Sequential recommendation systems aim to predict users’ subsequent interactions by analyzing their historical behavior. Significant advancements have been achieved in this field through the utilization of models such as RNN, GRU, and models incorporating the self-attention mechanism. Most state-of-the-art methods enhance recommendation effectiveness by incorporating side information, such as category or brand, within the attention layer to enrich item representations. However, in our pilot experiments, we found that increasing the amount of side information could negatively impact the recommendation performance when integrated directly into the attention layer due to the learning of interdependency among them. To alleviate this problem, we propose Independent Representation of side Information on each item for Sequential recommendation (IRIS). IRIS learns pairs of both item and side information independently, without any fusion among side information in attention layer. In contrast to existing approaches, IRIS avoids direct fusion among side information in the attention layer, opting instead for a novel strategy of learning independent pairs of both item and side information. Our proposed method constructs an attention layer specifically designed to learn these pairs, thus avoiding potential distortions to item representations caused by intermixing side information. Experiments on four public datasets show that IRIS outperforms state-of-the-art sequential recommendation models. Ablation study also indicates robust scalability of side information within IRIS.

The human colonic commensal enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) is associated with chronic colitis and colon cancer. ETBF colonization induces colitis via the Bacteroides fragilis toxin (BFT). BFT secreted by ETBF cause colon inflammation via E-cadherin cleavage/NF-κB signaling. ETBF promotes colon tumorigenesis via interleukin 17A (IL-17A)/CXCL-dependent inflammation, but its bioactive therapeutics in ETBF-promoted tumorigenesis remain unexplored. In the current study, we investigated the caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) in the murine model of ETBF colitis and tumorigenesis. In this study, we observed that CAPE treatment mitigated inflammation induced by ETBF in mice. Additionally, our findings indicate that CAPE treatment offers protective effects against ETBF-enhanced colon tumorigenesis in a mouse model of colitis-associated colon cancer induced by azoxymethane (AOM) and dextran sulfate sodium. Notably, the decrease in colon tumorigenesis following CAPE administration correlates with a reduction in the expression of IL-17A and CXCL1 in the gastrointestinal tract. The molecular mechanism for CAPE-induced protection against ETBF-mediated tumorigenesis is mediated by IL-17A/CXCL1, and by NF-κB activity in intestinal epithelial cells. Our findings indicate that CAPE may serve as a preventive agent against the development of ETBF-induced colitis and colorectal cancer (CRC).

Energy poverty, defined as difficulty meeting the minimum requirements for a thermal environment, is becoming a significant social issue. To provide efficient welfare services, information provision and monitoring are required. However, characteristics of energy poverty, such as inconsistent residential patterns, small living spaces, and limited electricity and telecommunication resources, lead to a lack of information. This research introduces the empirical results of the development of the system. Based on the feedback from welfare workers and experts supporting energy poverty, a monitoring system combining various sensors was prototyped. This system measures temperature, humidity, illuminance, air velocity, CO2, black bulb temperature, occupancy, and noise and generates indicators for occupancy and thermal environment monitoring. Applicability assessment was conducted across 55 energy poverty households in Korea during the duration of cooling and heating. Subjects were living in spaces averaging 6.3 sqm within buildings over 43 years old and renting on a monthly or weekly basis. Electricity and communication are partially supplied. Based on the actual measurement data and field surveys, the configuration of an energy poverty monitoring system was proposed. In particular, the applicability of the simple methodology for the determination of black bulb temperature, metabolic rate, and clothing insulation required for a thermal environment evaluation was assessed. The proposed system can be efficiently used for taking care of energy poverty where the installation of conventional monitoring systems is restricted.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the most widely used tests in orthopedic areas. Gadolinium-based magnetic resonance (MR) contrast media are commonly used for MRI tests. They are known to be safe with little side effects and low incidence of acute adverse reactions. Although not common, immediate hypersensitivity reaction can occur in some patients after administration of gadolinium-based MR contrast media, causing skin rash, vascular edema, dyspnea, abdominal pain, hypotension, altered mental status, cardiopulmonary arrest, and even death. During a knee joint MRI test in a 5-year-old boy, anaphylaxis, a serious symptom, occured after injecting gadolinium-based MR contrast medium. Here we report this case along with a literature review. In the video compression industry, video compression tailored to machine vision tasks has recently emerged as a critical area of focus. Given the unique characteristics of machine vision, the current practice of directly employing conventional codecs reveals inefficiency, which requires compressing unnecessary regions. In this paper, we propose a framework that more aptly encodes video regions distinguished by machine vision to enhance coding efficiency. For that, the proposed framework consists of deep learning-based adaptive switch networks that guide the efficient coding tool for video encoding. Through the experiments, it is demonstrated that the proposed framework has superiority over the latest standardization project, video coding for machine benchmark, which achieves a Bjontegaard delta (BD)-rate gain of 5.91% on average and reaches up to a 19.51% BD-rate gain. This prospective bi-center study aimed to analyze the outcomes of primary total knee arthroplasty using the Stemmable Tibia Attune system. A total of 100 patients who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty with Stemmable Tibia from January 2019 to December 2021 were enrolled in the study. Radiological outcomes (hip-knee-ankle axis and medial proximal tibial angle) were assessed preoperatively and postoperatively. Clinical outcomes (visual analog scale score, Hospital for Special Surgery score, Knee Society function score, Knee Society knee score, flexion contracture, further flexion, and range of motion) were analyzed preoperatively and at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years postoperatively. Complications (periprosthetic joint infection and aseptic loosening) were examined. The hip-knee-ankle axis decreased (preoperative: 9.5° ± 6.3°, postoperative: 1.1° ± 2.7°), whereas the medial proximal tibial angle increased (preoperative: 84.6° ± 4.1°, postoperative: 89.8° ± 1.9°). The visual analog scale score, Hospital for Special Surgery score, Knee Society knee score, and Knee Society function score increased postoperatively. The Knee Society knee score indicated above good outcomes (100.0% and 99.0% at 1 and 2 years postoperatively, respectively). The Knee Society function score also showed above good results (98.0% and 93.0% at 1 and 2 years postoperatively, respectively). The range of motion significantly improved (p < 0.001): flexion contracture decreased from 9.10° ± 7.23° to 2.15° ± 2.87°, whereas further flexion increased from 136.05° ± 14.78° to 139.80° ± 10.02°. One patient developed periprosthetic joint infection; no early loosening was observed. In conclusion, Attune primary total knee arthroplasty with Stemmable Tibia not only is safe and effective but also leads to radiological and clinical improvements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies on somatic mutations in cloned animals have revealed slight genetic variances between clones and their originals, but have yet to identify the precise effects of these differences within the organism. Somatic mutations contribute to aging and are implicated in tumor development and other age-related diseases. Thus, we compared whole genome sequencing data from an original dog with that of cloned dogs, identifying candidate somatic mutations that were disproportionately located within genes previously implicated in aging. The substitutional signature of cloning-specific somatic mutations mirrored the uniform distribution characteristic of the signature associated with human aging. Further analysis of genes revealed significant enrichment of traits associated with body size as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal function and tumorigenesis. Overall, the somatic mutations found in cloned dogs may indicate a conserved mechanism driving aging across species and a broad spectrum of pathway alterations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we fabricated sub‐micron organic/inorganic hybrid TFE (Thin Film Encapsulation). We utilize an inkjet printing process to fabricate organic layer. It has excellent industrial applicability by using an industrial printhead with 1024 nozzles. The thickness of the organic layer is optimized through the DPI (Drops Per Inch) of inkjet printing and surface treatment of substrate. The sub‐micron organic/inorganic hybrid TFE was fabricated on a TEOLED (Top Emission Organic Light Emitting Diode), and the OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) with the fabricated TFE did not show degradation. Under constant temperature and humidity conditions 30°C, 90 % R.H. (Relative Humidity), the luminance of the OLED remained the same without any defects. The fabricated TFE for the production of OLEDoS has excellent encapsulation properties even at a thin thickness. Finally, we are investigating the optical properties of the ultra‐high‐resolution microdisplay panel applied with the sub‐micron organic/inorganic hybrid TFE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reducing the size of perovskite crystals to confine excitons and passivating surface defects has fueled a significant advance in the luminescence efficiency of perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, the persistent gap between the optical limit of electroluminescence efficiency and the photoluminescence efficiency of colloidal perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) suggests that defect passivation alone is not sufficient to achieve highly efficient colloidal PeNC-LEDs. Here, we present a materials approach to controlling the dynamic nature of the perovskite surface. Our experimental and theoretical studies reveal that conjugated molecular multipods (CMMs) adsorb onto the perovskite surface by multipodal hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions, strengthening the near-surface perovskite lattice and reducing ionic fluctuations which are related to nonradiative recombination. The CMM treatment strengthens the perovskite lattice and suppresses its dynamic disorder, resulting in a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield of PeNC films and a high external quantum efficiency (26.1%) of PeNC-LED with pure green emission that matches the Rec.2020 color standard for next-generation vivid displays.Kim et al. report a strategy to reduce the dynamic disorder of the perovskite lattice by using CMMs that adsorb on the surface of PeNCs via van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonding. Background: Oral ulcers are a common side effect of chemotherapy and affect patients' quality of life. While stem cell transplantation is a potential treatment for oral ulcers, its efficacy is limited as the stem cells tend to remain in the affected area for a short time. This study aims to develop a treatment for oral ulcers by using trimethyl chitosan (TMC) hydrogel with human tonsil-derived stem cells (hTMSCs) to increase the therapeutic effect of stem cells and investigate their effectiveness. Methods: Animals were divided into four experimental groups: Control, TMC hydrogel, hTMSCs, and hTMSCs loaded in TMC hydrogel (Hydrogel + hTMSCs) (each n = 8). Oral ulcers were chemically induced by anesthetizing the rats followed by injection of dilute acetic acid in the right buccal mucosa. After confirming the presence of oral ulcers in the animals, a single subcutaneous injection of 100 µL of each treatment was applied to the ulcer area. Histological analyses were performed to measure inflammatory cells, oral mucosal thickness, and fibrosis levels. The expression level of inflammatory cytokines was also measured using RT-PCR to gauge therapeutic the effect. Results: The ulcer size was significantly reduced in the TMC hydrogel + hTMSCs group compared to the control group. The stem cells in the tissue were only observed until Day 3 in the hTMSCs treated group, while the injected stem cells in the TMC Hydrogel + hTMSCs group were still present until day 7. Cytokine analysis related to the inflammatory response in the tissue confirmed that the TMC Hydrogel + hTMSCs treated group demonstrated superior wound healing compared to other experimental groups. Conclusion: This study has shown that the adhesion and viability of current stem cell therapies can be resolved by utilizing a hydrogel prepared with TMC and combining it with hTMSCs. The combined treatment can promote rapid healing of oral cavity wounds by enhancing anti-inflammatory effects and expediting wound healing. Therefore, hTMSC loaded in TMC hydrogel was the most effective wound-healing approach among all four treatment groups prolonging stem cell survival. However, further research is necessary to minimize the initial inflammatory response of biomaterials and assess the safety and long-term effects for potential clinical applications. To achieve superior device performance such as low threshold voltage Vth, high maximum on‐current Ion,max, and long retention time in electrolyte‐gated organic synaptic transistors, efficient electrochemical doping and high state retention are essential. However, these characteristics generally show a trade‐off relationship. This work introduces an effective strategy to increase retention time while promoting efficient electrochemical doping. The approach involves blending two polymer semiconductors (PSCs) that have the same backbone but different types of side chains. Polymer synaptic transistors (PSTs) with the blend film showed the lowest Vth, highest Ion,max, longest retention time, and superior cyclic stability compared to PSTs that used films containing only one of the PSCs. The improvement in electrical and synaptic properties achieved through the blend strategy is consistently reproducible and comprehensive. It is attributed this improvement to the increased redox activity and constrained morphological changes observed in the blended PSCs during electrochemical doping, as confirmed by several electrochemical characterizations. This work is the first to increase retention time in PSTs without increasing the crystallinity of polymer film or sacrificing the electrochemical doping efficiency, which has been regarded as an unavoidable compromise in this field.
