A green, low-cost, high-performance Fe/N co-doped biochar material (Fe-N@C) was synthesized using salvaged cyanobacteria without other extra precursors for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and ofloxacin (OFX) degradation. With the increased pyrolysis temperature, the graphitization degree, the specific surface area and the corresponding groups like OH, COO etc. for Fe-N@C tended to increase, resulting in a greater OFX adsorption. However, the total amount of Fe-N X and graphitic nitrogen groups in the Fe-N@C composites was firstly increased and then decreased, which reached the highest at 800 °C (Fe-N@C-800). All these changes of functional species ascribed to the strong interaction between Fe, N and C led to the highest defect degree of Fe-N@C-800, resulting the highest OFX removal efficiency of 95.0 %. OFX removal experiments indicated the adsorption process promoted the total OFX degradation for different functional groups on Fe-N@C composites separately dominated the process of OFX adsorption and PMS catalysis. Radical quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements proved free radical and non-free radical pathways participated in Fe-N@C/PMS system. The non-free radicals based on 1O 2 and high-valent iron-oxo species played a more important role in OFX degradation, leading to the minimal effect of co-existing anions and the high universality for other antibiotic pollutants. Fe-N X was utilized as the main catalytic sites and graphitic nitrogen contributed more to the electron transfer for PMS activation, whose synergistic effect efficiently facilitated OFX degradation. Finally, the possible degradation route of OFX in the Fe-N@C-800/PMS system was proposed. This work aimed to develop a feasible technology to reuse dead pig biowaste for heavy metals removal, which was first carbonized into pig bone char (PBC) after pyrolysis and further functionalized with amino (NH 2) to improve its affinity with heavy metals. The application of PBC after NH 2 -functionalization for aqueous heavy metals removal was explored, including Pb2+, Cu2+, and different complex Cu(II) species. PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 showed comparable performance with AC@SiO 2 -NH 2. The adsorption capacity of Pb2+ and Cu2+ by PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 was 120 and 30 mg g−1, respectively. The NH 2 functionalization enhanced the adsorption of complex Cu(II) species, and PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 exhibited good performance under a wide pH range and coexisting ions. The adsorption of Cu(II) EDTA species with an EDTA/Cu(II) molar ratio of 1.0 by PBC would be enhanced ~3 times and ~6 times after NH 2 functionalization and further addition of Fe3+, respectively. The results of EDX, elemental mapping, and XPS confirmed the adsorption of Cu(II) species. The adsorption kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamics of different Cu(II) species by PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 were investigated. The regeneration of PBC@SiO 2 -NH 2 was easily performed via acidic wash. Mechanochemical (MC) remediation with zero-valent iron (ZVI) as co-milling agent enables the non-combustion and solvent-free disposal of solid halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs) via solid-phase reaction, but suffers from incomplete dechlorination (especially for less chlorinated chemicals). Herein, a reduction-oxidation coupling strategy using ZVI and peroxydisulfate as synergistic (ZVI-PDS) co-milling agents was investigated, with 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) as probe contaminant. By revisiting the MC destruction process of 2,4-DCP by ZVI, the contribution of both reductive and oxidative routes is confirmed, and the inefficient •OH generation is addressed. With ball-to-material and reagent-to-pollutant mass ratios of 30:1 and 13:1, respectively, ZVI-PDS achieves higher dechlorination ratio (86.8%) for 2,4-DCP within 5 h, outcompeting sole ZVI (40.3%) or PDS (33.9%), due to the accumulation of numerous SO 4 •−. As suggested by a two-compartment kinetic model, the optimal ZVI/PDS molar ratio of 4:1 is determined, which balances the relative contribution of reductive/oxidative routes and leads to a maximum mineralization efficiency of 77.4%. The analysis on product distribution verifies the generation of dechlorinated, ring-opening and minor coupling products (with low acute toxicity). This work validates the necessity to couple reduction with oxidation in MC destruction for solid HOPs, and may provide information on reagent formulation. Filter is an important component in the air-conditioning system. The airborne microorganisms can be intercepted and further multiply on the filter, which might cause a secondary pollution. The present work proposed a SiC composite filter (SCF), namely combining the filter with the absorbing material SiC. The disinfection efficiency (η) and mechanism of the microwave radiation method (MRM) on E. coli and S. aureus attached to the SCF were experimentally explored. The impacts of the microwave power (P) and disinfection time (t) on η were investigated. The results show that the SCF can be heated well by the microwave, but the normal filter (NF) cannot. The MRM can effectively and rapidly disinfect bacteria on the SCF at a sufficiently high P and an appropriate t. Generally, η increases with P and t. Under a specific P , η can be only increased with t at a certain range and a peak η might be reached. When this peak is achieved, η will not be further increased with t. The disinfection by the MRM is attributed to the thermal and non-thermal effects. Specially, at P = 600 W and t = 10 min, the non-thermal effect contributes about 89.6% to the disinfection of the E. coli and about 43.1% to the S. aureus. A universal relationship between η and temperature is given for E. coli and S. aureus to predict η at various P and t. Finally, the effective temperatures required by the MRM to satisfactorily disinfect bacteria on the SCF are identified, i.e., about 41 °C for E. coli and 71 °C for S. aureus. Abstract: Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were synthesized for treatment of Aroclor 1242, in order to evaluate their applicability for in situ remediation of groundwater and soil contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Our experimental results indicate that the total PCB concentration changed during the reduction of 3,5-dichlorobiphenyl (PCB 14), and biphenyl was produced as the final product. Initially, the concentration of 3-chlorobiphenyl (PCB 2) was increased in the prophase reaction and then slowly decreased, suggesting that Aroclor 1242 was first adsorbed by Ni/Fe nanoparticles, and then, the higher chlorinated congeners were converted gradually to the lower chlorinated congeners, and finally to biphenyl. The dechlorination efficiency of Aroclor 1242 reached approximately 80% at 25°C in just 5h, then 95.6% and 95.8% in 10h and 24h, respectively. The study revealed that high Ni/Fe nanoparticle dosage and high Ni content in Ni/Fe nanoparticles favor the catalytic dechlorination reaction. Moreover, a comparison of different types of catalysts on the dechlorination of Aroclor 1242 indicated that Ni/Mg and Mg powders showed a greater reactivity than Ni/Fe and Fe nanoparticles, respectively. Abstract: For the first time, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)–Fe3O4 nanocomposites, prepared by an in situ reduction method, are employed for chromium(VI) removal in aqueous environment. 96.4% Cr(VI) could be removed by these novel materials within 2h under pH of 8.0 and initial Cr concentration of 20mgL−1, compared with 48.8% by bare nFe3O4 and 18.8% by bare nZVI. Effects of several factors, including mass composition of nZVI–Fe3O4 nanocomposites, initial pH and Cr(VI) concentration, were evaluated. The optimal ratio of nFe3O4 to nZVI mass lies at 12:1 with a fixed nZVI concentration of 0.05gL−1. Low pH and initial Cr(VI) concentration could increase both the Cr(VI) removal efficiency and reaction rate. Corresponding reaction kinetics fitted well with the pseudo second-order adsorption model. Free energy change (ΔG) of this reaction was calculated to be −4.6kJmol−1 by thermodynamic study, which confirmed its spontaneous and endothermic characteristic. The experimental data could be well described by the Langmuir and Freundlich model, and the maximum capacity (q max) obtained from the Langmuir model was 100 and 29.43mgg−1 at pH 3.0 and 8.0, respectively. The reaction mechanism was discussed in terms of the mutual benefit brought by the electron transfer from Fe0 to Fe3O4. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Acid treatment is a routine demineralization process to obtain black carbon (BC), but there has been little systematic research about its influence on BC’s characteristics. In this study, elemental analysis, SEM, FTIR, and Boehm titration were used to investigate that effect. Our results showed that the acid treatment had little influence on the sorption of fly ash and soot to pentachlorophenol (PCP), but it greatly increased the sorption of rice chars to PCP. There were two competing effects of acid demineralization on the adsorption capacity of BC. On one hand, it increased the amount of the acidic functional groups, which decreased the adsorption capacity. On the other hand, it increased the surface and pore volume of BC and caused the emergence of hidden carbon enclosed by minerals, which in turn increased the sorptivity significantly. Especially for rice chars (600°C), after acid treatment, their surface area increased from 3.52 to 235m2 g−1 and the sorption capacity coefficient increased from 2.12 to 4.10. Abstract: Objective : Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the essential causative factor in cervical carcinogenesis, and apoptosis inhibition is one of the key features of HPV-induced malignant transformation. This study is to investigate the possible cause–effect association between high-risk HPV and cellular FLICE-like inhibitory protein (c-FLIP), an important apoptosis regulator, during cervical carcinogenesis. Methods : A series of 80 archival samples, including 20 squamous cervical carcinomas (SCC) 54 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) lesions and 6 normal cervical tissues, were subjected for c-FLIP immunohistochemical staining and HPV HC-II analysis. Typing HPV-16 infection was analyzed by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and its status was assessed with the integrity and disruption of the HPV-16 E2 gene, which was amplified in three overlapping fragments. Results : The types of HR-HPV infection and E2 disruption were associated closely with cervical lesion severity. There was a significant relationship between lesion grade and c-FLIP expression level. c-FLIP overexpression was also closely associated with HR-HPV infection and its integration status. Multivariate regression analysis revealed c-FLIP as a strong independent predictor for CIN, with 100% PPV, and showed 90.9% PPV in detecting HR-HPV, and remained a significance factor to rule out which case has no HR-HPV integration, with a 94.7% sensitivity and a 90.0% NPV. Conclusions : The present data approved that c-FLIP overexpression is related significantly to the presence of HR-HPV infection and its integration status during progression of cervical squamous cell cancer and confirmed the role of c-FLIP as an early marker of cervical carcinogenesis. Sulfide-modified nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) has excellent reducing performance for heavy metals in water. The influence of environmental factors on the reactivity can be used to explore the practical feasibility of S-nZVI and analyze the reaction mechanism in depth. This study compared the removal effect and mechanism of Cu2+ and Ni2+ by nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI), S-nZVI, and carboxymethyl cellulose-modified nanoscale zerovalent iron (CMC-nZVI). The results show that the pseudo-first-order kinetic constant of Cu2+ removal by nZVI, S-nZVI, and CMC-nZVI was 1.384, 1.919, and 2.890 min−1, respectively, and the rate of Ni2+ removal was 0.304, 0.931, and 0.360 min−1, respectively. The removal mechanism of S-nZVI was similar to that of nZVI and CMC-nZVI. Specifically, Cu2+ was predominantly removed by reduction, while Ni2+ removal included adsorption and reduction. Environmental factors had a specific inhibitory effect on the removal of Cu2+ but had a negligible impact on Ni2+. The condition of low pH, the presence of Cl− and humic acid (HA) promoted the corrosion consumption of Fe0, in which H+ directly corroded Fe0 at low pH. At the same time, Cl− and HA inhibited the adsorption or binding of heavy metal ions on the particle surface, thereby reducing the electron transfer and utilization efficiency. The passivation of NO 3 - reduced the anaerobic corrosion of the material in water but suppressed the release of electrons, thereby reducing the reduction efficiency of the three types of materials. The anaerobic corrosion of S-nZVI was less affected by environmental factors, and it can still maintain more than 80% of the electronic utilization efficiency under different environmental factors, which illustrates that S-nZVI has broad prospects for practical applications in heavy metal polluted water.
