In this work, the BaI D(2)Sigma(+) and G(2)Sigma(+) electronic states were investigated using laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTS). The LIF visible spectra were obtained by using the second harmonic of the Ti:sapphire single-mode laser and the Ar(+) and Kr(+) multimode lasers as excitation sources. Previously recorded data, taken from C. A. Leach, A. A. Tsekouras, and R. N. Zare (1992, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 153, 59-72) and from R. F. Gutterres, J. Vergès, and C. Amiot (1999, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 196, 29-44; 2000, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 200, 253-260; and 2000, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 201, 326-327) were combined with the present data. Accurate and improved molecular constants for the X(2)Sigma(+), B(2)Sigma(+), A('2)Delta, A(2)Pi, C(2)Pi, and D(2)Sigma(+) states and 16 term values of the G(2)Sigma(+) state were derived from a simultaneous treatment of the whole data set (12 684 transitions) with a standard deviation of 3.26x10(-3) cm(-1). Rotational analyses of 32 subbands of the near-infrared (3)Phi --> (1)(3)Delta system of LaF have been carried out, involving the levels v = 0-7 of the two states. The three subsystems were first treated as separate singlet systems, directly at equilibrium. Perturbations were revealed in the lower state, ascribed to spin-uncoupling interactions between (1)(3)Delta(3)(v) and (1)(3)Delta(2)(v + 1) levels. A 21 x 21 matrix representation at equilibrium of the complex of interacting levels (v = 0-6) was then constructed, each diagonal v-block corresponding to a triplet model of the rovibrational (3)Delta Hamiltonian. The observed perturbations were completely reduced in the harmonic oscillator approximation with an experimental value of the interaction parameter B(Delta)(0,1) = 0.01322(2) cm(-1). The wavenumbers of some 4500 lines of the system were fitted with an rms error of about 0.005 cm(-1). The E(2)Sigma(+) --> C(2)Pi Rydberg-Rydberg transition of (14)N(16)O near 8492 cm(-1) has been studied by Fourier transform spectrometry in the emission from a dc excited supersonic jet expansion and from a dc discharge under equilibrium conditions. The same transition has also been observed in laser-induced stimulated emission. Line wavenumbers of the 0-0, 1-1, and 2-2 bands, together with data for previously published near-infrared transitions, have been reduced to consistent sets of rovibronic term values for v = 0, 1, and 2 of the A(2)Sigma(+), D(2)Sigma(+), E(2)Sigma(+), and C(2)Pi states which frequently serve as intermediates in the multiphoton excitation of higher Rydberg levels of NO. In this paper a new spectroscopic investigation on the X(1)Sigma(+) electronic ground state of the RbCs molecule is reported. This study is conducted by using laser-induced fluorescence combined with Fourier transform spectroscopy (LIF-FTS). More than 23 000 spectral data are used in a global linear reduction to molecular constants. With these new and improved molecular constants, the potential energy curve has been calculated by the inverted perturbation approach (IPA). Gran Dolina is part of an archaeological and paleontological complex located in the Sierra de Atapuerca karstic system (Burgos, Spain). The Trinchera del Ferrocarril sites were discovered as a consequence of the construction of a railway for the transport of minerals at the end of the nineteenth century. The systematic excavation of the upper Gran Dolina levels was initiated in 1981. In 1993, a 6 m(2)biostratigraphic survey pit was started, reaching level TD6 in 1994. This level was excavated during four consecutive years, yielding human fossils, identified as Homo antecessor, in association with lithic and faunal remains, dating to more than 0.78 m.y.a., (Copyright 1999 Academic Press.)

Technological analysis of lithic artefacts recovered at the Aurora stratum of Atapuerca-TD6 shows that this Lower Pleistocene assemblage is similar to Mode I Technology (=Oldowan tradition) documented at many African sites. Diachronic comparison of the different levels of Gran Dolina allows us to conclude that this particular form of early European technology lacks the production of big flakes to manufacture large tools such as bifaces and cleavers. Rather, it is characterized by the presence of small artefacts, including flakes, denticulates, notches, and side-scrapers, many of which bear use-wear traces of butchery and woodworking. The dominant production technique is orthogonal, which is also reflected in the core recovered at the slightly older level of TD4. The raw materials also found in the Middle Pleistocene occupations at Atapuerca, though with significant proportion differences, have a local origin and include varieties of flint, quartzite and sandstone as well as limestone and quartz. TD6 small artefacts were made from most of these, although the retouched pieces seem to have been preferentially made of the best quality flint, i.e., Cretaceous flint, pointing to the existence of differential use of lithic material, and therefore, some degree of planned knapping behaviour. Most of the "chaînes opératoires" or reduction sequences took place inside the cave, although some artefacts, elaborated on Cretaceous flint, seem to have been retouched off site, possibly near the supply sources., (Copyright 1999 Academic Press.)

Rotational analyses have been carried out on eight thermically excited emission bands of the infrared B1Pi --> X1Sigma+ system of scandium monoiodide between 4000 to 5000 cm-1, recorded by Fourier transform spectrometry. Rotational constants and energies are obtained for X1Sigma+ (v = 0, 1, 2) and B1Pi (v = 0-4) levels from which equilibrium constants of the states are derived. Perturbational effects are observed in the bands with v" = 1 that are interpreted as consequences of the avoided crossing of X1Sigma+ (v = 1) and a3Delta1 (v = 0) at J = 70. A treatment of the perturbation is made using an effective 2 x 2 matrix representation of the rotational energies of the two levels. Copyright 1998 Academic Press.
