Historical trends are presented by patient age from 2000 through 2016 using the National (Nationwide) Inpatient Sample (NIS). Characteristics of inpatient stays with and without SCD are examined in 2016, overall and by whether SCD (i.e., a principal diagnosis) or a secondary diagnosis (i.e., a condition that coexists at the time of the inpatient stay) was the reason for the stay. SCD-related stays are examined with respect to whether a pain crisis was present. Additionally, costs, length of stay, and 30-day all-cause readmission rates following stays involving SCD are provided. Finally, the location of inpatient hospital care for patients with SCD is shown. Because of the large sample size of the HCUP NIS, small differences can be statistically significant. This Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) Statistical Brief presents statistics on initial and subsequent TBI-related inpatient stays and treat-and-release emergency department (ED) visits (i.e., those that do not result in admission to the same hospital) using the 2017 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) and the 2017 Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS). Readmission rates following inpatient stays for TBI-related injuries also are presented using the 2017 Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD). TBIs are categorized as those involving cerebral hemorrhage; mild to severe TBIs without cerebral hemorrhage, but that involve injuries more complex than concussion (e.g., cerebral edema); and uncomplicated concussion. First, patient and injury-related characteristics of inpatient stays and ED visits with any TBI diagnosis (principal or secondary) are shown. Second, outcomes of inpatient stays with a principal diagnosis of TBI are described, including length of stay, average cost per stay, and rates of in-hospital mortality and all-cause 30-day readmissions. Because of the large sample size of the HCUP NIS, NEDS, and NRD small differences can be statistically significant. This Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) Statistical Brief presents statistics on ILI-related ED visits from 2016 through 2018. The HCUP State Inpatient Databases (SID) were used to identify ED visits resulting in inpatient admission, and the State Emergency Department Databases (SEDD) were used to identify treat-and-release ED visits from 34 States and the District of Columbia. Three measures characterize ILI-related ED utilization: the population rate of ED visits involving ILI, the percentage of ILI-related ED visits resulting in inpatient admission, and the percentage of total ED visits involving ILI—a measure of the transmissibility and clinical severity of an influenza epidemic. 3 First, monthly trends in ED visits involving ILI are shown. Second, the three metrics are examined across patient and community characteristics. Finally, State variation in the population rate of ILI-related ED visits is shown overall and by age, race/ethnicity, and location of residence. Race/ethnicity statistics are presented for a subset of 27 States with reliable data on race/ethnicity.
