Pesticides can have harmful impacts on the environment and living organisms. Thus, removing them from polluted water is crucial. In this study, a bionanocomposite of carboxymethyl tragacanth- grafted -poly(3-aminophenol)/zinc oxide@iron oxide (CMT- g -P3AP/ZnO@Fe 3 O 4) synthesized by in situ copolymerization as an efficient adsorbent to eliminate the acetamiprid pesticide from polluted water. The CMT- g -P3AP/ZnO@Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanocomposite was analyzed utilizing various techniques including FTIR, EDX, FESEM, XRD, BET, CHNSO, and TGA. The results displayed that the resulting nanocomposite with maximum adsorption capacity (Q max) successfully removed the acetamiprid pesticide from polluted water under optimal conditions such as pH of 7.00, 5.00 mg of adsorbent, 20.0 min duration, and 400 mg/L acetamiprid concentration. According to the linear Langmuir isotherm, the Q max of the biosorbent was 833 mg/g. The experimental adsorption data fitted well with Temkin's nonlinear isotherm model. The adsorption kinetic data were closely related to the Weber-Morris intraparticle diffusion nonlinear model. After three repetitive cycles, CMT- g -P3AP/ZnO@Fe 3 O 4 can be outstandingly renewed and recycled without significant reduction in its adsorption efficacy, as evidenced by the adsorption-desorption experiments. In addition, the CMT-g-P3AP/ZnO@Fe 3 O 4 displayed the good antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. We analyzed the problematic textile fiber waste as potential precursor material to produce multilayer cotton fiber biocomposite. The properties of the products were better than the current dry bearing type particleboards and ordinary dry medium-density fiberboard in terms of the static bending strength (67.86 MPa), internal bonding strength (1.52 MPa) and water expansion rate (9.57%). The three-layer, four-layer and five-layer waste cotton fiber composite (WCFC) were tried in the experiment, the mechanical properties of the three-layer WCFC are insufficient, the five-layer WCFC is too thick and the four-layer WCFC had the best comprehensive performance. The cross-section morphology of the four-layer WCFC shows a dense structure with a high number of adhesives attached to the fiber. The hardness and stiffness of the four-layer cotton fiber composite enhanced by the high crystallinity of cellulose content, and several chemical bondings were presence in the composites. Minimum mass loss (30%) and thermal weight loss rate (0.70%/°C) was found for the four-layer WCFC. Overall, our findings suggested that the use of waste cotton fiber (WCF) to prepare biocomposite with desirable physical and chemical properties is feasible, and which can potentially be used as building material, furniture and automotive applications. • We study the potential use of waste cotton fiber in different-layer composites. • We used water, hot pressing and epoxy adhesives to fabricate the novel composite. • Cell wall collapses and chemical bonds enhanced the mechanical bonding. • It showed better mechanical properties compared to existing medium density boards. • Four-layer waste cotton fiber composite are the best preparation process. The reuse of açaí seeds is an organic approach for valorizing biomass, encouraging the public policies of circular economy, which reduces the human impact on the production chain processes. This research proposes an alternative for açaí seed as a filler in castor oil-based polyurethane, obtaining eco-sorbent to evaluate the sorption capacity for another impactful food industry by-product: waste cooking oil (WCO). Eco-sorbents were obtained with castor oil based-polyol and isocyanate (MDI) by mass mixing equal to 1:1 (OH:NCO), reinforced with açaí seed residue (5–20 wt%). The samples were characterized by techniques scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (OM), apparent density, contact angle, infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Sorption capacity and efficiency were evaluated as a function of the fiber content, with tests performed in times of 30–180 s in two systems: oil and oil/water. The results showed that the eco-sorbents had a hydrophobic nature (θ > 98.3°) and macroporous morphology (pore size from 152 to 119 μm), which allowed the adsorption of residual cooking oil by the porous structure. The kinetics study showed that the sample with greater fiber content (15% wt.) reached the equilibrium in a short time compared to the neat PU for the oil system, with a sorption capacity of 9.50 g g−1 in the first 30 s. For the oil/water system, an opposite behavior could be observed, with a sorption capacity of 9.98 g g−1 in the 150 s equilibrium time. The Langmuir isotherm model presented a maximum adsorption capacity of 10.42 g g−1. However, the Freundlich isotherm model had a better fit to the experimental data with R2 (0.97) and lower chi-square (0.159), showing favorable adsorption (n = 1.496). Thus, it was proved that the weak interactions (connection H) and the binding energy of the predominant physisorption for the oil/water system. Thus, developed eco-sorbents are an excellent option for the sorption of WCO. In order to vitalize the use of wood, which is a sustainable resource, increase the utilization of resources through the recycling of wood waste, and reduce environmental pollution in the waste disposal process, biocomposite was manufactured by using biochar which can be produced with wood waste and is effective in carbon isolation. The thermal characteristics and acetaldehyde adsorption performance of the prepared biocomposite were evaluated based on the pore characteristics, surface functional groups, crystal structure, and elemental analysis results of the biochar. As a result of the experiment, as the content of biochar increased, the thermal conductivity of the biocomposite decreased and the specific heat was not affected. The acetaldehyde concentration tended to decrease as the content of biochar increased, adsorbed up to 4.4685 ppm of acetaldehyde more than the reference. Wood is a sustainable resource and building material. It provides an excellent response to climate change and has excellent insulation performance. However, structural defects may occur due to decay from moisture, resulting in poor dimensional stability. The rich organic substances contained in wood can lead to mold when the moisture content is consistently high, adversely affecting the health of occupants. Therefore, we attempted to compensate for the disadvantages of wood in regard to water stability while maintaining the high thermal insulation performance and carbon dioxide storage capacity, using biochar from thermally decomposed spruce under oxygen limiting conditions. A wood-derived biocomposite was prepared by mixing biochar and soft wood-based chips using the hot-press method, and the thermal conductivity, specific heat, water vapor resistance factor, moisture adsorption, and moisture desorption performances were analyzed. The thermal conductivity of WB10 with 10 wt% biochar content was 0.09301 W/mK. This is a 7.98% decrease from 0.10108 W/mK, the thermal conductivity of WB0 without biochar. The water vapor resistance factor tended to increase when the biochar ratio increased. As the proportion of biochar increased, the equilibrium moisture content in high relative humidity tended to decrease, and it was found that the moisture adsorption and desorption performances were affected by the ratio of the biochar. Composites containing bio-based materials, like banana fiber and poly(lactic acid) (PLA), are potential food-packaging materials. We carried out an environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) of coffee jar lids made from high density polyethylene (HDPE), PLA, and banana fiber to assess their environmental performance. We considered differences in the type of blend (content of PLA and banana fiber in the composite), origin of the banana fiber feedstock (considered as either biowaste or as a co-product from banana production) and banana fiber pretreatment conditions (either no pretreatment or pretreatment using chemicals). Irrespective of the scenario, a lid made from 40% banana fiber and equal amounts of HDPE and PLA performed significantly better in all 18 impact categories when compared to a lid made from 100% PLA. By contrast, the same lid performed significantly better in 3 impact categories only (climate change, photochemical oxidant formation and fossil depletion) when compared to a lid made from 100% HDPE. Thus, environmental performance of the biocomposite strongly depends on which polymer base is replaced by the banana fiber in the composite. Replacing PLA with banana fiber is generally expected to bring environmental benefits.
