Intrathecal delivery of interleukin-10 (IL-10) gene therapy has been reported to be effective in suppressing pain enhancement in a variety of rodent models. However, all publications that have tested this treatment have relied upon measures of static allodynia (von Frey test) and thermal hyperalgesia (Hargreaves test). As this plasmid DNA IL-10 (pDNA-IL10) therapeutic approach is now in human clinical trials for multiple pain indications, including intrathecal delivery for human neuropathic pain, it is important to consider the recent concerns raised in the pain field that such tests reflect spinal rather than supraspinal processing of, and responsivity to, noxious stimuli. Consequently, this raises the question of whether intrathecal pDNA-IL10 can reverse established neuropathic pain when assessed by a test requiring supraspinal, rather than solely spinal, mediation of the behavioral response. The present study utilizes the rat sciatic chronic constriction injury (CCI) model of neuropathic pain to compare the expression of static allodynia with that of cognitively controlled choice behavior in a two-arm maze, adapted from Hayashida et al. (2019). This modification, termed the Two-Arm Rodent Somatosensory (TARS) task, provides rats free choice to reach a desired goal box via a short "arm" of the maze with tactile probes as flooring versus a longer "arm" of the maze with a smooth surface. Here we demonstrate that static allodynia and avoidance of the nociceptive flooring in TARS develop in parallel over time, and that both behaviors also resolve in parallel following intrathecal pDNA-IL10 gene therapy. Details for the construction and use of this new maze design are also provided. Together, this study documents both: (a) the important finding that intrathecal IL-10 gene therapy does indeed resolve neuropathic pain as measured by a supraspinally-mediated behavioral task, and (b) a new, supraspinally-mediated task that allows behavioral assessments across weeks and allows the analysis of both development and resolution of neuropathic pain by therapeutic interventions. As such, the TARS operant behavior task is an improvement over other approaches such as the mechanical conflict-avoidance system which have difficulties demonstrating development and reversal of pain behavior in a within-subject design. • Infralimbic cortex supports expression of both punishment and extinction learning. • Inactivating infralimbic cortex impairs expression of punishment and extinction. • Infralimbic inactivation does not affect response suppression in a two-response design. • Under certain conditions, response suppression does not require infralimbic cortex. Learning to stop responding is a fundamental process in instrumental learning. Animals may learn to stop responding under a variety of conditions that include punishment—where the response earns an aversive stimulus in addition to a reinforcer—and extinction—where a reinforced response now earns nothing at all. Recent research suggests that punishment and extinction may be related manifestations of a common retroactive interference process. In both paradigms, animals learn to stop performing a specific response in a specific context, suggesting direct inhibition of the response by the context. This process may depend on the infralimbic cortex (IL), which has been implicated in a variety of interference-based learning paradigms including extinction and habit learning. Despite the behavioral parallels between extinction and punishment, a corresponding role for IL in punishment has not been identified. Here we report that, in a simple arrangement where either punishment or extinction was conducted in a context that differed from the context in which the behavior was first acquired, IL inactivation reduced response suppression in the inhibitory context, but not responding when it "renewed" in the original context. In a more complex arrangement in which two responses were first trained in different contexts and then extinguished or punished in the opposite one, IL inactivation had no effect. • Effortful control was positively associated with preschool children's instrumental lie-telling behavior. • False belief had no significant relationship with instrumental lie-telling behavior. • Sympathy was negatively associated with lie-telling behavior for older children but had no effect among younger children. • None of the study variables predicted instrumental lie maintenance. This study aimed to examine the predictors of instrumental lies in preschool children, specifically focusing on false belief, effortful control, and sympathy. Instrumental lies are intentional falsehoods used to achieve personal goals such as avoiding punishment and obtaining an undeserved reward. A total of 192 preschool children (age range = 32–73 month-olds), along with their mothers and fathers, participated in the study. The Temptation Resistance Paradigm, an experimental task, was employed to elicit instrumental lies from the children. The children also completed first-order false belief measures, and their parents filled out questionnaires assessing their children's effortful control and sympathy skills. Results revealed a positive association between children's effortful control and their decisions to tell instrumental lies. However, no significant relationship was found between false belief and instrumental lying. Age moderated the link between sympathy and the decision to tell instrumental lies, with sympathy being negatively associated with lie-telling behavior among older children but showing no effect among younger children. The study variables did not predict the maintenance of instrumental lies. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the role of effortful control and sympathy as underlying temperamental and emotional processes influencing children's decisions to engage in instrumental lie-telling. Limited research exists on how the transition towards more sustainable eating takes place at the meso-level of family decision-making, or how children and adolescents engage in and possibly influence the process towards more sustainable diets in families. In this paper, we study how public recommendations that encourage reducing the consumption of meat for the benefit of both health and climate are interpreted, negotiated, and acted upon in Danish families with adolescents (aged 15–20) residing at home. We use novel methodological stimuli, including vignettes and a visual sorting task, embedded in qualitative, in-depth interviews to elicit data on parents' and adolescents' everyday meat consumption/reduction behaviours. Findings reveal that a desire to uphold harmony and family cohesion serves as simultaneous drivers and barriers to reducing meat consumption. Further, we identify barriers to change in the gendered work hidden in the tasks of planning the integration of more sustainable, green dishes into the meal repertoires. Implications are drawn for social marketers, marketers, and public policymakers, encouraging these to use insights into family food decision-making processes as a lever to facilitate the needed green transition of diets in family households. ABA renewal is one type of operant renewal in which a target response is reinforced in a unique context (i.e., Context A), extinguished in novel context (i.e., Context B), and then recurs following a transition back to the original context. Recently, researchers have examined the robust phenomenon of ABA renewal when differential reinforcement of an alternative response is included in Context B and the renewal test. One method to mitigate ABA renewal is to program common stimuli so as to increase the similarity between Context A and Context B. This stimulus control strategy may support the generalization of behavior change between contexts. Currently, no studies exist on how to empirically derive the selection of the stimuli to program into Context B. We conducted a preliminary investigation using eye-tracking software to empirically determine which common stimulus to program into a three-phase ABA renewal arrangement that included differential reinforcement for 12 undergraduate students in a translational preparation. Our results replicate previous research demonstrating ABA renewal despite differential reinforcement contingencies. Further, ABA renewal may be less robust and more variable when common stimuli selected for programming are empirically determined using eye-tracking software. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Manganese (Mn) is essential to healthy neurodevelopment, but both Mn deficiency and over-exposure have been linked to prefrontal cortex (PFC) impairments, the brain region that regulates cognitive and neurobehavioral processes responsible for spatial memory, learning, motivation, and time perception. These processes facilitated by attention, inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility are often sexually dimorphic and complex, driven by multiple interconnected neurologic and cognitive domains. We investigated the role of child sex as an effect modifier of the association between prenatal Mn exposure and performance in an operant testing battery (OTB) that assessed multiple cognitive and behavioral functional domains. Children (N = 575) aged 6–8 years completed five OTB tasks. Blood and urinary Mn measurements were collected from mothers in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Multiple regression models estimated the association between Mn biomarkers at each trimester with OTB performance while adjusting for socio-demographic covariates. Covariate-adjusted weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression models were used to estimate the association of a Mn multi-media biomarker (MMB) mixture with OTB performance. Interaction terms were used to estimate modification effect by child sex. Higher blood Mn exposure was associated with better response rates (more motivation) on the progressive ratio task and higher overall accuracy on the delayed matching-to-sample task. In the WQS models, the MMB mixture was associated with better response rates (more motivation) on the progressive ratio task. Additionally, for the linear and WQS models, we observed a modification effect by child sex in the progressive ratio and delayed matching-to-sample tasks. Higher prenatal Mn biomarker levels were associated with improved task performance for girls and reduced performance in boys. Higher prenatal blood Mn concentrations and the MMB mixture predicted improved performance on two of five operant tasks. Higher prenatal Mn concentrations regulated executive functions in children in a sexually dimorphic manner. Higher prenatal Mn exposure is associated with improved performance on spatial memory and motivation tasks in girls, suggesting that Mn's nutritional role is sexually dimorphic, and should be considered when making dietary and/or environmental intervention recommendations. • The effects of prenatal Mn exposure on OTB performance are sexually dimorphic. • Girls exhibited improved spatial memory and motivation when exposed to higher Mn. • MMB mixture on two of five OTB measures differ in the directionality by child sex. In one experiment with rats, we investigated the impact of a retrieval-extinction procedure on spontaneous recovery of operant responses. Four groups of rats were trained to press a lever for beer during the first phase of the experiment. In the second phase, lever pressing underwent extinction. Each extinction session was preceded by brief exposure to the beer in two of the groups, either 15 or 120 min before each session. Then, the four groups were tested twice to measure spontaneous recovery. The first test was carried out immediately after the last extinction session for all rats. The second test took place after 60 min for one group, while for the remaining groups it was conducted after 5 days. We found spontaneous recovery in the three groups that experienced a delay of 5 days between the first and second test. However, the spontaneous recovery effect was attenuated in the group for which the reinforcer had been presented 15 min before each extinction session. Our data indicates that the retrieval-extinction paradigm may be a suitable behavioral technique for reducing the reappearance of beer-seeking behavior. • Rats were trained to respond for alcoholic beer. • Using a US-based reactivation procedure can reduce spontaneous recovery of beer-seeking in rats. • Exposure to beer prior to extinction was effective only when conducted after a short delay before extinction. Orexin neurons in the Lateral Hypothalamus (LH) play an important role in food seeking behavior. Approximately 60 percent of LH orexin neurons are inhibited by elevated extracellular glucose. It has been shown that elevated LH glucose decreases conditioned place preference for a food associated chamber. However, it has never been shown how modulation of LH extracellular glucose effects a rat's motivation to work for food. In this experiment we used reverse microdialysis to modulate extracellular glucose levels in LH during an operant task. Results from a progressive ratio task demonstrated that 4 mM glucose perfusion significantly decreased the animal's motivation to work for sucrose pellets while not effecting the hedonic value of the pellets. In a second experiment we demonstrated that 4 mM but not 2.5 mM glucose perfusion was sufficient to significantly decrease the number of sucrose pellets earned. Finally, we showed that modulating LH extracellular glucose mid-session from 0.7 mM to 4 mM did not affect behavior. This indicates that once feeding behavior has begun the animal becomes unresponsive to changes in extracellular glucose levels in LH. Taken together these experiments indicate that LH glucose sensing neurons play an important role in motivation to initiate feeding. Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are drugs of abuse that impair behavior and cognition. In a rodent model of AAS abuse, testosterone-treated male rats expend more physical effort, by repeatedly pressing a lever for a large reward in an operant discounting task. However, since modern society prioritizes cognitive over physical effort, it is important to determine if AAS limit cognitive effort. Here we tested the effects of AAS on a novel cognitive-effort discounting task. Each operant chamber had 3 nose-pokes, opposite 2 levers and a pellet dispenser. Rats pressed a lever to illuminate 1 nose-poke; they responded in the illuminated nose-poke to receive sugar pellets. For the 'easy' lever, the light remained on for 1 s, and a correct response earned 1 pellet. For the 'hard' lever, the light duration decreased from 1 s to 0.1 s across 5 blocks of trials, and a correct response earned 4 pellets. As the duration of the nose-poke light decreased, all rats decreased their choice of the hard lever in a modest discounting curve. Task accuracy also decreased significantly across the 5 blocks of trials. However, there was no effect of testosterone on choice of the hard lever or task accuracy. Antagonism of dopamine D1 or D2 receptors had no effect on lever choice or task accuracy. However, serotonin depletion significantly decreased preference for the hard lever, and impaired task accuracy. Thus, physical effort discounting depends on dopamine activity, while cognitive effort discounting task is sensitive to serotonin. Abstract Opiate withdrawal induces an early aversive state which can be associated to contexts and/or cues, and re-exposure to either these contexts or cues may participate in craving and relapse. Nucleus accumbens (NAC), hippocampus (HPC) and basolateral amygdala (BLA) are crucial substrates for acute opiate withdrawal, and for withdrawal memory retrieval. Also HPC and BLA interacting with the NAC are suggested to respectively mediate the processing of context and cue representations of drug-related memories. Here we used a paradigm of conditioned suppression of operant food seeking, allowing to differentiate context and cue related responses, to study the influence of withdrawal memories on operant behavior and the underlying neural substrates. catFISH for Arc mRNA expression was used to discriminate cellular responses during context and cue (flashing light) periods in this paradigm. We show that reactivation of the memory of the negative affective state of withdrawal suppresses active lever pressing for food, and this conditioned suppression is generalized to the context. Interestingly the behavioral responses during the context and cue light periods are associated with differential Arc mRNA activations within the NAC, BLA, and HPC. Indeed both periods led to NAC shell activation whereas the NAC core was responsive only following the cue light period. Moreover, BLA and HPC were more responsive during cue-light and context period respectively. These data further support the already reported differential role of these brain structures on cue vs context-induced reinstatement of operant behaviors, and highlight the existence of common mechanisms for the processing of positive and aversive emotional memories. Abstract Acute stress has been found to impair goal-directed instrumental behaviour, a cognitively flexible behaviour that requires cognitive control. The current study aimed to investigate the role of individual differences in baseline and stress-induced changes in working memory (WM) on the shift to less goal-directed responding under stress. To this end, 112 healthy participants performed an instrumental learning task. In phase 1, participants learned instrumental actions that were associated with two different food rewards. In phase 2, one of these food rewards was devalued by eating until satiety. Before the extinction test in phase 3, participants were subjected to the Maastricht Acute Stress Test or a no-stress control procedure. Results showed that the effect of stress on instrumental behaviour is modulated by baseline, but not stress-induced changes in WM capacity. Specifically, only at low baseline WM capacity did stress induce a shift to less goal-directed behaviour. These findings highlight that our cognitive resources are limited and for those who already have limited resources at baseline taking into account motivational value is impaired under stress. Children in a joint condition performed causal interventions with an adult on two causal systems. Children in an independent condition took turns and observed an adult perform the same interventions on one system and performed the same interventions themselves on the other system. Joint action improved first graders' (n = 60) causal inference compared with individual action and observation. However, joint action impaired kindergartners' (n = 60) inference relative to individual action and observation. These findings demonstrate that joint action, as a component of collaborative activity, can help or hinder inductive causal learning depending on features of the learner. Abstract Voluntary actions require motives. It is already known that the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) assess the motivational values. However, it remains unclear how the motivational process gains access to the motor execution system in the brain. Here we present evidence that the ventral striatum (VS) plays a hub-like role in mediating motivational and motor processing in operant behavior. We used positron emission tomography (PET) to detect the neural activation areas associated with motivational action. Using obtained regions, partial correlation analysis was performed to examine how the motivational signals propagate to the motor system. The results revealed that VS activity propagated to both MPFC and primary motor cortex through the thalamus. Moreover, muscimol injection into the VS suppressed the motivational behavior, supporting the idea of representations of motivational signals in VS that trigger motivational behavior. These results suggest that the VS-thalamic pathway plays a pivotal role for both motivational processing through interactions with the MPFC and for motor processing through interactions with the motor BG circuits. Abstract Sleep enhances memory consolidation which has been shown in mammals as well as in invertebrates, like bees and Drosophila. The current study is part of a series of experiments examining whether this memory function of sleep is preserved in Aplysia with an even simpler nervous system. Previous work showed that Aplysia sleep and that sleep after training supports memory on an inhibitory conditioning task ('learning that food is inedible', LFI). Here, we tested whether sleep in Aplysia would also support memory for an extinction learning on the LFI task. Following Acquisition in which animals learned that netted food is inedible, two groups of animals, a Sleep group (n = 15) and a Wake group (n = 16) underwent extinction training. After a 17-hour Retention interval which contained either regular nocturnal sleep or daytime wakefulness (supported by sleep deprivation) animals were retested on the LFI task. Contrary to our hypothesis, the Wake animals showed significantly prolonged food intake behavior on the LFI, indicating that extinction memory in these animals was better than in the Sleep animals. Performance of a control group not subjected to extinction training, ruled out that the superior extinction performance of Wake animals merely reflected forgetting over time of the LFI memory, and also excluding a possible circadian confound. We speculate that wakefulness mainly acts by accelerating active forgetting of the LFI memory after it was labialized through extinction training, thereby facilitating the re-emergence of the original innate behavior of food intake. Abstract Several studies have examined a role for the prelimbic cortex (PL) and infralimbic cortex (IL) in free operant behavior. The general conclusion has been that PL controls goal-directed actions (instrumental behaviors that are sensitive to reinforcer devaluation) whereas IL controls habits (instrumental behaviors that are not sensitive to reinforcer devaluation). To further examine the involvement of these regions in the expression of instrumental behavior, we first implanted male rats with bilateral guide cannulae into their PL, then trained two responses to produce a sucrose pellet reinforcer, R1 and R2, each in a distinct context. R1 received extensive training and R2 received minimal training. Rats then received lithium chloride injections either paired or unpaired with sucrose pellets in both contexts until paired rats rejected all pellets. Following acquisition, in Experiment 1, rats received either an infusion of saline or baclofen/muscimol into the PL and were tested (in extinction) on both R1 and R2. In vehicle controls, both responses were goal-directed actions, as indicated by their sensitivity to reinforcer devaluation. PL inactivation decreased expression of the minimally-trained action without affecting expression of the extensively-trained action. Experiment 2 utilized the same experimental design but with IL inactivation at test. The extensively-trained response was again a goal-directed action. However, now expression of the extensively-trained goal-directed action was suppressed by IL inactivation. The overall pattern of results suggests that the PL is involved in expression of minimally trained goal-directed behavior while the IL is involved in expression of extensively trained goal-directed behavior. This implies that the PL does not control all types of actions and the IL can control some types of actions. Abstract The objective of this experiment was to study similarities between superstitious behavior and illusion of control. We used different motivational instructions to generate high and low rates of responding and exposed participants to noncontingent reinforcement in order to evaluate superstitious behavior and illusion of control. College students (n = 40) responded over three 10-min sessions in a computer-based free operant procedure that alternated signaled periods of noncontingent presentation of points (VT schedule) and periods in which the points were not presented (extinction, EXT). In one group of participants, points were the only reward; for the other group, instructions stated that points were later exchangeable for photocopy vouchers. We compared rates of responding and estimates of control. Points exchangeable for photocopy vouchers produced higher rates of responding and estimates of control. Frequency of response and estimates of control were positively correlated. It was concluded that motivational instructions influenced both rate of responding and judgment of control. Even when a high rate of responding was extended in time (two more sessions for each participant), judgments of control were biased by noncontingent reinforcement. Through direct comparison between superstitious behavior and illusion of control, we showed that behavioral dynamics can be important in studies of illusion of control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the spatial-temporal pattern of the spread of the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus using a metapopulation model linked by commuting flow based on the reported influenza cases during the early stages of the epidemic in the Republic of Korea. The spatial heterogeneities, such as the local reproductive number and peak time, are investigated at province level. Furthermore, we discuss the effect of early intervention strategies, isolation and commuting restrictions, on the reduction of incidence at each province level. A major finding of this study is that early intervention at the source area of infection is more effective than interventions at the commuting-hub areas if the cost is limited. • Obsessive compulsive disorder can occur comorbidly with epilepsy. It is unclear whether common circuit pathology may underlie the co-occurrence of these two neuropsychiatric disorders. • Using a model for early-life seizures (ELS), rats with ELS were significantly less likely to develop a lever-pressing habit behavior in an operant task compared with controls. This corresponded with increased temporal coordination between brain structures responsible for the execution of goal-directed actions, while a decrease was observed in controls. • Cortical electrical stimulation was used as a model for transcranial magnetic stimulation, which can serve as a therapeutic intervention for obsessive compulsive disorder and other disorders in humans. Rats with ELS (and underlying circuit pathology) demonstrated altered outcomes in neural signaling following theta burst stimulation. Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) can occur comorbidly with epilepsy; both are complex, disruptive disorders that lower quality of life. Both OCD and epilepsy are disorders of hyperexcitable circuits, but it is unclear whether common circuit pathology may underlie the co-occurrence of these two neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, we induced early-life seizures (ELS) in rats to examine habit formation as a model for compulsive behaviors. Compulsive, repetitive behaviors in OCD utilize the same circuitry as habit formation. We hypothesized that rats with ELS could be more susceptible to habit formation than littermate controls, and that altered behavior would correspond to altered signaling in fronto-striatal circuits that underlie decision-making and action initiation. Here, we show instead that rats with ELS were significantly less likely to form habit behaviors compared with control rats. This behavioral difference corresponded with significant alterations to temporal coordination within and between brain regions that underpin the action to habit transition: 1) phase coherence between the lateral orbitofrontal cortex and dorsomedial striatum (DMS) and 2) theta-gamma coupling within DMS. Finally, we used cortical electrical stimulation as a model of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to show that temporal coordination of fronto-striatal circuits in control and ELS rats are differentially susceptible to potentiating and suppressive stimulation, suggesting that altered underlying circuit physiology may lead to altered response to therapeutic interventions such as TMS. To determine whether the punishment of a discriminated operant behavior has effects that are specific to the punished response, rats were reinforced for performing two different instrumental responses (lever pressing and chain pulling) in the presence of a single discriminative stimulus (S). They were then either punished with mild footshock for performing one of the responses (R1) in S, or they received the same shocks in a noncontingent manner while performing R1 in S (i.e., a yoked control). In final tests of both R1 and R2 in S, the punished rats were more suppressed to R1 than R2, but the yoked rats were not. The results extend previous results with extinction rather than punishment learning (Bouton, Trask, & Carranza-Jasso, 2016) and support a larger parallel between extinction and punishment of both free-operant and discriminated-operant responding. We have previously shown that the rat prelimbic cortex (PL) is necessary for contexts to promote the performance of instrumental behaviors that have been learned in them, whether the context is physical (operant chamber) or behavioral (recent performance of a behavior that has historically preceded the target in a behavior chain). In the present experiment, we investigated the role of the PL in satiety level as an interoceptive acquisition context. Rats were trained to lever-press for sweet/fat pellets while sated (22 hrs continuous food access) followed by the extinction of the response while hungry (22 hrs food deprived). Pharmacological inactivation of the PL (with baclofen/muscimol infusion) attenuated renewal of the response that occurred upon a return to the sated context. In contrast, animals that received a vehicle (saline) infusion showed renewal of the previously extinguished response. These results support the hypothesis that the PL monitors the relevant contextual elements (physical, behavioral, or satiety state) associated with reinforcement of a response and promotes the subsequent performance of that response in their presence. Renewal is a relapse phenomenon that occurs when previously treated target behavior re-emerges as a result of context change. Typically, a target response is reinforced in Context A, extinguished in Context B, and then re-emerges in Context A - despite the continuation of the extinction procedure. In the current study, we initially reinforced inappropriate mealtime behavior or aggression in Context A across three children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Next, therapists either differentially reinforced an alternative response or extinguished responding by terminating the relationship between problem behavior and the reinforcer in Context B. Problem behavior re-emerged upon the return to Context A even though treatments continued. Finally, we tested repeated exposure to Context A and pairing Contexts A and B for mitigating renewal. Despite the convincing results regarding the effectiveness of individual career counseling on career decision-making difficulties, little is known about the processes that lead to these outcomes. This study examined the impact of intervention components and working alliance on the decrease of career decision-making difficulties. Participants were 114 university students who received an average of 3.17 sessions of naturally occurring career counseling. Results indicated that four intervention components significantly predicted the change in the overall level of career decision-making difficulties. These intervention components are written exercises in - session ( occupational analyses ), individualized feedbacks on career choice , occupational information in - session about career options , and dealing with career - related barriers . Working alliance significantly moderates the effects of both individualized feedbacks and written exercises on the change in the overall career decision-making difficulties. More specifically, the effects of individualized feedbacks and written exercises on total career decision-making difficulties were significant only when working alliance was either average or high. Operant behavior tasks are widely used in neuroscience research, but little is known about how variables such as housing and testing conditions affect rodent operant performance. We have previously observed differences in operant performance in male and female mice depending on whether mice were housed and tested in rooms containing only one sex versus rooms containing both sexes. Here, male and female mice in either single-sex or mixed sex housing rooms were trained on fixed ratio 1 (FR1) and progressive ratio (PR) tasks. For both sexes, animals in the mixed sex room had more accurate performance in FR1 and were more motivated in the PR task. We then moved the single sex housed animals to the mixed sex room and vice versa. Animals that started in mixed sex housing had no change to PR, but both sexes who started in single sex housing were more motivated after the switch. Additionally, the females that moved into single-sex housing performed less accurately in FR1. We conclude that housing and testing conditions can affect performance on FR1 and PR tasks. As these tasks are commonly used as training steps to more complex tasks, housing and testing conditions should be carefully considered during experiment design and reported in publications. To address the limitations of self-report measures, we developed the Pro-Environmental Behavior Task (PEBT) as a computerized paradigm for the assessment of actual pro-environmental behavior under controlled laboratory conditions. On each PEBT trial, participants can either choose the faster car option, which causes a series of lights to be illuminated, or they can save the associated energy by choosing the bicycle option at the expense of spending more time in the laboratory. In two pre-registered studies (both N  = 120), we showed that the proportion of environmentally friendly PEBT choices is a valid and reliable measure of pro-environmental behavior. PEBT choices were consistent across trials, correlated to conceptually relevant variables, and sensitive to conceptually relevant manipulations. These effects were replicable and independent of the labelling of PEBT options. Our findings highlight the psychometric quality and utility of the PEBT as a paradigm that can open new avenues for research on pro-environmental behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current study investigated whether manipulations of affective and cognitive empathy have differential effects on observed behavior and self-reported outcomes in adolescent–mother conflict discussions. We further examined how these situational empathy inductions interact with preexisting empathic dispositions. To promote ecological validity, we conducted home visits to study conflict discussions about real disagreements in adolescent–mother relationships. We explored the roles of sex, age, and maternal support and power as covariates and moderators. Results indicated that the affective empathy manipulation had no significant effects on behavior, although a trend in the hypothesized direction suggested that affective empathy might promote active problem solving. The cognitive empathy manipulation led to lower conflict escalation and promoted other-oriented listening for adolescents low in dispositional cognitive empathy. State–trait interactions indicated that the empathy manipulations had significant effects on self-reported outcomes for adolescents lower in dispositional empathic concern. For these adolescents, both manipulations promoted outcome satisfaction, but only the cognitive manipulation promoted perceived fairness. This suggests that cognitive empathy, in particular, allows adolescents to distance themselves from the emotional heat of a conflict and listen to mothers’ point of view, leading to outcomes perceived as both satisfying and fair. These findings are relevant for interventions and clinicians because they demonstrate unique effects of promoting affective versus cognitive empathy. Because even these minimal manipulations promoted significant effects on observed behavior and self-reported outcomes, particularly for low-empathy adolescents, stronger structural interventions are likely to have marked benefits. There is initial evidence that beliefs about the eating behaviour of others (perceived eating norms) can influence children's vegetable consumption, but little research has examined the mechanisms explaining this effect. In two studies we aimed to replicate the effect that perceived eating norms have on children's vegetable consumption, and to explore mechanisms which may underlie the influence of perceived eating norms on children's vegetable consumption. Study 1 investigated whether children follow perceived eating norms due to a desire to maintain personal feelings of social acceptance. Study 2 investigated whether perceived eating norms influence eating behaviour because eating norms provide information which can remove uncertainty about how to behave. Across both studies children were exposed to vegetable consumption information of other children and their vegetable consumption was examined. In both studies children were influenced by perceived eating norms, eating more when led to believe others had eaten a large amount compared to when led to believe others had eaten no vegetables. In Study 1, children were influenced by a perceived eating norm regardless of whether they felt sure or unsure that other children accepted them. In Study 2, children were most influenced by a perceived eating norm if they were eating in a novel context in which it may have been uncertain how to behave, as opposed to an eating context that children had already encountered. This study investigated changes in brain function that occurred over a 7-day behavioral intervention for adults who stutter (AWS). Thirteen AWS received the intervention (AWS+), and 13 AWS did not receive the intervention (AWS-). There were 13 fluent controls (FC-). All participants were scanned before and after the intervention. Whole-brain analysis pre-intervention showed significant differences in task-related brain activation between AWS and FC- in the right inferior frontal cortex (IFC) and left middle temporal cortex, but there were no differences between the two AWS groups. Across the 7-day period of the intervention, AWS+ alone showed a significant increase of brain activation in the left ventral IFC/insula. There were no changes in brain function for the other two groups. Further analysis revealed that the change did not correlate with resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) that AWS showed in the cerebellum (Lu et al., 2012). However, both changes in task-related brain function and RSFC correlated with changes in speech fluency level. Together, these findings suggest that functional reorganization in a brain region close to the left IFC that shows anomalous function in AWS, occurs after a short-term behavioral intervention for stuttering. Drug abuse, overeating, and smoking are all examples of instrumental behaviors that often involve chains or sequences of behavior. A behavior chain is minimally composed of a procurement response that is required in order for a subsequent consumption response to be reinforced. Despite the translational importance of behavior chains, few studies have attempted to understand what binds them together and takes them apart. This article surveys the development of the heterogeneous instrumental chain method and introduces recent findings that have used extinction to analyze the associative content of (what is learned in) the chain. Chained responses that are occasion-set by their own discriminative stimuli may be directly associated; extinction of the procurement response weakens its associated consumption response, and extinction of the consumption response weakens its associated procurement response. Extinction itself involves learning to inhibit the response. Extinguished chained responses are subject to renewal when they are tested either back in the acquisition context or in a new context. In addition, a consumption response that is extinguished outside its chain is renewed when returned to the context of the preceding response in the chain. Objective: Synthesizing research on social cognitive theories applied to health behavior is an important step in the development of an evidence base of psychological factors as targets for effective behavioral interventions. However, few meta-analyses of research on social cognitive theories in health contexts have conducted simultaneous tests of theoretically-stipulated pattern effects using path analysis. We argue that conducting path analyses of meta-analytic effects among constructs from social cognitive theories is important to test nomological validity, account for mediation effects, and evaluate unique effects of theory constructs independent of past behavior. We illustrate our points by conducting new analyses of two meta-analyses of a popular theory applied to health behaviors, the theory of planned behavior.Method: We conducted meta-analytic path analyses of the theory in two behavioral contexts (alcohol and dietary behaviors) using data from the primary studies included in the original meta-analyses augmented to include intercorrelations among constructs and relations with past behavior missing from the original analysis.Results: Findings supported the nomological validity of the theory and its hypotheses for both behaviors, confirmed important model processes through mediation analysis, demonstrated the attenuating effect of past behavior on theory relations, and provided estimates of the unique effects of theory constructs independent of past behavior.Conclusions: Our analysis illustrates the importance of conducting a simultaneous test of theory-stipulated effects in meta-analyses of social cognitive theories applied to health behavior. Costly third-party interventions have been regarded as hallmarks of moral behavior, because they are unlikely to be motivated by self-interest. This research investigated the cognitive and emotional processes underlying two types of costly third-party interventions by manipulating incidental emotions and attention focus. In Study 1, we investigated the effect of incidental anger on third-party punishment decisions. Study 2 addressed the effect of incidental anger on third-party compensation decisions. In both studies, participants were induced to either an angry or neutral emotion and then had to wait or were distracted before engaging in third-party interventions. In Study 1, angry participants punished highly unequal distributions significantly more than those in the neutral emotion condition. In Study 2, angry participants compensated highly unfair distributions significantly less than those in a neutral emotion. In both studies, the effect of incidental anger was only significant in the wait, not the distraction condition. Study 3 again focused on third-party compensation decisions. Participants were induced to either a self-focused anger or an other-focused anger emotion, and attention focus (wait, distraction) was manipulated experimentally. Those in the other-focused anger condition compensated significantly more than participants in the self-focused anger condition. These results indicate that (self-focused) incidental anger led to antagonistic responses. Incidental anger was only associated with higher third-party compensation when it included a focus on a suffering other. Previous studies have shown that children in the preschool period are fastidious imitators who copy models with such high levels of fidelity that task efficiency may be compromised. This over-imitative tendency, and the pervasive nature of it, has led to many explorations and theoretical interpretations of this behavior, including social, causal, and conventional explanations. In support of the conventional account, recent research has shown that children are more likely to over-imitate when the task is framed using conventional verbal cues than when it is framed using instrumental verbal cues. The aim of the current study was to determine whether 3- to 6-year-old children ( N = 185, mean age = 60 months) would over-imitate when presented with instrumental and conventional verbal cues, which varied only minimally and were more directly comparable between instrumental and conventional contexts than those used in previous studies. In addition to varying the overall context, we also varied the instrumental prompt used such that the cues provided ranged in the extent to which they provided explicit instruction to omit the irrelevant actions. Counter to our predictions, and the high levels of over-imitation witnessed in previous studies, the older children frequently over-imitated irrespective of the context provided, whereas the youngest children over-imitated selectively, including the irrelevant actions only when the task was presented in a conventional frame. We propose that the age differences found following an instrumental presentation are a result of the youngest children being more open to the motivation of learning the causality of the task, whereas the older children were more strongly motivated to adopt a social convention. Instrumental renewal, the return of extinguished instrumental responding after removal from the extinction context, is an important model of behavioral relapse that is poorly understood at the neural level. In two experiments, we examined the role of the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) in extinction and ABA renewal of instrumental responding for a sucrose reinforcer. Previous work, exclusively using drug reinforcers, has suggested that the roles of the dmPFC and vmPFC in expression of extinction and ABA renewal may depend at least in part on the type of drug reinforcer used. The current experiments used a food reinforcer because the behavioral mechanisms underlying the extinction and renewal of instrumental responding are especially well worked out in this paradigm. After instrumental conditioning in context A and extinction in context B, we inactivated dmPFC, vmPFC, or a more ventral medial prefrontal cortex region by infusing baclofen/muscimol (B/M) just prior to testing in both contexts. In rats with inactivated dmPFC, ABA renewal was still present (i.e., responding increased when returned to context A); however responding was lower (less renewal) than controls. Inactivation of vmPFC increased responding in context B (the extinction context) and decreased responding in context A, indicating no renewal in these animals. There was no effect of B/M infusion on rats with cannula placements ventral to the vmPFC. Fluorophore-conjugated muscimol was infused in a subset of rats following test to visualize infusion spread. Imaging suggested that the infusion spread was minimal and mainly constrained to the targeted area. Together, these experiments suggest that there is a region of medial prefrontal cortex encompassing both dmPFC and vmPFC that is important for ABA renewal of extinguished instrumental responding for a food reinforcer. In addition, vmPFC, but not dmPFC, is important for expression of extinction of responding for a food reinforcer. The role of the medial prefrontal cortex in renewal in the original conditioning context may depend in part on control over excitatory context-response or context-(response-outcome) relations that might be learned in acquisition. The role of the vmPFC in expression of extinction may depend on its control over inhibitory context-response or context-(response-outcome) relations that are learned in extinction. The songs of many songbird species vary geographically, yet, the songs of black-capped chickadees, Poecile atricapillus , show remarkable consistency across most of the species' North American range. Previous research has described subtle variations in the song of this species by comparing songs produced by males at distant parts of the species' range (British Columbia and Ontario). In the current study, we used an operant discrimination task to examine whether birds classify the songs produced by males in these two previously studied locations as belonging to distinct open-ended categories. In both experiments, when birds were presented with new songs, they continued to respond to songs from the same geographical location as the songs that were reinforced during initial discrimination training, suggesting that birds were using open-ended categorization. We also presented birds with songs in which we manipulated acoustic features in order to examine the acoustic mechanisms used during discrimination; results provide support that birds use the duration of the song when discriminating, but the results also suggest that birds used additional acoustic features. Taken together, these experiments show that black-capped chickadees classify songs into open-ended, geography-based categories, and provide compelling evidence that perceptible acoustic differences exist in a vocalization that is seemingly consistent across the species' range. Children between 5 and 8 years of age freely intervened on a three-variable causal system, with their task being to discover whether it was a common cause structure or one of two causal chains. From 6 or 7 years of age, children were able to use information from their interventions to correctly disambiguate the structure of a causal chain. We used a Bayesian model to examine children’s interventions on the system; this showed that with development children became more efficient in producing the interventions needed to disambiguate the causal structure and that the quality of interventions, as measured by their informativeness, improved developmentally. The latter measure was a significant predictor of children’s correct inferences about the causal structure. A second experiment showed that levels of performance were not reduced in a task where children did not select and carry out interventions themselves, indicating no advantage for self-directed learning. However, children’s performance was not related to intervention quality in these circumstances, suggesting that children learn in a different way when they carry out interventions themselves. The hippocampus is heavily involved in the learning and memory processes necessary to successfully encode environmental stimuli and representations over time. Impairment of hippocampal function is associated with numerous neuropsychiatric diseases and can lead to detriments in the quality of life. In order to take full advantage of preclinical models of these disorders, there is a need for the development of more refined measures of clinically relevant hippocampal behaviors. While arena-based navigation tasks have provided fundamental information regarding the role of the hippocampus in spatial memory, the development of automated operant variants have had mixed results. Recently, an automated touch-screen paradigm has been shown to be highly sensitive to hippocampal function in the rat and eliminated mediating strategies that arose in previous tasks. Here we show that mice with lesions encompassing the entire ventral portion of the dorsal hippocampus are impaired on pattern separation behavior using a delayed nonmatching-to-location (TUNL) adapted for mice. Lesioned mice readily acquired the task at control rates when separations were maximal and delay periods were short while decreasing separations significantly impaired lesion mice. However, in contrast to previously reported results in the rat, consistently increasing delays did not significantly impair performance in the lesion group. Presentation of a variable delay within a session significantly impaired performance in lesion mice across delay periods. The current results demonstrate the utility of a touch-screen paradigm for measuring hippocampal-dependent pattern separation in the mouse and establish the paradigm as an important platform for future studies in disease models. Rats were exposed to a multiple schedule in which they pressed a lever on a variable-ratio schedule for wheel-running reinforcement in one component and pressed a lever or completed wheel revolutions on a fixed-ratio schedule for 15% sucrose solution reinforcement in the changed component. After 20 sessions, sucrose reinforcement was replaced with water (0% sucrose) and operant behavior (lever pressing or wheel running) placed on extinction in the changed component. Extinction markedly reduced lever-pressing rate and lengthened postreinforcement pause (PRP) duration in the changed component, but only modestly reduced wheel-running rate and actually shortened PRP duration. In the unchanged component, when either lever pressing or wheel running were placed on extinction in the changed component, wheel-running rate, lever-pressing rate, and wheel-running reinforcers decreased while PRP duration increased in the changed component. The effect of extinction differed in the changed component as a function of the type of operant, but not in the unchanged component. This ruled out the automatic reinforcement effect of wheel running as a bridge for transferring the extinction effect between components. Interoceptive stimuli (e.g., those associated with drugs and other motivational/emotional states) can acquire discriminative control over behavior when they are reliably correlated with particular Pavlovian or operant contingencies. This has been called state-dependent learning. Recent studies have shown that extinction learning can be specific to the interoceptive context in which it occurs, and interoceptive conditions can also contribute to the state-dependent renewal of operant behavior following extinction. Many of the events that induce interoceptive conditions that may contribute to renewal following extinction in this way concurrently function as motivating operations (MOs) that alter the value of reinforcers for operant behavior, and these functions may also contribute to the recovery of extinguished behavior. Three experiments were conducted to study interactions between the discriminative functions of interoceptive contexts associated with food deprivation and satiation MOs and their motivational functions in the renewal and reinstatement of extinguished operant behavior. We found evidence of the motivational state-dependent effects of extinction, as well as state-dependent renewal and reinstatement of operant behavior under food deprivation conditions. However, state-dependent renewal and reinstatement were not observed under food satiation conditions, even when these served as acquisition or non-extinction contexts. The results suggest that interoceptive states associated with food deprivation/satiation MOs can serve as discriminative parts of context that contribute to the recovery of extinguished operant behavior, but that relatively little renewal/reinstatement may be expected in the absence of the relevant motivational conditions. • State-dependent learning describes circumstances in which interoceptive stimuli acquire discriminative control over behavior. • Interoceptive stimuli can contribute to the recovery of operant behavior following extinction (state-dependent relapse). • Many events that induce interoceptive stimuli also have motivational effects on operant behavior. • Discriminative and motivational functions of food deprivation/satiation interact in contributing to state-dependent relapse. • Interoceptive stimuli contribute to state-dependent relapse, but not in the absence of relevant motivational conditions. Human drug addiction is a complex disorder, in which exogenous substances are able to recruit and maintain behaviors involved in drug taking. Many drugs that are addictive in humans are able to act on natural brain systems for learning and memory, and while many memory systems may be affected by addictive drugs, work with operant tasks has shown that addictive drugs (e.g. cocaine and alcohol) are particularly effective in recruiting habit learning systems, compared to natural rewards. It is currently unknown if the ability of addictive drugs to facilitate habit learning depends on a direct action on habit learning systems in the brain, versus the rewarding properties of drug administration. To differentiate between these options, rats were trained to perform two actions (lever pressing), each of which was rewarded with a different natural reward. After acquiring the behavior, rats received three training sessions which were followed by post-training injections of saline or cocaine (5 or 10 mg/kg, i.p.). Using sensory-specific satiety, extinction tests revealed that lever pressing for actions which were paired with saline were sensitive to devaluation (typical of goal-directed behaviors) while actions which were paired with cocaine were not sensitive to devaluation (typical of habitual behaviors). Lesions of the infralimbic or dorsolateral striatum were able to block the action of post-training cocaine injections. These data indicate that, within individual rats, cocaine injections facilitate the transition of behavior to habitual control for actions that have been recently performed, without a general facilitation of habit learning, and that this action of cocaine requires brain areas that are critical for learning natural habits. Anabolic–androgenic steroids (AAS) increase libido and sexual behavior, but the underlying behavioral mechanisms are unclear. One way AAS may enhance expression of sexual behavior is by increasing the willingness to work for sex. In the present study, sexually-experienced male rats received daily injections of testosterone at supraphysiologic doses (7.5 mg/kg in water with 13% cyclodextrin) or vehicle and were tested for appetitive sexual behavior measured by operant responding for access to an estrous female. Initially, rats were trained in their home cage to respond on a nose-poke under a 10-min fixed-interval schedule for food reward. Once rats achieved stable response rates, the food was replaced by a female, followed by mating for 10 min. There was no effect of testosterone on operant responding for food (28.1 ± 4.4 responses/10 min for testosterone, 30.6 ± 4.3 for vehicle) or sex (35.0 ± 4.0 responses/10 min for testosterone, 37.3 ± 5.2 for vehicle). However, rats made significantly more responses for sex than for food (p < 0.05), and responses for food and sex were positively correlated among individuals (R 2 = 0.6). Additional groups of rats were trained to respond on a lever for the female under a 2nd-order schedule of reinforcement, where 5 responses opened a door to show the female for 5 s. After 15 door openings, the male gained access to the female. There was no effect of testosterone on time to complete 75 responses: 38.4 ± 7.8 min for vehicle controls vs 43.3 ± 6.6 min for testosterone-treated rats (p > 0.05). Abstract: We investigated how people respond to moral threats and the consequences this has for one's moral self-concept. In two experiments, participants first tasted a sausage and were then confronted with a bogus participant who had refused to taste the sausage because of moral or non-moral reasons. People disliked the moral refuser more than the non-moral refuser. The self-threatening effect of having one's morals questioned was also reflected in specific patterns of cardiovascular responses and negatively affected participants' self-evaluations. We further show that the negative effects of a moral threat can be prevented by a simple intervention of physical cleansing: Participants who had cleansed their hands before being confronted with a moral refuser did not show the negative effects on self- and refuser evaluations. Importantly, the protective effects of physical cleansing were most pronounced for people with a strong moral identity. Taken together, these results underline the importance of one's self-concept when confronted with a moral refuser, and introduce an effective intervention to prevent these negative consequences. Abstract: Background. Interventions aimed at minimizing the spread of blood borne infections among Injecting Drug Users (IDU) are impeded by limitations in resources. To enhance their efficiency, it may be beneficial to target specific behavioural subpopulations, distinguished by syringe sharing tendencies. Methods. We used mathematical modelling to explore the effects of two types of intervention: removal of individuals from the injecting population and risk decrease at group-level (e.g. distribution of syringes). We computed the direct effects of intervention on the probability of obtaining and spreading infection as a function of baseline risk behaviour. Population level effects of (targeted) intervention were explored using a differential equations model, which incorporated two levels of risk. Results. Within most scenarios of risk distribution considered, HIV could be substantially reduced or eliminated by targeting high risk IDU only. Conversely, higher incidence reductions for HCV were reached in many scenarios when targeting low risk IDU. The potential for preventing infections by removal of uninfected IDU increases with baseline risk, but so does the probability that an IDU is already infected before being reached by intervention. Decreasing risk is likely to only delay rather than prevent infection for IDU borrowing many syringes, especially for a very infectious disease such as HCV. Conclusions. The efficiency of intervention on injecting drug users may be much enhanced by targeting specific risk subgroups. Abstract: The aim was to compare operant extinction with re-extinction following re-acquisition and to investigate neuropharmacological mechanisms through administration of drugs potentiating GABAergic or glutamatergic systems. Groups of C57Bl/6 mice were trained to lever press for food on a fixed ratio schedule, then extinguished with or without pre-session chlordiazepoxide or post-session d-cycloserine administration (15mg/kg in each case), then retrained to lever press for food, then re-extinguished with or without pre-session chlordiazepoxide or post-session d-cycloserine. Under vehicle injections, extinction and re-extinction curves were indistinguishable, but drug treatments showed that there was less resistance to extinction in the re-extinction phase. Chlordiazepoxide facilitated extinction and re-extinction, with an earlier effect during re-extinction. d-Cycloserine also facilitated extinction and re-extinction, with some evidence of an earlier effect during re-extinction. These results replicate and extend earlier findings with operant extinction, but differ from some previous reports of d-cycloserine on re-extinction of Pavlovian conditioned fear. Implications for accounts of the similarities and differences between neural mechanisms of extinction following either Pavlovian or operant conditioning, and applications of these findings, are discussed. Abstract: Recent research has identified several moderators of the effectiveness of imagined contact — a relatively new prejudice-reducing intervention. However, research to date has not examined the meta-cognitive experience of doing an imagined contact task (independent of the content of the instruction set), or the ways in which this meta-cognitive experience could moderate the task''s effectiveness. In two experiments, using a font manipulation, we demonstrated that altering the difficulty of the imagined contact task moderates its effects on prejudice. In both experiments, when the instructions were easy to read, participants who imagined intergroup interactions subsequently reported less prejudice than participants in the control condition. However, when the font was difficult to read participants who imagined intergroup interactions subsequently reported as much prejudice or even more prejudice than participants in a control condition. Implications for imagined contact theory, research and application are discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The stage model of behavioral change (SSCB, Bamberg, 2011, submitted for publication) conceptualizes behavioral change as a transition through the time-ordered sequence of four stages: predecision, preaction, action, and postaction. This study uses a phone-based social marketing campaign aiming to promote motor car use reduction to demonstrate how SSCB can be used to develop intervention modules targeting the proposed stages. It further reports on a randomized control trial evaluating the effectiveness of the SSBC-based intervention and testing hypotheses derived from the SSBC on the mechanisms that mediate the intervention effects. Results showed that the stage-based intervention significantly reduced motor car use (d = 0.51). They also confirmed the hypothesis that the intervention triggers participants'' transition to later, more action-oriented stages of behavioral change, and that this stage progression mediates the intervention effect on behavioral change. Limitations to the study''s evaluation design are discussed along with implications for future research. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In resurgence, an operant behavior that has undergone extinction can return (“resurge”) when a second operant that has replaced it itself undergoes extinction. The phenomenon may provide insight into relapse that may occur after incentive or contingency management therapies in humans. Three experiments with rats examined the impact of several variables on the strength of the resurgence effect. In each, pressing one lever (L1) was first reinforced and then extinguished while pressing a second, alternative, lever (L2) was now reinforced. When L2 responding was then itself extinguished, L1 responses resurged. Experiment 1 found that resurgence was especially strong after an extensive amount of L1 training (12 as opposed to 4 training sessions) and after L1 was reinforced on a Random Ratio schedule as opposed to a variable interval schedule that was matched on reinforcement rate. Experiment 2 found that after 12 initial sessions of L1 training, 4, 12, or 36 sessions of Phase 2 each allowed substantial (and apparently equivalent) resurgence. Experiment 3 found no effect of changing the identity of the reinforcer (from grain pellet to sucrose pellet or sucrose to grain) on the amount of resurgence. The results suggest that resurgence can be robust; in the natural world, an operant behavior with an extensive reinforcement history may still resurge after extensive incentive-based therapy. Abstract: Unemployment bears many negative consequences for both individuals and societies. Particularly the long-term unemployed face poor chances of finding reemployment, and many recommendations issued in the regular unemployment literature may not apply to them. Therefore, the current study investigates whether employability (Fugate et al., 2004) may help finding reemployment among those who have been unemployed for years. Specifically, we examine whether employability can foster job search and the chance on finding reemployment above and beyond the barriers that long-term unemployed people so often face. Additionally, we investigate whether reemployment interventions can contribute to long-term unemployed people''s employability. The present study assessed long-term unemployed people''s employability at two points in time (nT1=2541, nT2=897). Results show that employability fosters job search and the chance on finding reemployment among long-term unemployed people, although not all employability dimensions contributed equally to job search and reemployment. Moreover, reemployment interventions contributed to people''s development of employability, although the effects were relatively small. Taken together, our study demonstrates the significant role of employability in the reemployment process, thereby extending the notion of employability from active members of the workforce to the long-term unemployed. We discuss that reemployment research and practice should focus on longterm unemployed people''s employability, and that reemployment services should take a more personcentered approach in helping them to find reemployment. Abstract: Research has shown that victims of bullying fare less well on measures of peer affiliation than nonvictims, but less is known about the direction of effects and the mechanisms involved. Three linked studies addressed the latter two issues using an experimental paradigm with hypothetical vignettes (N =360). In Experiment 1, among both boys and girls and pupils in Years 7, 8, and 9 (n =120), participants were significantly less likely to (a) agree to act as a formal befriender to, (ii) believe that they would attempt to form a friendship with, and (iii) think that their peers would form friendships with a pupil new to their school if the description of the new pupil signaled that he or she had (vs. had not) been the victim of bullying in previous schools. Experiment 2 confirmed this “victim reputation” effect with a different sample (n =120) and found support for the hypothesis that it was mediated by the belief that associating with victims leads to an increased risk of becoming a victim (the “associating with victims is risky” effect). Experiment 3 (n =120) further replicated the original victim reputation effect and showed that the associating with victims is risky mediation effect was itself moderated by participants’ current victim status; the effect was stronger among participants that were high (vs. low) in current victimization.
