The literature has traditionally lauded high status labels for their positive impact on the recipients of such labels. High status individuals have been viewed as reaping a wide range of psychological and performance-related benefits. High status labels have been equally touted in the creativity literature where high status is assumed to consistently enhance individual creative performance. While the extant research has underscored the "up-side" of high status, this conceptual paper draws attention to the potentially double-edged sword of high status labels. Specifically, by drawing upon extant research and theory, we present a framework for understanding how high status labels have the capacity to impede individual creativity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
