Bacground/purpose: Endodontically treated teeth are more prone to vertical root fracture with the mechanical property changes to some extent during root canal treatment. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a bioceramic sealer on the mechanical properties of tooth roots. Materials and methods: Dentin discs were dried by two different methods (ethanol drying and paper points drying) and then filled with a BC sealer named iRoot SP. SEM and EDS were used to analyze the newly formed minerals in dentin tubules. Elastic modulus and hardness of the secondary dentin in areas proximal to the primary dentin (PD-SD) and areas proximal to canal or iRoot SP (SD-C/SD-iRoot SP) were measured using nanoindentation technique. The compressive strength of roots filled with iRoot SP were tested by compressive loading test. Results: (1) Penetration and mineralization: Paper points drying was more conducive to iRoot SP adhesion, spreading and penetration into the dentin tubules than 95% ethanol drying. (2) Micromechanical properties: After filling root canal with iRoot SP, the elastic modulus and hardness of SD-iRoot SP were higher than those of PD-SD (P = 0.001 and P = 0.000). (3) Fracture resistance: The compressive strength of the roots filled with iRoot SP was not significantly different from that of the roots unprepared and unfilled (P = 0.957), but was higher than that of the roots prepared and unfilled (P = 0.009). Conclusion: Excessive drying (95% ethanol drying method) is not conducive to the penetration and mineralization of the BC sealer iRoot SP into dentin tubules. The good bioactivity of iRoot SP was responsible for increasing the elastic modulus and hardness of dentin, which strengthened the prepared roots.

Abstract Background Our study aimed to confirm a simplified radiological scoring system, derived from a modified Reiff score, to evaluate its relationship with clinical symptoms and predictive outcomes in Taiwanese patients with noncystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB). Methods This extensive multicenter retrospective study, performed in Taiwan, concentrated on patients diagnosed with NCFB verified through high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scans. We not only compared the clinical features of various types of bronchiectasis (cylindrical, varicose, and cystic). Furthermore, we established relationships between the severity of clinical factors, including symptom scores, pulmonary function, pseudomonas aeruginosa colonization, exacerbation and admission rates, and HRCT parameters using modified Reiff scores. Results Data from 2,753 patients were classified based on HRCT patterns (cylindrical, varicose, and cystic) and severity, assessed by modified Reiff scores (mild, moderate, and severe). The research literature shows that daylily is a high-quality food raw material rich in soluble sugars, ascorbic acid, flavonoids, dietary fiber, carotenoids, mineral elements, polyphenols and other nutrients, which are effective in clearing heat and diuresis, resolving bruises and stopping bleeding, strengthening the stomach and brain, and reducing serum cholesterol levels. This article reviews the main nutrients of daylily and summarizes the drying process of daylily. In addition, due to the existence of active ingredients, daylily also has a variety of biological activities that are beneficial to human health. This article also highlights the nutritional quality of daylily, the research progress of dried vegetable rehydration technology and dried daylily. In the end, the undeveloped molecular mechanism and functional research status of daylily worldwide are introduced in order to provide reference for the nutritional quality research and dried processing industry of daylily.

Invariant natural killer T cell (iNKT) cells produce large amounts of cytokines in response to α-Galactosylceramide (α-GalCer) stimulation. An analog containing two phenyl rings on the acyl chain, C34, was previously found to be more Th1-biased than α-GalCer and triggered greater anticancer activities against breast cancer, melanoma and lung cancer in mice. Since liver is enriched in iNKT cells, we investigated anticancer efficacy of C34 on neuroblastoma with hepatic metastasis. C34 induced Th1-biased cytokine secretions in the liver, significantly suppressed neuroblastoma growth/metastasis and prolonged mouse survival. The anti-tumor efficacy might be attributed to greater expansions of hepatic NKT, NK, CD4+ T, and CD8+ T cells as well as reduction of the number of SSCloGr1intCD11b+ subset of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in the liver of tumor-bearing mice, as compared to DMSO control group. C34 also upregulated expression of CD1d and CD11c, especially in the SSCloGr1intCD11b+ subset of MDSCs, which might be killed by C34-activated NKT cells, attributing to their reduced number. In addition, C34 also induced expansion of CD4+ T, CD8+ T, and NK cells, which might eliminate neuroblastoma cells. These immune-modulating effects of C34 might act in concert in the local milieu of liver to suppress the tumor growth. Further analysis of database of neuroblastoma revealed that patients with high CD11c expression in the monocytic MDSCs in the tumor had longer survival, suggesting the potential clinical application of C34 for treatment of neuroblastoma.

The influence of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) on COVID-19 outcomes remains uncertain. To address this, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, analyzing 30 studies, to investigate the impact of ICS on patients with COVID-19. Our study focused on various outcomes, including mortality risk, hospitalization, admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), mechanical ventilation (MV) utilization, and length of hospital stay. Additionally, we conducted a subgroup analysis to assess the effect of ICS on patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Our findings suggest that the prior use of ICS did not lead to significant differences in mortality risk, ICU admission, hospitalization, or MV utilization between individuals who had used ICS previously and those who had not. However, in the subgroup analysis of patients with COPD, prior ICS use was associated with a lower risk of mortality compared to non-users (OR, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.90-1.00). Overall, while the use of ICS did not significantly affect COVID-19 outcomes in general, it may have beneficial effects specifically for patients with COPD. Nevertheless, more research is needed to establish a definitive conclusion on the role of ICS in COVID-19 treatment. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42021279429.

In the study of age estimation in living individuals, a lot of data needs to be analyzed by mathematical statistics, and reasonable medical statistical methods play an important role in data design and analysis. The selection of accurate and appropriate statistical methods is one of the key factors affecting the quality of research results. This paper reviews the principles and applicable principles of the commonly used medical statistical methods such as descriptive statistics, difference analysis, consistency test and multivariate statistical analysis, as well as machine learning methods such as shallow learning and deep learning in the age estimation research of living individuals, and summarizes the relevance and application prospects between medical statistical methods and machine learning methods. This paper aims to provide technical guidance for the age estimation research of living individuals to obtain more scientific and accurate results.
