Ship wake detection using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery provides a way to obtain small marine ship information, but it often becomes unavailable and unreliable during a high sea state. Polarimetric information provides a potential way to solve this problem, which can enhance the ship target as well as the ship wake features. However, three challenges still exist in ship wake detection in polarimetric SAR imagery: the unwanted influences of bright and singular points on ship wake detection, the lack of performance analysis of wake detection by new-type polarimetric enhancement methods, and the difficulty of using the assessment criteria for ship wake detection. In this paper, we try to solve the above problems. Firstly, fully polarized SAR imagery of both ship turbulent and Kelvin wake is simulated based on the two-scale composite model, and the Polarimetric Whitening Filter (PWF) and Polarimetric Detection Optimization Filter (PDOF) are applied to the simulated fully polarized SAR imagery to enhance the ship wake features. Secondly, since the bright and singular points resulting from the ship echoes and the polarimetric enhancement methods may lead to misdetections, a logarithm process and z-score normalization pre-processing has been applied to the images. Then, a new assessment criterion for wake detection performance has been formulated, and the probability of missing detections (PMDs) and the probability of false alarms (PFAs) have been defined for two different requirements. And a Radon transform-based ship wake detection method for both ship turbulence and Kelvin wake has been carried out in horizontal–horizontal (HH), vertical–vertical (VV), horizontal–vertical (HV), PWF and PDOF SAR imagery. Finally, an analysis of the wake detection performance has been carried out. The PWF and PDOF can improve the wake detection performance by an average of nearly 50 percent compared with the HH and VV.

The conventional average acceleration approach relies on K-band range observation, containing an unknown bias, which leads to possible degradation of the precision of Earth's gravity field modelling. It also suffers from correlated errors caused by three-point numerical differentiation. In this study, an improved approach is proposed that makes use of K-band range-rate observations instead and overcoming the influence of correlated errors by introducing a whitening filter. GRACE-Follow On data spanning the period from January 2019 to December 2022 were processed by the proposed approach and a series of time-varying gravity field models was derived, referred to as SSM-AAA-GFO in this paper. This model series is compared comprehensively with three official model series. Results demonstrate that all model series are highly coincident below degree 30 and reflect similar time-varying gravity field signals in both large and small basins. After filtering, SSM-AAA-GFO shows uncertainty, in the form of equivalent water height below 2.5 cm, which is comparable with three official model series. The comparison results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach for precisely modelling a time-varying gravity field based on K-band range-rate observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This paper aims to propose an effective dynamic calibration and compensation method to solve the problem that the statically calibrated force sensor would produce large dynamic errors when measuring dynamic signals. Design/methodology/approach: The dynamic characteristics of the force sensor are analyzed by modal analysis and negative step dynamic force calibration test, and the dynamic mathematical model of the force sensor is identified based on a generalized least squares method with a special whitening filter. Then, a compensation unit is constructed to compensate the dynamic characteristics of the force measurement system, and the compensation effect is verified based on the step and knock excitation signals. Findings: The dynamic characteristics of the force sensor obtained by modal analysis and dynamic calibration test are consistent, and the time and frequency domain characteristics of the identified dynamic mathematical model agree well with the actual measurement results. After dynamic compensation, the dynamic characteristics of the force sensor in the frequency domain are obviously improved, and the effective operating frequency band is widened from 500 Hz to 1,560 Hz. In addition, in the time domain, the rise time of the step response signal is reduced from 0.29 ms to 0.17 ms, and the overshoot decreases from 26.6% to 9.8%. Originality/value: An effective dynamic calibration and compensation method is proposed in this paper, which can be used to improve the dynamic performance of the strain-gauge-type force sensor and reduce the dynamic measurement error of the force measurement system. In this paper, a novel maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) optimum receiver design is proposed to reduce the complexity of the conventional optimum receiver. We first propose a multipath channel classification method according to the zero distribution of the channel impulse response; that is, the multipath channel is divided into a minimum phase channel and a non-minimum phase channel. Then, an MLSE optimum receiver design with channel identification based on zero distribution is also proposed. In this design, the distribution of zero can be obtained directly by calculating the Z transform of the channel. Thus, the complexity is reduced. The number of the multiplication reduced is N (2 N + 1) . In addition, 2 N + 1 memory units storing the autocorrelation sequence are reduced. The simulation results indicate that this channel classification method effectively represents the characteristics of the channel. Moreover, the MLSE optimum receiver proposed performs similarly and is less complex than the conventional one. Background. In polarization radar systems with synthetic aperture (SAR), in comparison with conventional ones that use the emission and reception of signals of a fixed polarization, an additional emission channel and three additional reception channels are organized. This significantly increases the amount of information about radar objects and expands the possibilities for improving the quality of target detection. The optimal polarimetric detector is introduced for an ideal situation where the characteristics of the interference are completely known. Such an algorithm provides potentially achievable target detection performance against a background of interference. In the general formulation, the task of detecting a target against a background of noise is formulated as a task of testing statistical hypotheses about the presence or absence of a target based on the observed signal implementation. Materials and methods. The article proposes to consider an algorithm for optimal detection in a polarimetric radar system, which provides the best ratio among many other algorithms between the quality of detection and the amount of statistical information required for this. Conduct research on the detection algorithm associated with the use of a whitening filter. Determine the optimal detection algorithm in a polarimetric radar system and evaluate its effectiveness. Results and conclusions. Thus, an algorithm has been proposed and, based on it, a detector using a polarimetric whitening filter (PBF), which provides almost the same target characteristics as an optimal polarimetric detector, and can provide the best ratio among many other algorithms between the quality of detection and the amount of statistical data required for this information.

Vocalizations play an important role in the daily life of nonhuman primates and are likely precursors of human language. Recent functional imaging studies in the highly vocal common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) have suggested that anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) area 32 may be a part of a vocalization-processing network but the response properties of area 32 neurons to auditory stimuli remain unknown. Here we perform electrophysiological recordings in area 32 in marmosets with high-density Neuropixels probes and characterize neuronal responses to a variety of sounds including conspecific vocalizations. Nearly half of the neurons in area 32 respond to conspecific vocalizations and other complex auditory stimuli. These responses exhibit dynamics consisting of an initially non-selective reduction in neural activity, followed by an increase in activity that immediately conveys sound selectivity. Our findings demonstrate that primate ACC area 32 processes species-specific and biologically relevant sounds. Electrophysiological recordings in marmoset ACC area 32 reveal that nearly half of the neurons respond to conspecific vocalizations and complex sounds. The spectral detection of weak frequency band signals poses a serious problem in many applications, especially when the target is within a certain frequency band under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. A kind of novel technique based on the pre-whitening scale transformation of stochastic resonance (SR) in a symmetric bistable system in a parallel configuration is proposed to solve the problem. Firstly, pre-whitening can ensure the Gaussian distribution of the receiving signal fits the requirements for SR processing. Secondly, scale transformation can help to effectively utilize the properties of a weak signal, especially under a low-frequency band. Thirdly, the SR in a symmetric bistable system in a parallel configuration can try to smoothly reduce the variances in the clutter and additive noise. Fourthly, by subtracting the steady state response of the SR in the selected symmetric bistable system from the parallel output, the spectral detection of a weak signal can be realized successfully. Artifacts induced during patient monitoring are a main limitation for near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) as a non-invasive method of cerebral hemodynamic monitoring. There currently does not exist a robust "gold-standard" method for artifact management for these signals. The objective of this review is to comprehensively examine the literature on existing artifact management methods for cerebral NIRS signals recorded in animals and humans. A search of five databases was conducted based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. The search yielded 806 unique results. There were 19 articles from these results that were included in this review based on the inclusion/exclusion criteria. There were an additional 36 articles identified in the references of select articles that were also included. The methods outlined in these articles were grouped under two major categories: (1) motion and other disconnection artifact removal methods; (2) data quality improvement and physiological/other noise artifact filtering methods. These were sub-categorized by method type. It proved difficult to quantitatively compare the methods due to the heterogeneity of the effectiveness metrics and definitions of artifacts. The limitations evident in the existing literature justify the need for more comprehensive comparisons of artifact management. This review provides insights into the available methods for artifact management in cerebral NIRS and justification for a homogenous method to quantify the effectiveness of artifact management methods. This builds upon the work of two existing reviews that have been conducted on this topic; however, the scope is extended to all artifact types and all NIRS recording types. Future work by our lab in cerebral NIRS artifact management will lie in a layered artifact management method that will employ different techniques covered in this review (including dynamic thresholding, autoregressive-based methods, and wavelet-based methods) amongst others to remove varying artifact types. Measuring the duration of cognitive processing with reaction time is fundamental to several subfields of psychology. Many methods exist for estimating movement initiation when measuring reaction time, but there is an incomplete understanding of their relative performance. The purpose of the present study was to identify and compare the tradeoffs of 19 estimates of movement initiation across two experiments. We focused our investigation on estimating movement initiation on each trial with filtered kinematic and kinetic data. Nine of the estimates involved absolute thresholds (e.g., acceleration 1000 back to 200 mm/s2, micro push-button switch), and the remaining ten estimates used relative thresholds (e.g., force extrapolation, 5% of maximum velocity). The criteria were the duration of reaction time, immunity to the movement amplitude, responsiveness to visual feedback during movement execution, reliability, and the number of manually corrected trials (efficacy). The three best overall estimates, in descending order, were yank extrapolation, force extrapolation, and acceleration 1000 to 200 mm/s2. The sensitive micro push-button switch, which was the simplest estimate, had a decent overall score, but it was a late estimate of movement initiation. The relative thresholds based on kinematics had the six worst overall scores. An issue with the relative kinematic thresholds was that they were biased by the movement amplitude. In summary, we recommend measuring reaction time on each trial with one of the three best overall estimates of movement initiation. Objective quality assessment of three-dimensional (3D) point clouds is essential for the development of immersive multimedia systems in real-world applications. Despite the success of perceptual quality evaluation for 2D images and videos, blind/no-reference metrics are still scarce for 3D point clouds with large-scale irregularly distributed 3D points. Therefore, in this article, we propose an objective point cloud quality index with Structure Guided Resampling (SGR) to automatically evaluate the perceptually visual quality of dense 3D point clouds. The proposed SGR is a general-purpose blind quality assessment method without the assistance of any reference information. Specifically, considering that the human visual system is highly sensitive to structure information, we first exploit the unique normal vectors of point clouds to execute regional pre-processing that consists of keypoint resampling and local region construction. Then, we extract three groups of quality-related features, including (1) geometry density features, (2) color naturalness features, and (3) angular consistency features. Both the cognitive peculiarities of the human brain and naturalness regularity are involved in the designed quality-aware features that can capture the most vital aspects of distorted 3D point clouds. Extensive experiments on several publicly available subjective point cloud quality databases validate that our proposed SGR can compete with state-of-the-art full-reference, reduced-reference, and no-reference quality assessment algorithms. Data, in deep learning (DL), are crucial to detect ships in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. However, SAR image annotation limitations hinder DL-based SAR ship detection. A novel data-selection method and teacher–student model are proposed in this paper to effectively leverage sparse labeled data and improve SAR ship detection performance, based on the semi-supervised oriented object-detection (SOOD) framework. More specifically, we firstly propose a SAR data-scoring method based on fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE), and discuss the relationship between the score distribution of labeled data and detection performance. A refined data selector (RDS) is then designed to adaptively obtain reasonable data for model training without any labeling information. Lastly, a Gaussian Wasserstein distance (GWD) and an orientation-angle deviation weighting (ODW) loss are introduced to mitigate the impact of strong scattering points on bounding box regression and dynamically adjusting the consistency of pseudo-label prediction pairs during the model training process, respectively. The experiments results on four open datasets have demonstrated that our proposed method can achieve better SAR ship detection performances on low-proportion labeled datasets, compared to some existing methods. The operating data of high-speed train electric drive systems contain unknown disturbances and noise, which makes it challenging to identify incipient faults. In order to improve the incipient fault detection capability of the electric drive system, a fault detection algorithm based on dynamic inner independent component analysis is proposed. In this paper, a mathematical proof of the dynamic inner independent component analysis algorithm is first given, and then the method is validated by means of an electric drive system simulation platform. The simulation results show that the dynamic fault detection method proposed in this paper can effectively monitor the operating status of the electric drive system without the need to establish a mathematical model of the system and expertise. Compared with the fault detection methods based on independent component analysis and principal component analysis, the proposed method decreases the fault detection time and reduces the false alarm rate and missing alarm rate. In the increasingly complex electromagnetic environment, main lobe jamming significantly degrades the performance of a wideband radar system. To mitigate this issue, this paper developed a wideband main lobe jamming suppression algorithm based on a distributed array radar. Firstly, this algorithm utilizes eigen-projection matrix processing in the main array to cancel out the main lobe jamming for main lobe maintenance, and then suppresses side lobe jamming through null constraint beamforming. Subsequently, the large aperture of the full array is leveraged to form a narrow beam directed toward the main lobe interference. Finally, joint beamforming using the minimum mean square error criterion is employed. In scenarios where both main lobe jamming and side lobe jamming exist, this algorithm can adaptively cancel main lobe wideband jamming, suppress side lobe wideband jamming, and effectively control the significant loss of the desired wideband signals caused by main lobe jamming within a smaller angular range. The acoustic temperature measurement method has a broad application prospect due to its advantages of high precision, non-contact, etc. It is expected to become a new method for hidden fire source detection in mines. The acoustic time of flight (TOF) can directly affect the accuracy of acoustic temperature measurement. We proposed a quadratic correlation-based phase transform weighting (PHAT-β) algorithm for estimating the time delay of the acoustic temperature measurement of a loose coal. Validation was performed using an independently built experimental system for acoustic temperature measurement of loose coals under multi-factor coupling. The results show that the PHAT-β algorithm estimated acoustic TOF values closest to the reference line as the sound travelling distance increased. The results of coal temperature inversion experiments show that the absolute error of the PHAT-β algorithm never exceeds 1 °C, with a maximum value of 0.862 °C. Using the ROTH weighted error maximum, when the particle of the coal samples is 3.0–5.0 cm, the absolute error maximum is 4.896 °C, which is a difference of 3.693 °C from the error minimum of 1.203 °C in this particle size interval. The accuracy of six algorithms was ranked as PHAT-β > GCC > PHAT > SCOT > HB > ROTH, further validating the accuracy and reliability of the PHAT-β algorithm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This Letter proposes a low-complexity joint equalization and decoding reception scheme based on super-trellis per-survivor processing, making it possible to apply maximum likelihood sequence estimation in high-order underwater acoustic communications under fast time-varying channels. The technique combines trellis-coded modulation states and intersymbol interference states and uses per-survivor processing to track channel parameters. Furthermore, a general trellis configuration for arbitrary order quadrature amplitude modulation signal is provided when truncate the channel is used to describe the intersymbol interference state to 1. The underwater acoustic (UWA) channel causes large propagation delays and reduces the bit error rate (BER) of wireless communication systems. The t-distribution is the optimal distribution to perform UWA noise. In this study, polar-coded differential chaos shift keying (DCSK) and quadrature chaos shift keying (QCSK) communication with UWA noise are considered. First, we have proposed a PDF for the UWA noise channel, and based on this PDF, the theoretical BER is derived. Second, polar coding's performance is determined to demonstrate the improvement in the BER performance compared to the uncoded UWA system by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The experimental results prove that the nearest model that is applicable to the UWA channel is a t-distribution with five and six degrees of freedom. The BER formulas of the proposed systems are derived and compared with the simulation results. The lateral intraparietal area (LIP) plays a crucial role in target selection and attention in primates, but the laminar microcircuitry of this region is largely unknown. To address this, we used ultra-high density laminar electrophysiology with Neuropixels probes to record neural activity in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) of two adult marmosets while they performed a simple visual target selection task. Our results reveal neural correlates of visual target selection in the marmoset, similar to those observed in macaques and humans, with distinct timing and profiles of activity across cell types and cortical layers. Notably, a greater proportion of neurons exhibited stimulus-related activity in superficial layers whereas a greater proportion of infragranular neurons exhibited significant postsaccadic activity. Stimulus-related activity was first observed in granular layer putative interneurons, whereas target discrimination activity emerged first in supragranular layers putative pyramidal neurons, supporting a canonical laminar circuit underlying visual target selection in marmoset PPC. Ships are important targets for modern naval warfare detection and reconnaissance. The accurate detection of ships contributes to the maintenance of maritime rights and interests and the realisation of naval strategy. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image detection tasks play a vital role in ship detection, which has consistently been a research hotspot in the field of SAR processing. Although significant progress has been achieved in SAR ship detection techniques using deep learning methods, some challenges still persist. Natural images and SAR images significantly diverge in imaging mechanisms and scattering characteristics. In complex background environments, ships exhibit multiscale variations and dense arrangements, and numerous small-sized ships may be present, culminating in false or missed detections. To address these issues, we propose a novel SAR ship detection network, namely, a Wavelet-Driven Feature-Enhanced Attention–You Only Look Once X (WDFA-YOLOX) network. Firstly, we propose a Wavelet Cascade Residual (WCR) module based on the traditional image processing technique wavelet transform, which is embedded within an improved Spatial Pyramid Pooling (SPP) module, culminating in the formation of the effective wavelet transform-based SPP module (WSPP). The WSPP compensates for the loss of fine-grained feature information during pooling, enhancing the capability of the network to detect ships amidst complex background interference. Secondly, a Global and Local Feature Attention Enhancement (GLFAE) module is proposed, leveraging a parallel structure that combines convolutional modules with transformer modules to reduce the effect of irrelevant information and effectively strengthens valid features associated with small-sized ships, resulting in a reduction in false negatives in small-sized ship detection. Finally, a novel loss function, the Chebyshev distance-generalised IoU loss function, is proposed to significantly enhance both the precision of the detection box and the network convergence speed. To support our approach, we performed thorough experiments on the SSDD and HRSID, achieving an average precision (AP) of 99.11% and 96.20%, respectively, in ship detection. The experimental results demonstrate that WDFA-YOLOX has significant advantages in terms of detection accuracy, generalisation capability, and detection speed and can effectively realise more accurate detection in SAR images, consistently exhibiting superior performance and application value in SAR ship detection. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has the advantage of continuous observation throughout the day and in all weather conditions, and is used in a wide range of military and civil applications. Among these, the detection of ships at sea is an important research topic. Ships in SAR images are characterized by dense alignment, an arbitrary orientation and multiple scales. The existing detection algorithms are unable to solve these problems effectively. To address these issues, A YOLOV8-based oriented ship detection and classification method using SAR imaging with lightweight receptor field feature convolution, bottleneck transformers and a probabilistic intersection-over-union network (R-LRBPNet) is proposed in this paper. First, a CSP bottleneck with two bottleneck transformer (C2fBT) modules based on bottleneck transformers is proposed; this is an improved feature fusion module that integrates the global spatial features of bottleneck transformers and the rich channel features of C2f. This effectively reduces the negative impact of densely arranged scenarios. Second, we propose an angle decoupling module. This module uses probabilistic intersection-over-union (ProbIoU) and distribution focal loss (DFL) methods to compute the rotated intersection-over-union (RIoU), which effectively alleviates the problem of angle regression and the imbalance between angle regression and other regression tasks. Third, the lightweight receptive field feature convolution (LRFConv) is designed to replace the conventional convolution in the neck. This module can dynamically adjust the receptive field according to the target scale and calculate the feature pixel weights based on the input feature map. Through this module, the network can efficiently extract details and important information about ships to improve the classification performance of the ship. We conducted extensive experiments on the complex scene SAR dataset SRSDD and SSDD+. The experimental results show that R-LRBPNet has only 6.8 MB of model memory, which can achieve 78.2% detection accuracy, 64.2% recall, a 70.51 F1-Score and 71.85% mAP on the SRSDD dataset. Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling has attracted increasing interest in the past two decades. However, when the fifth-generation (5G) communication low-density parity check (LDPC) code is applied to FTN signaling with low Bahl–Cock–Jelinek–Raviv (BCJR) states of detection and few turbo equalization iterations, an error floor near 10 − 5 is found, which does not exist in the original LDPC used for orthogonal signaling. This can be eliminated through many detection and decoding iterations, but this is unacceptable considering the increase in latency and storage. To solve this problem, we propose an LDPC and Reed–Solomon (RS) concatenation code, shortening, and perturbation scheme to lower the error floor. We propose a parallel encoder architecture for RS component code and a concise algorithm to calculate its constant multiplier coefficients, leveraging a traditional serial encoder, which can also be used for other parallelisms, rates, and lengths. The simulation results show that the proposed concatenation and shortening scheme can lower the error floor to about 10 − 7 . The proposed scheme has an error correction capability for coded FTN signaling and successfully lowers the error floor with the limitation of few turbo iterations and few BCJR states. We present an interferometric sensor for investigating macroscopic quantum mechanics on a table-top scale. The sensor consists of a pair of suspended optical cavities with finesse over 350,000 comprising 10 g fused silica mirrors. The interferometer is suspended by a four-stage, light, in-vacuum suspension with three common stages, which allows for us to suppress common-mode motion at low frequency. The seismic noise is further suppressed by an active isolation scheme, which reduces the input motion to the suspension point by up to an order of magnitude starting from 0.7 Hz. In the current room-temperature operation, we achieve a peak sensitivity of 0.5 fm/ Hz in the acoustic frequency band, limited by a combination of readout noise and suspension thermal noise. Additional improvements of the readout electronics and suspension parameters will enable us to reach the quantum radiation pressure noise. Nearshore ship detection has significant applications in both the military and civilian domains. Compared to synthetic aperture radar (SAR), polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) provides richer information for analyzing the scattering mechanisms of ships and enables better detection of ship targets. However, ships in nearshore areas tend to be highly concentrated, and ship detection is often affected by adjacent strong scattering, resulting in false alarms or missed detections. While the GP-PNF detector performs well in PolSAR ship detection, it cannot obtain satisfactory results in these scenarios, and it also struggles in the presence of azimuthal ambiguity or strong clutter interference. To address these challenges, we propose a nearshore ship detection method named ECD-PNF by integrating superpixel-level GP-PNF and refined polarimetric decomposition. Firstly, polarimetric superpixel segmentation and sea–land segmentation are performed to reduce the influence of land on ship detection. To estimate the sea clutter more accurately, an automatic censoring (AC) mechanism combined with superpixels is used to select the sea clutter superpixels. By utilizing refined eight-component polarimetric decomposition to improve the scattering vector, the physical interpretability of the detector is enhanced. Additionally, the expression of polarimetric coherence is improved to enhance the target clutter ratio (TCR). Finally, this paper combines the third eigenvalue of eigenvalue–eigenvector decomposition to reduce the impact of azimuthal ambiguity. Three spaceborne PolSAR datasets from Radarsat-2 and GF-3 are adopted in the experiments for comparison. The proposed ECD-PNF method achieves the highest figure of merit (FoM) value of 0.980, 1.000, and 1.000 for three datasets, validating the effectiveness of the proposed method. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) enables precise object localization and imaging, which has propelled the rapid development of algorithms for maritime ship identification and detection. However, most current deep learning-based algorithms tend to increase network depth to improve detection accuracy, which may result in the loss of effective features of the target. In response to this challenge, this paper innovatively proposes an object-enhanced network, OE-YOLO, designed specifically for SAR ship detection. Firstly, we input the original image into an improved CFAR detector, which enhances the network's ability to localize and perform object extraction by providing more information through an additional channel. Additionally, the Coordinate Attention mechanism (CA) is introduced into the backbone of YOLOv7-tiny to improve the model's ability to capture spatial and positional information in the image, thereby alleviating the problem of losing the position of small objects. Furthermore, to enhance the model's detection capability for multi-scale objects, we optimize the neck part of the original model to integrate the Asymptotic Feature Fusion (AFF) network. Finally, the proposed network model is thoroughly tested and evaluated using publicly available SAR image datasets, including the SAR-Ship-Dataset and HRSID dataset. In comparison to the baseline method YOLOv7-tiny, OE-YOLO exhibits superior performance with a lower parameter count. Overlapped Time Domain Multiplexing (OvTDM) is a high-rate transmission technology that employs the idea of superposition coded modulation (SCM) scheme for signal generation, aiming to achieve maximum channel capacity sharing. Meanwhile, it is also widely considered as a promising technique toward physical layer security. As a main drawback of such system, a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) issue in this system, arising from multi-layer superposition, can be addressed through intentional clipping. However, the detection at the receiver side is vulnerable to nonlinear distortion caused by clipping, which can degrade the performance. To mitigate this distortion, this paper proposed an iterative scheme for estimating and partially canceling clipping distortion at the receiver. We managed to mitigate the impact of clipping noise as much as possible and minimize the cost of optimizing PAPR, thereby improving the transmission performance of OvTDM in the context of amplitude clipping. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and transformers have boosted the rapid growth of object detection in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. However, it is still a challenging task because SAR images usually have the characteristics of unclear contour, sidelobe interference, speckle noise, multiple scales, complex inshore background, etc. More effective feature extraction by the backbone and augmentation in the neck will bring a promising performance increment. In response, we make full use of the advantage of CNNs in extracting local features and the advantage of transformers in capturing long-range dependencies to propose a Swin Transformer-based detector for arbitrary-oriented SAR ship detection. Firstly, we incorporate a convolution-based local perception unit (CLPU) into the transformer structure to establish a powerful backbone. The local-perception-enhanced Swin Transformer (LP-Swin) backbone combines the local information perception ability of CNNs and the global feature extraction ability of transformers to enhance representation learning, which can extract object features more effectively and boost the detection performance. Then, we devise a cross-scale bidirectional feature pyramid network (CS-BiFPN) by strengthening the propagation and integration of both location and semantic information. It allows for more effective utilization of the feature extracted by the backbone and mitigates the problem of multi-scale ships. Moreover, we design a one-stage framework integrated with LP-Swin, CS-BiFPN, and the detection head of R3Det for arbitrary-oriented object detection, which can provide more precise locations for inclined objects and introduce less background information. On the SAR Ship Detection Dataset (SSDD), ablation studies are implemented to verify the effectiveness of each component, and competing experiments illustrate that our detector attains 93.31% in mean average precision (mAP), which is a comparable detection performance with other advanced detectors. In this paper, we considered the real-time modeling of an underwater channel impulse response (CIR), exploiting the inherent structure and sparsity of such channels. Building on the recent development in the modeling of acoustic channels using a Kronecker structure, we approximated the CIR using a structured and sparse model, allowing for a computationally efficient sparse block-updating algorithm, which can track the time-varying CIR even in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenarios. The algorithm employs a conjugate gradient formulation, which enables a gradual refinement if the SNR is sufficiently high to allow for this. This was performed by gradually relaxing the assumed Kronecker structure, as well as the sparsity assumptions, if possible. The estimated CIR was further used to form a residual signal containing (primarily) information of the time-varying signal responses, thereby allowing for the detection of weak target signals. Satellite monitoring of icebergs in the Arctic region is paramount for the safety of shipping and maritime activities. The potential of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar data in enhancing detection capabilities of icebergs under interchangeable and challenging conditions is explored in this work. We introduce RADARSAT-2 quad-pol C-band data to detect icebergs in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. The location contains two tidewater glaciers and is chosen because multiple processes are present in this region, such as ice formation and its relationship with the glaciers, freshwater discharge. Six state-of-the-art detectors are tested for detection performance. These are the dual-intensity polarization ratio anomaly detector, polarimetric notch filter, polarimetric match filter, symmetry, polarimetric whitening filter (PWF), and optimal polarimetric detector (OPD). In addition, we also tested the parameters of the Cloude–Pottier decomposition. In this study, we make use of a ground-based radar for validation and comparison with satellite images. We show that in calm sea-state conditions, the OPD and PWF detectors give high probability of detection (PD) values of 0.7–0.8 when the probability of false alarm (PF) value is 0.01–0.05, compared with choppy sea conditions where the same detectors have degraded performance (PD = 0.5–0.7). Target-to-clutter ratio (TCR) values for each polarization channel is also extracted and compared to the icebergs’ dimensions. The ground-based radar shows higher values in TCR, compared with satellite images. These findings corroborate previous work and show that sea-ice activity, surface roughness, incidence angle, weather, and sea-state conditions all affect the sensitivity of the detectors for this task.

Constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector is a common method for ship detection in polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images. CFAR detectors greatly depend on the clutter modeling that can be easily affected by the contamination caused by both lower- and higher-intensity outliers, such as spilled oil and intensive targets. Traditional CFAR detectors perform detection in a pixel-by-pixel manner, which ignores the spatial information. Both the bias in clutter modeling and the absence of spatial information can degrade the ship target detection performance. In this study, a superpixel-level polarimetric bilateral truncated statistics CFAR detector is proposed to promote the ship target detection performance in complex ocean scenarios. As the preprocessing of the PolSAR image, the superpixel segmentation is conducted based on the multilook polarimetric whitening filter result to select candidate ship target superpixels for bilateral truncation and background clutter modeling. The elliptical truncation is expanded to a complex situation and the relationship between the second moments before and after truncation is derived. The maximum-likelihood estimation estimator of the equivalent number of looks based on the bilateral truncation distribution is derived and compared with other parameter estimators. The influence of the truncation depth on estimator performance is analyzed, according to which the adaptive bilateral truncation method is determined. The Gaussian mixture model and the Parzen window kernel method are compared with the model-based method and utilized for data fitting. The proposed method performs bilateral truncation based on the superpixel segmentation result to provide pure clutter samples for accurate parameter estimation and clutter distribution modeling, reducing time consumption and false alarms. The conventional average acceleration approach relies on K-band range observation, containing an unknown bias, which leads to possible degradation of the precision of Earth’s gravity field modelling. It also suffers from correlated errors caused by three-point numerical differentiation. In this study, an improved approach is proposed that makes use of K-band range-rate observations instead and overcoming the influence of correlated errors by introducing a whitening filter. GRACE-Follow On data spanning the period from January 2019 to December 2022 were processed by the proposed approach and a series of time-varying gravity field models was derived, referred to as SSM-AAA-GFO in this paper. This model series is compared comprehensively with three official model series. Results demonstrate that all model series are highly coincident below degree 30 and reflect similar time-varying gravity field signals in both large and small basins. After filtering, SSM-AAA-GFO shows uncertainty, in the form of equivalent water height below 2.5 cm, which is comparable with three official model series. The comparison results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach for precisely modelling a time-varying gravity field based on K-band range-rate observations.

This paper, intends to survey major ship detection models and techniques based on conventional methods of modelling statistical data and also models based on deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) using satellite-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. We aim to extract current research directions and limitations of existing models to gain insight understanding and suggestions from vast amount of research in ship detection using SAR. The literature review addresses key methods demonstrated by researchers for ship detections in SAR. Despite of rigorous research in this domain the application of organized knowledge is still being explored to demonstrate ship detection in SAR imagery field. The orthogonal basis functions (OBFs) method is a prevailing choice for the detection of undersurface magnetic anomaly targets. However, it requires the detecting platform or target to move uniformly along a straight path. To circumvent the restrictions, a new adaptive basis functions (ABFs) approach is proposed in this article. It permits the detection platform to search for a possible target at different speeds along any course. The ABFs are constructed using the real-time data of the onboard triaxial fluxgate, GPS module, and attitude gyro. Based on the pseudo-energy of an apparent target signal, the constant false alarm rate (CFAR) method is employed to judge whether a target is present. Moreover, by defining the pixel as a relative possibility for a target at a geographic location, a magnetic anomaly target imaging scheme is introduced by displaying the pixels onto the searching area. On-site experimental data are utilized to demonstrate the proposed approach. During the life-cycle service of the constructed large span bridges, they face various threats every day due to the sophisticated operational environments. To ensure the structural safety, it is necessary to detect potential anomaly. Based on different inspection, monitoring and analysis technique, huge amounts of data that direct or indirect reflect structural characteristics can be obtained, and hence the anomaly detection methods developed. In order to provide a summary of relevant information needed by researchers to realize what is concerned about and how current practices deal with these issues, then further promote the application, this paper reviews understanding of anomaly detection in large span bridges. It starts with an analysis of concerned parameters, including dynamic and static structural parameters of a bridge. The various data sources are then commented. Next, existing anomaly detection methods are reviewed and classified. Finally, this paper concisely provides recent progress and discusses future research trends based on the identified knowledge gaps. We hope that this review will help development in this field. The interference of natural factors on the sea surface often results in a blurred background in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) ship images, and the detection difficulty is further increased when different types of ships are densely docked together in nearshore scenes. To tackle these hurdles, this paper proposes a target detection model based on YOLOv5s, named YOLO-CLF. Initially, we constructed a Receptive Field Enhancement Module (RFEM) to improve the model's performance in handling blurred background images. Subsequently, considering the situation of dense multi-size ship images, we designed a Cross-Layer Fusion Feature Pyramid Network (CLF-FPN) to aggregate multi-scale features, thereby enhancing detection accuracy. Finally, we introduce a Normalized Wasserstein Distance (NWD) metric to replace the commonly used Intersection over Union (IoU) metric, aiming to improve the detection capability of small targets. Experimental findings show that the enhanced algorithm attains an Average Precision (AP50) of 98.2% and 90.4% on the SSDD and HRSID datasets, respectively, which is an increase of 1.3% and 2.2% compared to the baseline model YOLOv5s.
