The granular materials of soft particles (SPs) demonstrate unique viscoelasticity distinct from general colloidal and polymer systems. Exploiting dynamic light scattering measurements, together with molecular dynamics simulations, we study the diffusive dynamics of soft particle clusters (SPCs) with spherical and cylindrical brush topologies, respectively, in the melts of SPs. A topologically constrained relaxation theory is proposed by quantitatively correlating the relaxation time to the topologies of the SPCs, through the mean free space (Va) of tethered SPs in the cluster. The tethered SPs in SPCs are crowded by SPs of the melts to form the cage zones, and the cooperative diffusion of the tether SPs in the zones is required for the diffusive motion of SPCs. The cage zone serves as an entropic barrier for the diffusion of SP clusters, while its strength is determined by Va. Three characteristic modes can be confirmed: localized non-diffusive mode around critical Va, diffusive mode with Va deviating far from the critical value, and a sub-diffusive mode as an interlude between two limits. Our studies raise attention to the emergent physical properties of materials based on SPs via a topological design while opening new avenues for the design of soft structural materials. Longitudinal inclined tunnels are commonly encountered in practical projects, yet limited studies are available on determining the stability of the tunnel face with the presence of longitudinal slopes, especially in nonhomogeneous clay. This study employs the upper-bound finite-element method with rigid translatory moving elements (UB-RTME) to investigate the impact of longitudinal slopes on the stability of tunnel faces and their failure mechanisms. To enhance the computational performance of the UB-RTME, a series of mesh updating and refinement technologies is proposed. Furthermore, this study provides a comprehensive numerical implementation specifically designed for nonhomogeneous clay. By considering combined effects of slope inclination, tunnel burial depth, soil unit weight parameter, and undrained shear strength gradient, compact upper-bound solutions of the load factor σs/cu0 of the tunnel face are obtained. The associated failure mechanisms, characterized by the meshlike slip surfaces and their evolution, are also determined. Numerical results highlight that both the load factor σs/cu0 and the failure mechanism of the tunnel face are significantly influenced by the longitudinal slope inclination. Consistent design equations for assessing the stability of the tunnel face are proposed, which can be directly applied in practical scenarios. The high‐speed impact‐resistanct materials are of great significance while their development is hindered by the intrinsic tradeoff between mechanical strength and energy dissipation capability. Herein, the new chemical system of molecular granular material (MGM) is developed for the design of impact‐resistant materials from the supramolecular complexation of sub‐nm molecular clusters (MCs) and hyper‐branched polyelectrolytes. Their hierarchical aggregation provides the origin of the decoupling of mechanical strengths and structural relaxation dynamics. The MCs' intrinsic fast dynamics afford excellent high‐speed impact‐resistance, up to 5600 s−1 impact in a typical split‐Hopkinson pressure bar test while only tiny boundary cracks can be observed even under 7200 s−1 impact. The high loadings of MCs and their hierarchical aggregates provide high‐density sacrificial bonding for the effective dissipation of the impact energy, enabling the protection of fragile devices from the direct impact of over 200 m s−1 bullet. Moreover, the MGMs can be conveniently processed into protective coatings or films with promising recyclability due to the supramolecular interaction feature. The research not only reveals the unique relaxation dynamics and mechanical properties of MGMs in comparison with polymers and colloids, but also develops new chemical systems for the fabrication of high‐speed impact‐resistant materials. Autophagy impairment in Huntington disease (HD) has been reported for almost two decades. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are still unclear. This is partially because it is challenging to model the impact of the disease‐causing mutation, aging, as well as the selective vulnerability of neurons in a single model. Recently developed direct neuronal reprogramming that allows researchers to induce neurons‐of‐interest retaining biological aging information made it possible to establish HD cellular models to study more relevant age‐ and disease‐related molecular changes in neurons. We here summarized the findings from a few latest studies utilizing directly reprogrammed HD neurons and discussed the new insights they brought to the understanding of the age‐ and disease‐related autophagy impairment in HD. Aneuploidy frequently occurs in cancer and developmental diseases such as Down syndrome, with its functional consequences implicated in dosage effects on gene expression and global perturbation of stress response and cell proliferation pathways. However, how aneuploidy affects spatial genome organization remains less understood. In this study, we addressed this question by utilizing the previously established isogenic wild‐type (WT) and trisomic mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs). We employed a combination of Hi‐C, RNA‐seq, chromosome painting and nascent RNA imaging technologies to compare the spatial genome structures and gene transcription among these cells. We found that trisomy has little effect on spatial genome organization at the level of A/B compartment or topologically associating domain (TAD). Inter‐chromosomal interactions are associated with chromosome regions with high gene density, active histone modifications and high transcription levels, which are confirmed by imaging. Imaging also revealed contracted chromosome volume and weakened transcriptional activity for trisomic chromosomes, suggesting potential implications for the transcriptional output of these chromosomes. A spherical weathering body, also called a boulder, is an element of complex geological strata and presents a significant challenge to tunnelling by a tunnel-boring machine (TBM). In this study, ground-based drilling and blasting were used to precondition boulders. To determine the specific charge needed for preconditioning blasting, model blasts were conducted, and the relationships among the specific charge, fragment size, and overburden depth in the model blasts were investigated. The determined specific charge from the model blasts was then modified by considering the overburden depth and used to precondition the boulders for practical TBM tunnelling. The results indicate the following: (1) model blasts were effective in determining the correct specific charge and predicting boulder fragment sizes resulting from blasting; (2) the boulders met in practical TBM tunnelling were successfully preconditioned by using the determined specific charge; (3) the determined specific charge was 3.26 kg/m3, corresponding to an average fragment size 4.5 cm with an overburden of zero and increased with increasing overburden; (4) fragment sizes were dependent on both the specific charge and overburden depth. Through an activation reaction sintering method, porous (Mo2/3Y1/3)2AlC ceramics were prepared by Mo, Y, Al, and graphite powders as raw materials. The phase composition, microstructure, element distribution, and pore structure characteristics were comprehensively studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Archimedes method, and bubble point method. A detailed investigation was conducted on the influence of sintering temperature on the phase composition. Possible routes of phase transition and pore formation mechanisms during the sintering process were provided. The experimental results reveal that at 650–850 °C, transition metals react with aluminum, forming aluminum-containing intermetallics and a small amount of carbides. At 850–1250 °C, transition metals collaborate with graphite, producing transition metal carbides. Then, at 1250–1450 °C, these aluminum intermetallics interact with transition metal carbides and remaining unreacted Y, Al, and C, yielding the final product (Mo2/3Y1/3) 2AlC. Simultaneously, the pore structure alters correspondingly with the solid-phase reaction at different reaction temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of automated equipment for surface crack detection based on digital image acquisition is becoming increasingly popular in the inspection industry. While researchers typically focus on improving the accuracy of recognition methods, the image quality is essential to the effectiveness of the algorithm. However, evaluating the quality of crack images has received little attention in computer‐aided civil and infrastructure engineering. A prominent issue is whether surface cracks are visible and measurable in images. This study proposes an image quality evaluation method using an original standard test chart that simulates cracks of different widths and directions. Geometric transformations and preprocessing techniques are employed in a full‐reference strategy to process the acquired crack images. The resulting information provides quantitative scores for crack visibility and measurability. The proposed Crack Structural Similarity Index is more in line with human perception and offers an accurate evaluation of real image quality. The study shows that Gaussian blur disturbance and random noise disturbance primarily affect measurability and visibility, respectively. Furthermore, the study finds that the quality of the crack image improves with increasing sensor pixel size and using a prime lens over a zoom or long zoom lens. This approach enables comparing image quality collected by different devices in the field environment and provides guidance for optimizing field acquisition parameters. Data assimilation for unconfined seepage analysis has faced significant challenges due to hybrid causes, such as sparse measurements, heterogeneity of porous media, and computationally expensive forward models. To address these bottlenecks, this paper introduces a physics-informed neural network (PINN) model to resolve the data assimilation problem for seepage analysis of unsaturated earth–rockfill dams. This strategy offers a solution that decreases the reliance on numerical models and enables an accurate and efficient prediction of seepage parameters for complex models in the case of sparse observational data. For the first attempt in this study, the observed values are obtained by random sampling of numerical solutions, which are then contributed to the synchronous constraints in the loss function by informing both the seepage control equations and boundary conditions. To minimize the effects of sharp gradient shifts in seepage parameters within the research domain, a residual adaptive refinement (RAR) constraint is introduced to strategically allocate training points around positions with significant residuals in partial differential equations (PDEs), which could facilitate enhancing the prediction accuracy. The model's effectiveness and precision are evaluated by analyzing the proposed strategy against the numerical solutions. The results indicate that even with limited sparse data, the PINN model has great potential to predict seepage data and identify complex structures and anomalies inside the dam. By incorporating coupling constraints, the validity of our PINN model could lead to theoretically viable applications of hydrogeophysical inversion or multi-parameter seepage inversion. The results show that the proposed framework can predict the seepage parameters for the entire research domain with only a small amount of observation data. Cost‐effective, non‐fluorinated polymer proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are highly desirable in emerging hydrogen fuel cells (FCs) technology; however, their low proton conductivities and poor chemical and dimension stabilities hinder their further development as alternatives to commercial Nafion®. Here, we report the inorganic‐organic hybridization strategy by facilely complexing commercial polymers, polyvinyl butyral (PVB), with inorganic molecular nanoparticles, H3PW12O40 (PW) via supramolecular interaction. The strong affinity among them endows the obtained nanocomposites amphiphilicity and further lead to phase separation for bi‐continuous structures with both inter‐connected proton transportation channels and robust polymer scaffold, enabling high proton conductivities, mechanical/dimension stability and barrier performance, and the H2/O2 FCs equipped with the composite PEM show promising power densities and long‐term stability. Interestingly, the hybrid PEM can be fabricated continuously in large scale at challenging ~10 μm thickness via typical tape casting technique originated from their facile complexing strategy and the hybrids' excellent mechanical properties. Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing technology can print multi-material parts with multiple functions/properties, and has great potential for working in harsh application environments. However, the metal blank formed by sintering metal powder material with binder added through L-PBF has an obvious porous structure and insufficient mechanical properties, and few studies have been conducted studying this. In this paper, epoxy resin was used to impregnate the blank of porous metal parts formed by L-PBF with iron-based powder material at a certain temperature, and a cross-linked curing reaction was carried out with three kinds of phenolic resin in different proportions under the action of a curing agent, so as to fill the pores and achieve the desired mechanical properties. The characteristic peaks of each group of epoxy resin were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectrums. The microstructure, decomposition temperature, and residue of four epoxy resin dispersion systems were analyzed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA), and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG). The results show that the density of the porous metal parts was obviously improved, the heat resistance temperature of the parts could reach 350 °C, and the tensile strength of the sample after EP2-1 impregnation was increased by 4–6 times after curing at 160 °C for 6 h. Therefore, the use of an epoxy resin dispersion system can increase the porosity of L-PBF porous metal parts, but can also significantly improve their mechanical properties, which can help them to meet the requirements of applications as model materials, biological materials, and functional materials to provide a feasible solution. As the key component of various energy storage and conversion devices, proton exchange membranes (PEMs) have been attracting significant interest. However, their further development is limited by the high cost of perfluorosulfonic acid polymers and the poor stability of acid‐dopped non‐fluorinated polymers. Recently, a new group of PEMs has been developed by hybridizing polyoxometalates (POMs), a group of super acidic sub‐nanoscale metal oxide clusters, with polymers. POMs can serve simultaneously as both proton sponges and stabilizing agents, and their complexation with polymers can further improve polymers’ mechanical performance and processability. Enormous efforts have been focused on studying supramolecular complexation or covalent grafting of POMs with various polymers to optimize PEMs in terms of cost, mechanical properties and stabilities. This concept summarizes recent advances in this emerging field and outlines the design strategies and application perspectives employed for using POM‐polymer hybrid materials as PEMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The noble-metal-free surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates have gained significant attention due to their abundant sources, signal uniformity, biocompatibility, and chemical stability. However, the lack of controllable synthesis and fabrication methods for high-SERS-activity noble-metal-free substrates hinders their practical applications. In this study, we demonstrate the use of a femtosecond laser direct writing technique to precisely manipulate and modify microstructures, resulting in enhanced SERS signals from Sb 2 S 3 nonmetal-oxide semiconductor materials. Compared with unpatterned Sb 2 S 3 samples, the Sb 2 S 3 microstructures exhibited up to a 16-fold increase in Raman scattering intensity. Interestingly, our results indicate that the femtosecond laser can induce a transformation in the crystalline state of Sb 2 S 3 and significantly enhance the Raman spectrum signal within the Sb 2 S 3 microstructures. This enhancement is also highly dependent on the period and depth of the microstructures, possibly due to the cavity effects, resulting in a stronger local field enhancement.
