This paper presents a new perspective of the probability ranking principle (PRP) by defining retrieval effectiveness in terms of our novel expected rank measure of a set of documents for a particular query. This perspective is based on preserving decision preferences, and it imposes weaker conditions on PRP than the utility-theoretic perspective of PRP.

SB-Tree is a binary tree data structure proposed to represent time series according to the importance of data points. Its use in stock data management is distinguished by preserving the critical data points' attribute values, retrieving time series data according to the importance of data points and facilitating multi-resolution time series retrieval. As new stock data are available continuously, an effective updating mechanism for SB-Tree is needed. In this paper, a study of different updating approaches is reported. Three families of updating methods are proposed. They are periodic rebuild, batch update and point-by-point update. Their efficiency, effectiveness and characteristics are compared and reported.

We propose a novel probabilistic retrieval model which weights terms according to their contexts in documents. The term weighting function of our model is similar to the language model and the binary independence model. The retrospective experiments (i.e., relevance information is present) illustrate the potential of our probabilistic context-based retrieval where the precision at the top 30 documents is about 43% for TREC-6 data and 52% for TREC-7 data.

Retrieval effectiveness depends on how terms are extracted and indexed. For Chinese text (and others like Japanese and Korean), there are no space to delimit words. Indexing using hybrid terms (i.e. words and bigrams) were able to achieve the best precision amongst homogenous terms at a lower storage cost than indexing with bigrams. However, this was tested with conjunctive queries. Here, we extended the weighted Boolean models using fuzzy and p-norm measures, as well as the vector space model using the cosine measure, for processing hybrid terms. Our evaluation shows that all IR models using hybrid terms achieve better average precision over those using words. Across different recall values, the weighted Boolean model using fuzzy measures with hybrid terms achieve consistently about 8% higher than those using words. The vector space model using the cosine measures with hybrid terms achieved the best improvement in the average recall and precision.
