Calorimetric low temperature detectors have the potential to become powerful tools for applications in many fields of heavy ion physics. A brief overview of heavy ion physics is given, and the next generation heavy ion facility FAIR is described with a special emphasis on the potential advantage of Low Temperature Detectors (LTDs) for applications in heavy ion physics. For prototype LTDs for the energy sensitive detection of heavy ions excellent results with respect to energy resolution down to ▵E/E = 1–2×10−3 for a wide range of incident energies, and with respect to other detector properties, such as energy linearity with no indication of pulse height defects even for the heaviest ions, have been obtained. In addition, prototype detectors for hard X‐rays have shown energy resolutions down to ▵E = 30–40eV @ 60 keV. The energy dependence of the reaction cross section and its tensor analyzing power Treac20 has been measured for the 7Li‐51V interaction by two different methods. The tensor analyzing power data can be interpreted as caused entirely by the static deformation of the 7Li‐ions.

Angular distributions of the cross section and of the vector analyzing power for the 58Ni(7L↘i, 6Li)59Ni reaction leading to several groups of levels in the final nucleus have been measured at ELi=20.3 MeV. A pronounced Q‐value dependence of the vector analyzing power has been observed which to a large extent can be attributed to a kinematical effect caused by the polarization of the intrinsic angular momentum of the transferred neutron in 7Li.

The depolarization of alkali beams during ionization on hot metal surfaces has been investigated. The polarization of the ionized beam was detected by beam‐foil spectroscopy.

The present status of the ion source is described. For the first time a polarized 23Na beam could be accelerated. Values up to t20=0.24 have been observed for the polarization of a 23Na9+ beam.

Reactions of various spin types are discussed in respect to their use as calibrator and monitor for polarized heavy ion beams. The first results obtained with a ‘‘Doppler‐shift’’ polarimeter are also presented.

A new experimental method to determine nuclear electric quadrupole moments using aligned heavy ion beams is presented. From the Coulomb scattering of an aligned 7Li beam the electric quadrupole moment of 7Li was determined to be Q=(−34±6)emb.

For the 7Li‐58Ni elastic scattering angular distributions of the differential cross section and of the vector analyzing power at ELi=20.3 MeV and of the tensor analyzing power TT20 at ELi=18.0, 20.3 and 22.0 MeV are analyzed within the diffraction model. The data for TT20 have been measured for this purpose.

Data for the elastic scattering of tensor polarized 7Li on 58Ni at ELi=20.3 MeV can be described with an optical potential which includes a complex TR tensor interaction. The strength of the tensor term is determined by the parameter of the central potential and by the deformation of the 7Li nucleus.

Elastic and inelastic (projectile excitation) scattering of vector polarized 7Li on 58Ni has been investigated at ELi=20.3 MeV. The vector analyzing power for elastic scattering surprisingly turns out to be negative.

First results on the production of polarized 8Li and 12B by vector polarized 7LI beams are reported. The polarization transferred to the residual nuclei was measured by detecting the resulting β‐asymmetries.
