Abstract

Aggregate computing is proposed as a computational model and associated toolchain to engineer adaptive large-scale situated systems, including IoT and wearable computing systems. Though originated in the context of WSN-like (peer-to-peer and fully distributed) systems, we argue it is a model that can transparently fit a variety of execution platforms (decentralised, server-mediated, cloud/fog-oriented), due to its ability of declaratively designing systems by global-level abstractions: it opens the possibility of intrinsically supporting forms of load balancing, elasticity and toleration of medium- and long-term changes of computational infrastructures. To ground the discussion, we present ongoing work in the context of scafi, a language and platform support for computational fields based on the Scala programming language and Akka actor framework.

Abstract

The notion of a computational field has been proposed as a unifying abstraction for developing distributed systems, focusing on the computations and coordination of aggregates of devices instead of individual behavior. Prior field-based languages, however, have suffered from a number of practical limitations that have posed barriers to adoption and use. We address these limitations by introduction of Protelis, a functional language based on computational fields and embedded in Java, thereby enabling the construction of widely reusable components of aggregate systems. We demonstrate the simplicity of Protelis integration and programming through two examples: simulation of a pervasive computing scenario in the Alchemist simulator [24], and coordinated management of a network of services.

Abstract

Subjective and objective coordination can be integrated and exploited fruitfully in the same context. In this paper we investigate such integration in multi-agent systems, in particular taking as a reference context FIPA agents — typically adopting subjective approaches — aiming at exploiting the coordination services provided by TuCSoN objective coordination infrastructure.
