Publisher Summary This chapter discusses different quality attribute models including models for batches, models for growth, and models for globalization. Dealing with general patterns and variation in measured properties or attributes is, in its basic premises the technical goal of batch modeling. This type of model describes the variation resulting from slightly different conditions during growth for all individuals with a common growth history. The modeling of quality attributes and quality related product properties during growth are not well developed. In general, quality attributes important for postharvest handling of fruit and vegetables play a minor role in the production phase, except in floriculture. The globalization of the fruit and vegetable supply chain has been occurring for quite some time. Globalization offers major advantages, but also considerable disadvantages. However, the need to understand how different regions and different seasons across the world affect quality and quality behavior has been neglected. Understanding and integration requires a fundamental approach that incorporates the relevant behavior of the product, both in the preharvest and in the postharvest realm. Quality differences induced by different cultivars, growing sites, soil types, climate, and weather have to be merged and combined into a single description, because traditional modeling approaches are unsuitable to accommodate this integration of knowledge.
