A previously undescribed phenolic glycoside (manglycoside A, 1), as well as 16 identified compounds (2-17), were isolated from the leaves and twigs of the 'vulnerable' plant Magnolia decidua (Magnoliaceae). Comprehensive spectroscopic investigation and chemical transformations revealed the structure of the previously unknown compound 1. Among the isolates, honokiol (6) and liriodenine (14) were discovered to exhibit antiinflammatory activities in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells via reducing nitric oxide (NO) formation, with IC50 values of 4.3 and 17.3 µM, correspondingly. A pair of unique diastereoisomers of norlignan glycosides named cephalotanols A (1) and B (2), together with two known compounds, have been isolated from the twigs and leaves of Cephalotaxus fortunei Hook. Their structures were elucidated by using a combination of spectroscopic techniques and comparison of experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) data. To our knowledge, cephalotanols A and B represent the first rearranged norlignan glycosides with diphenylvinylcyclopropane core found in natural sources, of which biosynthetic pathways originating from co-occurring precursors 3S-4"-O-β-D -glucopyranosylhinokiresinol (3) and 3S-4"-O-β-D -glucopyranosylhinokiresinol (4) via di-π-methane rearrangement is proposed. The leaves, twigs and ripe fruits of Magnolia grandis (Hu & W.C.Cheng) V.S.Kumar, growing wild in Ha Giang Province of Vietnam, were hydrodistilled to obtain essential oils which had the respective average yields of 0.09%, 0.25% and 0.62% (v/w), calculated on a dry weight basis. The oils were analyzed using gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Major components of these three oil samples were: α-pinene (11.8%), linalool (15.4%) and (E)-β-caryophyllene (10.7%) (leaf oil); α-pinene (42.8%) and β-pinene (23.7%) (twig oil); α-pinene (52.2%) (ripe fruit oil). The essential oils from leaves showed stronger inhibitory effects on the seven tested microorganism strains than those from twigs and ripe fruits. The essential oils from leaves and twigs of Magnolia hookeri var. longirostrata D.X.Li & R.Z.Zhou and Magnolia insignis Wall., growing wild in Ha Giang Province of Vietnam, were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS). The respective yields of the M. hookeri var. longirostrata leaf and twig oils were 0.14% and 0.05% (v/w), and of the M. insignis leaf and twig oils were 0.16% and 0.05% (v/w), calculated on a dry weight basis. Major components of the oils of M. hookeri var. longirostrata were: Linalool (21.3%), (E)-nerolidol (12.2%) and neo-intermedeol (13.5%) (leaf oil); 1,8-cineole (13.3%) and linalool (17.1%) (twig oil). Major components of the oils of M. insignis were: Linalool (24.1%), geraniol (14.9%) and (E)-nerolidol (22.5%) (leaf oil); 1,8-cineole (9.5%) and linalool (26.9%) (twig oil). The essential oils from M. insignis showed stronger inhibitory effects on the seven test microorganisms than those from M. hookeri var. longirostrata. Candida albicans and Lactobacillus fermentum were more sensitive to the essential oils than the other tested microorganisms. A new monocyclic diterpenoid, cassipouryl formate, (1) together with three known diterpenoids (2-4) and five known sesquiterpenoids (5-9) were isolated from the twigs and leaves of Syzygium fluviatile. The new isolate was elucidated by various spectroscopic technologies. A new stilbene dimer, caesalstilbene A (1), along with twelve known compounds were isolated from the twigs and leaves of Caesalpinia cucullata Roxb by means of various chromatographic techniques. Their structures were identified on the basis of NMR spectral analysis and comparing their spectral data with those reported in the literatures. The absolute configuration of 1 was assigned by the comparison of the experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism spectra. Compound 1 was evaluated for their cytotoxicity on HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, MCF-7 and SW-480 human cancer cell lines, but it was inactive. A new furanoisoflavone, 2'-methoxy-4',5'-methylenedioxy-[2'',3'':7,8] furanoisoflavone, leptobotryanone (1), and a new natural O-prenylated isoflavone, 4'-γ,γ-dimethylallyloxy-5,7-dihydroxyisoflavone (2), were isolated from the twigs of Millettia leptobotrya, together with twelve known flavonoids, 4'-γ,γ- dimethylallyloxy-5-hydroxy-7-methoxyisoflavone (3), 2',6,7-trimethoxy-4',5'-methylenedioxyisoflavone (4), 2',7-dimethoxy-4',5'-methylenedioxyisoflavone (5), maximaisoflavone B (6), medicarpin (7) , maackiain (8), genistein (9), biochanin A (10), prunetin (11), chrysoeriol (12), kaempferol (13) and desmoxyphyllin A (14) The structures of new compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data interpretation, including 1D and 2D NMR and HREIMS. The aim of the study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity of extracts of aerial tissues (i.e. flowers, leaves, stems, twigs and berries) of the mistletoe Loranthus europaeus that grow on oak trees in a natural forest, in the mainland of Greece. Total phenolic content and antioxidant potential of aerial issues of L. europaeus was evaluated by the Folin-Ciocalteu method, the Ferric reducing antioxidant power assay, the free radical DPPH scavenging and the Co(II)/EDTA induced luminol plateau chemiluminescence assay.
