- Abstract
In this study, it is aimed to comparatively examine the market funding levels of public and private banks operating in Türkiye during the covid-19 period. To achieve this goal the study was carried out on the sample of 3 public and private deposit banks based on the 2018-2022 year-end financial data, including before and after covid-19. Thus, the reality of the claim in the public that "Public banks funded the market if there were no public banks, the economy would have collapsed in the pandemic" has been examined. The comparison was made on the basis of asset size, cash loans, deposits and net profit for the period, and the changes in the process were evaluated with ratio and trend analysis. The results obtained revealed that public banks increased their asset size, cash loans and deposit totals more than privately owned banks in the mentioned period, but their profitability fluctuated in the process and they made less profit than privately owned banks. The results obtained are important in the sense that they are an indication that public banks continue to fund the market in difficult economic conditions instead of acting like an ordinary commercial bank and are willing to make less profit despite taking more risks in line with the economic policies determined by the government.
