AbstractThis study improved the vibratory probe compaction (VPC) technique by combining it with well-point dewatering to address the challenges of treating newly dredged silt ground. Specific methods were presented to determine the operating frequency based on multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) results, as well as the spacing between compaction points derived from vertical vibration velocity measurements. The effects of well-point dewatering were analyzed through field monitoring of groundwater level, pore water pressure, and ground settlement. A comparative evaluation of the reinforcement of the improved and conventional VPC techniques was conducted through in-situ tests. The results indicate that continuous dewatering suppresses the excessive rise of excess pore water pressure during compaction, effectively eliminating equipment tilting and settlement due to sandblasting water, and enhancing construction efficiency by over 40%. The average standard penetration blow count (N63.5) increases from 4.3 to 11.4, the ground bearing capacity reaches 140.8 kPa and the average ground settlement is 42.5 cm. The cone resistance and sleeve resistance also exhibit higher values, and the risk of soil liquefaction is effectively eliminated. The experiments and practices provide some successful experiences for the wider application of this technique in similar newly reclamation grounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has emerged as a transformative technology in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry, with increasing application in civil infrastructure projects. This study comprehensively reviews the research landscape of BIM applications in civil infrastructure through bibliometric analysis. Based on data from the Web of Science database, 646 relevant papers published between 2020 and 2024 were collected, and 416 papers were selected for in-depth analysis after screening. Using bibliometric methods, the analysis reveals the evolution of research trends, identifies key contributors and influential publications, and maps the knowledge structure of the field. Our study shows a significant increase in research output over the past five years, particularly in studies focusing on the integration of BIM with emerging technologies such as Digital Twins, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Machine Learning. The results indicate that the United States, China, and the United Kingdom lead in terms of research output and citation impact. Additionally, based on clustering results and representative keywords, several key research clusters were identified, including BIM in infrastructure lifecycle management, BIM collaboration in large-scale projects, and BIM for sustainable infrastructure design. The potential impact of emerging technologies is challenging for construction management researchers to study, as these technologies have yet to become embedded in current organisational practices. Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) offers a method called formative interventions that may assist in this challenge. However, existing formative intervention methods are not adequately tailored to the study of emerging technologies, necessitating a more immersive engagement of the researcher-interventionist. This article proposes a renewed participatory take on the role of the researcher-interventionist and outlines the actions that researchers can undertake to investigate the future impacts of emerging technology. Specifically, we describe the interventionist role through a study of utility detection activities in which we intervened with emerging Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology at twelve construction sites. We analysed our role through an inductive coding approach using interviews and field visit data. Our findings reveal five interventionist action types for intervention studies with emerging technology. These include shaping conditions, exposing tensions, supporting problem resolution, operating tools, and facilitating reflection. The action types prompted subjects to reevaluate elements of the activity system and helped describe three potential future activity systems that integrated GPR as a new tool. These findings demonstrate that a participatory take on formative interventions provides a potent means to unveil possible activity systems incorporating emerging technologies. We contribute five formal intervention action types to the literature that equip interventionist researchers with methodological tools to use CHAT in a practice-based study of emerging technologies on construction sites. Sustainable construction technologies have recently acquired more attention in the construction industry. However, their adoption has faced different barriers. This study aimed to identify and rank the impediments to sustainable construction technologies in developing countries. A systematic literature review (SLR) method was employed. After screening using inclusion/exclusion criteria, 22 publications were selected for further analysis. Afterwards, ten major impediments were explored with a thematic analysis method. Therefore, the finding of this study reveals that developing countries could enhance the implementation of sustainable technologies and alleviate environmental consequences, boost economic growth, and promote inclusive development by designing and implementing corresponding strategies that could tackle the identified impediments.

Modular integrated construction (MiC) has witnessed increasing adoption in worldwide building projects, driven by various benefits, including improved construction efficiency, reduced on-site labor hours, and minimized waste and pollution. The construction industry has recognized the transportation of prefabricated modules as a huge obstacle to the wide implementation of MiC. In practice, transport planning of prefabricated modules is usually intuitively decided by general contractors based on experience. Intuitive decisions cannot ensure the just-in-time (JIT) module delivery, thereby incurring additional costs of early and late delivery. Motivated by this challenge, this study endeavors to design cost-minimized transportation plans for prefabricated modules using mathematical programming methodology. An integer programming model and a tailored solution method are proposed. Then, we use data from two real building projects in Hong Kong as model inputs to demonstrate the computation of optimal module transport plans using the proposed methodology. Numerical results show that, if the JIT strategy is not considered in module transport planning, the actual total transportation costs will be 21.74% higher than the expected ones. Comparative costs of JIT implementation and nonimplementation indicate the significance of the JIT strategy. Additionally, our proposed method can achieve punctual module delivery and reduce the overall transportation expenses by 10.13%, implying considerable cost savings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to complete the construction of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link subsea tunnels with higher efficiency and quality, the high -precision and rapid docking of subsea tunnels has become a major challenge. Taking into account the characteristics of the ultra-wide steel-shell immersed tube tunnels, a high-precision and rapid docking technology for the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link tunnels, and a set of positioning control systems for the head and tail locations of the immersed tubes was proposed, which includes multi -system linkage technologies such as mooring system, Beidou positioning and measurement control technology, and integrated barge control system. Through practical application, the maximum absoluted eviation of the central axis and the maximum lateral relative deviation of the immersed tube tunnel of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link were both controlled within the design deviation of 依5 cm. The results indicates that the integrated barge for transportation and installation has significant advantages during the high-precision docking process, which provides strong support for the construction of immersed tube tunnels in China. Post-doping construction technology overcomes the difficulties of demanding construction requirements of warm-mix epoxy asphalt mixture (EAM) that limit its application, and it provides a new idea for the scaled application of EAM. To provide reliable support for the application of an epoxy asphalt ultrathin overlay (EAUTO), warm-mix EAM was prepared by simulating the post-doping method in the lab, and the Marshall molding method with reduced specimen thickness was considered. EAUTO moisture susceptibility, raveling resistance, and cracking resistance were evaluated to verify the feasibility of EAUTO molding. Furthermore, EAUTO long-term skid resistance and stripping resistance were analyzed in detail. The results showed that thin-layer molding solves the problem of the inappropriateness of conventional Marshall stability equipment for EAM and has cost-saving and efficiency advantages. The recommended molding parameters for the warm-mix EAUTO were 25 blows/face and a thickness of 30.0±0.6 mm. Despite the reduction in specimen thickness, moisture damage resistance and raveling resistance of the thin-layer EAM specimens were slightly attenuated compared with the original specimens but were acceptable, and the mechanical properties were still better than those of SBS-modified asphalt. Regarding cracking resistance, the evaluation results for the thin-layer specimens demonstrate consistency with those of the original specimens. Additionally, the cracking resistance of gap-graded mixes was better than that of dense-graded ones. The EAUTO showed excellent long-term stripping resistance and skid resistance durability compared with asphalt modified with styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS). The full dress and uniforms of Ming dynasty officials take "four piece system" as the structural framework, presenting the shape characteristics of "Baoyi Boxiu". The research method of "double evidence" was based on the combination of physical object and literature to restore the technical problemes of the structural conflict between the "Baoyi" and "Boxiu" of Ming offical uniforms. The results show that the official attire of Ming dynasty is created through the technique of "choosing sleeves and ears", which not only satisfied the constraints of ritual rules but also achieved the goal of frugality, proving that the creation logic of "whole piece and few cuts" in official attire is well applied in the practice of frugality to cultivate virtue. The asphalt bridge deck pavement (BDP) is usually constructed on site. The on-site construction quality of asphalt BDP is easily affected by environmental conditions, and the carbon emissions and polluting gas emissions during the construction need to be concerned. The development of prefabricated asphalt BDPs is an available way to mitigate the above problems, but application of prefabricated asphalt BDP has not yet realized due to the limitations of existing materials and construction technology. In this study, the objective is to investigate a feasible construction scheme for the prefabricated asphalt BDP on the concrete box-girder bridge. To achieve this goal, a self-compacting epoxy asphalt concrete (EAC) was developed as the prefabricated asphalt BDP material, and an epoxy asphalt mastic (EAM) was developed as the joint treatment material in the assembly of prefabricated asphalt BDPs. Subsequently, a complete and feasible construction process for the prefabricated asphalt BDP was proposed, and the novel prefabricated bridge deck composite structure of concrete box-girder bridge was designed. The results show that the self-compacting EAC has sufficient fluidity and mechanical properties to meet the construction and performance requirements of prefabricated asphalt BDP. The superior physical and mechanical properties and good cooperative work performance with the origin pavement structure make the EAM an available joint treatment material. The feasible construction scheme of prefabricated asphalt BDP is that the self-compaction EAC is paved on the prefabricated main girder to make prefabrication segments, and then the prefabrication segments are transported to the engineering site and assembled. The prefabricated asphalt BDPs are connected by joint treatment with EAM. Given the height different of prefabricated base layer due to the assembly deviation, a wearing layer is constructed on site to achieve a good surface evenness of BDP.

The commercial performance of a construction company (CC) largely depends on the planned work programme. The annual CC work programme is a set of objects of a specific purpose and structure (a building system). The programme has the following characteristics: first, the number of objects; second, the construction technologies provided for in the projects (fully prefabricated, monolithic, brick, etc.); third, the variation of work scopes among objects; and fourth, the construction technology. These CC work programme features are interrelated, i.e., aligned with each other, forming the technological structure (TS) of the CC work programme. Once these attributes were formalised, four partial indicators were obtained: the first assesses the variation in construction objects’ sizes; the second — their number; the third — the number of applied technologies; and the fourth — the technologies. The importance of these indicators was assessed to combine them into an indicator of the technological structure of the annual CC work programme. Its quantitative assessment has scientific and practical importance, providing an opportunity to analyse its impact on the results of commercial activities, to improve the organisational management structure of the company, etc.

New advanced construction technologies have been gaining traction in the construction industry. Because using advanced technologies and tools ensures more accuracy. It implies that more precise measurements for the foundations, perimeters or corners and more in depth charting of existing structures, all of which contributes greatly to creating and offering buildings of high quality. This research aims to quantify the impact of construction technologies success criteria on customer satisfaction (or real estate developers) among residential real-estate developers. The study employed Kano Quality Model (KQM) to achieve research objective. The research starts by identifying the critical criteria of the construction technologies that have impact on the customer requirements and satisfaction. The gaps and the shortcomings between the customer requirements and the capability of the construction technologies are the opportunities of improvement of the construction technologies in the construction sector. Therefore, this research enables manufactures to evaluate their new construction technologies before lunching it in the market and identifying the shortcomings of their technologies as the opportunities of improvement to enhance its success. Results showed that the criterion “Reducing the need for storage area for materials and equipment on site” has the most impact on the customer satisfaction, but its impact on the customer dissatisfaction is negligible. The criteria “Increasing safety on site”, “Reducing the Cost” and “Reducing time” have the most impact on the customer dissatisfaction. Although, construction technologies are promising, but it is still below expectations and needs development in some areas in order to become a practical and widely accepted strategy.

This research aims to overview and navigates the historical trajectory and current challenges of prefabricated housing technology in Libya, examining its evolution through a comprehensive review of historical documents, legislative frameworks, and academic studies. The study dissects adoption patterns, investigating socio-political and economic influences by utilising the narrative review approach. Despite post-Gaddafi legislative shifts, enforcement struggles amid political instability. Affordability concerns and limited governmental support emerge as pivotal financial challenges, impeding widespread implementation. Social factors, encompassing cultural attitudes and awareness, also hinder technology adoption. Implications emphasise the necessity for targeted governmental interventions, awareness campaigns, and public-private collaboration to surmount barriers. This research contributes to the discourse on sustainable housing solutions in Libya, offering insights for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders. The primary factors influencing the adoption of prefabricated housing technology can be categorised into two groups, Technological and financial challenges, and social and logistic challenges. With the rapid development of high-speed railway, the phenomenon of premature failure of protective coatings for steel structures in station buildings is becoming increasingly serious. As the most basic protective measures, it is an important prerequisite to maintain the sustainable development of canopy steel structure to apply fire protection paint and ensure the protection effect within the design period. In order to study the deterioration of fire-retardant coatings and its influencing factors, the application status of fire retardant coatings for steel structures in more than 30 high-speed railway station buildings in China was investigated on the spot, and the influencing factors that may lead to the deterioration of coatings in the coating construction process and the service environment in the later period were emphatically analyzed. The key technical points to ensure the quality of fire-retardant coatings were summarized, and it was proposed that besides strictly regulating the operation in the construction process, the corresponding index values of fire-retardant coatings screened and applied in the open-air environment should be improved to meet the harsh service conditions in some special environments.
