[Display omitted] Shear thickening of multimodal suspensions has proven difficult to understand because the rheology depends largely on the microscopic details of stress-induced frictional contacts at different particle size distributions (PSDs). Our discrete particle simulations below a critical volume fraction ϕ c over a broad range of shear rates and PSDs elucidate the basic mechanism of order–disorder transition. Around the theoretical optimal PSD (relative content of small particles ζ 1 = 0.26), particles order into a layered structure in the Newtonian regime. At the onset of shear thickening, this layered structure transforms to a disordered one, accompanied by an abrupt viscosity jump. Minor increase in large-large particle contacts after the order–disorder transition causes apparent increase in radial force along the compressional axis. Bidisperse suspensions with less regular but stable layered structure at ζ 1 = 0.50 show good fluidity in the shear thickening regime. This work shows that in inertial flows where particle collisions dominate, order–disorder transition could play an essential role in shear thickening for bidisperse suspensions. 3D video for tele-medicine applications is gradually gaining momentum since the 3D technology can provide precise location information. However, the weak link for 3D video streaming is the necessary wireless link of the communication system. Neglecting the wireless impairments can severely degrade the performance of 3D video streaming that communicates complex critical medical data. In this paper, we propose systematic methodology for ensuring high performance of the 3D medical video streaming system. First, we present a recursive end-to-end distortion estimation approach for MVC (multiview video coding)-based 3D video streaming over error-prone networks by considering the 3D inter-view prediction. Then, based on the previous model, we develop a cross-layer optimization scheme that considers the LTE wireless physical layer (PHY). In this optimization, the authentication requirements of 3D medical video are also taken into account. The proposed cross-layer optimization approach jointly controls and manages the authentication, video coding quantization of 3D video, and the modulation and channel coding scheme (MCS) of the LTE wireless PHY to minimize the end-to-end video distortion. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can provide superior 3D medical video streaming performance in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) when compared to state-of-the-art approaches that include joint source-channel optimized streaming with multi-path hash-chaining based-authentication, and also conventional video streaming with single path hash-chaining-based authentication. Deregulation of PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway has been recently identified to play a crucial role in the progress of human gastric cancer. In this study, we show that mefloquine, a FDA-approved anti-malarial drug, effectively targets human gastric cancer cells. Mefloquine potently inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis of a panel of human gastric cancer cell lines, with EC 50 ∼0.5–0.7 μM. In two independent gastric cancer xenograft mouse models, mefloquine significantly inhibits growth of both tumors. The combination of mefloquine with paclitaxel enhances the activity of either drug alone in in vitro and in vivo . In addition, mefloquine potently decreased phosphorylation of PI3K, Akt, mTOR and rS6. Overexpression of constitutively active Akt significantly restored mefloquine-mediated inhibition of mTOR phosphorylation and growth, and induction of apoptosis, suggesting that mefloquine acts on gastric cancer cells via suppressing PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway. We further show that mefloquine-mediated inhibition of Akt/mTOR singaling is phosphatase-dependent as pretreatment with calyculin A does-dependently reversed mefloquine-mediated inhibition of Akt/mTOR phosphorylation. • A stick–slip piezoelectric actuator with the double-stator cooperative motion mode (DCMM) was proposed. • Output performances of the actuator working under the DCMM and STMM were characterized and comparatively analyzed. • Under the DCMM, the backward motion was significantly suppressed, resulting in higher speed of the actuator. • Compared to the STMM, comprehensive performances of the actuator were significantly improved by using the DCMM. Backward motion commonly exists in stick–slip piezoelectric actuators, which deteriorates the comprehensive performances of the actuators and increases the motion nonlinearity. To further improve the comprehensive performances of stick–slip piezoelectric actuators by suppressing the backward motion, a stick–slip piezoelectric actuator working under the double-stator cooperative motion mode (DCMM) was proposed. The structure of the designed actuator and the working principle of the DCMM were addressed in detail. Subsequently, an experimental system was established to characterize the output performances of the designed actuator in terms of motion resolution, angular speed, vertical load, horizontal load, linearity of large-stroke, consistency of forward and reverse motions, and motion stability. Comparative experiments of the actuator operating under the DCMM and the single-stator traditional motion mode (STMM) demonstrated that every output performance of the designed actuator was significantly improved by using the DCMM. For example, the motion resolution was improved from 4.13 μrad to 1.77 μrad, the speed was increased to 1042.99 mrad/s, and the linearity of large-stroke reached 0.99997. Furthermore, compared with some other stick–slip piezoelectric actuators, the designed actuator was extremely competitive in each performance. Experimental results and comparative analysis confirm that using the DCMM, it is feasible to improve the comprehensive performances of actuators, which would broaden the application areas of stick–slip piezoelectric actuators. 3D video distribution over P2P networks has been thought as a promising way for 3D video entering home. The convergence of scalable 3D video coding and P2P streaming can provide diverse 3D experiences for heterogeneous clients with high distribution efficiencies. However, the conventional chunk segmentation and scheduling algorithms originally aiming at the non-scalable 2D video streaming are not very efficient for scalable 3D video streaming over P2P networks due to the particular data characteristics of scalable 3D video. Based on this motivation, this paper first presents a playback length changeable 3D video chunk segmentation (PLC3DCS) algorithm to provide different error resilience strengths to video and depth as well as layers with different importance levels in the 3D video transmission. Then, a hybrid-priority based chunk scheduling (HPS) algorithm is proposed to be tied in with the proposed chunk segmentation algorithm to further promote the overall 3D video P2P streaming performance. The simulation results show that the proposed PLC3DCS algorithm with the corresponding HPS can increase the success delivery rates of chunks with more important levels, and further improve the user’s quality of 3D experience. Abstract: This paper presents a rate-distortion (RD) optimized interactive streaming method for multiview video pre-compressed by H.264 Joint Multiview Video Model (JMVM). In the proposed method, multiple encodings are first used to facilitate the flexible server–client interaction. Second, a RD-optimized scheduling strategy is provided to guarantee the optimal view-dependent delivery of multiview video. In the RD-optimized scheduling strategy, a distortion model is proposed to estimate the expected end-to-end distortion by accounting for both coding and packet-loss-induced distortions, as well as rendering-induced distortion. With the end-to-end distortion model, the server can select the optimal encoding combination for transmission. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve a significant end-to-end RD performance improvement over the selective streaming methods with simulcast coding or scalable multiview coding. In addition, it has better error-resilience performance to combat with packet-losses over the Internet protocol (IP) networks. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Currently, VR video delivery over 5G systems is still a very complicated endeavor. One of the major challenges for VR video streaming is the expectations for low latency that current mobile networks can hardly meet. Network caching can reduce the content delivery latency efficiently. However, current caching schemes cannot obtain ideal results for VR video since it requests the viewport interactively. In this paper, we propose a tiled scalable VR video caching scheme over 5G networks. VR chunks are first encoded into multi-granularity quality layers, and are then partitioned into tiles to facilitate viewport data access. By accommodating the 5G network infrastructure, the tiles are cooperatively cached in a three-level hierarchal system to reduce delivery latency. Furthermore, a quality-adaptive request routing algorithm is designed to cater for the 5G bandwidth dynamics. Vascular complications are the main cause of morbidity and mortality associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus. An early hallmark of the onset of vascular complications is endothelial dysfunction and apoptosis. We aimed to explore the role of sphingosine-1-phosphatereceptor 2 (S1PR2) in high glucose-induced endothelial cells apoptosis and to elaborate the underlying mechanism. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were cultured in a high glucose with or without S1PR2 antagonist. The apoptosis of the cells was measured by flow cytometry and mitochondrial membrane permeability was detected by the fluorescent probe JC-1. The expression of the related protein was determined by western blot. Cell apoptosis and the loss of mitochondrial membrane permeability were induced under high glucose conditions in HUVECs. The expression of mitochondrial apoptosis related protein bax increased and bcl-2 decreased in high glucose-induced HUVECs. The level of cytochrome c released into the cytoplasm increased when cells were exposed to high glucose. In addition, the expression of p-AKT and p-GSK3β was reduced when HUVECs were treated with high glucose. However, these effects were reversed in HUVECs when cells treated with S1PR2 antagonist. In conclusion, S1PR2 antagonist protects endothelial cells against high glucose-induced mitochondrial apoptosis through the Akt/GSK-3β signaling pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aberrant expression of microRNAs contributes to the initiation and progression of numerous human cancers. The underlying effects and molecular mechanisms of microRNA-187 (miR-187) in gastric cancer (GC) remain unclear. The present study reports that miR-187 was significantly overexpressed in GC tissues compared to that in non-tumor tissues and was associated with malignant clinical factors such as depth of invasion (P = 0.005), tumor size (P = 0.024), lymph node metastasis (P = 0.048), and TNM stage (P = 0.035). Additionally, miR-187 promoted tumor growth in vivo , and significantly increased migration, invasion, and proliferation, but inhibited apoptosis in GC cells. It was found that collapsin response mediator protein 1 (CRMP1), a tumor suppressor, was a direct downstream target of miR-187 in GC. Furthermore, CRMP1 silencing resulted in similar effects on cell proliferation, migration, and apoptosis as those of miR-187 overexpressing GC cells. Additionally, the effects of miR-187 inhibitor on cell migration and cell apoptosis were reversed by CRMP1 downregulation. In summary, miR-187 promotes tumor progression by regulating CRMP1 expression in GC and may thus be a potential prognostic marker and a therapeutic target in GC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pyriproxyfen is a juvenile hormone-like pesticide. Once intake occurs, it leads to a series of poisoning characters consequences in silkworm, Bombyx mori (ID: 7091, Lepidoptera), such as non- cocooning, non-pupation, production of low-active eggs, and extended stages. However, the poisoning mechanism is still unclear. Here, silkworms were fed mulberry leaves soaked with different pyriproxyfen concentrations, and the heads were dissected for transcriptome analysis, while the hemolymph was used for determinations of ecdysone and juvenile hormone titers. As a result, after conjoint analysis of 3 feeding groups and a control group, 555 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained, which were mainly involved in hormone metabolism, glycometabolism and protein metabolism. Meanwhile, 119 genes were significantly correlated with the pyriproxyfen concentrations, and they were mainly involved in drug metabolism and glycometabolism. The ecdysone titers in several feeding groups were significantly lower than those of the control group, while juvenile hormone was not detected in all groups, including the control and feeding groups. Correspondingly, due to activation of the juvenile hormone signaling pathway by pyriproxyfen, key genes in the ecdysone synthesis pathway were downregulated, and a large number of downstream genes were up- or downregulated. In addition, nearly all genes in the detoxification pathway were upregulated. These results suggested that, affected by the juvenile hormone signaling pathway, ecdysone titers decreased and further affected a series of downstream processes, and this was the key reason for pyriproxyfen poisoning in silkworm, B. mori , which could lay a foundation for the study of pyriproxyfen resistance in silkworm. • An inertial piezoelectric actuator was developed by imitating the movement of frog during swimming. • Various methods were employed to comparatively analyze the hexagonal compliant parallel mechanism. • Frequency bandwidth of the actuator was significantly improved. • The proposed actuator showed good comprehensive performances. With features of simple structure and control, the inertial piezoelectric actuator is a promising type to achieve large working stroke and high positioning resolution. However, most of previously developed inertial piezoelectric actuators face the problems of low frequency bandwidth, motion speed, resolution as well as loading capacity, and thus require further improvement in comprehensive performances. For this purpose, inspired by the movement mode of frog's hind legs during swimming, a bionic inertial piezoelectric actuator was proposed in this study. The bionic motion principle and structure analysis of the designed inertial actuator were discussed in detail, followed by testing its output performances. The experimental results showed that the frequency bandwidth of the designed inertial actuator had been significantly increased to be 275 Hz, and correspondingly, the maximum motion speed reached 1.218 mm/s. In addition, the positioning resolution was 0.217 µm and the maximum horizontal load and vertical load were 0.6 N and 17 N, respectively. Comparative analysis indicated that compared to many previously reported inertial actuators, the comprehensive performances of the proposed actuator were significantly improved, being beneficial to its practical applications. Indigenous microorganisms were used to remove inorganic sulfur from high sulfur fat coal, and effect of L-cysteine on coal surface and biodesulfurization was investigated. It was found that L-cysteine addition enhanced coal biodesulfurization, and the optimal L-cysteine dosage was 1.6 g/L. With the optimal L-cysteine dosage, the Sulfobacillus were the dominant pyrite-oxidizing bacteria. After biodesulfurization for 30 days, the inorganic sulfur in coal decreased from 3.038% to 0.437%. L-cysteine was adsorbed on the coal surface through amino, carboxyl and sulfhydryl groups, and cysteine-Fe complex was formed by the interaction between interfacial –SH group of L-cysteine and pyrite, which was beneficial to sulfur transfer. Meanwhile, L-cysteine addition improved the adsorption of microorganisms on coal surface though reducing the Zeta potential of coal particle. The structural change of coal during the biodesulfurization showed that the pyrite was solubilized by Sulfobacillus to realize the removal of inorganic sulfur from coal, and L-cysteine addition inhibited the jarosite formation through improvement of pyrite bio-oxidation and corresponding pH decrease, which avoided the dissolved sulfur returning back to coal again. Moreover, the coal biodesulfurization with L-cysteine addition also presented obvious environmental benefit. • L-cysteine was used to enhance biodesulfurization of fat coal with indigenous microorganisms. • L-cysteine was adsorbed on coal surface and greatly changed coal surface properties. • L-cysteine inhibited formation of jarosite on the coal surface during biodesulfurzation.
