This paper presents a mathematical model to describe a two-fluid electroosmotic pumping technique, in which an electrically non-conducting fluid is delivered by the interfacial viscous force of a conducting fluid; the latter is driven by electroosmosis. The electrical potential in the conducting fluid and the analytical solution of the steady two-fluid electroosmotic stratified flow in a rectangular microchannel was presented by assuming a planar interface between the two immiscible fluids. The effects of viscosity ratio, hold-up, concentration, and interfacial zeta potential are analyzed to show the potential feasibility of this technique.

Background: Obtaining meaningful temperature for the human body requires identifying a body site that will provide reliable data across a large population. It is important to understand that skin temperature does not solely depend on body-core temperature and may be affected by other physiological and environmental factors. Currently, there is lack of empirical data in correlating facial surface temperature with body core temperature. Present IR systems in use at airports/immigration checkpoints have not been scientifically validated particularly in regards to the false-negative rate. As a result, they may create a false sense of security by underestimating the number of febrile (and possibly infected) individuals. This article evaluates the effectiveness of thermal scanner when it is being used for mass blind screening of potential fever subjects such as SARS or bird flu patients., Methods: Bio-statistics with regression analysis and ROC is applied to analyse the data collected (502) from the SARS hospital in Singapore and conclusive results are drawn from them. The results are vital in determining two very important pieces of information: the best and yet practical region on the face to take readings and optimal pre-set threshold temperature for the thermal imager., Results: (1) The thermal scanner can be used as a first line tool for the mass blind screening of hyperthermia, (2) the readings from the scanner suggest good correlation with the ear temperature readings, (3) an imager temperature threshold should be determined by the environmental factors, outdoor condition in particular, the physiological site offset and the performance characteristics of thermal imager to warrant the most accurate and reliable screening operation., Conclusions: The analysis suggested that the thermal imager used holds much promise for mass blind screening when the readings from a specific region have a good correlation with the ear temperature. From the regression analysis, the best reading is taken from the maximum temperature in the eye region, followed by the maximum temperature in the forehead region. With ROC analysis, a randomly selected individual from the fever group has a test value larger than that for a randomly selected individual from the normal group in 97.2% of the time. The test can distinguish between the normal and febrile groups and an optimum threshold temperature for the thermal imager can be found. The pre-set threshold cut-off temperature for the current thermal imager was found to be 36.3 degrees C with reference to the associated environmental condition. Any temperature readings that exceed this reading will trigger off the alarm and a thermometer will be used to verify the whether the person is having fever.

Preparation of effective adsorbents from pistachio-nut shells was carried out. Optimization of the vacuum pyrolysis parameters prior to activation was carried out to study the effects of vacuum pyrolysis temperature, hold time, and heating rate on the properties of chars and activated carbons, while CO2 activation conditions were fixed at a temperature of 900 degrees C, an activation time of 30 min, a heating rate of 10 degrees C/min, a CO2 flow rate of 100 cm3/min, and a nitrogen flow rate of 150 cm3/min. The optimum vacuum pyrolysis conditions for preparing activated carbons with high surface area and pore volume were identified. The microstructure and microcrystallinity of the activated carbons prepared were examined by scanning electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction techniques respectively while the Fourier transform infrared spectra determined any changes in the surface functional groups produced during different preparation stages. Experimental results show that it is feasible to prepare activated carbons with high BET surface area from pistachio-nut shells.

This article presents an analysis of the frequency- and time-dependent electroosmotic flow in a closed-end rectangular microchannel. An exact solution to the modified Navier-Stokes equation governing the ac electroosmotic flow field is obtained by using the Green's function formulation in combination with a complex variable approach. An analytical expression for the induced backpressure gradient is derived. With the Debye-Hückel approximation, the electrical double-layer potential distribution in the channel is obtained by analytically solving the linearized two-dimensional Poisson-Boltzmann equation. Since the counterparts of the flow rate and the electrical current are shown to be linearly proportional to the applied electric field and the pressure gradient, Onsager's principle of reciprocity is demonstrated for transient and ac electroosmotic flows. The time evolution of the electroosmotic flow and the effect of a frequency-dependent ac electric field on the oscillating electroosmotic flow in a closed-end rectangular microchannel are examined. Specifically, the induced pressure gradient is analyzed under effects of the channel dimension and the frequency of electric field. In addition, based on the Stokes second problem, the solution of the slip velocity approximation is presented for comparison with the results obtained from the analytical scheme developed in this study., (Copyright 2004 Elsevier Inc.)

The effect of activation temperature on the textural and chemical properties of activated carbons prepared from pistachio-nut shells by potassium hydroxide activation was studied. Relatively high activation temperature was required to develop high porosities. However, too high an activation temperature resulted in the burn-off of the carbon structures and the widening of micropores to meso- and macropores. The microstructures and microcrystallinities of the carbons prepared were examined using a scanning electron microscope and a powder X-ray diffraction analyzer, respectively, while the Fourier transform infrared spectra indicated the changes in the surface functional groups that were formed during the different preparation stages.

Activated carbons were prepared from pistachio-nut shells, which are one type of lignocellulosic material, by a two-step physical method. The effects of the preparation variables on the activated carbon pore structure were studied, followed by the optimization of these operating parameters. It was found that the activation temperature and dwell time are the important parameters that affect the characteristics of the activated carbons obtained. The effects of CO(2) flow rate and heating rate during activation were also studied. Under the experimental conditions used, the optimum conditions to prepare activated carbons with high surface area and pore volume were identified. The electroosmotic flow through an annulus is analyzed under the situation when the two cylindrical walls carry high zeta potentials. The analytical solutions for the electric potential profile and the electroosmotic flow field in the annulus are obtained by solving the Poisson-Boltzmann equation and the Stokes equation under an analytical scheme for the hyperbolic sine function. A mathematical expression for the average electroosmotic velocity is derived in a fashion similar to the Smoluchowski equation. Hence, a correction formula is introduced to modify the Smoluchowski equation, taking into account contributions due to the finite thickness of the electric double layer (EDL) and the geometry ratio-dependent correction. Specifically, under a circumstance when the two annular walls are oppositely charged, the flow direction can be determined from the sign of such correction formula, and there exists a zero-velocity plane inside the annulus. With the assumption of large electrokinetic diameters, the location of the zero-velocity plane can be estimated from the analytical expression for the velocity distribution. In addition, the characteristics of the electroosmotic flow through the annulus are discussed under the influences of the EDL parameters and geometric ratio of the inner radius to the outer radius of the annulus.

The transient aspects of electroosmotic flow in a slit microchannel are studied. Exact solutions for the electrical potential profile and the transient electroosmotic flow field are obtained by solving the complete Poisson-Boltzmann equation and the Navier-Stokes equation under an analytical approximation for the hyperbolic sine function. The characteristics of the transient electroosmotic flow are discussed under influences of the electric double layer and the geometric size of the microchannel.

The viscoelastic behavior of a semidilute hydrophobically modified alkali-soluble emulsion (HASE)-C20 polymer in NaCl and NaCl/SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) solutions was determined using a Rheometric fluids rheometer and the data were converted to relaxation spectra. The dynamic moduli can be fitted with a multiple modes Maxwell model. In the presence of increasing amounts of NaCl, the moduli decrease, where G', decreases more rapidly than G". However, in the presence of SDS and 0.4 M NaCl, the dynamic moduli increase to a maximum at a critical concentration and decrease thereafter. The relaxation spectra suggest that the structure of the polymer network is complex and it contains two to six relaxation times, depending on the NaCl or SDS/0.4 M NaCl concentrations. With increasing NaCl concentrations, the fastest peak shifts to longer times while the slowest peak decreases. This corresponds to the destruction of the network as the polymer backbone collapses to form clusters with a larger aggregation number. For HASE in SDS/0.4 M NaCl solutions, the lifetime of both the hydrophobic junction (fastest peak) and network relaxation (slowest peak) shift to longer times, which suggests the strengthening of active junctions by bound SDS molecules. However, beyond a critical SDS concentration, the relaxation time of the polymer and hydrophobic junction decreases to an asymptotic value. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.
