Aim: To compare romantic and sexual relationships between adults born very preterm (VP; <32 weeks of gestation) or with very low birth weight (VLBW; <1500 g) and at term, and to evaluate potential biological and environmental explanatory factors among VP/VLBW participants., Methods: This individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis included longitudinal studies assessing romantic and sexual relationships in adults (mean sample age ≥ 18 years) born VP/VLBW compared with term-born controls. Following PRISMA-IPD guidelines, 11 of the 13 identified cohorts provided IPD from 1606 VP/VLBW adults and 1659 term-born controls. IPD meta-analyses were performed using one-stage approach., Results: Individuals born VP/VLBW were less likely to be in a romantic relationship (OR 0.49; 95% CI 0.31-0.76), to be married/cohabiting (OR 0.70, 95% CI 0.53-0.92), or to have had sexual intercourse (OR 0.21, 95% CI 0.09-0.36) than term-born adults. If sexually active, VP/VLBW participants were more likely to experience their first sexual intercourse after the age of 18 years (OR 1.93, 95% CI 1.24-3.01) than term-born adults. Among VP/VLBW adults, males, and those with neurosensory impairment were least likely to experience romantic relationships., Conclusions: These findings reflect less optimal social functioning and may have implications for socioeconomic and health outcomes of adults born VP/VLBW., (© 2024 The Author(s). Introduction: Early induction of labor (37 +0 -38 +6 gestational weeks) in large-for-gestational-age infants may reduce perinatal risks such as shoulder dystocia, but it may also increase the long-term risks of reduced cognitive abilities. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the cognitive and academic outcomes of large-for-gestational-age children born early term versus full term (combined or independent exposures)., Material and Methods: The protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database under the registration no. CRD42024528626. Five databases were searched from their inception until March 27, 2024, without language restrictions. Studies reporting childhood cognitive or academic outcomes after early term or large-for-gestational-age births were included. Two reviewers independently screened the selected studies. One reviewer extracted the data, and the other double-checked the data. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. In addition to narrative synthesis, meta-analyses were conducted where possible., Results: Of the 2505 identified articles, no study investigated early-term delivery in large-for-gestational-age babies. Seventy-six studies involving 11 460 016 children investigated the effects of either early-term delivery or large-for-gestational-age. Children born at 37 weeks of gestation (standard mean difference, -0.13; 95% confidence interval, -0.21 to -0.05), but not at 38 weeks (standard mean difference, -0.04; 95% confidence interval, -0.08 to 0.002), had lower cognitive scores than those born at 40 weeks. Large-for-gestational-age children had slightly higher cognitive scores than appropriate-for-gestational-age children (standard mean difference, 0.06; 95% confidence interval, 0.01-0.11). Similar results were obtained using the outcomes of either cognitive impairment or academic performance., Conclusions: No study has investigated the combined effect of early-term delivery on cognitive scores in large-for-gestational-age babies. Early-term delivery may have a very small detrimental effect on cognitive scores, whereas being large for gestational age may have a very small benefit. Background: Very preterm and/or very low birthweight (VP/VLBW; <32 weeks' gestation and/or <1500 g birthweight) individuals rated their partner and peer relationships lower than term-born individuals in emerging adulthood, but their quality of relationships with parents has been rarely investigated. Moreover, it is unclear whether previously reported differences in social relationship characteristics persist or lessen from emerging to established adulthood., Objectives: To investigate changes in social relationship characteristics in VP/VLBW adults compared to term-born adults from 26 to 34 years and whether the association between VP/VLBW and social relationship characteristics varies according to sex., Methods: In this prospective whole-population birth cohort study in South Bavaria, Germany, social relationship characteristics with parents, partners and peers, and overall social relationships across these domains were evaluated with a Life Course Interview at 26 and 34 years. Interview items related to these domains were extracted and scored as 0 (optimal) and 1 (non-optimal). Each score was summed into domain-specific composite scores and standardised according to the total sample., Results: Participants included 262 VP/VLBW (52.7% males) and 230 term-born individuals (47.0% males). VP/VLBW adults had lower overall social relationship scores than term-born adults (β = -.61, 95% CI -0.85, -0.37). Specifically, partner (β = -.50, 95% CI-0.74, -0.27) and peer relationship scores (β = -.55, 95% CI-0.78, -0.32) were lower than those of term-born adults, but scores did not differ for parent relationships. On average, partner (β = .25, 95% CI 0.14, 0.35) and peer relationship scores increased (β = .16, 95% CI 0.03, 0.29), while parent relationship scores decreased (β = -.64, 95% CI-0.79, -0.49) from 26 to 34 years. These changes were similar for VP/VLBW and term-born individuals., Conclusions: Patterns of change for the improved partner and peer but worsening parental social relationship scores were common across VP/VLBW and term-born adults, but differences between the two groups persisted from 26 to 34 years., (© 2024 The Author(s). Despite substantial neuroscience research in the last decade revealing the claustrum's prominent role in mammalian forebrain organization, as evidenced by its extraordinarily widespread connectivity pattern, claustrum studies in humans are rare. This is particularly true for studies focusing on claustrum connections. Two primary reasons may account for this situation: First, the intricate anatomy of the human claustrum located between the external and extreme capsule hinders straightforward and reliable structural delineation. In addition, the few studies that used diffusion-weighted-imaging (DWI)-based tractography could not clarify whether in vivo tractography consistently and reliably identifies claustrum connections in humans across different subjects, cohorts, imaging methods, and connectivity metrics. To address these issues, we combined a recently developed deep-learning-based claustrum segmentation tool with DWI-based tractography in two large adult cohorts: 81 healthy young adults from the human connectome project and 81 further healthy young participants from the Bavarian longitudinal study. Tracts between the claustrum and 13 cortical and 9 subcortical regions were reconstructed in each subject using probabilistic tractography. Probabilistic group average maps and different connectivity metrics were generated to assess the claustrum's connectivity profile as well as consistency and replicability of tractography. We found, across individuals, cohorts, DWI-protocols, and measures, consistent and replicable cortical and subcortical ipsi- and contralateral claustrum connections. This result demonstrates robust in vivo tractography of claustrum connections in humans, providing a base for further examinations of claustrum connectivity in health and disease., (© 2024 The Author(s). This study examined whether maternal warmth in early childhood moderates the association between preterm birth and problems in peer relationships and low engagement in romantic relationships in adolescence. We studied 9193 individuals from the Millennium Cohort Study in the United Kingdom, 99 (1.1%) of whom were born very preterm (VPT; < 32 weeks of gestation) and 629 (6.8%) moderate-to-late preterm (MLPT; 32-36 weeks gestation). Maternal warmth was reported by the mothers when their children were 3 years old. Peer relationship problems were reported by both the participants and their mothers at 14 and 17 years. Further, participants reported their engagement in romantic relationships at 14 and 17 years. All outcome variables were z-standardized, and the moderation effect was examined via hierarchical linear regressions. Compared to full-term birth, both MLPT and VPT birth were associated with lower engagement in romantic relationships at 17 years of age (b = .04, p = .02; b = .11, p = .02, respectively), and VPT birth was associated with increased peer relationship problems at 14 (b = .29, p = .01) and 17 years of age (b = .22, p = .046). Maternal warmth in early childhood was similarly associated with lower peer relationship problems in MLPT, VPT and full-term born adolescents. However, there was no influence of maternal warmth on engagement in romantic relationships at 17 years of age. Bed-sharing is a controversial but common parenting practice with claimed benefits for emotional and behavioral development. Using data from the UK Millennium Cohort Study ( N  = 16,599), this prospective study investigated whether bed-sharing at 9 months is associated with childhood internalizing and externalizing symptom trajectories. Children were grouped by their patterns of co-developing internalizing and externalizing symptoms from 3 to 11 years of age using a parallel process latent class growth analysis. There were no associations between bed-sharing at 9 months of age and internalizing and externalizing symptom trajectories across childhood. This finding suggests that bed-sharing at 9 months has no positive or negative influence on the development of internalizing and externalizing symptoms across childhood. Clinicians should inform parents that bed-sharing during the second half of the first year is unlikely to have an impact on the later emotional and behavioral development of the children.

Objective: This study aimed to identify the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in 2 population-based cohorts of children born extremely preterm (EP) 11 years apart to ascertain whether psychiatric outcomes have changed over time following improved survival of EP children., Method: In the EPICure2 study, 200 children born EP (22-26 weeks' gestation) in England in 2006 were assessed at 11 years of age alongside 143 term-born children. Children were assessed using the Developmental and Wellbeing Assessment (DAWBA). DSM-IV diagnoses were assigned by clinical psychiatrists for 145 EP and 98 term-born children. Outcomes were compared between a subsample of children from the EPICure2 cohort (2006, n = 76) and the earlier-born EPICure (1995, n = 161) cohort born at 22 to 25 weeks' gestation in England., Results: EP children in EPICure2 were significantly more likely than term-born children to have any psychiatric disorder (39.3% vs 3.1%; adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 15.1, 95% CI = 4.4-51.1), emotional disorders (14.6% vs 2.0%; OR = 7.3, 95% CI = 1.6-32.7), conduct disorders (6.3% vs 0.0%, p = .01), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, 21.9% vs 2.6%; OR = 7.2; 95% CI = 1.5-33.6), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD, 18.9%; vs 0.0%, p < .001). There was no significant difference in the rates of any psychiatric disorder between EP children in the EPICure2 and EPICure cohorts., Conclusion: EP children remain at increased risk for psychiatric disorders at 11 years of age compared with term-born peers. Increased survival has not translated into improved psychiatric outcomes. Background: Preterm birth (before 37 completed weeks of gestation) is associated with an increased risk of adverse health and developmental outcomes relative to birth at term. Existing guidelines for data collection in cohort studies of individuals born preterm are either limited in scope, have not been developed using formal consensus methodology, or did not involve a range of stakeholders in their development. Recommendations meeting these criteria would facilitate data pooling and harmonisation across studies., Objectives: To develop a Core Dataset for use in longitudinal cohort studies of individuals born preterm., Methods: This work was carried out as part of the RECAP Preterm project. A systematic review of variables included in existing core outcome sets was combined with a scoping exercise conducted with experts on preterm birth. The results were used to generate a draft core dataset. A modified Delphi process was implemented using two stages with three rounds each. Three stakeholder groups participated: RECAP Preterm project partners; external experts in the field; people with lived experience of preterm birth. The Delphi used a 9-point Likert scale. Higher values indicated greater importance for inclusion. Participants also suggested additional variables they considered important for inclusion which were voted on in later rounds., Results: An initial list of 140 data items was generated. Ninety-six participants across 22 countries participated in the Delphi, of which 29% were individuals with lived experience of preterm birth. Consensus was reached on 160 data items covering Antenatal and Birth Information, Neonatal Care, Mortality, Administrative Information, Organisational Level Information, Socio-economic and Demographic information, Physical Health, Education and Learning, Neurodevelopmental Outcomes, Social, Lifestyle and Leisure, Healthcare Utilisation and Quality of Life., Conclusions: This core dataset includes 160 data items covering antenatal care through outcomes in adulthood. Purpose: Experiences of young people transitioning from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) have mostly been investigated qualitatively. This study adapts and validates the On Your Own Feet - Transition Experiences Scale (OYOF-TES) in a sample of CAMHS users in Europe and describes young people's and parents' experiences with transition and end of care at CAMHS., Methods: The OYOF-TES was adapted to a mental health setting and translated. An End Of Care (OYOF-EOC) version (self- and parent-report) was developed. A total of 457 young people and 383 parents completed an OYOF-TES or OYOF-EOC. Psychometric properties and descriptives are presented., Results: The Cronbach's alphas of the OYOF-TES and OYOF-EOC parent/self-report ranged from 0.92 to 0.94. The two-factor structure was confirmed. The mean overall satisfaction reported by young people was 6.15 (0-10; SD=2.92) for transition and 7.14 (0-10; SD=2.37) for care ending. However, 26.7%-36.4% of young people were unsatisfied., Discussion: The OYOF-TES and OYOF-EOC can be used reliably in mental healthcare settings to capture young people's and parents' transition experiences. Lasting thalamus volume reduction after preterm birth is a prominent finding. However, whether thalamic nuclei volumes are affected differentially by preterm birth and whether nuclei aberrations are relevant for cognitive functioning remains unknown. Using T1-weighted MR-images of 83 adults born very preterm (≤ 32 weeks' gestation; VP) and/or with very low body weight (≤ 1,500 g; VLBW) as well as of 92 full-term born (≥ 37 weeks' gestation) controls, we compared thalamic nuclei volumes of six subregions (anterior, lateral, ventral, intralaminar, medial, and pulvinar) across groups at the age of 26 years. To characterize the functional relevance of volume aberrations, cognitive performance was assessed by full-scale intelligence quotient using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale and linked to volume reductions using multiple linear regression analyses. Thalamic volumes were significantly lower across all examined nuclei in VP/VLBW adults compared to controls, suggesting an overall rather than focal impairment. Lower nuclei volumes were linked to higher intensity of neonatal treatment, indicating vulnerability to stress exposure after birth. Furthermore, we found that single results for lateral, medial, and pulvinar nuclei volumes were associated with full-scale intelligence quotient in preterm adults, albeit not surviving correction for multiple hypotheses testing. These findings provide evidence that lower thalamic volume in preterm adults is observable across all subregions rather than focused on single nuclei. Background and Hypothesis: Young people (YP) with psychotic experiences (PE) have an increased risk of developing a psychiatric disorder. Therefore, knowledge on continuity of care from child and adolescent (CAMHS) to adult mental health services (AMHS) in relation to PE is important. Here, we investigated whether the self-reported trajectories of persistent PE were associated with likelihood of transition to AMHS and mental health outcomes., Study Design: In this prospective cohort study, interviews and questionnaires were used to assess PE, mental health, and service use in 763 child and adolescent mental health service users reaching their service's upper age limit in 8 European countries. Trajectories of self-reported PE (3 items) from baseline to 24-month follow-up were determined using growth mixture modeling (GMM). Associations were assessed with auxiliary variables and using mixed models. Study results. At baseline, 56.7% of YP reported PE. GMM identified 5 trajectories over 24 months: medium increasing (5.2%), medium stable (11.7%), medium decreasing (6.5%), high decreasing (4.2%), and low stable (72.4%). PE trajectories were not associated with continuity of specialist care or transition to AMHS. Overall, YP with PE reported more mental health problems at baseline. Persistence of PE or an increase was associated with poorer outcomes at follow-up., Conclusions: PE are common among CAMHS users when reaching the upper age limit of CAMHS. Persistence or an increase of PE was associated with poorer mental health outcomes, poorer prognosis, and impaired functioning, but were less discriminative for continuity of care., (© The Author(s) 2024. Preterm born individuals have an increased risk for mental health problems. Participation in club sport is associated with better mental health but the causal direction is unclear. It is not known whether this association could also be found in preterm children. Data from term born (N = 10,368), late preterm (N = 630), and very to moderately preterm born (N = 243) children from the Millennium Cohort Study at the ages of 3, 5, 7, 11, and 14 years were used. Longitudinal associations between the parent-reported Strengths and Difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) and club sport participation (days per week) were analysed using multigroup structural equation modelling, adjusting for gender, maternal depression, parental education; motor problems and attrition were controlled for. Multi-group structural equation modelling showed that children with more peer relationship problems, emotional symptoms, conduct problems or hyperactivity-inattention were less likely to participate in club sport at subsequent assessment time points. More days with club sport participation was associated with lower levels of emotional symptoms and peer relationship problems but not conduct problems or hyperactivity-inattention at subsequent ages. Results were similar in all gestational age groups. Club sport participation predicts lower levels of peer relationship and emotional problems in subsequent waves while it is also predicted by lower levels of emotional problems, peer relationship problems, conduct problems and hyperactivity-inattention in preceding waves. Since no differences in the relationship between SDQ subscales and club sport participation were seen with regard to gestational age groups, club sport should be encouraged in all children., (© 2024. Background: Early regulatory problems (RPs), i.e., problems with crying, sleeping, and/or feeding during the first years, increase the risk for avoidant personality traits in adulthood, associated with social withdrawal and anxiety. Even more, RPs are linked with functional alterations in the adult default mode and salience networks, comprising the brain's allostatic-interoceptive system (AIS) and playing a role in social interactions. We investigated whether RPs assessed in infancy are associated with difficulties in adult peer relationships mediated by functional alterations of the AIS., Methods: As part of a large case-controlled prospective study, 42 adults with previous RPs and 70 matched controls (mean age = 28.48, SD = 2.65, 51% male) underwent fMRI during rest. The analysis focused on the intrinsic functional connectivity (iFC) of key nodes of the AIS. Peer relationship quality was assessed via a semi-structured Life Course Interview and the YASR scale. In these same individuals, RPs were assessed at ages 5, 20 and 56 months., Results: RPs in infancy were associated with lower-quality peer relationships and enhanced functional connectivity of the AIS nodes in adulthood, with a stronger effect for multiple and persistent RPs compared with transient-multiple or single-persistent RPs. Importantly, iFC changes of the dorsal mid insula, a primary interoceptive cortex with frontal and temporal regions, mediated the relationship between early RPs and adult peer relationship quality., Conclusions: Results indicate long-lasting social and neural changes associated with early RPs. Introduction: We investigated whether gender-typed traits (masculinity and femininity) contemporaneously predicted self-reported peer victimization, peer-reported peer victimization, and sibling victimization. We also tested the moderating role of sex and popularity., Methods: A sample of 2782 British pupils aged 11-16 from Central England, UK was screened for bullying involvement and popularity using self-report and peer nominations, and a subsample of 704 (52.7% girls) completed a measure of gender-typed traits (masculinity and femininity)., Results: Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that low levels of masculine traits were associated with greater risk of self-reported peer victimization, there were no associations with peer-reported peer victimization, and low levels of feminine traits were associated with greater risk of self-reported sibling victimization. The effects were not moderated by sex, while popularity decreased the risk of self- and peer-reported peer victimization., Conclusions: Bullying prevention interventions could benefit from including the positive facets of feminine and masculine traits., (© 2024 The Authors. Background: Children born extremely preterm (EP) are at increased risk of neurocognitive and behavioural morbidity. Here, we investigate whether behavioural outcomes have changed over time concomitant with increasing survival following EP birth., Methods: Comparison of outcomes at 11 years of age for two prospective national cohorts of children born EP in 1995 (EPICure) and 2006 (EPICure2), assessed alongside term-born children. Behavioural outcomes were assessed using the parent-completed Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), DuPaul Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Rating Scale (ADHD-RS), and Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ)., Results: In EPICure, 176 EP and 153 term-born children were assessed (mean age: 10.9 years); in EPICure2, 112 EP and 143 term-born children were assessed (mean age: 11.8 years). In both cohorts, EP children had higher mean scores and more clinically significant difficulties than term-born children on almost all measures. Comparing outcomes for EP children in the two cohorts, there were no significant differences in mean scores or in the proportion of children with clinically significant difficulties after adjustment for confounders. Using term-born children as reference, EP children in EPICure2 had significantly higher SDQ total difficulties and ADHD-RS hyperactivity impulsivity z-scores than EP children in EPICure., Conclusions: Behavioural outcomes have not improved for EP children born in 2006 compared with those born in 1995. Relative to term-born peers, EP children born in 2006 had worse outcomes than those born in 1995. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex mental health condition often associated with previous childhood adversity including maladaptive parenting. When becoming a parent themselves, mothers with BPD have difficulties with various parenting cognitions and practices, but unknown is whether they have appropriate knowledge of sensitive parenting. This study explored whether differences in parenting knowledge or self-efficacy are specific to BPD or also found in mothers with depression, and whether symptom severity or specific diagnosis better explain parenting perceptions. Mothers with BPD ( n = 26), depression ( n = 25) or HCs ( n = 25) completed a Q-sort parenting knowledge task and a parenting self-efficacy questionnaire. Results showed mothers with BPD had the same knowledge of sensitive parenting behaviors as mothers with depression and healthy mothers. Self-reported parenting self-efficacy was lower in mothers with BPD and depression compared with healthy mothers, with symptom severity most strongly associated. A significant but low correlation was found between parenting self-efficacy and knowledge. Findings suggest that mothers with BPD and depression know what good parenting is but think they are not parenting well. Mental health difficulties are not associated with parenting knowledge, but symptom severity appears to be a common pathway to lower parenting self-efficacy. Future interventions should test whether reduction of symptom severity or positive parenting feedback could improve parenting self-efficacy.

Previous research has associated sleep with subjective well-being (SWB), but less is known about the underlying within-person processes. In the current study, we investigated how self-reported and actigraphy-measured sleep parameters (sleep onset latency, sleep duration, sleep satisfaction, social jetlag, and sleep efficiency) influence SWB (positive affect [PA], negative affect [NA], and life satisfaction [LS]) at the within- and between-person levels. Multilevel analyses of data from 109 university students who completed a 2-week experience sampling study revealed that higher within-person sleep satisfaction was a significant predictor of all three components of next day's SWB ( p s < .005). Higher between-person sleep satisfaction was also related to higher levels of PA and LS ( p s < .005), whereas shorter self-reported between-person sleep onset latency was associated with higher PA and LS, and lower NA ( p s < .05). However, longer actigraphy-measured within-person sleep onset latency was associated with higher next day's LS ( p = .028). When including within- and between-person sleep parameters into the same models predicting SWB, only within- and between-person sleep satisfaction remained a significant predictor of all components of SWB. Additionally, we found an effect of higher self-reported within-person sleep onset latency on PA and of shorter self-reported within-person sleep duration on LS ( p s < .05). Our results indicate that the evaluative component of sleep-sleep satisfaction-is most consistently linked with SWB. Thus, sleep interventions that are successful in not only altering sleep patterns but also enhancing sleep satisfaction may stand a better chance at improving students' SWB. Background: Early childhood multiple or persistent regulatory problems (RPs; crying, sleeping, or feeding problems) have been associated with a risk of behavioural problems in young adulthood. It has been suggested that this may be due to the possible influence of early RPs on the functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. However, associations between early RPs and HPA-axis activity in young adulthood remain unexplored. Thus, the aim of the current study was to investigate whether early childhood multiple or persistent RPs are associated with diurnal salivary cortisol in young adulthood., Methods: At the ages of 5, 20 and 56 months, RPs of 308 children from the Arvo Ylppö Longitudinal Study were assessed via standardized parental interviews and neurological assessments. Multiple RPs were defined as two or three RPs at the age of 5 months and persistent RPs as at least one RP at 5, 20 and 56 months. At the mean age of 25.4 years (SD= 0.6), the participants donated saliva samples for cortisol at awakening, 15 and 30 min thereafter, 10:30 am, at noon, 5:30 pm, and at bedtime during one day. We used mixed model regressions, and generalized linear models for testing the associations, controlling for important covariates., Results: Of the 308 children, 61 (19.8%) had multiple or persistent RPs in early childhood: 38 had multiple, and 27 had persistent RPs. Persistent RPs were associated with significantly higher cortisol peak and output in the waking period, and cortisol awakening response. On the other hand, multiple RPs were not associated with salivary cortisol., Conclusion: Children displaying persistent RPs throughout early childhood show, over two decades later, increased HPA axis activity in response to awakening stress. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is among the most common mental disorders in children and adolescents. While most studies in this field have focused on the genetic and neurobiological underpinnings of the disorder, research focusing on the family environment as a critical context contributing toward the manifestation and maintenance of child ADHD symptoms is still less extensive. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine longitudinal and bidirectional associations between child hyperactivity, mother-child negativity, and sibling dyad negativity. Data were analyzed of up to 4,429 children from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a nationally representative prospective birth cohort study in the United Kingdom, at three time points (T1-T3, children aged 4, 7, and 8 years). At baseline (T1, n = 4,063), the child sample (98.8% White ethnic background) composed of 51.6% males. Child hyperactivity symptoms, mother-child negativity, and sibling dyad negativity were examined based on maternal reports. The random intercepts cross-lagged panel model was adopted to parcel out between-family differences from within-family fluctuations and test bidirectional associations. On the between-family level, families with higher child hyperactivity reported higher mother-child and sibling dyad negativity. On the within-family level, unidirectional spillover processes between sibling dyad negativity and mother-child negativity as well as between mother-child negativity and child hyperactivity emerged. Future work in the area of child hyperactivity should implement a transactional family systems approach incorporating both parent-child and sibling subsystems. Interventions to reduce negative interactions between parents and hyperactive children may offer promising improvements in child symptoms and thus alleviate family burden. The aim of the current study was to examine whether self-control skills in childhood moderate the association between very preterm birth (<32 weeks of gestational age) and emotional problems and peer victimization in adolescence. We used data from four prospective cohort studies, which included 29,378 participants in total ( N = 645 very preterm; N = 28,733 full-term). Self-control was mother-reported in childhood at 5-11 years whereas emotional problems and peer victimization were both self- and mother-reported at 12-17 years of age. Findings of individual participant data meta-analysis showed that self-control skills in childhood do not moderate the association between very preterm birth and adolescence emotional problems and peer victimization. It was shown that higher self-control skills in childhood predict lower emotional problems and peer victimization in adolescence similarly in very preterm and full-term borns.

Background: Sexual victimisation and peer victimisation are pervasive and increase risk for mental illness. Longitudinal studies that compare their unique and cumulative effects are scarce and have been done predominantly in high-income countries. The aims of this study were to examine the prevalence, prospective associations, and gender differences in sexual and peer victimisation and mental health in a low-income, African setting., Methods: In this prospective cohort study, data were obtained from the 2017 ARISE Adolescent Health Study, a population-representative, two-wave, prospective study of adolescents (aged 12-20 years) from Burkina Faso. A random sample of adolescents was drawn from ten villages, selected to capture the five main ethnic groups, and from one of the seven sectors of Nouna town, Burkina Faso, at two timepoints: Nov 12 to Dec 27, 2017, and Nov 15 to Dec 20, 2018. Standardised interviews were conducted in French or a local language by trained researchers. We measured victimisation exposure as sexual victimisation, peer victimisation, and polyvictimisation, using lifetime frequency of exposure, and we measured mental health symptoms and disorders using the Kutcher Adolescent Depression Scale, the Primary Care Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder screen IV and 5, and a question on lifetime self-harm and number of incidents in the past year. We calculated prevalence of victimisation and mental health symptoms and disorders at the two timepoints, and we used lifetime victimisation at the first timepoint to predict mental health at the second timepoint using logistic and negative binomial regressions. Gender differences were examined using interaction terms., Findings: Of 2544 eligible adolescents, 1644 participated at time 1 and 1291 participated at time 2. The final sample with data at both timepoints included 1160 adolescents aged 12-20 years (mean 15·1, SE 0·2), of whom 469 (40·4%) were girls and 691 (59·6%) were boys. The majority ethnic group was Dafin (626 [39·1%]), followed by Bwaba (327 [20·5%]), Mossi (289 [16·0%]), Samo (206 [13·0%]), Peulh (166 [9·7%]), and other (30 [1·6%]). After survey weight adjustment, sexual victimisation (weighted percentages, time 1, 256 [13·8%] of 1620; time 2, 93 [7·2%] of 1264) and peer victimisation (weighted percentages, time 1, 453 [29·9%] of 1620; time 2, 272 [21·9%] of 1264) were common, whereas polyvictimisation was more rare (weighted percentages, time 1, 116 [6·6%] of 1620; time 2, 76 [5·7%] of 1264). Longitudinally, sexual victimisation was associated with probable clinical disorder (adjusted odds ratio 2·59, 95% CI 1·15-5·84), depressive symptoms (adjusted incidence rate ratio [aIRR] 1·39, 95% CI 1·12-1·72), and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (aIRR 2·34, 1·31-4·16). Peer victimisation was associated with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (aIRR 1·89, 1·13-3·17) and polyvictimisation was associated with depressive symptoms (aIRR 1·34, 1·01-1·77). Girls reported more sexual victimisation (weighted percentages, 130 [17·3%] of 681 vs 126 [11·4%] of 939), boys reported more peer victimisation (weighted percentages, 290 [33·1%] of 939 vs 163 [25·2%] of 681), and there was a significant interaction between lifetime victimisation and gender for probable clinical disorder (F [degrees of freedom 7, sample 376] 2·16; p=0·030)., Interpretation: Sexual and peer victimisation were common in the study setting and increased risk for mental health problems. Adolescent girls who have been sexually victimised are especially at risk of mental health problems. Aim: Adults born preterm have increased risk of mental health problems and other neurodevelopmental conditions. We aimed to investigate associations of mental health with pain and tiredness in adults born very preterm (VP; <32 weeks) or very low birthweight (VLBW; <1500 g) and at term, and whether these associations are influenced by physical activity., Methods: As part of an EU Horizon 2020 project, individual participant data from six prospective cohort studies were harmonised for 617 VP/VLBW and 1122 term-born participants. Mental health was assessed by the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment Adult Self-Report. Pain and tiredness were harmonised based on specific items from self-reported questionnaires. Associations between mental health and pain or tiredness were explored by linear regression., Results: An increase in the mental health scales internalising, externalising and total problems was associated with increased pain and tiredness in the preterm and term group alike. Results were maintained when adjusting for physical activity., Conclusion: The findings indicate that associations between mental health, pain and tiredness in adults are independent of gestation or birthweight. Objectives: To test whether preschool academic skills were associated with educational attainment in adolescence and whether associations differed between individuals born preterm and at full term., Study Design: This prospective cohort study comprised 6924 individuals, including n = 444 (6.4%) adolescents born preterm (<37 weeks of gestation) from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Preschool academic (mathematics and literacy) skills were rated by teachers at 4-5 years. Educational attainment at 16 years was informed by attaining a General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) in key subjects mathematics and English. Logistic regressions assessed the association between preterm birth, preschool mathematics, and GCSE Mathematics and between preterm birth, preschool literacy, and GCSE English., Results: Similar numbers of adolescents born preterm and at term achieved a GCSE in mathematics and English (53.6 % vs 57.4% and 59.5% vs 63.9%, respectively; P values > .05). Higher preschool academic skill scores in mathematics were associated with greater odds of attaining GCSE Mathematics and preschool literacy skills were associated with GCSE English. Adolescents born preterm with higher preschool mathematics (OR: 1.51, CI: 1.14, 2.00) and literacy skills (OR: 1.57, CI: 1.10, 2.25) were more likely to attain GCSEs in the respective subject than their term-born counterparts with equal levels of preschool skills., Conclusions: Preschool academic skills in mathematics and literacy are associated with educational attainment of preterm and term-born individuals in adolescence.
