The purpose of this study is to understand how Latinx preservice teachers (LPSTs) engage their multimodal and multilingual literacies to create comic strips about the knowledge and pedagogies found within their homes located within with U.S.-Mexico borderlands. Drawing on pedagogies of the home and Chicanx/Latinx multimodality, the findings illustrate how the LPSTs used comic creation to document teaching and learning practices of biculturalism, cultural preservation, spirituality, remedios, and the importance of education. This study has implications for developing teacher education pedagogies that are reflective of the linguistic and cultural diversity of LPSTs.

In this paper, we look at pedagogies of care articulated by Latina high school teachers who teach Latinx multilingual students in a variety of content areas, including Latinx studies. We draw on raciolinguistics to understand how the teachers in this study practice "critical linguistic cariño," a radical form of care that considers how linguistic practices of Latinx students are racialized within the U.S. and beyond. The findings demonstrate how critical linguistic cariño is a pedagogical orientation that moves beyond simply caring for multilingual students. Instead, it is praxis that recognizes the sociopolitical contexts of language as central to care. As the teachers in this study have highlighted, to care for Latinx students is to love and actively create spaces for their full cultural and linguistic identities as they exist within these contexts.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common global dementia and is universally fatal. Most late-stage AD disease-modifying therapies are intravenous and target amyloid beta (Aβ), with only modest effects on disease progression: there remains a high unmet need for convenient, safe, and effective therapeutics. Senescent cells (SC) and the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) drive AD pathology and increase with AD severity. Preclinical senolytic studies have shown improvements in neuroinflammation, tau, Aβ, and CNS damage; most were conducted in transgenic rodent models with uncertain human translational relevance. In this study, aged cynomolgus monkeys had significant elevation of biomarkers of senescence, SASP, and neurological damage. Intermittent treatment with the senolytic navitoclax induced modest reversible thrombocytopenia; no serious drug-related toxicity was noted. Navitoclax reduced several senescence and SASP biomarkers, with CSF concentrations sufficient for senolysis. Finally, navitoclax reduced TSPO-PET frontal cortex binding and showed trends of improvement in CSF biomarkers of neuroinflammation, neuronal damage, and synaptic dysfunction. Overall, navitoclax administration was safe and well tolerated in aged monkeys, inducing trends of biomarker changes relevant to human neurodegenerative disease.

IntroductionPrader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder characterized by hypothalamic-pituitary deficiencies including hypogonadism. In girls with PWS, hypogonadism can present early in childhood, leading to genital hypoplasia, delayed puberty, incomplete pubertal development, and infertility. In contrast, girls can present with premature activation of the adrenal axis leading to early pubarche and advanced bone age. We aim to evaluate the progression of puberty and adrenarche signals in girls with PWS.MethodologyA longitudinal retrospective cohort study included girls with PWS followed at a Pediatric Endocrinology Outpatient Clinic in a Tertiary University Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 2002 to 2022. Data collected via chart review included clinical information on birth history, breast and pubic hair Tanner stages, presence of genital hypoplasia, age at menarche, regularity of menstrual cycles, body mass index (BMI) z-score, final height, age of initiation of estrogen replacement and growth hormone replacement, as well as results for PWS genetic subtype; biochemical investigation (LH, FSH, estradiol, DHEA-S); radiographic bone age and pelvic ultrasound.ResultsA total of 69 girls were included in the study and the mean age of puberty onset was 10.2 years in those who started puberty after the age of 8 years. Breast Tanner stage IV was reached by 29.1% girls at a mean age of 14.9 years. Spontaneous menarche was present in 13.8% and only one patient had regular menstrual cycles. Early adrenarche was seen in 40.4% of cases.ConclusionOur study demonstrated in a large sample that girls with PWS often present with delayed onset of puberty despite frequent premature adrenarche. Based on our results, we suggest an estrogen replacement protocol for girls with PWS to be started at the chronological age or bone age of 12–13 years, taking into consideration the uterus size. Further prospective studies are needed.

Objectives We examined the extent to which funded satellite clinics could sustain the California Colon Cancer Control Program (C4P) strategies implemented in health systems to increase uptake of the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) or immunochemical fecal occult blood test (iFOBT) for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in the absence of future C4P funds. Introduction Seven health systems consisting of 38 satellite clinics participated in C4P to examine the sustainability of the program in the absence future Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funding. Methods Quantitative and qualitative methods with a close and open-ended survey approach, and a prospective cohort design were used to examine the sustainability of the C4P in health systems. Results A total of 61% of satellite clinics could not sustain funding stability. Only 26% could sustain funding stability. About, 71%, 26%, and 21% of the satellite clinics could sustain the small media platform, patient navigation services, and community health workers (CHWs), respectively. All the satellite clinics sustained the provider reminder system and professional development. Roughly, 71% and 42% of funded satellite clinics could not sustain the patient navigators and CHWs, respectively. The satellite clinics that could sustain funding stability, sustained patient navigation services and CHWs. Health systems that could not sustain funding stability, could not sustain patient navigation services and CHWs. Qualitatively, the need to support uninsured priority populations, health educators, patient navigators, care coordination activities, outreach services, and provision of enhanced services emerged. The need to support enhanced quality measures, expansion of funding, Medi-Cal Public Hospital Redesign and Incentive coverage, health plan, community linkages, resource sharing, and best practices specifically on CRC screening emerged. Themes such as automated reminder, limited personalized care delivery and capacity, transportation barriers, staff salary, expansion of care through patient navigation, and culturally appropriate media campaign also emerged. Conclusion Overall, to address sustainability barriers, funding stability should be maintained in the health systems.

Background. Chronic total occlusion (CTO) plaque modification (CTO-PM) is often used for unsuccessful CTO interventions. Methods. A multicenter, prospective study included consecutive patients with failed CTO recanalization. At the end of the failed procedure, patients received either a conventional (CB) or drug-coated balloon (DCB) for CTO-PM at the operator’s discretion and underwent a new attempt of CTO recanalization ∼3 months later. Results. A total of 55 patients were enrolled (DCB: 22; CB: 33), with a median age of 66 years. The median J-score was 3, and CCS angina classes III–IV were present in 45% of the patients. After the first CTO-PCI attempt, no in-hospital cardiac deaths were registered. The overall rate of in-hospital myocardial infarction was 3.6%, without significant differences between the DCB and CB groups (4.5% after DCB vs 3.0% after CB, p=0.999). The success rate of the second CTO-PCI attempt was 86.8%, with a periprocedural complication rate of 5.7% and with an overall rate of in-hospital complications of 24.5%, without significant differences between the 2 groups (13.6% in the DCB group vs 32.2% in the CB group, p=0.195). This study examines the relationships between state-provided paid-leave availability and enrollment in public health and nutrition programs (SNAP, Medicaid, WIC) among single low-income women following a birth in the U.S. We hypothesize that women in paid leave states will be less likely to participate in publicly available health and nutrition programs. Data are from the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), a nationally representative panel survey data set (N = 1168). Descriptive tests of significance and probit regression models are used to examine the relationship between paid-leave availability and participation in SNAP, Medicaid, and WIC following a birth. A descriptive analysis suggests significantly lower enrollment in SNAP but not Medicaid or WIC for single low-income women in paid-leave states compared to those in non-paid-leave states. The finding of significantly lower post-birth SNAP participation in paid-leave states holds in probit models that include potentially relevant mother, household, and state controls.

Exosomes or small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) represent a pivotal component in intercellular communication, carrying a diverse array of biomolecules. Several factors can affect sEVs release dynamics, as occurs in hyperglycemia or inflammation. In fact, sEVs release has been associated with the promotion of physio-pathological processes. Among the sEVs cargo, microRNAs play an essential role in cell-to-cell regulation. More concretely, miR-205-5p is related to angiogenesis and cell proliferation. The aim of this study is to understand the specific role of sEVs containing miR-205-5p under high glucose conditions. ARPE-19 cells were cultured with high glucose (HG) for 5 days. sEVs were isolated and characterized. sEVs from ARPE-19 were used for angiogenesis and cell proliferation. HG increased sEVs release but downregulated miR-205-5p cargo expression compared to the control. sEVs from HG-treated ARPE-19 cells promoted tube formation and migration processes. In contrast, miR-205-5p overexpression (by mimic transfection) decreased angiogenesis and cell migration. Our results demonstrate how ARPE-19 cells respond to HG challenge by increasing sEVs with weak miR-205-5p cargo. The absence of this miRNA in sEVs is enough to promote angiogenesis. In contrast, restoring sEVs-miR-205-5p levels decreased it. These findings open new possibilities in sEVs-based therapies containing miR-205-5p against angiogenesis.

Dissection and re-entry techniques are essential to achieve safe and effective chronic total occlusion recanalization. Several studies have demonstrated similar outcomes following extraplaque stenting compared with intraplaque stenting. Dissection techniques most often involve the use of knuckled wires to progress within and beyond the chronic total occlusion segment. In this expert consensus document, the authors compare the properties of different polymer-jacketed wires for their use in dissection techniques. The authors also describe 2 principal knuckle wire behaviors, the rolling and the traveling knuckles. Finally, several adjunctive techniques for safer dissection are described. Neonates admitted to the intensive care unit are at risk of brain injury. Importantly, infants with signs of neurological impairment need prompt diagnosis to guide intervention. Cranial ultrasound (CUS) is the first‐line imaging tool for infants born preterm. New developments in this technology, which now incorporates high‐resolution equipment, have notably improved the performance of CUS in infants born at term and near‐term. On the other hand, the potential of CUS as a diagnostic tool in older infants is less established. The lack of studies focusing on this topic, local protocol variability among clinical sites, and divergent opinions on CUS patterns of disease entities are the main constraints. This review provides an overview of state‐of‐the‐art CUS as a decision‐making tool under different clinical scenarios, such as neonatal encephalopathy, seizures, and suspected central nervous system infection. Toll-like receptors are pattern recognition receptors that bridge the innate and adaptive immune responses and are critical for host defense. Most studies of Toll-like receptors have focused upon their roles in myeloid cells. B lymphocytes express most Toll-like receptors and are responsive to Toll-like receptor ligands, yet Toll-like receptor–mediated signaling in B cells is relatively understudied. This is an important knowledge gap, as Toll-like receptor functions can be cell type specific. In striking contrast to myeloid cells, TRAF3 inhibits TLR-mediated functions in B cells. TRAF3-deficient B cells display enhanced IRF3 and NFκB activation, cytokine production, immunoglobulin isotype switching, and antibody production in response to Toll-like receptors 3, 4, 7, and 9. Here, we address the question of how TRAF3 impacts initial B-cell Toll-like receptor signals to regulate downstream activation. We found that TRAF3 in B cells associated with proximal Toll-like receptor 4 and 7 signaling proteins, including MyD88, TRAF6, and the tyrosine kinase Syk. In the absence of TRAF3, TRAF6 showed a greater association with several Toll-like receptor signaling proteins, suggesting that TRAF3 may inhibit TRAF6 access to Toll-like receptor signaling complexes and thus early Toll-like receptor signaling. In addition, our results highlight a key role for Syk in Toll-like receptor signaling in B cells. In the absence of TRAF3, Syk activation was enhanced in response to ligands for Toll-like receptors 4 and 7, and Syk inhibition reduced downstream Toll-like receptor–mediated NFκB activation and proinflammatory cytokine production. At 1‐year follow‐up, outcomes were comparable between the 2 strategies, target vessel failure occurred in 5.7% and major adverse cardiovascular events in 18.2% (13.6% in the DCB group vs 21.2% in the CB group, p = 0.494). Conclusions. PM after CTO recanalization failure is safe and warrants high success rates when a second attempt is performed. A DCB strategy for CTO‐PM does not seem to ensure higher success or better clinical outcomes, but its use was associated with simpler staged procedures. This trial is registered with NCT05158686. The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of agricultural workers during periods of heat and wildfire smoke exposure and to support the development and implementation of protective workplace interventions. Using community-engaged research and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) framework for policy evaluation, a qualitative descriptive study was conducted with current and former agricultural workers in Central Washington (WA). Twelve participants answered semi-structured questions via interviews or by attending a focus group. Interviews and focus groups were conducted in Spanish, recorded, transcribed, and translated into English; one interview was conducted in English. Using Braun and Clarke's Reflexive Thematic Analysis, five themes were identified among workers from various worksites: 1) Extreme weather and working conditions are becoming increasingly hazardous to worker health, 2) Employers and supervisors lack training and education on current labor laws, and health and safety rules, 3) Employers and supervisors use intimidation and retaliation to ensure productivity and to evoke feelings of replaceability among workers, 4) Workers do not trust regulatory agencies to enforce rules or hold employers accountable, 5) Solutions to climate-driven problems in the agricultural industry need to value worker health and safety, not just productivity. Participants reported experiencing adverse health symptoms related to heat and smoke exposure at work. Workers proposed solutions including improving education, training, and communication, and increased enforcement of existing and forthcoming occupational health and safety rules. The agricultural workforce is essential for ensuring a robust food supply and is facing extreme weather events due to climate change. Western states impacted by wildfires and heat are working to develop and implement occupational health and safety rules. Developing effective policies and interventions inclusive of worker perspectives is critical to adapt to a changing climate, retain a stable workforce and promote optimal health. This study considered whether experiencing cybervictimization is associated with increased recognition of cybervictimization intervention opportunities (i.e., witnessing others' cybervictimization), as well as greater engagement in self-protective (e.g., changing usernames and privacy settings) and other-protective cybervictimization bystander response behaviors. We collected cross-sectional self-report data from an age-diverse (M = 46.29 years, SD = 19.14, range = 15–93) national sample (n = 3002). We hypothesized that: (1) personal experiences with cybervictimization would be associated with increased reports of witnessing opportunities to intervene when others are cybervictimized, greater self-reported use of active bystander behaviors in witnessed situations, and greater use of self-protective strategies; (2) We also expected that engagement in self-protective behaviors would be positively associated with engagement in other-protective bystander behaviors in response to witnessed cybervictimization. To test our hypotheses, we estimated a structural equation model wherein four latent variables were constructed: cybervictimization experienced, witnessed opportunities to intervene, engagement in self-protective behaviors, and engagement in other-protective cybervictimization bystander behaviors. As hypothesized, cybervictimization was associated with witnessing more opportunities to intervene in other's cybervictimization, greater self-reported use of active cyber bystander behaviors, and greater engagement in self-protective strategies. However, the strength of two associations was moderated by age, with stronger relationships between cybervictimization and witnessing opportunities to intervene as well as engaging in bystander behavior for older as compared to younger participants. Contrary to hypothesis, there were no significant associations between use of self and other protective behaviors. Furthermore, greater witnessing of cybervictimization was associated with less engagement in bystander behavior in the final model. The implications for existing bystander intervention programs are described. Longitudinal studies of these associations in multiple age groups and among different cultural groups remain necessary. Introduction: The COVID‐19 pandemic likely affected adolescent sexual behaviors and alcohol use, although how is not well understood. Method: Youth were sampled from the national, online longitudinal Growing up with Media study. They responded via text messaging to open‐ended questions about how the COVID‐19 pandemic may have impacted the sexual behavior and alcohol use of adolescents. Conventional content analysis summarized open‐ended responses. Results: 416 responses were analyzed from 335 participants (aged 15–30, US residents), 81 of whom provided data for both topics. Participants suggested that the pandemic affected some youths' sexual health precautions (increased and varying) and attitudes about sex (positive and negative). They discussed how adolescents met partners during the pandemic, including increased use of online platforms. Participants also suggested researchers investigate sexual risk in the realm of COVID‐19 transmission and the practice of "safe sex." Many participants believed adolescents were drinking alcohol more as a result of the pandemic, both alone and with friends; however, others perceived adolescents were drinking less. Participants proposed researchers investigate adolescent drinking habits during the pandemic, as well as how this compares to before the pandemic and the type and quantity of alcohol consumed. Conclusions: Young people believe adolescent sexual relationships and drinking behaviors changed due to the pandemic, though how varied. Future research could examine the contexts and individual differences that shape these varying behaviors. Overall, this study highlights the importance of directly asking youth about their pandemic experiences and the diversity of views on how the pandemic has influenced adolescent behavior.
