Preeclampsia is a disease characterized by hypertension and significant proteinuria that occurs after the twentieth week of pregnancy. The presence of mechanisms that detoxify free oxygen radicals associated with increased oxygen consumption in preeclampsia is very important. In mitochondrial and microsomal systems, molecular oxygen is reduced by taking an electron and superoxide radical is formed which is an unstable structure. Superoxide Dismutase is a metalloenzyme which converts superoxide radical to Hydrogen Peroxide. Glutathione Peroxidase degrades hydrogen peroxide by converting it into water and molecular oxygen using glutathione.
