Abstract

One kind of highly flexible REBCO cable (HFRC) has been proposed recent years, which contains REBCO superconducting tapes wound onto a spiral tube. Under external loads, spiral tube is prone to complex deformation, leading to unpredictable characteristics of HFRC. In this paper, we analysis the deformation process of spiral tube under tension and torsion. Based on the geometrical relationship between tapes and spiral tube, the mechanical behavior of tapes in HFRC is further studied.

Abstract

The multi-physics coupling behaviours of HTS coils have now received much attention. In particular, the electromagnetic field, temperature field and mechanical deformation interact with each other during quench of high-field magnets. Accurate analysis of coupling behaviours becomes the key to designing magnets and quench protection. In this paper, a multi-physics coupling model is proposed based on T-A formulation with Neumann boundary conditions. It is convenient to analyse the effects of deformation and temperature on the electromagnetic field, as well as the redistribution of the current between the different layers during quench.

Abstract

Rare-earth (Re)Ba2Cu3O7-x (ReBCO) no-insulation (NI) coil is widely concerned due to its excellent electromagnetic and thermal properties. However, the presence of the turn-to-turn shunts in NI coils leads to that complexity of numerical simulation is increased. In this paper, a modified J model is proposed and the corresponding explicit-implicit hybrid algorithm is designed to calculate NI coils. The numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental data and the circuit model. The homogenization model is also proposed to simulate the large-scale NI coils in the background magnets. The modified J model has good accuracy and fast calculation speed, which can also be used to solve electromagnetic fields of insulation coils efficiently.

13. Critical current degradation in an epoxy-impregnated rare-earth Ba2Cu3O7−x coated conductor caused by damage during a quench.

Abstract

High-temperature superconducting (HTS) rare-earth Ba2Cu3O7−x (REBCO) coated conductors (CCs) have significant potential in high-current and high-field applications. However, owing to the weak interface strength of the laminated composite REBCO CCs, the damage induced by the thermal mismatch stress under a combination of epoxy impregnation, cooling, and quenching can cause premature degradation of the critical current. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic-thermal-mechanical model based on the H-formulation and cohesive zone model (CZM) is developed to study the critical current degradation characteristics in an epoxy-impregnated REBCO CC caused by the damage during a quench. The temperature variation, critical current degradation of the REBCO CC, and its degradation onset temperature calculated by the numerical model are in agreement with the experimental data taken from the literature. The delamination of the REBCO CC predicted by the numerical model is consistent with the experimental result. The numerical results also indicate that the shear stress is the main contributor to the damage propagation inside the REBCO CC. The premature degradation of the critical current during a quench is closely related to the interface shear strength inside the REBCO CC. Finally, the effects of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the epoxy resin, thickness of the substrate, and substrate material on the critical current degradation characteristics of the epoxy-impregnated REBCO CC during a quench are also discussed. 15. Ramping loss and mechanical response in a no-insulation high-temperature superconducting layer-wound coil and intra-layers no-insulation coil

Abstract

The layer-wound coil has a great potential in nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetic resonance imaging owing to the better spatial homogeneity of the magnetic field. However, high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coil wound by no-insulation (NI) layer-wound technique has been verified with a long field delay time. A new method named the intra-layer no-insulation (LNI) winding technique has been proposed to reduce the charging delay time of the coil. This paper is mainly to study and compare the ramping loss and mechanical characteristics of the layer-wound coil and LNI coil. The results indicate that the total ramping loss can be significantly reduced by using the LNI winding method. The effects of the ramping rate of power supply current and the contact resistivity on the ramping loss are also discussed in the paper. Furthermore, the stress distributions in the layer-wound coil and LNI coil are compared, where the cooling process and Lorentz force are both considered. It can be found that the copper sheet of the LNI coil experiences relatively higher stress than its (RE)Ba2Cu3Ox(REBCO) conductor layer. Meanwhile, the magnitude of stress generated in the REBCO conductor of the LNI coil is slightly different from that of the layer-wound coil.
