Disturbances in pro/antioxidant balance emerge as a crucial element in bipolar disorder (BD). Some studies suggest that treatment effects on trace element concentration in BD. This study aimed to identify (a) the changes related to oxidative stress in BD and their relationship with trace elements engaged in pro/antioxidant homeostasis; (b) BD biomarkers using machine learning algorithm classification and regression tree (C&RT) analysis. 62 individuals with BD and 40 healthy individuals (HC) were included in the study. The concentration of pro/antioxidant state and concentration of selenium, zinc, arsenic in blood were assessed. We found a higher concentration of total antioxidant capacity, catalase, advanced oxidation protein products and a lower concentration of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), glutathione, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in BD compared to HC. All examined trace elements were lower in the BD group compared to HC. A combination of two variables, 4-HNE (cut-off: ≤ 0.004 uM/mg protein) and GPx (cut-off: ≤ 0.485 U/mg protein), was the most promising markers for separating the BD from the HC. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values for C&RT was 90.5%. Disturbances in the pro/antioxidant state and concentration of trace elements of patients with BD may be a target for new therapeutic or diagnostic opportunity of BD biomarkers. The study assessed selected parameters of redox status in the plasma of patients suffering from high myopia (HM). Thirty-five children with mean age 13.7 ± 2.7 years with HM and 40 healthy children were included. Plasma redox status parameters were determined using colorimetric kits. The levels of retinol, α-tocopherol and coenzyme Q10 were determined with a high-performance liquid chromatograph. Negative correlations were observed between the concentrations of retinol and the axial length of the eye (r = − 0.514 p < 0.001). Increased myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity (p < 0.018), and decreased concentrations of retinol (p < 0.001) and α-tocopherol (p < 0.023) in patients with HM and the axial length of the eye > 26 mm compared to controls were established. Significantly lower retinol and α-tocopherol concentrations were found in patients with the axial length of the eye > 26 mm compared to those with the axial length of the eye ≤ 26 mm (p < 0.001, p < 0.021, respectively). Increased MPO activity in advanced stages of HM may confirm an inflammatory process in HM patients. Reduced retinol and α-tocopherol concentrations and their link to disease progression indicate a need for monitoring their levels and supplementation in children with HM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Research on broiler feeding has increasingly focused on finding effective alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) due to concerns about antibiotic resistance and antibiotic residues in food products. A total EU-wide ban on AGPs was implemented in 2006. However, 70% of antibiotics are still used in animal treatment, contributing to 700,000 deaths worldwide annually due to antibiotic-resistant infections. As a result, researchers have sought natural alternatives, such as probiotics, prebiotics, enzymes, and plant-based preparations like essential oils, which have shown promise in improving broiler production traits and meat quality. The experiment in this study demonstrated that phytogenic supplements improved the European Production Efficiency Factor (EPEF). Additionally, meat from chickens on the phytogenic diet had better water-holding capacity, higher collagen content, and a favorable profile of amines, ketones, and aldehydes, indicating improved quality. These findings suggest that alternatives to AGPs can enhance broiler chicken production and meat physicochemical properties when used in appropriate doses and proportions. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the impact of a phytogenic additive (PA) in broiler chickens' diet on production, physiochemical parameters, and the profile of volatile organic compounds present in broiler chickens' meat. The experiment was conducted in a commercial chicken house, where Ross 308 broiler chickens were divided into two groups, each consisting of 65,000 broilers. One group was fed a diet supplemented with 100 ppm of PA throughout the rearing period. The primary chemical composition of the meat and its physicochemical parameters were determined. A visual assessment of breast muscles for defects and volatile organic compounds were evaluated using an electronic nose system. No statistically significant differences were shown in the production performance of the chickens; while summarizing all production parameters, a higher EPEF index of 31 points in the experimental group was highlighted. Breast muscle quality showed differences in drip loss and WHC (p ≤ 0.01) in favor of the experimental group, and a lower cutting force value (p ≤ 0.05) was found for breast muscles from the experimental group. Nitrosative stress promotes protein glycoxidation, and both processes can occur during an infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess selected nitrosative stress parameters and protein glycoxidation products in COVID-19 patients and convalescents relative to healthy subjects, including in reference to the severity of COVID-19 symptoms. The diagnostic utility of nitrosative stress and protein glycoxidation biomarkers was also evaluated in COVID-19 patients. The study involved 218 patients with COVID-19, 69 convalescents, and 48 healthy subjects. Nitrosative stress parameters (NO, S-nitrosothiols, nitrotyrosine) and protein glycoxidation products (tryptophan, kynurenine, N-formylkynurenine, dityrosine, AGEs) were measured in the blood plasma or serum with the use of colorimetric/fluorometric methods. The levels of NO (p = 0.0480), S-nitrosothiols (p = 0.0004), nitrotyrosine (p = 0.0175), kynurenine (p < 0.0001), N-formylkynurenine (p < 0.0001), dityrosine (p < 0.0001), and AGEs (p < 0.0001) were significantly higher, whereas tryptophan fluorescence was significantly (p < 0.0001) lower in COVID-19 patients than in the control group. Significant differences in the analyzed parameters were observed in different stages of COVID-19. In turn, the concentrations of kynurenine (p < 0.0001), N-formylkynurenine (p < 0.0001), dityrosine (p < 0.0001), and AGEs (p < 0.0001) were significantly higher, whereas tryptophan levels were significantly (p < 0.0001) lower in convalescents than in healthy controls. The ROC analysis revealed that protein glycoxidation products can be useful for diagnosing infections with the SARS-CoV-2 virus because they differentiate COVID-19 patients (KN: sensitivity—91.20%, specificity—92.00%; NFK: sensitivity—92.37%, specificity—92.00%; AGEs: sensitivity—99,02%, specificity—100%) and convalescents (KN: sensitivity—82.22%, specificity—84.00%; NFK: sensitivity—82,86%, specificity—86,00%; DT: sensitivity—100%, specificity—100%; AGE: sensitivity—100%, specificity—100%) from healthy subjects with high sensitivity and specificity. Nitrosative stress and protein glycoxidation are intensified both during and after an infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The levels of redox biomarkers fluctuate in different stages of the disease. The article presents research on the thermal decomposition of individual ingredients and compositions that are physical mixtures of emulsion poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), cadmium yellow, and stearic acid. The results of the tests were TG, DTA, and DTG graphs. From their course, the initial decomposition temperatures, maximum decomposition rate, and final temperatures were determined, and changes in the mass of samples and the values of thermal effects were calculated. The influence of pigment and stearic acid on the thermal decomposition of PVC was investigated. Cadmium yellow, modified in an alkaline medium and containing hydroxyl groups, was also used for the tests. It was found that the presence of both pigment and stearic acid had a retarding effect on the initiation of thermal decomposition of PVC. The addition of CdS modified in an alkaline environment had a more or less similar effect on the initial decomposition temperature of PVC. Depending on the composition of the polymer and the value of the final temperature, different values of thermal effects and the amount of products formed were indicated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The vast majority of people have experienced the problem of back pain at least once in their lives for a variety of reasons. It is well known that regular physical activity at a moderate level has a number of health benefits regardless of age or gender with positive effects on the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory or nervous systems improving fitness levels. During the pandemic, Poland experienced one of the longest periods of school lockdown in Europe. In Portugal, this period was considerably shorter. The aim of this study was to determine the level of physical activity and back pain as well as relationship between physical activity and back pain in a group of Polish and Portuguese students in the following year the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The study was conducted via the Internet among students from Poland and Portugal (398 respondents − 229 from Poland and 169 from Portugal) in October 2022. In the pilot study, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and The Oswestry Disability Index and Neck Disability Index questionnaires were used to assess the level of back pain. Results: There are no statistically significant differences in the level of physical activity and pain complaints of respondents from the two countries. At least half of the students do not report any pain complaints (median in some groups being 0). In the Portuguese men, there is a correlation between the level of physical activity and the Neck Disability Index score (p = 0.0304). Conclusions: The following year, after the pandemic COVID-19 was declared, the prevalence of back pain among students in Poland and Portugal is still significant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Back pain (BP) is a common condition that affects people of all ages. Moderate- and vigorous-intensity physical activity (PA) is a key element in maintaining health. The purpose of this research was to determine the level of physical activity and back pain (BP) in students with long COVID symptoms and to determine the relationship between the level of PA and BP in students with and without long COVID. Methods: A survey was carried out among 402 students from Poland. The inclusion criteria were as follows: student status, age of over 18 years, history of COVID-19, and consent to participate in the study. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to determine the level of PA. The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and the Neck Disability Index (NDI) were used to assess BP. Results: We found that at least half of the students surveyed did not experience any lumbosacral or cervical spine pain. The authors found no association between the level of PA in women and a history of long COVID symptoms, while there were statistically significant differences in intense PA in men (p = 0.0263), with those who did not report long COVID symptoms being more active. With regard to cervical and lumbar spine pain complaints, in our study, these were statistically significantly stronger in students who were observed to have long COVID symptoms. The difference was not significant only for lumbosacral complaints among men. No strong correlations were found between PA level and the severity of BP. Conclusion: Additional investigation is required to comprehend the complex interaction between long COVID symptoms and levels of PA and BP. Hypertension has earned the "silent killer" nickname since it may lead to a number of comorbidities, including diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Oxidative stress and protein glycation play vital roles in the pathogenesis of hypertension. Several studies have shown that they profoundly account for vascular dysfunction, endothelial damage, and disruption of blood pressure regulatory mechanisms. Of particular note are advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs alter vascular tissues' functional and mechanical properties by binding to receptors for advanced glycation end products (RAGE), stimulating inflammation and free radical-mediated pathways. Propranolol, a nonselective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist, is one of the most commonly used drugs to treat hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Our study is the first to analyze propranolol's effects on protein glycoxidation through in vitro and in silico approaches. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was utilized to evaluate glycoxidation inhibition by propranolol. Propranolol (1 mM) and BSA (0.09 mM) were incubated with different glycating (0.5 M glucose, fructose, and galactose for 6 days and 2.5 mM glyoxal and methylglyoxal for 12 h) or oxidizing agents (chloramine T for 1 h). Biomarkers of protein glycation (Amadori products (APs), β-amyloid (βA), and advanced glycation end products (AGEs)), protein glycoxidation (dityrosine (DT), kynurenine (KYN), and N -formylkynurenine (NFK)), protein oxidation (protein carbonyls (PCs), and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs)) were measured by means of colorimetric and fluorimetric methods. The scavenging of reactive oxygen species (hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical, and nitric oxide) and the antioxidant capacity (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical and ferrous ion chelating (FIC) assays)) of propranolol were also evaluated. Additionally, in silico docking was performed to showcase propranolol's interaction with BSA, glycosides, and AGE/RAGE pathway proteins. The products of protein glycation (↓APs, ↓βA, ↓AGEs), glycoxidation (↓DT, ↓KYN, ↓NFK), and oxidation (↓PCs, ↓AOPPs) prominently decreased in the BSA samples with both glycating/oxidizing factors and propranolol. The antiglycoxidant properties of propranolol were similar to those of aminoguanidine, a known protein oxidation inhibitor, and captopril, which is an established antioxidant. Propranolol showed a potent antioxidant activity in the FIC and H 2 O 2 scavenging assays, comparable to aminoguanidine and captopril. In silico analysis indicated propranolol's antiglycative properties during its interaction with BSA, glycosidases, and AGE/RAGE pathway proteins. Our results confirm that propranolol may decrease protein oxidation and glycoxidation in vitro . Background: The COVID-19 disease has a negative impact on the psychophysiological health of populations worldwide, including a decrease in overall physical performance and an increase in fatigue. Fatigue was one of the main symptoms reported by patients and persisted for several weeks after infection with COVID-19. Although the phenomenon of fatigue is still poorly understood, physical activity can be a supportive factor in combating feelings of fatigue and lack of energy. The purpose of this research was to assess the physical activity (PA) and fatigue levels of teachers in Poland and the United Kingdom in the first year after the COVID-19 pandemic., Material and Methods: The online research was carried out among 410 teachers from Poland and the United Kingdom. The PA level was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The level of fatigue was measured using the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS)., Results: Polish teachers, regardless of sex, are more physically active (the differences relate mainly to walking and moderate activity). When assessing the level of fatigue, there is a significant difference between men and women - the former indicate a higher degree of fatigue, with the difference between the sexes being particularly large in the Polish community. Quite clearly, there is an association between less activity (except walking) and more fatigue. All models show a statistically significant effect of total fatigue on total effort. Physical activity is not very strongly correlated with age but the level of fatigue increases with age., Conclusions: The problem of teacher fatigue is unfortunately widespread. They should be encouraged to engage in as much PA as possible during the day. When planning and targeting fatigue reduction campaigns, PA should be encouraged and variables such as age, sex should be taken into account.
