Natural products are the raw material for drug discovery programmes. Bioactive natural products are used extensively in medicine and agriculture and have found utility as antibiotics, immunosuppressives, anti-cancer drugs and anthelminthics. Remarkably, the natural role and what mechanisms drive evolution of these molecules is relatively poorly understood. The exponential increase in genome and chemical data in recent years, coupled with technical advances in bioinformatics and genetics have enabled progress to be made in understanding the evolution of biosynthetic gene clusters and the products of their enzymatic machinery. Here we discuss the diversity of natural products, incorporating the mechanisms that govern evolution of metabolic pathways and how this can be applied to biosynthetic gene clusters. We build on the nomenclature of natural products in terms of primary, integrated, secondary and specialised metabolism and place this within an ecology-evolutionary-developmental biology framework. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) produces diverse insecticidal proteins with distinct structures and modes of action. Among these, the Cry insecticidal proteins have been the most successfully used in the control of insect pests in agriculture and mosquito vectors of human diseases. Cry insecticidal proteins are produced as protoxins that are activated by the proteases found in the larval gut. To exert toxicity, Cry proteins must bind to different larval gut proteins that facilitate their oligomerization and membrane insertion, leading to pore-formation, enterocyte death and destruction of the larval midgut epithelium. Cry toxins are characterized by a three-domain structure where domain I is involved in membrane insertion, oligomerization and pore formation, while domains II and III determine the insect specificity by their capacity to bind different larval gut membrane proteins. Herein we review the structures of Cry toxins and protoxins and the recent advances on the mode of action of these proteins, including an alternative pathway for protoxin action and a new "folding-cane" model to explain Cry toxin insertion into the membrane. Also, we review the role of receptors in the mechanism of action of Cry activated toxins or protoxins, as shown by the novel editing techniques. Finally, the different strategies that have been used to improve these proteins with the aim of enhancing their toxicity, are discussed. It is foreseen that due to the current understanding of the mode of action of these proteins and the highly efficient in vitro evolution techniques, these insecticidal proteins will still be important tools for insect pest control in years to come. There is an increasing demand for gluten-free products around the world because certain groups of people, which have increased in the last decades, need to eliminate gluten from their diet. A growing number of people consider gluten-free products to be healthier. However, making gluten-free products such as bread is a technological challenge due to the important role of the gluten network in their development. However, other products, such as cakes and cookies usually made with wheat flour, can easily be made with gluten-free starches or flours since gluten does not play an essential role in their production. To replace wheat flour in these elaborations it is necessary to resort to gluten-free starches and/or flours and to gluten substitutes. Additionally, it can be convenient to incorporate other ingredients such as proteins, fibers, sugars or oils, as well as to modify their quantities in wheat flour formulations. Regarding gluten-free flours, it will also be necessary to know the parameters that influence their functionality in order to obtain regular products. These problems have originated a lower availability of gluten-free products which have a worse texture and are less tasty and more expensive than their homologues with gluten. These problems have been partially solved thanks to research on these types of products, their ingredients and their production methods. In recent years, studies about the nutritional improvement of these products have increased. This chapter delves into the main ingredients used in the production of gluten-free products, the processes for making gluten-free breads, cakes and cookies, and the nutritional quality of these products. Glyphosate, a globally prevalent herbicide known for its selective inhibition of the shikimate pathway in plants, is now implicated in physiological effects on humans and animals, probably due to its impacts in their gut microbiomes which possess the shikimate pathway. In this study, we investigate the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of glyphosate on the gut microbiota, neurotransmitter levels, and anxiety in zebrafish. Our findings demonstrate that glyphosate exposure leads to dysbiosis in the zebrafish gut, alterations in central and peripheral serotonin levels, increased dopamine levels in the brain, and notable changes in anxiety and social behavior. While the dysbiosis can be attributed to glyphosate's antimicrobial properties, the observed effects on neurotransmitter levels leading to the reported induction of oxidative stress in the brain indicate a novel and significant mode of action for glyphosate, namely the impairment of the microbiome-gut-axis. While further investigations are necessary to determine the relevance of this mechanism in humans, our findings shed light on the potential explanation for the contradictory reports on the safety of glyphosate for consumers. • Glyphosate affects zebrafish brain and behaviour. • Selective antibiotic properties of glyphosate may result in dysbiosis. • Alterations in serotonin and dopamine levels may be related to dysbiosis. • A potential novel mechanism for glyphosate toxicity in vertebrates. Smart cameras are an essential component in surveillance and monitoring applications, and they have been typically deployed in networks of fixed camera locations. The addition of mobile cameras, mounted on robots, can overcome some of the limitations of static networks such as blind spots or back-lightning, allowing the system to gather the best information at each time by active positioning. This work presents a hybrid camera system, with static and mobile cameras, where all the cameras collaborate to observe people moving freely in the environment and efficiently visualize certain attributes from each person. Our solution combines a multi-camera distributed tracking system, to localize with precision all the people, with a control scheme that moves the mobile cameras to the best viewpoints for a specific classification task. The main contribution of this paper is a novel framework that exploits the synergies that result from the cooperation of the tracking and the control modules, obtaining a system closer to the real-world application and capable of high-level scene understanding. The static camera network provides global awareness of the control scheme to move the robots. In exchange, the mobile cameras onboard the robots provide enhanced information about the people on the scene. We perform a thorough analysis of the people monitoring application performance under different conditions thanks to the use of a photo-realistic simulation environment. In the industrial corridor of Boyacá, Colombia, population growth is accompanied by anthropogenic activities such as industrial operations, vehicle exhaust fumes, mining, smelting, atmospheric deposition, and excessive use of chemical products to promote crop growth. These activities are known to have a significant impact on urban and rural soils, contributing significantly to elevated concentrations of potentially hazardous elements in the environment. This industrial corridor is an area of economic and social development that needs to provide reference information that will allow us to know the state of soil quality to preserve and manage the public and geoenvironmental health of this region. Anthropogenic activities have contributed to the accumulation of potentially hazardous elements in the environment, affecting various levels of life and creating risks with economic and social implications. However, igneous activity or detrital deposition also enriches soils and creates geochemical anomalies in specific locations. In these cases, the identification of potentially hazardous elements involves the determination of likely sources of contamination and their relationship to the geological setting. In this study, the concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, Mn, Fe, Zn, Hg, Cu and Ni were determined in eighty-one soil samples from the Boyacá industrial corridor (Colombia). The sequential trend of the concentrations of potentially hazardous elements was as follows: Fe > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu> Pb > As > Cd > Hg. Furthermore, the application of spatial analysis criteria in GIS software with multivariate statistical tools and geochemical indices allowed the identification of anthropogenic and geogenic sources. Most of the potentially hazardous elements were found in soils exposed to industrial and agricultural activities, except for iron. This element showed low variability in all samples, regardless of the geological formations. Due to the lack of reference values for potentially hazardous elements in Colombia, the concentrations were compared with the environmental standards of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Ecuadorian Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition (MAE). The results demonstrate the complexity of the soil and represent the first exploratory study of potentially hazardous elements in this industrial corridor. These results are the starting point for the establishment of geochemical background lines in Colombia and for inspection policies for areas where productive activities converge. Aquaculture is an industrial activity that not only aims to be a source of quality food, but also is a way to restock fish populations and to conserve the biodiversity of our oceans. On the other hand, the production system can influence the consumer perceptions about what is purchased and consumed, as well as the subsequent environmental and social effects. Fish feeding production is affected by the growth of aquaculture and the increasing demand that have let to deficit, high prices, and low ecological safety of fish meal and oil. In this regard, the use of microbial biomass obtained from a variety of microorganisms has been reported as a potential substitute for plant- and animal-derived ingredients, satisfying the requirements in protein and energy and even adding functional properties. In addition, microalgae can increase the nutritional value of animal feed, play a key role in the physiological growth and external appearance of aquatic animals. Finally, politicians, industry and society in general should be careful with the numerous uncertainties still present in the sector that can weaken its sustainability from environmental, social and economic perspectives. The world population is constantly growing so that the needs of food, including protein sources, will also increase considerably in the coming years. Animal farming has been related to numerous environmental consequences such as soil erosion, exaggerated water consumption, generation of large quantities of waste and accumulation of greenhouse gases. This is a situation that demonstrates the suitability and importance of finding more sustainable protein alternatives without losing the quality and the nutritional benefits of current common protein sources. In this context, it is worth highlighting the potential of insects and products derived from aquaculture. Particularly, farmed aquatic food products can reduce the impact on wild fish stocks, whose overfishing may end up in an ecological collapse, and insects are easy to be reared and efficient in converting feed into biomass. However, there are still several challenges like the need to adapt technologies and methods for the production and well-characterization of the new ingredients, careful evaluation of the introduction of such new proteins in the diet and its safety of use, including potential allergies, and the acceptance by consumers. Abstract Crude oil (CO) is a super mixture of chemical compounds whose toxic effects are reported in fish species according to international guidelines. In the current study a proteomic analysis of oxidized proteins (ox) was performed on the brain and liver of Nile tilapia exposed to WAF obtained from relevant environmental loads (0.01, 0.1 and 1.0 g/L) of Maya CO. Results have shown that oxidation of specific proteins was a newly discovered organ-dependent process able to disrupt key functions in Nile tilapia. In control fish, enzymes involved on aerobic metabolism (liver aldehyde dehydrogenase and brain dihydrofolate reductase) and liver tryptophan--tRNA ligase were oxidized. In WAF-treated liver specimens, fructose-bisphosphate aldolase (FBA), β-galactosidase (β-GAL) and dipeptidyl peptidase 9 (DPP-9) were detected in oxidized form. oxDPP-9 could be favorable by reducing the risk associated with altered glucose metabolism, the opposite effects elicited by oxFBA and oxβ-GAL. oxTrypsin showed a clear adverse effect by reducing probably the hepatocyte capacity to achieve proteolysis of oxidized proteins as well as for performing the proper digestive function. Additionally, enzyme implicated in purine metabolism adenosine (deaminase) was oxidized. Cerebral enzymes of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex (COX IV, COX5B), of glycosphingolipid biosynthesis (β-N-acetylhexosaminidase), involved in catecholamines degradation (catechol O -methyltransferase), and microtubule cytoskeleton (stathmin) were oxidized in WAF-treated specimens. This response suggests, in the brain, an adverse scenario for the mitochondrial respiration process and for ATP provision as for ischemia/reoxygenation challenges. Proteomic analysis of oxidized proteins is a promising tool for monitoring environmental quality influenced by hydrocarbons dissolved in water. Abstract A multidisciplinary analysis of Holocene sediments from La Cascajera (Tinto-Odiel estuary, SW Spain) has allowed to differentiate five sedimentary facies (sandy tidal flat, clayey tidal flat, washover fan, salt marsh, edaphic horizon), according to their granulometric characteristics, internal structure, mineralogical composition, clay mineral assemblage and paleontological record. These data, coupled to 14C AMS dating, suggest an evolution from a sandy tidal plain to a chenier before 2100 cal yr BP. This initial chenier was partially eroded later by regional storms between 2100 cal yr BP and 1900 cal yr BP, leading to the deposition of two washover fans. Abstract Acute exposure to nicotinic agonists induces myotoxicity in zebrafish embryos. The main goal of this work was to evaluate the potential myotoxicity of nicotine acetylcholine receptor agonists on adult zebrafish muscle tissue by using nicotine as a model compound. Liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) datasets were processed with different chemometric tools based on the selection of Regions of Interest (ROI) and Multivariate Curve-Resolution (ROI-MCR procedure) Alternating Least Squares (ALS) for the analysis of different exposure experiments. Analysis of Variance Simultaneous Component Analysis (ASCA) of changes on metabolite peak profile areas showed significant nicotine concentration and exposure time-dependent changes, clearly differentiating between exposed and non-exposed samples and between short (2 h) and long exposure times (6 h or 24 h). Most of the changes observed in the concentrations of different metabolites are probably secondary to the observed hyperlocomotion, as they have been also observed in humans after strenuous muscular exercise. The absence of myotoxicity might be related with the reduced calcium permeability of adult muscle-type nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). The potential importance of Juncus acutus for remediation of Zn-contaminated lands has been recognized, because of its Zn tolerance and capacity to accumulate Zn. Since it is also a halophyte, the extent to which salinity influences its Zn tolerance requires investigation. A factorial greenhouse experiment was designed to assess the effect of NaCl supply (0 and 85 mM NaCl) on the growth, photosynthetic physiology and tissue ions concentrations of plants exposed to 0, 30 and 100 mM Zn. Our results indicated that NaCl supplementation alleviated the effects of Zn toxicity on growth, as Zn at 100 mM reduced relative growth rate (RGR) by 60% in the absence of NaCl but by only 34% in plants treated also with NaCl. This effect was linked to a reduction in Zn tissue concentrations, as well as to overall protective effects on various stages in the photosynthetic pathway. Thus, at 85 mM NaCl plants were able to maintain higher net photosynthesis (A N ) than in the absence of added NaCl, although there were no differences in stomatal conductance (g s ). This contributed to preserving the trade-off between CO 2 acquisition and water loss, as indicated by higher intrinsic water use efficiency ( i WUE). Hence, A N differences were ascribed to limitation in the RuBisCO carboxylation, manifested as higher intercellular CO 2 concentration (C i ), together with dysfunction of PSII photochemistry (in term of light harvest and energy excess dissipation), as indicated by higher chronic photoinhibition percentages and variations in the photosynthetic pigment profiles in presence of Zn under non-saline conditions. Most studies have assessed the toxicity of pristine NPs to plants without considering the likely changes that these NPs will undergo during their residence time in the soil. In this study, we assessed the effects of ZnO NPs (3, 20, and 225 mg Zn kg −1 soil) aged for a year in soil and after a previous crop on the Zn availability in soil, leaf accumulation and toxicity to green pea ( Pisum sativum L.) and beet root ( Beta vulgaris L). The effects were compared to bulk ZnO and ZnSO 4 in two agricultural soils with different pH under greenhouse conditions. The Zn concentration in the plant leaf was 6–12-fold higher in acidic than in calcareous soil that could explain the different effects on plants caused by Zn applications depending on soil type. Thus, in acidic soil, ZnO NPs promoted ROS generation in both plant species with increases from 47% to 130%, increased the MDA content in pea up to 58 ± 8% in plant exposed to ZnSO 4 at 225 mg Zn kg −1 soil and altered the ratio of photosynthetic pigments in beet between 12% and 41%, suggesting distressed chloroplast constituents. In calcareous soil, the changes seemed to be related to the supply of Zn in Zn deficient soils, whose principal effect was the 20–65% decrease of ROS levels in treated plants. The available and leaf Zn concentrations did not differ among Zn sources. Likewise, ZnO NPs showed comparable toxic or stimulatory effects to ZnO bulk and Zn salt, with some exceptions where Zn ion showed the highest phytotoxicity and effectiveness as a micronutrient. In the present study, the sensitivity and concentration dependence of three functionally-defined components of cholinesterase activity (total: T-ChE; eserine-sensitive: Es-ChE; and eserine-resistant: Er-ChE) were quantified in the gill, digestive gland and adductor muscle of the tropical cup oyster Saccostrea sp. , following acute (96 h) aqueous exposure to commercial formulations of the organophosphate (OP) insecticide chlorpyrifos and the neonicotinoid (NN) imidacloprid (concentration range: 0.1–100 mg/L), as well as to dissolved cadmium and copper (concentration range: 1–1000 μg/L). Oysters (1.5–5.0 cm shell length), field-collected from a boating marina in Santa Marta, Colombia (Caribbean Sea) were exposed in the laboratory to each substance at five concentrations. T-ChE, Es-ChE, and Er-ChE activity were quantified in the three tissues in pools of 5 individuals (3 replicates per concentration), before and after inhibition with the total cholinesterase inhibitor eserine (physostigmine, 100 µM). Oysters exposed to chlorpyrifos, imidacloprid and Cd showed reduced T-ChE and Es-ChE activity in gills at highest exposure concentrations, with Es-ChE activity being inhibited proportionally more so than T-ChE, whereas Er-ChE activity showed no significant concentration-response. Digestive gland also showed diminished T-ChE, Es-ChE and Er-ChE activity for highest chlorpyrifos and Cd concentrations relative to controls, but an increase of T-ChE and Er-ChE activity at the highest imidacloprid concentration (100 mg/L). For Cu, T-ChE, Es-ChE and Er-ChE activities in gills and digestive gland were elevated relative to controls in oysters exposed to Cu concentrations > 100 µg/L. In adductor muscle, T-ChE, Es-ChE and Er-ChE activity showed no apparent pattern for any of the four xenobiotics and concentration levels tested. Although this study confirms acute (96 h) concentration-dependent reduction of tissue T-ChE and Es-ChE activity in gills and digestive glands of Saccostrea sp. exposed to high concentrations of chlorpyrifos (100 mg/L), significant changes in T-ChE, Es-ChE and Er-ChE were also caused by exposure to Cd and Cu at concentrations > 100 µg/L and by exposure to imidacloprid (100 mg/L), indicating that cholinesterase activity is not a specific biomarker of organophosphate exposure in this species, but, rather, a biomarker of diverse xenobiotic exposure. Epidemiological studies indicate that living in proximity to coal mines is correlated with numerous diseases including cancer, and that exposure to PM 10 and PM 2.5 components could be associated with this phenomenon. However, the understanding of the mechanisms by which PM exerts its adverse effects is still incomplete and comes mainly from studies in occupationally exposed populations. The aims of this study were to: (1) evaluate DNA damage in lymphocytes assessing the cytokinesis-block micronucleus cytome assay (CBMN-cyt) parameters; (2) identify aneugenic or clastogenic effects in lymphocytes of exposed populations using CREST immunostaining for micronuclei; (3) evaluate multi-elemental composition of atmospheric particulate matter; and (4) verify relation between the DNA damage and PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels around the mining area. Analysis revealed a significant increase in micronuclei frequency in binucleated (MNBN) and mononucleated (MNMONO) cells of individuals with residential proximity to open-pit coal mines compared to residents from non-mining areas. Correlation analysis demonstrated a highly significant association between PM 2.5 levels, MNBN frequencies and CREST+ micronuclei induction in exposed residents. These results suggest that PM 2.5 fraction generated in coal mining activities may induce whole chromosome loss (aneuploidy) preferentially, although there are also chromosome breaks. Analysis of the chemical composition of PM 2.5 by PIXE demonstrated that Si, S, K and Cr concentrations varied significantly between coal mining and reference areas. Enrichment factor values (EF) showed that S, Cr and Cu were highly enriched in the coal mining areas. Compared to reference area, mining regions had also higher concentrations of extractable organic matter (EOM) related to nonpolar and polar compounds. Our results demonstrate that PM 2.5 fraction represents the most important health risk for residents living near open-pit mines, underscoring the need for incorporation of ambient air standards based on PM 2.5 measures in coal mining areas. Incorporation of chemometric tools in behavioural data management workflows allows for the early identification of most relevant endpoints complementarily to statistical confirmatory approaches. In this work, the effects of two model neurotoxicants, chlorpyrifos (CPF) and nicotine, exposures on behavioural profiles of adult zebrafish at three different times (2, 6 and 24 h) were evaluated using open field test (OFT) paradigm experiments. Two chemometric methods like Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Analysis of Variance-Simultaneous Component Analysis (ASCA) have been used to interpret the changes observed in the obtained behavioural data. A decreased of the locomotor activity, an anxiolytic effect and an altered exploratory behaviour were the most affected behavioural endpoints in the CPF exposures. However, an increase of the locomotor activity and an anxiogenic effect were observed in the nicotine exposures. Information on trace element pollution in the terrestrial environment and its biota is limited compared to the marine environment. In the present study, we collected body feathers and blood of 37 Northern goshawk ( Accipiter gentilis ) nestlings from Tromsø (northern Norway), Trondheim (central Norway), and Murcia (southeastern Spain) to study regional exposure, hypothesizing the potential health risks of metals and other trace elements. Blood and body feathers were analyzed by a high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (HR-ICP-MS) for aluminum (Al), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), selenium (Se), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb). The influence of regional differences, urbanization and agricultural land usage in proximity to the nesting Northern goshawks was investigated using particular spatial analysis techniques. Most trace elements were detected below literature blood toxicity thresholds, except for elevated concentrations (mean ± SD µg ml −1 ww) found for Zn (5.4 ± 1.5), Cd (0.00023 ± 0.0002), and Hg (0.021 ± 0.01). Corresponding mean concentrations in feathers (mean ± SD µg g −1 dw) were 82.0 ± 12.4, 0.0018 ± 0.002, and 0.26 ± 0.2 for Zn, Cd and Hg respectively. Multiple linear regressions indicated region was a significant factor influencing Al, Zn, Se and Hg feather concentrations. Blood Cd and Hg concentrations were significantly influenced by agricultural land cover. Urbanization did not have a significant impact on trace element concentrations in either blood or feathers. Overall metal and trace element levels do not indicate a high risk for toxic effects in the nestlings. Levels of Cd in Tromsø and Hg in Trondheim were however above sub-lethal toxic threshold levels. For holistic risk assessment purposes it is important that the concentrations found in the nestlings of this study indicate that terrestrial raptors are exposed to various trace elements. Research on the effects of workplace bullying has concentrated on direct negative attitudinal employee responses, typically ignoring the cognitive mechanisms underlying this link. We integrate social exchange and attribution theories to propose and test a model wherein the link between workplace bullying and job and life satisfaction is explained by a breach of the psychological contract, i.e., employee beliefs that the organization failed to meet its commitments towards them. In two studies, we tested our hypotheses with experimental data from 69 business students and field data from 275 employees in France and Greece, respectively. Results from our experimental study revealed that bullying causes psychological contract breach. Study 2 replicated the findings in a field setting and found that psychological contract breach mediated the main effect of workplace bullying on job and life satisfaction. Interestingly, our results from moderated mediation analysis of Study 2 also showed that the effects of bullying are strongest for older women. Since the popularization of biological network inference methods, it has become crucial to create methods to validate the resulting models. Here we present GFD-Net, the first methodology that applies the concept of semantic similarity to gene network analysis. GFD-Net combines the concept of semantic similarity with the use of gene network topology to analyze the functional dissimilarity of gene networks based on Gene Ontology (GO). The main innovation of GFD-Net lies in the way that semantic similarity is used to analyze gene networks taking into account the network topology. GFD-Net selects a functionality for each gene (specified by a GO term), weights each edge according to the dissimilarity between the nodes at its ends and calculates a quantitative measure of the network functional dissimilarity, i.e. a quantitative value of the degree of dissimilarity between the connected genes. The robustness of GFD-Net as a gene network validation tool was demonstrated by performing a ROC analysis on several network repositories. Furthermore, a well-known network was analyzed showing that GFD-Net can also be used to infer knowledge. The relevance of GFD-Net becomes more evident in Section "GFD-Net applied to the study of human diseases" where an example of how GFD-Net can be applied to the study of human diseases is presented. Metals such as Al, Fe and Hg are used in diverse anthropogenic activities. Their presence in water bodies is due mainly to domestic, agricultural and industrial wastewater discharges and constitutes a hazard for the organisms inhabiting these environments. The present study aimed to evaluate geno- and cytotoxicity induced by Al, Fe, Hg and the mixture of these metals on blood of the common carp Cyprinus carpio . Specimens were exposed to the permissible limits in water for human use and consumption according to the pertinent official Mexican norm [official Mexican norm NOM-127-SSA1-1994] Al (0.2 mg L −1 ), Fe (0.3 mg L −1 ), Hg (0.001 mg L −1 ) and their mixture for 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. Biomarkers of genotoxicity (comet assay and micronucleus test) and cytotoxicity (caspase-3 activity and TUNEL assay) were evaluated. Significant increases relative to the control group (p<0.05 ) were observed in all biomarkers at all exposure times in all test systems; however, damage was greater when the metals were present as a mixture. Furthermore, correlations between metal concentrations and biomarkers of geno- and cytotoxicity were found only at certain exposure times. Modeling a disease or the treatment of a patient has drawn much attention in recent years due to the vast amount of information that Electronic Health Records contain. This paper presents a probabilistic generative model of treatments that are described in terms of sequences of medical activities of variable length. The main objective is to identify distinct subtypes of treatments for a given disease, and discover their development and progression. To this end, the model considers that a sequence of actions has an associated hierarchical structure of latent variables that both classifies the sequences based on their evolution over time, and segments the sequences into different progression stages. The learning procedure of the model is performed with the Expectation–Maximization algorithm which considers the exponential number of configurations of the latent variables and is efficiently solved with a method based on dynamic programming. The evaluation of the model is twofold: first, we use synthetic data to demonstrate that the learning procedure allows the generative model underlying the data to be recovered; we then further assess the potential of our model to provide treatment classification and staging information in real-world data. Our model can be seen as a tool for classification, simulation, data augmentation and missing data imputation. The continuous use of copper against fungal diseases and off-target effects causes major environmental and agronomic problems. However, the rain-induced removal of Cu-based residues is known only for a limited number of crops. We present the results of rain-induced removal of fungicides from two monitored vineyard plots which were sprayed with two widely used Cu-based formulations: copper-oxychloride (CO) and Bordeaux mixture (BM), respectively. Cu removal per growing season was 0.60±0.12 kg ha −1 (30% of the applied fungicide) for CO and 0.80±0.10 kg ha −1 for BM (70% of the applied fungicide). Fractioning the Cu in soluble (Cu S ) and particulate fractions (Cu P ) showed that most of the Cu was removed as Cu P , but Cu S concentrations found in throughfall collectors exceeded the regulatory threshold for toxicity in surface waters. The first few millimeters of rain caused most of the Cu removal. Our findings agreed with the data reported in the scientific literature, in which a significant fraction of the Cu-based formulation is loosely attached to the plant surfaces. Antibiotics are increasingly being used in human and veterinary medicine, as well as pest control in agriculture. Recently, their emergence in the aquatic environment has become a global concern. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of streptomycin on growth and photosynthetic activity of Chlorella vulgaris after 72 h exposure. We found that growth, photosynthetic activity and the content of the D1 protein of photosystem II decreased. Analysis of chlorophyll a fluorescence emission shows a reduction in the energy transfer between the antenna complex and reaction center. Also the activity of the oxygen evolution complex and electron flow between Q A and Q B were significantly reduced; in contrast, we found an increase in the reduction rate of the acceptor side of photosystem I. The foregoing can be attributed to the inhibition of the synthesis of the D1 protein and perhaps other coded chloroplast proteins that are part of the electron transport chain which are essential for the transformation of solar energy in the photosystems. We conclude that micromolar concentrations of streptomycin can affect growth and photosynthetic activity of Chlorella vulgaris . In this paper we propose a complete pipeline for medical image modality classification focused on the application of discrete Bayesian network classifiers. Modality refers to the categorization of biomedical images from the literature according to a previously defined set of image types, such as X-ray, graph or gene sequence. We describe an extensive pipeline starting with feature extraction from images, data combination, pre-processing and a range of different classification techniques and models. We study the expressive power of several image descriptors along with supervised discretization and feature selection to show the performance of discrete Bayesian networks compared to the usual deterministic classifiers used in image classification. We perform an exhaustive experimentation by using the ImageCLEFmed 2013 collection. This problem presents a high number of classes so we propose several hierarchical approaches. In a first set of experiments we evaluate a wide range of parameters for our pipeline along with several classification models. Finally, we perform a comparison by setting up the competition environment between our selected approaches and the best ones of the original competition. Results show that the Bayesian Network classifiers obtain very competitive results. Women deprived of freedom present some profiles and specific problems that distinguish them from the male prison population. The aim of this investigation is to evaluate how these gender differences are presented in the different observations and practices of the professionals who are involved in prison establishments. This will be done by means of a qualitative study with the participation of 22 professionals who work in three Spanish detention centres: Zuera (Zaragoza), Ponent (Lleida) and Palma (Mallorca). The results of the analysis show two main professional positions: the discourse and praxis that is present in the question of gender and the position that reproduces the patriarchal cultural patterns. Thermal processing of milk promotes oxidation reactions and changes in organoleptic characteristics. Application of High Pressure Processing (HPP) is a promising alternative but little is known about the impact on milk compounds, mainly lipids. This research aims to study the possible alteration of the composition of milk lipids and fatty acids as result of HPP using 250–900 MPa. Thus, two cow milk batches were assayed and the composition in tri-., di-., monoacylglycerols, cholesterol, cholesterol esters, free fatty acids, phospholipids and fatty acids analysed. It was found differences (p < 0.05) among batches in the distribution of triacylglycerols (CN34, CN50 and CN54) and also in the concentration of diacylglycerols, monoacylglycerols, cholesterol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylinositol and unsaturated fatty acids (C18:1 10t, C18:1 9c, C18:1 11c, C18:1 16t+14c, C18:2 9c,12c, C18:2 9c,11t and C20:1 9c). Data from the current study showed that processing by HPP up to 900 MPa did not produce significant changes to the lipid classes or fatty acid composition of milk fat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The enzyme delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALA-D) has been investigated as biomarker of lead (Pb) exposure in red mullet ( Mullus barbatus ) from the Spanish continental shelf. Concentrations of Pb and Zn in muscle and organosomatic indices were also measured to explore causality. Blood ALA-D assay conditions were optimized; the optimum pH for this species has been set to 6.5. Results showed that ALA-D activity ranged from 3.2 to 16.9 nmol PBG min −1 mg −1 . No significant differences on ALA-D levels between genders have been detected. ALA-D Baseline level and Background Assessment Criteria (BAC) for this species have been set to 9.1 and 6.6 nmol PBG min −1 mg −1 , respectively. There have been detected significant differences on ALA-D activity levels among areas, though the markedly low levels of Pb measured in fish muscle seemed not to be able to produce a relevant suppression on ALA-D. In spite of this, a weak inverse relationship detected between ALA-D and Pb concentrations pointed out the potential of this biomarker in red mullet to reflect Pb bioavailability in marine environment. The aim of this study was to assess the exposure to organochlorine compounds (OC) in 91 primary wing feathers of avian scavengers, Turkey vulture ( Cathartes aura ), American black vulture ( Coragyps atratus ) and Southern crested caracaras ( Polyborus plancus ) from the southern tip of South America, in the Argentinean Patagonia. We analyzed for a series of OC including hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers, endosulfan, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p’-DDT), dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (p,p’-DDD), dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p’-DDE), heptachlor and heptachlor-epoxide. This is the first study on OC in feathers of three terrestrial top carnivores from South America. OC concentrations found in the studied species were much higher than those found in feathers of raptors from Europe and Asia, which likely indicate their high use in the region, specifically in agriculture, and other possible uses of OC in this area. ∑HCH had the highest median concentration, followed by ∑Drins, ∑DDT, ∑Heptachlor, and ∑Endosulfan, similar to those reported in several food samples in Argentina. On the other hand, differences in OC profiles between species and areas may be related to feeding and migratory habits, as well as the molt period. Three individuals showed ∑DDT (DDT, DDD and DDE) concentrations in feathers related to sublethal effects. Since the first reported case in Wuhan in late 2019, COVID-19 has rapidly spread worldwide, dramatically impacting the lives of millions of citizens. To deal with the severe crisis resulting from the pandemic, worldwide institutions have been forced to make decisions that profoundly affect the socio-economic realm. In this sense, researchers from diverse knowledge areas are investigating the behavior of the disease in a rush against time. In both cases, the lack of reliable data has been an obstacle to carry out such tasks with accuracy. To tackle this challenge, COnVIDa (https://convida.inf.um.es) has been designed and developed as a user-friendly tool that easily gathers rigorous multidisciplinary data related to the COVID-19 pandemic from different data sources. In particular, the pandemic expansion is analyzed with variables of health nature, but also social ones, mobility, etc. Besides, COnVIDa permits to smoothly join such data, compare and download them for further analysis. Due to the open-science nature of the project, COnVIDa is easily extensible to any other region of the planet. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, symbionts of most land plants, increase plant fitness in metal contaminated soils. To further understand the mechanisms of metal tolerance in the AM symbiosis, the expression patterns of the maize Heavy Metal ATPase (HMA) family members and the ionomes of non-mycorrhizal and mycorrhizal plants grown under different Cu supplies were examined. Expression of ZmHMA5a and ZmHMA5b , whose encoded proteins were predicted to be localized at the plasma membrane, was up-regulated by Cu in non-mycorrhizal roots and to a lower extent in mycorrhizal roots. Gene expression of the tonoplast ZmHMA3a and ZmHMA4 isoforms was up-regulated by Cu-toxicity in shoots and roots of mycorrhizal plants. AM mitigates the changes induced by Cu toxicity on the maize ionome, specially at the highest Cu soil concentration. Abstract: Copal samples from two Aztec objects belonging to a collection of offerings found at Templo Mayor site were analyzed by GC–MS The first sample was part of an adhesive material found in the base of a ceremonial knife; the second sample comes from an amorphous artifact probably offered as spiritual material. In order to determine their botanical origin, resin samples from eight certified botanical species from Mexican Bursera were studied. The chromatographic study of their triterpenic composition allowed to establish a botanical origin related either to Bursera bipinnata or Bursera stenophylla species which triterpenic composition is identical. It is the first time that GC–MS analyzes were performed on samples from certified botanical origin of Mexican Bursera resins which aimed at getting an overview of the molecular composition and variability of copal resins and at establishing an analytical tool to characterize the botanical origin of archaeological samples. Abstract: Aluminum is one of the most abundant elements in nature and is used in diverse industrial processes. As a result, it contaminates aquatic ecosystems, inducing damage on associated biota. In fish, it has been observed to induce hypoxia, hypercapnia, metabolic acidosis and respiratory arrest. Although there is little information on Al-induced cytotoxicity and DNA damage, this type of studies are essential in order to identify the mechanisms of action of this metal. The cytotoxic and genotoxic effects induced by Al on common carp (Cyprinus carpio) erythrocytes were determined in specimens exposed to 0.05, 120 and 239mgAlL−1 in static exposure systems. Blood samples were taken at 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96h, erythrocytes were separated, and the following were evaluated: frequency of micronuclei and frequency of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL)-positive cells, blood Al levels, lipid peroxidation, protein carbonyl content, and activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase. The results show that tested aluminum concentrations produces oxidative stress (increase in lipid peroxidation degree and oxidized proteins content, as well as decrease in antioxidant enzymes activity) and induced higher frequencies of micronuclei and TUNEL-positive cells, so this metal can be considered as a cytotoxic and genotoxic agent for erythrocytes of common carp. Abstract: Due to its analgesic properties, diclofenac (DCF) is one of the most commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). While residue from this pharmaceutical agent has been found in diverse water bodies in various countries, there is not enough information of its potential toxicity on aquatic organisms, particularly in species which are economically valuable due to their high consumption by humans, such as the common carp Cyprinus carpio. This study aimed to evaluate potential DCF-induced oxidative stress in brain, liver, gill and blood of C. carpio. The median lethal concentration of DCF at 96h (96-h LC50) was determined and used to establish the concentration equivalent to the lowest observed adverse effect level (LOAEL). Carp specimens were exposed to this concentration for different exposure times (12, 24, 48, 72 and 96h) and the following biomarkers were evaluated: lipid peroxidation (LPX) and the activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Also, the DCF and 4-hydroxy DCF was determined by LC-MS/MS. Results show a statistically significant LPX increase (P<0.05) in liver and gill mainly as well as significant changes in the activity of the antioxidant enzymes evaluated in these organs, with respect to controls (P<0.05). The DCF concentrations decreased in water system and increased in the carp. The DCF biotransformation to 4-hydroxy DCF was observed to 12h. The pharmaceutical agent DCF is concluded to induce oxidative stress on the common carp C. carpio, with the highest incidence of oxidative damage occurring in liver and gill. Abstract: This bioassay was designed with the aim of exploring the responses of two wild planktonic microalgae exposed in situ (72h) as indicators of the changes in water quality. Monocultures of both strains within dialysis membrane bags were placed at two sites in a small lowland stream. Site 1 is located at a suburban area with low horticultural activity and Site 2 is impacted by toxic industrial discharges and urban land use. There was a decrease in population growth of both species at Site 2 compared with Site 1. The comparison of the algae exposed in situ with the normal specimens cultured at the laboratory indicated a significant increase in the cellular volume for both species at both sites. Abnormal shape was recorded at both sites, the percentage being significantly greater for Scenedesmus acutus at Site 2. Significant changes in pyrenoids size were observed in S. acutus and in the percentage of fragmented nuclei in Lepocinclis acus. Also in the latter abnormal paramylon grains were observed. These responses were accentuated at Site 2. This bioassay was sensitive, short term, low cost, and therefore is a suitable tool to contribute with the monitoring and ecological risk assessment of lowland streams. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Aluminum is used in a large number of anthropogenic processes, leading to aquatic ecosystems pollution. Diverse studies show that in mammals this metal may produce oxidative stress, is neurotoxic, and is involved in the development of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Nevertheless, there are only few studies with respect to Al-induced neurotoxicity on aquatic fauna, particularly on fishes of economical interest, such as the grass carp (Ctenopharingodon idella). This study evaluates Al-induced toxicity on the grass carp C. idella. Specimens were exposed to the maximum concentration allowed in order to protect aquatic life (0.1mgL−1), for 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96h. After the exposure time, lipid peroxidation degree, superoxide dismutase and catalase activity, as well as dopamine, adrenaline and noradrenaline levels were evaluated. Al concentration in organisms and water was also measured, in order to determine the bioconcentration factor. Results show that Al bioconcentrates in grass carp inducing oxidative stress (increment of 300 and 455 percent on lipid peroxidation degree and SOD activity, and decrement of 49 percent on CAT activity) and neurotoxicity (increment of 55 and 155 percent on dopamine and adrenaline levels and decrement of 93 percent on noradrenaline level). Spartina densiflora has demonstrated a high tolerance to heavy metal contamination and a high capacity for accumulating metal in its tissues. In the Gulf of Cadiz this species has colonized habitats with different degrees of metal pollution. The aim of this study is to analyse the responses of populations of Spartina densiflora to this pollution. Germination, growth, photosynthesis and metal uptake of two populations of Spartina densiflora collected from contaminated sites (Odiel and Tinto marshes) and of one population from a clean site (Piedras marshes) were examined through two reciprocal experiments, in which seeds and adult plants were exposed to metal-contaminated and uncontaminated soil under greenhouse conditions. The seeds of Spartina densiflora were able to germinate in all sediments with little differences between populations, even in more contaminated soils. However, these conditions decreased the growth and survival of the seedlings to a similar degree for all populations. Likewise, no differences were recorded in relation to physiological and metal uptake. Contrarily, in the adult experiment, we found that the Odiel population differed from the other populations in growth and metal uptake, with overall greater values. These differences in growth were strongly supported by lower photosynthetic rates and stomatal conductance in the Piedras and Tinto populations. The reduction in photosynthetic performance was largely due to the reduction in photosynthetic pigment concentration in both populations. Despite these differences, there was insufficient evidence to support that Spartina has evolved to heavy-tolerant ecotypes, since all Spartina densiflora populations proved to have a great capacity for accumulating heavy metals in its roots. The sorption capacity of both an organic municipal solid waste by-product (MSW) and a cow manure (CM) in a soil polluted with chlorpyrifos, as well as its effect on soil microbial activity, and weight, reproductive parameters and glutathione-S-transferase activity of two earthworm species (Eisenia fetida and Lumbricus terrestris) were studied. Chlorpyrifos was added at the recommended application rate (5Lha−1; 768mg chlorpyrifos kg−1) and treated with MSW at a rate of 10% and CM at a rate of 5.8% in order to apply the same amount of organic matter to the soil. An unamended polluted soil was used as control. Earthworm cocoon number, average weight of cocoon, and number of juveniles per cocoon were measured after 30 days of incubation, whereas soil enzymatic activities, earthworm weight, and glutathione-S-transferase activity of earthworms were measured after 3, 45 and 90 days. Soil enzymatic activities, reproductive and glutathione-S-transferase activity in both worms decreased in polluted soil. The inhibition percentage of soil enzymatic activities, reproductive and glutathione-S-transferase activity in both worms was lower in MSW-amended soil than for CM-amended soil. The toxic effect of chlorpyrifos on E. fetida was lowest compared to L. terrestris. This suggested that the addition of organic wastes with higher humic than fulvic acid concentration is more beneficial for remediation of soils polluted with chlorpyrifos. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We studied in the laboratory the effect of Prochloraz fungicide on the biological properties (soil enzymatic activities and soil bacterial communities) of a Plaggic Anthrosol. Five hundred grams of soil (<2mm) was mixed with three dosages of Prochloraz (1, 2, and 4lha−1) for 83 days. A non-Prochloraz polluted soil was used as control. Following commercial recommendations, fungicide was applied four times during the incubation experiment. For all treatments, the soil ergosterol and levels of dehydrogenase, urease, β-glucosidase, and phosphatase activity were measured at nine different times (0, 1, 21, 22, 41, 42, 62, 63, and 83 days). The 16S rDNA-DGGE profiles in all treatments were determined at the beginning and end of the incubation period. At the end of the experiment, a significant decrease in ergosterol by 72.3%, 80.8%, and 83.1%, compared with control soil, was observed when 1, 2, and 4lha−1, respectively, was added. Soil enzymatic activities increased when the Prochloraz applied to the soil increased, possibly because the fungicide is used by bacterial communities as a source of energy and nutrients. The 16S rDNA-DGGE profiles indicated that the fungicide did not negatively affect soil bacterial biodiversity. These results suggested that the fungicide Prochloraz has a very interesting agronomic effect, possibly due to the negative effect on soil fungal population stimulating the growth of soil bacterial activity. Abstract: In the last decade, machine learning (ML) techniques have been used for developing classifiers for automatic brain tumour diagnosis. However, the development of these ML models rely on a unique training set and learning stops once this set has been processed. Training these classifiers requires a representative amount of data, but the gathering, preprocess, and validation of samples is expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, for a classical, non-incremental approach to ML, it is necessary to wait long enough to collect all the required data. In contrast, an incremental learning approach may allow us to build an initial classifier with a smaller number of samples and update it incrementally when new data are collected. In this study, an incremental learning algorithm for Gaussian Discriminant Analysis (iGDA) based on the Graybill and Deal weighted combination of estimators is introduced. Each time a new set of data becomes available, a new estimation is carried out and a combination with a previous estimation is performed. iGDA does not require access to the previously used data and is able to include new classes that were not in the original analysis, thus allowing the customization of the models to the distribution of data at a particular clinical center. An evaluation using five benchmark databases has been used to evaluate the behaviour of the iGDA algorithm in terms of stability–plasticity, class inclusion and order effect. Finally, the iGDA algorithm has been applied to automatic brain tumour classification with magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and compared with two state-of-the-art incremental algorithms. The empirical results obtained show the ability of the algorithm to learn in an incremental fashion, improving the performance of the models when new information is available, and converging in the course of time. Furthermore, the algorithm shows a negligible instance and concept order effect, avoiding the bias that such effects could introduce. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The effects of amending Al-contaminated soils with municipal solid waste compost (MSW), poultry manure (PM) and cow manure (CM) on Al toxicity and morphological alterations and biochemical enzymes of the earthworm Eisenia fetida were investigated in an incubation spiking experiment. Al(NO3)3 was added to a soil at rates equivalent to 0, 50 and 100mgAlkg−1. In order to apply the same amount of organic matter (OM), soil samples were mixed with MSW, PM and CM at a rate of 10%, 7.6% and 5.8%, respectively. Earthworm cocoon number, average weight of cocoon and number of juveniles per cocoon were measured after 30 days of incubation, whereas weight, Al concentration and available Al, as well cellulase and glutathione-S-transferase activities of earthworms were measured after 3, 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days. Reproductive and enzymatic activities of earthworms decreased with increasing the rate of Al applied. The inhibition of weight, enzyme activities and Al concentration of earthworm was lower in organically amended soils than in unamended soils. At the end of the incubation, earthworm weight and enzymatic activities in highly contaminated soils increased and Al concentration in earthworm tissues decreased as the relative amount of humic acids applied to soil increased, following the order unamended soil

Abstract: A new approach to simulating the dendritic growth of pure metals, based on a recent volume of fluid (VOF) method with PLIC (piecewise linear interface calculation) reconstruction of the interface, is presented. The energy equation is solved using a diffuse-interface method, which avoids the need to apply the thermal boundary conditions directly at the solid front. The thermal gradients at both sides of the interface, which are needed to obtain the front velocity, are calculated with the aid of a distance function to the reconstructed interface. The advection equation of a discretized solid fraction function is solved using the unsplit VOF advection method proposed by López et al. [J. Comput. Phys. 195 (2004) 718–742] (extended to three dimensions by Hernández et al. [Int. J. Numer. Methods Fluids 58 (2008) 897–921]), and the interface curvature is computed using an improved height function technique, which provides second-order accuracy. The proposed methodology is assessed by comparing the numerical results with analytical solutions and with results obtained by different authors for the formation of complex dendritic structures in two and three dimensions. Abstract: The south-American cordgrass, Spartina densiflora, has become the dominant plant species on recent tidal marsh restorations in the Doñana National Park (SW Spain). We examined the effect of different doses of glyphosate (720–7200ga.i.ha−1) and imazamox (20–68ga.i.ha−1) on growth and photosynthetic apparatus of S. densiflora. Imazamox had no effect on neither on growth nor photosynthetic apparatus of S. densiflora. On the contrary, glyphosate inhibited photochemical efficiency of photosynthesis from day one. Net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and photosynthetic pigments and the number of new tillers were reduced. Glyphosate at high doses (ca. 7200ga.i.ha−1) could be an appropriate method of control, since it has a negative effect over the photosynthetic apparatus and growth of S. densiflora. Furthermore, glyphosate and its main metabolite, AMPA, were not extracted from the soil, since they were retained by the very high iron and aluminum oxide content of this soil. Application of sewage sludge to agricultural lands is a current practice in EU. European legislation permits its use when concentrations of metals in soil do not increase above the maximum permissible limits. In order to assess the fate and the effects on representative soil organisms of sewage sludge amendments on agricultural lands, a soil microcosm (multi-species soil system—MS3) experiment was performed. The MS3 columns were filled with spiked soil at three different doses: 30, 60 and 120tha−1 fresh wt. Seed plants (Triticum aestivum, Vicia sativa and Brassica rapa) and earthworms (Eisenia fetida) were introduced into the systems. After a 21-d exposure period, a statistically significant increase for Cd, Cu, Zn and Hg concentrations was found for the soils treated with the highest application rate. Dose-related increase was observed for nickel concentrations in leachates. Plants and earthworm metal body burden offer much more information than metal concentrations and help to understand the potential for metal accumulation. Bioaccumulation factor (BAFplant−soil) presented a different behavior among species and large differences for BAFearthworm−soil, from control or sewage-amended soil, for Cd and Hg were found. B. rapa seed germination was reduced. Statistically significant decrease in fresh biomass was observed for T. aestivum and V. sativa at the highest application rate, whereas B. rapa biomass decreased at any application rate. Abstract: Cadmium, lead, copper, and zinc were measured in tissues of 21 loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) from the southwestern Mediterranean coastline. Mean concentrations (dry weight) of essential elements (Zn and Cu) were 107 and 21.6μg/g in liver, 27.9 and 3.8μg/g in kidney, 65.4 and 5.0μg/g in pectoral muscle, 11.1 and 3.45μg/g in brain, and finally 19.2μg/g and undetected in bone, respectively. Mean concentrations of heavy metals (Cd and Pb) were 23.4 and 2.8μg/g in liver, 31.5 and 0.5μg/g in kidney, 0.2 and 0.3μg/g in pectoral muscle, 0.2 and 0.7μg/g in brain, and undetected and 1.2μg/g in bone, respectively. Metal concentrations were similar to other studies conducted on Mediterranean turtles. However, cadmium concentrations varied widely among individuals, which has been associated with potential sources of cadmium in Mediterranean Sea. The significance of meaningful work for quality of work life has been confirmed by research showing its importance both as regards to employee motivation, well-being, and commitment as well as organizational outcomes such as turnover intentions, citizenship behavior, and customer satisfaction. In explaining what makes work meaningful, Self-Determination Theory (SDT) provides a potent theoretical framework, linking meaningful work to the satisfaction of human psychological needs. Accordingly, we draw on SDT and research on prosocial behavior to examine what we identify as the four most potential psychological pathways to meaningful work: beneficence and the psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. We tested these four antecedents in a three-waves longitudinal design among a large sample of Chilean workers (T1 N = 631, T2 N = 240, T3 N = 148). We found that both autonomy and beneficence prospectively predict subsequent meaningful work above and beyond the other two needs and baseline levels of meaningful work. These results advance theory on key psychological pathways to meaningful work and have important practical implications for how organizations and managers can foster meaningfulness in the workplace through cultivating autonomy and beneficence. • Provides a three-wave longitudinal examination of the key factors influencing meaningful work. • Demonstrates that autonomy prospectively predicts meaningful work. • Demonstrates that beneficence – sense of prosocial impact – prospectively predicts meaningful work. Abstract: In this work, a new similarity measure between images is presented, which is based on the concept of predictability of random variables evaluated through kernel functions. Image registration is achieved maximizing this measure, analogously to registration methods based on entropy, like mutual information and normalized mutual information. Compared experimentally with these methods in different problems, our proposal exhibits a more robust performance specially for problems involving large transformations and in cases where the registration is done using a small number of samples, such as in nonparametric registration. Abstract: The increasing volume and diversity of information in biomedical research is demanding new approaches for data integration in this domain. Semantic Web technologies and applications can leverage the potential of biomedical information integration and discovery, facing the problem of semantic heterogeneity of biomedical information sources. In such an environment, agent technology can assist users in discovering and invoking the services available on the Internet. In this paper we present SEMMAS, an ontology-based, domain-independent framework for seamlessly integrating Intelligent Agents and Semantic Web Services. We explored the effects of a textile industry effluent on water quality, habitat quality and structural and functional responses of benthic communities in a lowland stream. Two sampling sites were selected: site 1 was located 300m upstream of the outflow from the textile factory and site 2 was 500m downstream from the discharge point. Samples of water, microbenthos, invertebrates and aquatic plants were taken seasonally. The effluent from the textile industry modified the structure of the microbenthic assemblages downstream, increased the density of organisms and the biomass of primary producers, but diminished the species richness. The oxygen consumption of the microbenthic community was 3× higher downstream of the effluent and abnormal frustules of diatoms were noticed. The richness and abundance of invertebrate taxa were lower at the impacted site. The invertebrate modes of existence and the functional feeding groups were also significantly affected. This study is an important baseline for assessment of lowland streams with high water residence time and a notable development of hydrophytes. It will also provide a baseline for the monitoring and restoration, or remediation, programs using the metrics of biotic integrity, particularly in South American countries where such metrics are rarely employed. Abstract: The phenolic composition of olive roots and stems was studied by high performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. The in vivo levels of the principal phenolic compounds found in olive plants infected by Phytophthora megasperma Drechsler and Cylindrocarpon destructans (Zinssm.) Scholten differed from the levels observed in non-infected plants. When the antifungal activity of these compounds against both fungi was studied in vitro, the most active were quercetin and luteolin aglycons, followed by rutin, oleuropein, p-coumaric acid, luteolin-7-glucoside, tyrosol and catechin. Microscopic study showed that these phenolic compounds affected the growth, morphology and ultrastructure of the fungi. Taken together, these findings suggest that the phenolic compounds present in olive plants play an active role in the protection against pathogen attack. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
