The production of muon pairs has been studied in p+U, O+U, and S+U collisions at 200 GeV per nucleon, as a function or the atomic number of the projectile or of the energy density reached. Features of J/ψ, φ, and ρ−ω vector mesons production, which are respectively suppressed, enhanced, and approximately constant as compared to mass continuum events, are in agreement with predictions based on quark‐gluon plasma formation, and put severe constraints on a purely hadronic description of ultrarelativistic nucleus‐nucleus collisions.
