Transition metal selenides (TMSe) are considered as potential anode materials for supercapacitors because of their abundant reserves and high safety.However, their poor conductivity limits their high rate performance and stability.In this paper, an N-doped porous nanocarbon-coated Co 3 Se 4 quantum dots (NCCS-QDs) composite is prepared as the cathode material of supercapacitor. The formation of Co 3 Se 4 quantum dots complies with a size minimization strategy to speed up ion transport. At the same time, the Co 0.85 Se nanosheets are converted into Co 3 Se 4 quantum dots, avoiding the collapse of the nanosheets during the electrochemical process. In addition, the porous nanocarbon coating increases the number of active sites and the contact area between the electrode and the electrolyte, which can provide more ion transport channels and pore sizes, while avoiding the generation of inactive clusters in the electrochemical reaction of quantum dots. The as-assembled NCCS-QDs-2//AC ASCs devices demonstrate excellent electrochemical performance with an energy density of 84.59 Wh kg -1 at a power density of 799.99 W kg -1 .At the same time, the ASCs device showed excellent cycle stability, with 95.6% of the initial capacitance still maintained after 15,000 charge and discharge cycles.The excellent electrochemical performance of NCCS-QDs-2//AC ASC device proves that NCCS-QDs composite material has a broad application prospect in the cathode material of supercapacitor., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. In this work, MgCo 2 O 4 @NiMn layered double hydroxide (LDH) core-shell structured nanocomposites on Ni foam (NF) are synthesized by facile hydrothermal and calcination methods. MgCo 2 O 4 /NF is synthesized first via a hydrothermal reaction and annealing treatment, and then utilized to prepare MgCo 2 O 4 @NiMn-LDH/NF core-shell structured nanocomposites via the second hydrothermal process. It is found that the MgCo 2 O 4 @NiMn-LDH/NF nanocomposite prepared from 6 h hydrothermal reaction (MC@NM-LDH-2) exhibits an excellent specific capacitance of 3757.2 F g -1 (at 1 A g -1 ). Moreover, a high capacitance retention (86.9% after 6000 cycles) and a low internal resistance (Rs) (0.565 Ω) can be achieved. Furthermore, an all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) is assembled using MgCo 2 O 4 @NiMn-LDH/NF-2 as positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as negative electrode. The as-fabricated MgCo 2 O 4 @NiMn-LDH/NF-2//AC ASC shows a high energy density of 62.33 Wh kg -1 at 750 W kg -1 . Meanwhile, the MgCo 2 O 4 @NiMn-LDH/NF-2//AC ASC device possesses an outstanding cycling stability of 93.7% retention of the initial capacitance after 6000 cycles and three ASC devices connected in series can light up a LED bulb for 15 min. Over the past 50 years, fungal natural products have revolutionized medicine, yielding drugs which have enormous therapeutic potential. The aim of this study was to investigate the probable effect of marine fungal natural products on various skin pathogens. Initially, seventy natural extracts obtained from 35 different marine fungal strains were analysed by the agar well diffusion and broth micro dilution assay for their antibacterial action against six human skin pathogens. The minimum inhibitory effects of all active fungal methanolic extracts on targeted pathogens were observed between 90 and 99% at the concentration of 1 mg/mL. The highest activity was recorded by fungal strains belonging to genera Penicillium, Emericellopsis and Simplicillium. Thereafter, possible effects on target bacterial cells were studied by scanning electron microscopy which show significant destruction and structural deformation in the bacterial cell wall. Mining waste such as iron ore tailing is environmentally hazardous, encouraging researchers to develop effective bioremediation technologies. Among the microbial isolates collected from iron ore tailings, Aspergillus aculeatus (strain T6) showed good leaching efficiency and produced iron-containing nanoparticles under ambient conditions. This strain can convert iron ore tailing waste into agriculturally useful nanoparticles. Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR analysis) established the at the particles are protein coated, with energy dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX analysis) showing strong signals for iron. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM analysis) showed semi-quasi spherical particles having average size of 15 ± 5 nm. To overcome the challenges associated with combined bioprocessing of lignocellulosic biomass to biofuel, finding good organisms is essential. An ethanol producing bacteria DBT-IOC-DC21 was isolated from a compost site via preliminary enrichment culture on a pure hemicellulosic substrate and identified as a Clostridium strain by 16S rRNA analysis. This strain presented broad substrate spectrum with ethanol, acetate, lactate, and hydrogen as the primary metabolic end products. The optimum conditions for ethanol production were found to be an initial pH of 7.0, a temperature of 70 °C and an L-G ratio of 0.67. Strain presented preferential hemicellulose fermentation when compared to various substrates and maximum ethanol concentration of 26.61 mM and 43.63 mM was produced from xylan and xylose, respectively. During the fermentation of varying concentration of xylan, a substantial amount of ethanol ranging from 25.27 mM to 67.29 mM was produced. An increased ethanol concentration of 40.22 mM was produced from a mixture of cellulose and xylan, with a significant effect observed on metabolic flux distribution. The optimum conditions were used to produce ethanol from 28 g L -1 rice straw biomass (RSB) (equivalent to 5.7 g L -1 of the xylose equivalents) in which 19.48 mM ethanol production was achieved. Thus, Clostridium strain DBT-IOC-DC21 has the potential to perform direct microbial conversion of untreated RSB to ethanol at a yield comparative to xylan fermentation., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Cutibacterium acnes (or Propionibacterium acnes) is the main target for the prevention and medical treatment of acne vulgaris. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro anti-C. acnes and anti-S. epidermidis properties of some marine fungi isolated from different Indian marine environments. Seventy fungal isolates were obtained from samples collected from the west coasts and Andaman Island, India. Methanol extracts of 35 isolates were screened for their antibacterial properties and 5 out of the 35 isolates displayed significant inhibition as compared with tetracycline. DNA was successfully extracted from these five fungal isolates and phylogenetic analysis was performed. The methanol extracts possessed antibacterial activity against C. acnes and S. epidermidis with MIC values ranged from 0.8 mg/mL to 1 mg/mL. SEM analysis revealed that the extract induces deleterious morphological changes in the bacterial cell membrane. This study has identified some fungi extracts with significant antibacterial activity. Neurodegenerative disorders such as prion diseases and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are characterized by neuronal dysfunction and accumulation of amyloidogenic protein. In vitro studies have demonstrated that these amyloidogenic proteins can induce cellular oxidative stress and therefore may contribute to the neuronal dysfunction observed in these illnesses. Although the neurotoxic pathways are not fully elucidated, recent studies in AD have demonstrated up-regulation of caspases in neurons treated with amyloid beta (Abeta) peptide, suggesting involvement of apoptotic processes. To examine the role of proapoptotic pathways in prion diseases we treated primary mouse cortical neurons with the toxic prion protein peptide PrP106-126 and measured caspase activation and annexin V binding. We found that PrP106-126 induced a rapid and marked elevation in caspase 3, 6, and 8-like activity in neuronal cultures. Increased annexin V binding was observed predominantly on cortical cell neurites in peptide-treated cultures. Interestingly, these effects were induced by sublethal (5-50 microM) or lethal (100-200 microM) concentrations of PrP106-126. Sublethal concentrations of PrP106-126 maintained elevated caspase activation for at least 10 days with no loss of cell viability. Abeta1-40 also up-regulated caspase 3 activity and annexin V binding at both sublethal (5 microM) and lethal (25 microM) concentrations. There were no changes to proapoptotic marker expression in cultures treated with scrambled PrP106-126 (200 microM) or Abeta1-28 (25 microM) peptides. These studies demonstrate that amyloidogenic peptides can induce prolonged activation of proapoptotic marker expression in cultured neurons even at sublethal concentrations. These effects could contribute to chronic neuronal dysfunction and increase susceptibility to additional metabolic insults in neurodegenerative disorders. If so, targeting of therapeutic strategies against neuronal caspase activation early in the disease course could be beneficial in AD and prion diseases., (Copyright 2001 Academic Press.)
