Food insecurity, the inadequate access to food due to financial constraints, affects one-sixth of Canadian households, with substantial health implications. We examine the impact of unemployment and the mitigating effect of Employment Insurance (EI) on household food insecurity in Canada. Using the Canadian Income Survey 2018-2019, we sampled 28,650 households with adult workers 18-64 years old. We used propensity score matching to pair the 4085 households with unemployed workers with 3390 households with only continuously employed workers on their propensity towards unemployment. Among unemployed households, we also matched 2195 EI recipients with 950 nonrecipients. We applied adjusted logistic regression to the two matched samples. Food insecurity affected 15.1% of the households without unemployed workers and 24.6% of their unemployed counterparts, including 22.2% of EI recipients and 27.5% of nonrecipients. Unemployment was associated with 48% (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.48, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.32-1.66; 5.67 percentage points) higher likelihood of food insecurity. This association was significant and similar across income levels, full-time and part-time workers, and household compositions. EI receipt was associated with 23% (aOR 0.77, 95% CI 0.66-0.90; 4.02 percentage points) lower likelihood of food insecurity, but this association was only significant among households with lower income, full-time workers, and children under 18. The findings suggest a broad impact of unemployment on working adults' food insecurity and a substantial mitigating effect by EI on select unemployed workers. Food insecurity, inadequate access to food due to financial constraints, affects 17.3% of Canadian children, with serious health repercussions. Capitalizing on the geo-temporal variation in social policies and economic environments across Canadian provinces between 2005 and 2018, we examined the association between provincial policies and economic environments and likelihood of experiencing food insecurity among households with children. Drawn from 13 years of the Canadian Community Health Survey, our sample comprised 123,300 households with below-median income with children under 18 in the ten provinces. We applied generalized ordered logit models on the overall sample and subsamples stratified by Low-Income Measure (LIM). Higher minimum wage, lower income tax, and lower unemployment rate were associated with lower odds of food insecurity in the overall sample. A hypothetical one-dollar increase in minimum wage was associated with 0.8 to 1.0-percentage-point decrease in probability of food insecurity. The probability of food security increased by 1.2 to 1.6 percentage points following a one-percentage-point drop in bottom-bracket income tax rate. One-percentage-point lower unemployment rate corresponded to 0.6 to 0.8-percentage-point higher probability of food security. Higher welfare income and lower housing price predicted lower likelihood of severe food insecurity in the below-LIM subsample. Higher sales tax and median wage predicted higher likelihood of food insecurity among above-LIM households. Income support policies, favorable labor market conditions, and affordable living costs were all related to reduced food insecurity among Canadian households with children. Food insecurity is a pervasive public health problem in high income countries, disproportionately affecting households with children. Though it has been strongly linked with socioeconomic status and investments in social protection programs, less is known about its sensitivity to specific policy interventions, particularly among families. We implemented a difference-in-difference (DID) design to assess whether Canadian households with children experienced reductions in food insecurity compared to those without following the roll-out of a new country-wide income transfer program: the Canada Child Benefit (CCB). Data were derived from the 2015-2018 cycles of Canadian Community Health Survey. We used multinomial logistic regressions to test the association between CCB and food insecurity among three samples: households reporting any income (N = 41,455), the median income or less (N = 18,191) and the Low Income Measure (LIM) or less (N = 7579). The prevalence and severity of food insecurity increased with economic vulnerability, and were both consistently higher among households with children. However, they also experienced significantly greater drops in the likelihood of experiencing severe food insecurity following CCB; most dramatically among those reporting the LIM or less (DID: -4.7%, 95% CI: -8.6, -0.7). These results suggest that CCB disproportionately benefited families most susceptible to food insecurity. As concerns about food insecurity in high income countries grow, there is a need to better understand the impact of social policy decisions on this problem. In Canada, provincial government actions are particularly important because food insecurity places substantial burden on provincial health care budgets. This study was undertaken to describe the socio-demographic and temporal patterning of food insecurity in British Columbia (BC) from 2005 to 2012 and determine the impact of BC's one-time increase in social assistance and introduction of the Rental Assistance Program (RAP) on food insecurity rates among target groups. Using data from the Canadian Community Health Surveys, logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify trends and assess changes in food insecurity among subgroups differentiated by main source of income and housing tenure. Models were run against overall food insecurity, moderate and severe food insecurity, and severe food insecurity to explore whether the impact of policy changes differed by severity of food insecurity. Overall food insecurity rose significantly among households in BC between 2005 and 2012. Following the increase in social assistance benefits, overall food insecurity and moderate and severe food insecurity declined among households on social assistance, but severe food insecurity remained unchanged. We could discern no effect of the RAP on any measure of food insecurity among renter households. Our findings indicate the sensitivity of food insecurity among social assistance recipients to improvements in income and highlight the importance of examining severity of food insecurity when assessing the effects of policy interventions., (Copyright © 2016 The Authors. A recommendation for increased whole grain consumption was released in Canada in 2007 to promote adequate intakes of fibre and magnesium. Since then, a proliferation of 'whole grain' claims on food packaging has been observed, but whole grain labelling is voluntary and unregulated in Canada. Through a detailed survey of bread sold in three supermarkets, this study examined how the presence of front-of-package reference to whole grain relates to (i) the presence and nature of whole grain ingredients, (ii) nutrient content, and (iii) price of the product. Twenty-one percent of breads bore a reference to whole grain on the front-of-package and the front-of-package reference to whole grain was a better predictor of fibre content than any information that could be gleaned from the ingredient list. On average, breads with a whole grain reference were higher in fibre and magnesium and lower in sodium. Mean price did not differ by presence of a whole grain reference, but breads with whole grain labelling were less likely to be low in price. This paper addresses the expected impact of use of macronutrient substitutes by individuals without strong motivation to control macronutrient or energy intake when such modified foods serve as replacements of foods normally ingested rather than as "add-ons". A basic premise of the paper is that individuals are likely to replace a substantial part of the energy equivalent of the original substitution. It further assumes that the macronutrient composition of the additional foods consumed will reflect normal food selection behaviours. The paper derives a description of the expected selection behaviour from examination of the within subject variance in energy and macronutrient intake of 29 subjects followed for 365 consecutive days (the Beltsville One Year Dietary Intake Study). Patterns observed in these subjects were validated through examination of associations between macronutrient intake and energy intake in 600 women, each of whom contributed 6 days of dietary data (USDA CSFII-85). As presently proposed the model suggests that the use of non-caloric fat replacements, by subjects without strong motivation to control fat or energy intake, can be expected to result in a net decrease (less than original substitution) in fat intake and net increases in carbohydrate and protein intakes. Conversely, use of carbohydrate replacements in core foods can be expected to result in net increases in fat and protein intakes and a partial decrease in carbohydrate intake. The magnitude of these net changes is seen to be a function of the extent of replacement of energy.

A study of within-subject variation in the reported food intakes and food selections of 29 adults participating in the Beltsville One-Year Dietary Intake Study suggests that individuals possess characteristics levels of day-to-day variation in intake. Application of Bartlett's test of homogeneity of variance indicated heterogeneity of within-subject variance in energy intake and in selected nutrients controlled for energy. Comparisons of estimates of within-subject variation derived from a split sample of days revealed the relative stability of individuals' magnitudes of day-to-day variation in energy and nutrient intake over time. For some nutrient variables, a large proportion of the observed heterogeneity in within-subject variation could be explained by a linear relationship between subjects' standard deviations and their mean intake levels. However, heterogeneity persisted when subjects' coefficients of variation were compared, suggesting that mean intake differences are insufficient to explain the observed differences in subjects' levels of day-to-day variation. The magnitude of observed variation in an individual's food intake and food selection from one day to the next appears to be a meaningful descriptor of that individual's intake behaviour.
