Neurodegeneration is becoming one of the leading causes of death worldwide as the population expands and grows older. There is a growing desire to understand the mechanisms behind prion proteins as well as the prion-like proteins that make up neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). Both amyloid-β (Aβ) and hyperphosphorylated tau (p-tau) proteins behave in ways similar to those of the infectious form of the prion protein, PrPSc, such as aggregating, seeding, and replicating under not yet fully understood mechanisms, thus the designation of prion-like. This review aims to highlight the shared mechanisms between prion-like proteins and prion proteins in the structural variations associated with aggregation and disease development. These mechanisms largely focus on the dysregulation of protein homeostasis, self-replication, and protein aggregation, and this knowledge could contribute to diagnoses and treatments for the given NDs.

Traditional methods for algae removal in drinking water treatment, such as coagulation and sedimentation, face challenges due to the negative charge on algae cells’ surfaces, resulting in ineffective removal. Ultrasonic cavitation has shown promise in enhancing coagulation performance by disrupting extracellular polymer structures and improving cyanobacteria removal through various mechanisms like shear force and free radical reactions. However, the short lifespan and limited mass transfer distance of free radicals in conventional ultrasonic treatment lead to high energy consumption, limiting widespread application. To overcome these limitations and enhance energy efficiency, advanced carbon-based materials were developed and tested. Nitrogen-doped functional groups on nanodiamond surfaces were found to boost sonosensitivity by increasing the production of reactive oxygen species at the sonosensitizer-water interface. Utilizing low-power ultrasound (0.12 W/mL) in combination with N-ND treatment for 5 min, removal rates of Microcystis aeruginosa cells in water exceeded 90 %, with enhanced removal of algal organic matters and microcystins in water. Visualization through confocal microscopy highlighted the role of positively charged nitrogen-doped nanodiamonds in aggregating algae cells. The synergy between cell capturing and catalysis of N-ND indicates that efficient mass transfer of free radicals from the sonosensitizer’s surface to the microalgae’s surface is critical for promoting cyanobacteria floc formation. This study underscores the potential of employing a low-intensity ultrasound and N-ND system in effectively improving algae removal in water treatment processes.

Powder bed fusion (PBF), along with subsequent heat treatment, plays a crucial role in enhancing the impact toughness of FeCoNiCrMo0.2 high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and expanding their potential applications in field for high-speed deformation. In this study, the dynamic-mechanical properties and microstructure of the as-built PBF–FeCoNiCrMo0.2 HEAs and quenched PBF–FeCoNiCrMo0.2 HEAs heated at 600–750 °C for 8 h were investigated. As the heating temperature increases, the columnar grains and cellular structures undergo coarsening and the dislocation density gradually decreases. Moreover, higher heating temperatures facilitate the precipitation of Mo-rich second phases. This occurrence can be primarily attributed to the segregation of Mo at the boundaries of the as-built specimens. Consequently, in the quenched specimens, the μ phases are predominantly distributed along the boundaries of the cellular structures. In the quenched Q700 specimen (heated at 700 °C for 8h), the size and volume fraction of the μ phases are measured to be 63.4 nm and 3.59%, respectively. Additionally, under the same condition, the Q700 specimens also exhibited a relatively slight increase in the size of the cellular structures. The impact energy absorption, dynamic yield strength, and dynamic compressive strength of the Q700 quenched specimens were found to be 210.1 MJ/m3, 1066 MPa, and 1649 MPa at a strain rate of 1840 s−1. These values represent a dramatic improvement of 38.1%, 52.7%, and 14.7% higher in comparison to those of the as-built specimens. Under impact deformation, the presence of the μ phases plays a significant role in impeding the movement of dislocations by acting as a pinning agent for the boundaries of the cellular structures, thereby enhancing the strength. Simultaneously, the cellular structures were significantly elongated to form the deformation bands and to coordinate the impact deformation, leading to good impact energy absorption. In combination, the synergistic strengthening and toughening effect of the μ phases and the elongated cellular structures contribute to a remarkable improvement in the impact toughness of the PBF-HEAs.

BackgroundAtherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), a leading cause of global fatalities, has inconsistent findings regarding the impact of muscle symptoms despite promising clinical trials involving PCSK9 inhibitors (PCSK9i) and siRNA as potential therapeutic options.MethodsThe databases EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, and ClinicalTrials.gov were thoroughly searched without any restrictions on language. Review Manager 5.3 software was utilized to calculate relative risks with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for dichotomous data and mean differences or standardized mean differences with 95%CIs for continuous data. To evaluate publication bias, Egger's test was employed using Stata/SE software.ResultsThis analysis included 26 studies comprising 28 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving a total of 100,193 patients, and 4 different lipid-lowering therapy combinations. For events with creatine kinase >3ULN, evolocumab and alirocumab demonstrated significant advantages compared to inclisiran. Evolocumab showed the best results in terms of both new muscle symptom events and creatine kinase >3ULN.ConclusionsBased on this network meta-analysis (NMA) results, evolocumab has emerged as a promising treatment option for patients with hyperlipidemia and muscle disorders compared to other PCSK9 inhibitors and inclisiran.Systematic Review RegistrationPROSPERO [CRD42023459558].

The p53, a pivotal tumor suppressor, regulates various cellular responses, including DNA repair and apoptosis. Normally, p53 levels are low due to murine double minute clone 2 (MDM2) mediated polyubiquitination. However, stress signals disrupt p53-MDM2 interaction, stabilizing p53 and activating target genes. Dysfunctional p53 is common in cancers, especially colorectal cancer (CRC), with TP53 mutations in 43% of tumors. These mutations impair wild-type p53 function or confer novel activities, promoting cancer progression. Despite drugs targeting p53 entering trials, understanding wild-type and mutant p53 functions is crucial for novel CRC therapies. P53 mutations not only impact DNA repair and apoptosis but also play a crucial role in tumor immunotherapy. While rendering tumors resistant to chemotherapy, p53 mutations provide opportunities for immunotherapy due to neoantigen-rich tumors. Additionally, p53 mutations influence tumor microenvironment cells, such as fibroblasts and immunosuppressive cells, through p53-mediated signaling pathways. Investigating p53 mutations in tumor therapy is vital for personalized medicine and immunotherapy. In cancer treatment research, scientists explore drugs and strategies to restore or enhance p53 function. Targeting wild-type p53 aims to restore DNA repair and cell cycle control, while targeting mutant p53 seeks new drugs to inhibit its detrimental effects, advancing tumor treatment. Understanding p53 drugs and strategies is crucial for cancer therapy progress.

Background. Ouabain, a Na+, K+-ATPase inhibitor, is elevated in hypertensive patients. Evidence suggests ouabain contributes to hypertension mainly through activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). Renal nerves play a vital role in the regulation of SNS activity, so we hypothesize that renal denervation may attenuate the development of ouabain-induced hypertension. Methods and Results. Forty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into following groups (n = 10 each): control group (sham surgery plus intraperitoneal saline injection), RDN group (renal denervation (RDN) plus intraperitoneal saline injection), ouabain group (sham surgery plus intraperitoneal ouabain injection), and ouabain + RDN group (RDN plus intraperitoneal ouabain injection). Non-coding RNAs, including microRNAs, long non-coding RNAs, and circular RNAs, have been identified as crucial regulators of various biological processes through epigenetic regulation, transcriptional regulation, and post-transcriptional regulation. Growing evidence suggests that dysregulation and activation of non-coding RNAs are closely associated with tumor angiogenesis, a process essential for tumor growth and metastasis and a major contributor to cancer-related mortality. Therefore, understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying tumor angiogenesis is of utmost importance. Numerous studies have documented the involvement of different types of non-coding RNAs in the regulation of angiogenesis. This review provides an overview of how non-coding RNAs regulate tumor angiogenesis. Additionally, we discuss emerging strategies that exploit non-coding RNAs for anti-angiogenic therapy in cancer treatment. Ultimately, this review underscores the crucial role played by non-coding RNAs in tumor angiogenesis and highlights their potential as therapeutic targets for anti-angiogenic interventions against cancer.

Knowledge of spring warm pool in the Bay of Bengal (BoBWP) is key for further understanding the climate variability in this region and beyond, but little is known about the BoBWP climatological state and the related mechanisms. In this study, we investigate the spatial structure and evolution of the BoBWP using daily Optimum Interpolation SST data from 1982-2022 in combination with multi-source data. Our analysis shows that the BoBWP is located in the central bay (6°-13°N) with a thickness around 20 m ~ 40 m. Composite analysis indicates that the BoBWP emerges in early April, peaks in early May and dissipates in early June. During the developing period, the net heat flux dominates the formation of spring warm pool through significant air-sea coupling processes, and induces the warming rate of 0.27°C/10d in the mixed layer, which is far larger than the contribution of oceanic dynamical processes (0.01°C/10d). During the decaying period, the net heat flux also plays a dominant role, with a cooling rate of -0.21°C/10d, meanwhile ocean dynamical processes contribute to the cooling of the warm pool with a rate of -0.01°C/10d. Additionally, the SST and the area of the BoBWP are significantly correlated with ENSO (r=0.66 and 0.73, p=0.05). During El Niño decaying year, the BoBWP primarily expands in a southward direction, with a 75% increase in area. Conversely, during La Niña decaying year, the BoBWP almost disappears, with a 52% decrease.

Strong salinity stratification induced by large freshwater fluxes in the northern Bay of Bengal (BOB) results in the formation of a quasi-permanent barrier layer (BL) that covers almost the entire BOB and leads to a unique temperature inversion within the thick BL in winter. In the presence of temperature inversions, the entrainment process at the bottom of the mixed layer (ML) induces warming effects in the ML, but little is known about this. In this paper, we quantify the contribution of the entrainment process to the ML temperature (MLT) in the northern BOB during the winter of 2013 using monthly and daily data from the Ocean General Circulation Model for the Earth Simulator version 2 (OFES2). It is found that the warming effect of the daily entrainment heat flux (EHF), which resolved the high-frequency variations, is 4 orders of magnitude larger than the monthly EHF for most of the wintertime. This significantly enhanced warming effect in daily data offsets up to 87% of the surface cooling induced by net heat flux during wintertime. A further analysis reveals that the larger daily EHF warming effect compared to its monthly counterpart is closely related to the deepened ML, the larger temperature difference within the ML and vertical velocity at the bottom of the ML.

This research aims to estimate the relationship between green bond financing and the OECD nations' performance on the renewable energy indices. The study attempted to quantify the relationship between concepts by analyzing data from OECD countries for 2011–2019. Padroni unit root test, FMOLS, and DOLS method provide evidence for the study's results and convey broad policy implications on this important topic. The robustness is consequently examined through a long-term sensitivity analysis employing the FMOLS, and green bond financing nexus concerning the renewable energy indices is shown for comparison. The study showed that financing of green bonds had a predictable impact on renewable energy indices variables. Green bonds' unequal implications for renewable energy measures across the study period bear out this interpretation. The study's findings call for full suppot from government institutions, energy agencies, and departments to optimize energy efficiency, as green bond financing played a 32% role in OECD nation's renewable energy index constructions and increased per unit improvement in renewable energy sources by 9.6%. The research offers many policy recommendations for improving energy efficiency through renewable energy generation. Recent studies extend and contribute to the existing body of literature, although the scientific discussion on this subject matter still needs to be more detailed and understudied. Financial unpredictability may be transformed into a tremendous opportunity if the renewable energy business is appropriately regulated.

Over the past two decades, due to the combined effects of natural and human factors, the ecological environment and resources of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) have faced serious threats, profoundly impacting its ecosystem and the lives of its residents. Therefore, the establishment of the ecological security pattern (ESP) is crucial to cope with climate change, maintain ecosystem function, and sustainable development. Based on the Pressure–State–Response (PSR) model, this study constructed an evaluation index system for the ecological security (ES) of the QTP, evaluated the ES of the QTP during 2000–2020, and predicted the ES of the QTP during 2025–2035 based on the deep learning model. Combined with the residents’ perception of ES, the ES of the QTP was evaluated comprehensively. The results showed that: (1) From 2000 to 2020, the ES value of the QTP continued to rise, the number of dangerous and sensitive counties decreased, and the number of other counties increased. The overall spatial distribution features higher values in the southeast and lower values in the northwest and central regions. (2) From 2000 to 2020, both hot spots and cold spots on the QTP decreased, with the hot spots mainly concentrated in the southeast of the QTP, represented by Yunnan Province, and the cold spots shifting from west to east, mainly concentrated in the central QTP, represented by Qinghai Province. (3) The Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model demonstrates high prediction accuracy. Based on the prediction of LSTM, the ES value of the QTP will continue to rise from 2025 to 2035, and the number of safe counties will reach the highest level in history. The spatial distribution is still higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest and central regions. (4) By analyzing residents’ perception of 25 potential factors that may affect the ES of the QTP, the results show that residents generally believe that these factors have an important impact on ES, and their evaluation is between “important” and “very important”. In addition, there is a significant correlation between these factors and the predicted values of ES. The results of the study will help to improve our understanding of the overall ecological environment of the QTP, provide accurate positioning and reasonable help for the government to formulate relevant protection strategies, and lay a methodological and practical foundation for the sustainable development of the QTP.

Sustainability has become an indispensable core consideration when nations formulate their development policies. This study delves into the dynamic correlations between ecosystem services (ESs) and localized Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a typical hilly region in southern China. Various ESs were computed using the InVEST model, while spatial econometric models were employed to assess ES responses to SDG targets at the county, sectoral, and overall spatial levels. The findings revealed the following. (1) From 2005 to 2020, there were differences in the development rates of various SDG targets in Ganzhou. Except for SDG 15, which declined, the development of the other targets showed an overall increasing trend. The development of the various SDG targets was relatively balanced, but SDG 9 and SDG 7 had the highest growth rates, ranging from 9.4% to 10.7% and 9.4% to 10.3%, respectively. The comprehensive SDG assessment index exhibited significant spatiotemporal variation, with a general trend of higher values in the north and lower values in the south. (2) The local ES showed a delayed response to SDG 1 and SDG 2, but there was a significant positive response to SDG 3, SDG 4, SDG 6, SDG 8, and SDG 9. However, responses to SDG 7, SDG 11, SDG 13, and SDG 15 showed regional differences. This study not only provides valuable insights for sustainable development in Ganzhou and other regions of China but also offers Chinese perspectives and experiences that may inform global efforts towards SDG implementation. This study fills the gap in existing research by constructing a localized SDG indicator system and quantifying each SDG indicator, further exploring the response of the ES to each SDG in the region. Looking ahead, we anticipate further research to deepen the understanding of the relationship between ESs and SDG targets on a broader geographical scale and over longer timeframes, aiming to provide a more robust scientific foundation for building a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature in the future.

Increasing access to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) is a key strategy in addressing the opioid crisis. To increase MOUD access, state governments have pursued a combination of increased funding for MOUD and requirements that providers offer treatment. Louisiana has pursued multiple strategies, including a requirement that residential treatment programs offer MOUD as part of their licensure. Using Louisiana Medicaid claims data for enrollees with diagnosed OUD from the period 2018-21, we analyzed trends in MOUD between enrollees treated in residential and nonresidential settings and across demographic subgroups, and we compared trends by MOUD type. MOUD use more than tripled from 2018 to 2021 among Louisiana Medicaid enrollees diagnosed with OUD. Most of the increase in MOUD was attributable to buprenorphine use. Methadone uptake also contributed to greater MOUD use but was almost exclusively used by enrollees treated in nonresidential settings, whereas naltrexone was consistently more common in residential treatment. By 2021, differences persisted across demographic groups: MOUD use was highest among enrollees who were White, were older, had comorbidities, and lived in a metropolitan area. Policies that promote MOUD in substance use treatment programs, particularly residential programs, are critical tools for policy makers confronting a complex and unprecedented national overdose crisis.
