonstrated for switching by in-plane rotating GHz rf-bursts.

We study the magnetization dynamics in a stray-field coupled pair of ferromagnetic squares in the vortex state. Micromagnetic simulations give an idea of the mediating stray field during vortex gyration. The frequency-dependent phase relation between the vortices in the spatially separated squares is studied using time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy while one element is harmonically excited via an alternating magnetic field. It is shown that the normal modes of coupled vortex-core motion can be understood as an attractive (low-frequency) and a repulsive (high-frequency) mode of the effective magnetic moments of the microstructures.

We study the vortex-core dynamics in a chain of three stray-field coupled permalloy squares. Time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy is employed to image the out-of-plane magnetization of the cores. After exciting the first element via a short in-plane magnetic field pulse, the excitation can be transferred through the chain via dipolar interaction. The transfer efficiency of the gyrotropic vortex motion strongly depends on the configuration of the core polarizations. For alternating polarizations, a transfer efficiency of about 56% to the third square is achieved. The chain can be switched back and forth between the transmitting and a locking state.
