A novel deodorizer that is capable of selectively eliminating the odorous chemicals, such as ammonia, trimethylamine, hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan, is described. The deodorizer is a nanostructured aerogel by nature, consisting of 2,2-6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), transition metal divalent cations (M2+), and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) as the constitutive elements. CNF are firstly mixed with M2+ (M2+, in this paper, typifies Ni2+, Co2+ and Cu2+) to form CNF-M2+ complexes, monodispersed CNT is then mixed to prepare CNT/CNF-M2+ waterborne slurries; CNT/CNF-M2+ hybridized aerogels are finally obtained via freezing-drying of the CNT/CNF-M2+ waterborne slurries. The CNT/CNF-M2+ aerogels are a foam-like structure consisting of CNF and CNT as backbones and M2+ as linkers. The aerogels show higher capabilities (in comparison with activated carbon) for selectively adsorbing ammonia, trimethylamine, hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan. Computing simulations suggest a theoretical conclusion that the odorous chemicals are absorbed in a preferring manner of bimolecular absorptions via the M2+ moieties. The CNT/CNF-M2+ hybridized aerogels are lightweight, eco-friendly, and easy to produce in industrial scales. Our new finding, as is described in this paper, demonstrates potential applications of the TEMPO-oxidized CNF to the field of deodorizations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This study evaluated the biological responses to multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Human monoblastic leukemia cells (U937) were exposed to As-grown MWCNTs and MWCNTs that were thermally treated at 1800 °C (HTT1800) and 2800 °C (HTT2800). Cell proliferation was highly inhibited by As-grown but not HTT2800. However, both As-grown and HTT1800, which include some impurities, were cytotoxic. Proteomics analysis of MWCNT-exposed cells revealed 37 protein spots on 2-dimensional electrophoresis gels that significantly changed (p <0.05) after exposure to HTT1800 with a little iron and 20 spots that changed after exposure to HTT2800. Peptide mass fingerprinting identified 45 proteins that included heat shock protein β-1, neutral α-glucosidase AB, and DNA mismatch repair protein Msh2. These altered proteins play roles in metabolism, biosynthesis, response to stress, and cell differentiation. Although HTT2800 did not inhibit cell proliferation or cause cytotoxicity in vitro, some proteins related to the response to stress were changed. Moreover, DJ-1 protein, which is a biomarker of Parkinson''s disease and is related to cancer, was identified after exposure to both MWCNTs. These results show that the cytotoxicity of MWCNTs depends on their impurities, such as iron, while MWCNTs themselves cause some biological responses directly and/or indirectly in vitro. Our proteomics-based approach for detecting biological responses to nanomaterials is a promising new method for detailed safety evaluations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Multi-walled carbon nanotube/cadmium sulfide hybrid heterostructures were easily synthesized by employing a thermal decomposition of thioacetamide as a sulfide-ion source in an aqueous regime. The resulting cadmium-sulfide phase is comprised of a zinc-blende structure of spherical polycrystalline nanoparticles (cadmium-sulfide nanoclusters) with the subunits of ca. 15nm, deposited on the nanotube surface. The formation of the cadmium-sulfide nanoparticles with zinc-blende structure (cubic crystal) suggests that the local concentrations of reacting ion species in the vicinity of the nanotube surface are different from those in the reaction solution. The cadmium-sulfide nanoparticles are comprised of a stoichiometrically ideal chemical-composition ratio (cadmium: sulfur=1:1.02) of cadmium and sulfur with the valence states of +2 and −2, respectively. The optical responses of the cadmium-sulfide phase for ultraviolet-visible light and photoluminescence spectroscopes show the proper size-effect and inherent optical properties of the cadmium-sulfide nanoparticles.
