Under global climate change, glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau are experiencing severe retreat, which significantly impacts the regional water cycle and the occurrence of natural hazards. However, detailed insights into the spatiotemporal patterns of this retreat and its climatic drivers remain insufficiently explored. In this study, an adaptive glacier extraction index (AGEI) is proposed based on the analysis of multispectral Landsat images integrated with the Google Earth Engine, and comprehensive and high-resolution mapping of glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau is realized at 5-year intervals from 1988 to 2022. Subsequently, the ERA5-Land air temperature and precipitation data are downscaled to a finer 1 km resolution. Finally, the impacts of the annual and seasonal changes in the downscaled meteorological factors on the glacier extent are quantified. Results demonstrate a rapid yet heterogeneous pattern of glacier retreat across the Tibetan Plateau between 1988 and 2022, with retreat rates ranging from 0.14 ± 0.07 % to 0.51 ± 0.09 % annually. A notable trend is observed: most glaciers experienced a decrease in extent from 1990 to 2000 followed by a slight increase from 2000 to 2010. From 2010, a majority of the glaciers exhibited either a static state or minimal retreat. The most pronounced impact of annual temperature on glacier retreat is observed in the southern Himalayas, with a value of −9.34 × 103 km2 °C−1, and the most restraining impact of precipitation on glacier retreat reaches 261 km2 mm−1, which is observed in the Karakoram Range for the spring season. These insights are pivotal in comprehending the temporal and spatial heterogeneity of glacier retreats and in understanding the effects of climatic variations on the state of glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau.

Abstract The CMS detector, including its muon system, has been operating at the CERN LHC in increasingly challenging conditions for about 15 years. The muon detector was designed to provide excellent triggering and track reconstruction for muons produced in proton–proton collisons at an instantaneous luminosity ( $$\mathcal {L}$$ L ) of $$1 \times 10^{34}$$ 1 × 10 34 cm $$^{-2}$$ - 2 s $$^{-1}$$ - 1 . During the Run 2 data-taking period (2015–2018), the LHC achieved an instantaneous luminosity of twice its design value, resulting in larger background rates and making the efficient detection of muons more difficult. While some backgrounds result from natural radioactivity, cosmic rays, and interactions of the circulating protons with residual gas in the beam pipe, the dominant source of background hits in the muon system arises from proton–proton interactions themselves. Charged hadrons leaving the calorimeters produce energy deposits in the muon chambers. In addition, high-energy particles interacting in the hadron calorimeter and forward shielding elements generate thermal neutrons, which leak out of the calorimeter and shielding structures, filling the CMS cavern. We describe the method used to measure the background rates in the various muon subsystems. These rates, in conjunction with simulations, can be used to estimate the expected backgrounds in the High-Luminosity LHC. This machine will run for at least 10 years starting in 2029 reaching an instantaneous luminosity of $$\mathcal {L} = 5 \times \text {10}^\text {34}\,\text {cm}^\text {-2}\,\text {s}^\text {-1}$$ L = 5 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 and increasing ultimately to $$\mathcal {L} = 7.5 \times \text {10}^\text {34}\,\text {cm}^\text {-2}\,\text {s}^\text {-1}$$ L = 7.5 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 . These background estimates have been a key ingredient for the planning and design of the muon detector upgrade.

Accurate estimation of the wind profile, especially in the lowest few hundred meters of the atmosphere, is of great significance for the weather, climate, and renewable energy sector. Nevertheless, the Monin–Obukhov similarity theory fails above the surface layer over a heterogeneous underlying surface, causing an unreliable wind profile to be obtained from conventional extrapolation methods. To solve this problem, we propose a novel method called the PLM-RF method that combines the power-law method (PLM) with the random forest (RF) algorithm to extend wind profiles beyond the surface layer. The underlying principle is to treat the wind profile as a power-law distribution in the vertical direction, with the power-law exponent (α) determined by the PLM-RF model. First, the PLM-RF model is constructed based on the atmospheric sounding data from 119 radiosonde (RS) stations across China and in conjunction with other data such as surface wind speed, land cover type, surface roughness, friction velocity, geographical location, and meteorological parameters from June 2020 to May 2021. Afterwards, the performance of the PLM-RF, PLM, and RF methods over China is evaluated by comparing them with RS observations. Overall, the wind speed at 100 m from the PLM-RF model exhibits high consistency with RS measurements, with a determination coefficient (R2) of 0.87 and a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.92 m s−1. By contrast, the R2 and RMSE of wind speed results from the PLM (RF) method are 0.75 (0.83) and 1.37 (1.04) m s−1, respectively. This indicates that the estimates from the PLM-RF method are much closer to observations than those from the PLM and RF methods. Moreover, the RMSE of the wind profiles estimated by the PLM-RF model is relatively large for highlands, while it is small for plains. This result indicates that the performance of the PLM-RF model is affected by the terrain factor. Finally, the PLM-RF model is applied to three atmospheric radiation measurement sites for independent validation, and the wind profiles estimated by the PLM-RF model are found to be consistent with Doppler wind lidar observations. This confirms that the PLM-RF model has good applicability. These findings have great implications for the weather, climate, and renewable energy sector.

Salt intrusion in estuaries has been exacerbated by climate change and human activities. Previous studies have primarily focused on salt intrusion in the mainstem of estuaries, whereas those in sub-estuaries (those that branch off their main estuaries) have received less attention. During an extended La Niña event from 2021 to 2022, a sub-estuary (the East River estuary) alongside the Pearl River estuary, China, experienced severe salt intrusions, posing a threat to the freshwater supply in the surrounding area. Observations revealed that maximum salinities in the main estuary typically preceded spring tides, exhibiting significant asymmetry in salinity rise and fall over a fortnightly timescale. In contrast, in the upstream region of the sub-estuary, the variation in salinity was in phase with that of the tidal range, and the rise and fall of the salinity were more symmetrical. Inspired by these observations, we employed idealized numerical models and analytical solutions to investigate the underlying physics behind these behaviors. It was discovered that under normal dry conditions (with a river discharge of 1500 m3 s−1 at the head of the main estuary), the river–tide interaction and change in horizontal dispersion accounted for the in-phase relationship between the salinity and tidal range in the upstream region of the sub-estuary. Under extremely dry conditions (i.e., a river discharge of 500 m3 s−1 at the head of the main estuary), salinity variations were in phase with those of the tidal range in the middle as well as the upstream region of the sub-estuary. The variation in salinity in the main estuary along with those in salt dispersion and freshwater influx inside the sub-estuary collectively influenced salinity variation in the well-mixed sub-estuary. These findings have important implications for water resource management and salt intrusion prevention in the catchment area.

Below-cloud scavenging (BCS) is the process of aerosol removal from the atmosphere between cloud base and the ground by precipitation (e.g., rain or snow), and affects aerosol number or mass concentrations, size distribution, and lifetime. An accurate representation of precipitation phases is important in treating BCS as the efficiency of aerosol scavenging differs significantly between liquid and solid precipitation. The impact of different representations of BCS on existing model biases was examined through implementing a new aerosol BCS scheme in the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) air quality prediction model GEM-MACH and comparing it with the existing scavenging scheme in the model. Further, the current GEM-MACH employs a single-phase precipitation for BCS: total precipitation is treated as either liquid or solid depending on a fixed environment temperature threshold. Here, we consider co-existing liquid and solid precipitation phases as they are predicted by the GEM microphysics. GEM-MACH simulations, in a local-area domain over the Athabasca oil sands areas, Canada, are compared with observed precipitation samples, with a focus on the particulate base cation NH4+; acidic anions NO3-, SO4=, HSO3- in precipitation; and observed ambient particulate sulfate, ammonium, and nitrate concentrations. Overall, the introduction of the multi-phase approach and the new scavenging scheme enhances GEM-MACH performance compared to previous methods. Including a multi-phase approach leads to altered SO4= scavenging and impacts the BCS of SO2 into the aqueous phase over the domain. Sulfate biases improved from +46 % to −5 % relative to Alberta Precipitation Quality Monitoring Program wet sulfate observations. At Canadian Air and Precipitation Monitoring Network stations the biases became more negative, from −10 % to −30 % for the tests carried out here. These improvements contrast with prior annual average biases of +200 % for SO4=, indicating enhanced model performance. Improvements in model performance (via scores for correlation coefficient, normalized mean bias, and/or fractional number of model values within a factor of 2 of observations) could also be seen between the base case and the two simulations based on multi-phase partitioning for NO3-, NH4+, and SO4=. Whether or not these improvements corresponded to increases or decreases in NO3- and NH4+ wet deposition varied over the simulation region. The changes were episodic in nature – the most significant changes in wet deposition were likely at specific geographic locations and represent specific cloud precipitation events. The changes in wet scavenging resulted in a higher formation rate and larger concentrations of atmospheric particle sulfate.

This study evaluates tropospheric columns of methane, carbon monoxide, and ozone in the Arctic simulated by 11 models. The Arctic is warming at nearly 4 times the global average rate, and with changing emissions in and near the region, it is important to understand Arctic atmospheric composition and how it is changing. Both measurements and modelling of air pollution in the Arctic are difficult, making model validation with local measurements valuable. Evaluations are performed using data from five high-latitude ground-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers in the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC). The models were selected as part of the 2021 Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) report on short-lived climate forcers. This work augments the model–measurement comparisons presented in that report by including a new data source: column-integrated FTIR measurements, whose spatial and temporal footprint is more representative of the free troposphere than in situ and satellite measurements. Mixing ratios of trace gases are modelled at 3-hourly intervals by CESM, CMAM, DEHM, EMEP MSC-W, GEM-MACH, GEOS-Chem, MATCH, MATCH-SALSA, MRI-ESM2, UKESM1, and WRF-Chem for the years 2008, 2009, 2014, and 2015. The comparisons focus on the troposphere (0–7 km partial columns) at Eureka, Canada; Thule, Greenland; Ny Ålesund, Norway; Kiruna, Sweden; and Harestua, Norway. Overall, the models are biased low in the tropospheric column, on average by −9.7 % for CH4, −21 % for CO, and −18 % for O3. Results for CH4 are relatively consistent across the 4 years, whereas CO has a maximum negative bias in the spring and minimum in the summer and O3 has a maximum difference centered around the summer. The average differences for the models are within the FTIR uncertainties for approximately 15 % of the model–location comparisons.

The United Nations reported that the mortality risk of Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is five times higher in the elderly than the global average. Although the COVID-19 vaccine effectively prevents infections and reduce mortality among the elderly, vaccine hesitancy among the Chinese elderly poses a significant threat. This study, utilizing the "Confidence, Convenience and Complacency (3 Cs)" vaccine hesitancy model, aimed to explore factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy among the Chinese elderly and assess national countermeasures and potential improvement approaches. Thirteen elderly with vaccine hesitancy and eleven vaccine-related staff participated in semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis revealed three key determinants of vaccine hesitancy among the elderly: perceived low threat of COVID-19, lack of confidence in COVID-19 vaccine, and poor accessibility to vaccination. China has implemented strategies, including advocacy through diverse channels, joint multi-sectoral promotion vaccination, and enhancing ongoing vaccination services. Recommendations from the vaccine-related staff emphasize improving vaccine awareness among the elderly, and prioritizing the vaccination environment and process. The study underscores the importance of targeted vaccination promotion programs addressing hesitation reasons to improve vaccination rates. Furthermore, existing countermeasures can serve as a foundation for enhancing vaccination strategies, including improved publicity, administration, and management approaches.

There is growing evidence that the protein family of Gasdermins (GSDMs) play an essential role during the progression of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, it is not completely clear that how GSDMB, abundantly expressed in epithelial cells of gastrointestinal tract, regulates the tumorigenesis of CRC. A wealth of evidence linking GSDMB to the pathogenesis of cancer has come from genome-wide association studies. Here, we provide evidence that aberrantly upregulated GSDMB is responsible for suppressing the CRC progression by using in vitro cell and intestinal organoid, as well as in vivo GSDMB transgenic mice models. Mechanistically, GSDMB interacts with insulin-like growth factor 2 mRNA-binding protein 1 (IGF2BP1), which directly binds to and recognizes the 3'-UTR of dual specificity phosphatase 6 (DUSP6) mRNA, enhances the translation of DUSP6 protein and inhibits downstream ERK phosphorylation, thereby facilitating cell death and restraining cell proliferation. As communication technologies have become omnipresent, the prevalence of electromagnetic field (EMF) exposures poses possible health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups such as pregnant women. In response, we introduce a triboelectric ferrofluid fiber (TFF) that moves in response to EMF, thereby generating charge in a way that is self-powered. The TFF is flexible, stretchable (470%), and can be woven into fabrics. The TFF utilizes a soft-contact (ferrofluid-silicon rubber fiber) triboelectric core layer to enhance its sensitivity to EMF, enabling it to detect even minor electromagnetic fluctuations, such as those from cell phone typing. By integrating hydrogel electrodes that offer conductivity and minimal electromagnetic interference shielding, the TFF's sensitivity to magnetic fields is further amplified. Moreover, its open-circuit voltage output is increased by 50% compared to the conventional electrodes. Building on this technology, we designed a smart fabric for environmental early warning and potential real-time pulse monitoring, specifically tailored for the safety and healthcare needs of vulnerable groups. Finally, we developed a sensing and communication apparel (SCA) by integrating TFF into the apparel and exploring its capabilities in a wireless transmission of warning signals and long-distance NFC functionality.

Lithium is extensively utilized in industrial energy production, particularly in lithium-ion batteries, and in pharmaceuticals for the treating clinical mood disorders. Consequently, lithium is frequently detected in various environmental matrices. It has been reported to cause a range of toxic effects on aquatic organisms including oxidative stress, neurological disorders, and reproductive suppression. Water acidification is a global issue with numerous negative impacts on aquatic organisms. It can alter the physio-chemical properties and bioavailability of metal ions. The acidic leaching process during lithium battery treatment and global water acidification both suggest that lithium contamination often occurs in acidic environments. In the present study, Daphnia magna neonates were exposed to four treatments (control, lithium alone, low pH, and combined) to investigate whether an acidic environment exacerbates the toxic effects of lithium on aquatic organisms and to explore potential toxic action mechanisms. The results indicated that low pH posed a significant threat to the growth and reproduction of D. magna. When exposed to both lithium and low pH, there was increased lithium accumulation and an energy trade-off response, leading to increased energy allocation to reproduction and reduced energy for growth. Lithium exposure stimulated D. magna activity, while low pH inhibited it, suggesting that an imbalance in energy consumption and supply. Combined exposure to lithium and low pH resulted in severe oxidative stress due to mitochondrial dysfunction, under-utilization of energy substances, and increased ionic homeostasis disturbances. Consequently, the exposed organism altered apoptosis and autophagy processes to maintain homeostasis. Background: The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) has been widely used in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, yet the practical performance of FIT combined with questionnaire-based risk assessment (QRA) remains undetermined. Moreover, risk factors for distinct CRC precursors identified in screening have been rarely compared., Methods: This study was based on a population-based CRC screening in China, with 2,120,340 participants completing both FIT and QRA. Those with positive FIT or high QRA scores were recommended for colonoscopy. We reported the compliance, detection rate, and colonoscopy workload according to FIT and QRA results. We also explored risk factors for conventional adenomas and serrated polyps., Results: The compliance rate of colonoscopy in the subgroup of FIT (+) and QRA (+) was 41.4%, higher than the rates in FIT (+) and QRA (-), as well as FIT (-) and QRA (+), which were 38.7% (P<0.001) and 16.4% (P<0.001), respectively. The corresponding detection rates of advanced neoplasia were 18.2%, 13.2%, and 9.3% (all P <0.001), respectively. Moreover, the required numbers of colonoscopies to detect one advanced neoplasia in the three subgroups were 5.5, 7.6, and 10.8, respectively. Increased body mass index, smoking, alcohol consumption, red meat intake, and type 2 diabetes were associated with higher risk of advanced adenomas and advanced serrated polyps, whereas vegetable intake was inversely associated advanced adenomas., Conclusion: FIT and QRA can synergistically identify individuals at high risk of colorectal advanced neoplasia, with those testing positive for both deserving immediate attention. Modifiable factors were identified to complement screening for preventing CRC precursors.

Background: Extensive research, predominantly in adults, has highlighted structural brain variations among patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, emerging adults, who undergo significant cortical reshaping and are highly vulnerable to depression, receive relatively little attention, despite reporting a higher prevalence of childhood trauma experiences. This study examines cortical gyrification and thickness in emerging adults with first-episode, treatment-naïve MDD, with the objective of investigating their association with childhood trauma., Methods: Eighty-six emerging adults diagnosed with MDD, aged 18 to 25, and eighty-one healthy controls (HCs), underwent T1-MRI scans. We compared the local gyrification index (LGI) and cortical thickness (CT) between the two groups. Subsequently, we examined the relationship between the LGI and CT in clusters showing differences and childhood trauma as well as clinical characteristics in emerging adults with MDD., Results: Compared to HCs, MDD showed decreased LGI in the bilateral superior frontal cortices (SFC) and CT in the left pericalcarine cortex (PCC), while an increase in CT was observed in the left lateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). The reduction in LGI of the right SFC and the decrease in CT of the left PCC are associated with childhood trauma. Monitoring enzyme activity is crucial in both scientific research and clinical applications. However, abnormalities in a single enzyme's activity can indicate multiple diseases, limiting the specificity of single enzyme activity monitoring in clinical diagnosis. We developed a dynamic DNA walker that can be sequentially activated by two enzymes, enabling the monitoring and imaging of both enzyme activities within cells. Initially, the DNA walker contains a site for apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease 1 (APE1). Upon APE1 activation, the DNA walker forms specific structures recognized and cleaved by Flap endonuclease 1 (FEN1). The temporal disparity between the activities of APE1 and FEN1 allows for the sequential monitoring and imaging of both enzymes, reducing the likelihood of false-positive results. To enhance local concentration and decrease reaction time, the DNA walk sequence was attached to the surface of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The fruition of this endeavor will facilitate the investigation and advancement of multiple enzyme activity monitoring and imaging methods and technologies, while simultaneously broadening the domains of application for DNA nanotechnology.

We have developed a novel and straightforward protocol that facilitates the transformation of alkenylsulfonium salts leading to the direct synthesis of E -difluoromethylated alkenes. The success of this method relies on the use of copper catalysis and Vicic-Mikami reagent (DMPU) 2 Zn(CF 2 H) 2 . These mild protocols offer the advantage of selectively synthesizing either aromatic or aliphatic difluoromethylated alkenes. Furthermore, our methodology extends to the perfluoroalkylation of alkenylsulfonium salts. Notably, this approach is conducive to large-scale synthesis and holds promise for diverse applications.

Background: Type 2 diabetes increases the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer. Noninvasive and early assessment of liver fibrosis is essential. We aimed to develop a score to aid in the initial assessment of liver fibrosis in the diabetic population., Methods: A fibrosis investigating navigator in diabetes (FIND) score was developed and validated in the NHANES dataset (2017-2020). Fibrosis was defined as a liver stiffness measurement (LSM) ≥8.0 kPa. The diagnostic accuracies of FIB-4, NFS, LiverRisk, steatosis-associated fibrosis estimator (SAFE) and metabolic dysfunction-associated fibrosis (MAF-5) were compared. FIND was also externally validated in various liver diseases via biopsy as a reference in an Asian centre between 2016 and 2020. Finally, we examined the prognostic implications of the FIND index utilizing data from the UK Biobank cohort (2006-2010)., Results: The FIND score model yielded an AUROC of 0.781 for the prediction of an LSM ≥8 kPa in the validation set, which was consistently greater than that of other available models (all p < 0.05). In the whole NHANES dataset, the 85% sensitivity cut-off of 0.16 corresponded to a NPV of 91.9%, whereas the 85% specificity cut-off of 0.31 corresponded to a PPV of 50.6%. FIND displayed overall accuracies similar to those of the other models in staging fibrosis stages, with biopsy used as a reference. In the UK Biobank cohort, FIND >0.31 was associated with an increased risk of all-cause and liver-related mortality in the diabetic population in adjusted models (HR, 1.75; 95% CI, 1.62-1.89; HR, 23.59; 95% CI, 13.67-40.69)., Conclusions: In diabetes patients, the novel FIND score performs well in identifying subjects at risk of liver fibrosis and predicting all-cause and liver-related mortality., (© 2024 The Author(s). The catalytic membrane-based oxidation-filtration process integrates physical separation and chemical oxidation, offering a highly efficient water purification strategy. However, the oxidation-filtration process is limited in practical applications due to the short residence time of milliseconds within the catalytic layer and the interference of coexisting organic pollutants in real water. Herein, a dual-layer membrane containing a top selective layer and a bottom catalytic layer was fabricated using an in situ co-casting method with a double-blade knife. Experimental results demonstrated that the selective layer rejected macromolecular organic pollutants, thereby alleviating their interference with bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. Concurrently, the catalytic layer activated peracetic acid oxidant and achieved a high BPA degradation exceeding 90 % in milliseconds with reactive oxygen species (especially •OH). The finite-element analysis confirmed a high-concentration reaction field occupying the pore cavity of the catalytic layer, enhancing collision probability between reactive oxygen species and BPA, i.e., the nano-confinement effect. Additionally, the dual-layer membrane achieved a long-term stable performance for emerging contaminant degradation in surface water treatment. Acrolein (ACR) is a widespread, highly toxic substance that poses significant health risks. Flavonoids have been recognized as effective ACR scavengers, offering a possible way to reduce these risks. However, the lack of specific high-throughput screening methods has limited the identification of ACR scavengers, and their actual detoxifying capacity on ACR remains unknown. To address this, we developed a high-throughput screening platform to assess the ACR scavenging capacity of 322 flavonoids. Our results showed that 80.7 % of the flavonoids could scavenge ACR, but only 34.4 % exhibited detoxifying effects in an ACR-injured QSG7701 cell model. Some flavonoids even increased toxicity. Structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis indicated that galloyl and pyrogallol units enhance scavenging but worsen ACR-induced cytotoxicity. Further investigation revealed that epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) could exacerbate ACR-induced redox disorder, leading to cell apoptosis. The comprehensive effects of environmental dredging on heavy metals (HM) are still uncertain. This study comprehensively evaluates the long-term effects of dredging on the environmental risk and bioavailability of HM (Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, and As) in Lake Taihu, China, by comparing simulated dredged treated (D) and undredged (UD) sediment cores under in-situ conditions for one year. Threshold effect level (TEL), geological accumulation index (I geo ), potential ecological risk index (RI), and ratios of secondary phase and primary phase (RSP) methods were used to assess the environmental risk of sediment HM; and the diffusive gradient in thin-films (DGT) technique was applied to assess the bioavailability of sediment HM. The results indicate that Cd was the most polluted metal assessed by the I geo and RI method, and that dredging significantly reduced the total content of sediment HM, particularly for Cu, Zn, and Cd, and its I geo and RI index, but caused a slight effect on its fractionation and distinct effect on RSP index. These indices changed independently and seasonally. Porewater analysis suggested higher HM concentrations in summer and winter may cause corresponding deterioration in overlying water. DGT analysis suggested a large proportion of metal-DOM complexes and showed that dredging reduced the bioavailability of Ni, Cd, and As but had a mixed impact (effective and/or ineffective impact varied with seasons) on other metals. Background: The established body of knowledge attests to the pivotal influence of ANGPTL4 on lipid metabolism and vascular biology. Nevertheless, its potential implication in neurodegenerative disease remains to be fully characterized., Methods: The present investigation delves into the involvement of ANGPTL4 in the pathological progression of PD, both in vitro and in vivo. PD models were induced by intraperitoneal administration of MPTP and LPS in WT and ANGPTL4 -/- mice. Additionally, rANGPTL4 was administered intravenously via the tail. Primary microglia cells cultured from the SNpc and Str regions of brains were exposed to LPS to induce neuroinflammation., Results: The observations unveiled that ANGPTL4 deficiency exacerbated behavioral aberrations, intensified dopaminergic neuron loss, and stimulated microglial activation along with p21-dependent senescence. There was an elevation in the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in the PD model. Furthermore, the administration of rANGPTL4 protein reversed the observed phenotypes in ANGPTL4 -/- mice, a phenomenon further validated in LPS-induced cells. Clinical specimens also manifested diminished levels of ANGPTL4 expression in PD patients. Background: Several studies indicated that C-reactive protein (CRP) is associated with the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in general population. But CRP appears to be unrelated to VTE events in newly diagnosed cancer patients. However, as the survival time of cancer patients increases, the effect of CRP on the long-term risk of VTE may change. We aimed to investigate the association between CRP and VTE in cancer survivors, and further assess the modification effect of genetic susceptibility., Methods: Cox proportional hazards model was used to evaluate the association between serum CRP levels and VTE risk, as well as to investigate the joint effect of CRP and genetic susceptibility. The Kaplan-Meier curve and the restricted cubic spline were used to visualize the relationship between CRP and VTE., Results: This study included 30,145 participants with cancer diagnosis at baseline in the UK Biobank. Over a follow-up period of 344,636 person-years, a total of 1,151 VTE events were recorded. Participants were divided into four groups based on the quartiles of CRP levels. The adjusted hazard ratios (95% CIs) of Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 were 1.00, 1.20 (0.99-1.44), 1.25 (1.04-1.50), and 1.51 (1.25-1.82), respectively. For those with high genetic risk of VTE, high CRP had an additional increased risk for VTE., Conclusion: CRP can be used as a predictive biomarker for VTE risk in cancer survivors, especially for those with high genetic risk. Background: Overweight is thought to affect the outcome of minimally invasive surgery. There is still a lack of controlled studies of laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) versus open pancreaticoduodenectomy (OPD) in overweight patients. This study was designed to compare short-term and long-term outcomes in overweight patients treated with LPD and OPD., Methods: Clinical and follow-up data on overweight patients who received LPD or OPD at Shandong Provincial Hospital from January 2015 to December 2022 were analyzed retrospectively. The bias between groups were balanced by 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM). Kaplan-Meier survival curves described long-term survival outcomes in overweight pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients., Results: A total of 502 overweight patients were enrolled in the study. There were 276 patients in the LPD group and 226 in the OPD group. After matching, 196 patients were enrolled in each group. Compared with the OPD group, the LPD group had fewer estimated blood loss (EBL) (140 vs. 200 mL, P < 0.001), more lymph node dissection (14 vs. 12, P = 0.010), and shorter postoperative length of stay (LOS) (13 vs. 16 days, P < 0.001). There were no significant differences in severe complications, 90-day readmission and mortality rates (all P > 0.05). The subgroup analysis of obese patients also showed that the LPD group had fewer intraoperative EBL, more lymph node dissection, and shorter LOS. The survival analysis showed that overweight patients with PDAC who underwent LPD or OPD had similar overall survival (OS) (23.8 vs.25.7 months, P = 0.963) after PSM., Conclusion: It is safe and feasible for overweight patients undergoing LPD to have less EBL, more lymph node harvesting, and a shorter LOS. Background: Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) is characterized by high mortality rates and various complications, including skeletal muscle atrophy, which significantly exacerbates its outcomes. Despite its clinical relevance, the mechanistic understanding of the relationship between skeletal muscle and the pancreas in SAP remains limited. Our study aimed to elucidate this "organ crosstalk" and its potential implications., Methods: We established an SAP mouse model through pancreatic duct ligation (PDL) and evaluated pancreatic necrosis, skeletal muscle atrophy, and myonectin expression levels. Recombinant myonectin protein was administered in vivo and in vitro to assess its effects on acinar cell necrosis. Mechanistic insights were gained through RNA-seq data analysis and experimental validation. Serum samples from AP patients and healthy controls were collected to investigate the correlation between serum myonectin levels and disease severity., Results: The mouse model exhibited severe pancreatic necrosis, skeletal muscle atrophy, and elevated myonectin levels, with myonectin administration exacerbating model severity. We identified iron accumulation-induced ferroptosis as a key pathway contributing to myonectin-mediated acinar cell necrosis. A total of 22 healthy controls and 52 patients with varying degrees of AP were included in the serum samples and clinical data (36.5% females, age 49.79 ± 16.53). Analysis of serum samples revealed significantly higher myonectin levels in AP patients, correlating with disease severity (R = 0.28, P = 0.041)., Conclusions: Our findings underscore the significant role of myonectin in SAP progression and its potential as a prognostic marker for disease severity in AP patients. Wear particulate debris-induced osteoclast over-activation is a major causative factor in periprosthetic osteolysis and aseptic loosening, resulting in the non-infectious failure of total joint arthroplasty. To mitigate such pathological bone loss, various therapeutic targets have been identified. Oxidative stress is one of the main contributing factors in the promotion of osteoclastogenesis. Herein, using a template-assisted approach, hollow ruthenium oxide (RuO 2 ) nanospheres are synthesized as an effective antioxidant for the treatment of CoCrMo alloy particles-induced osteolysis. Hollow RuO 2 significantly suppressed receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclastogenesis, bone resorption, and the expression of specific markers (including NFATc1, c-Fos, MMP9, CTSK, and DC-STAMP) of bone marrow-derived macrophages via inhibition of the nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α pathways. In mouse calvaria, hollow RuO 2 nanozymes demonstrate an appreciable attenuation in osteoclast differentiation, bone loss, and soft tissue malformations induced by CoCrMo alloy particles. The bioaccumulation of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in aquatic organisms has been extensively explored in recent years due to associated ecological risks and potential threats to human health through food. This study aims to assess the bioaccumulation of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in 18 freshwater fish species from the Pearl River Delta, China. The observed OCP concentrations ranged from 0.69 to 43.15 ng/g wet weight, indicating low to moderate pollution levels. A linear mixed-effects model revealed the contribution of the feeding habits and geographic distributions at 58.67 and 0.67 % of OCP accumulation, respectively. Bottom-dwelling carnivorous fish species exhibited greater OCP residue levels than those in the upper layers of the freshwater. Estuarine organisms showed higher Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) residue levels than those inland species. On the other hand, although there were no direct carcinogenic or exposure risks associated with OCPs in the study area, potential related hazards were observed. Consumers are, therefore, advised to select fish species from the middle and upper delta rather than bottom fish, shellfish, and shrimp. ER-phagy is an evolutionarily conserved mechanism crucial for maintaining cellular homeostasis. However, significant gaps persist in our understanding of how ER-phagy and the ER network vary across cell subtypes, tissues, and organs. Furthermore, the pathophysiological relevance of ER-phagy remains poorly elucidated. Addressing these questions requires developing quantifiable methods to visualize ER-phagy and ER architecture in vivo. We generated two transgenic mouse lines expressing an ER lumen-targeting tandem RFP-GFP (ER-TRG) tag, either constitutively or conditionally. This approach enables precise spatiotemporal measurements of ER-phagy and ER structure at single-cell resolution in vivo. Systemic analysis across diverse organs, tissues, and primary cultures derived from these ER-phagy reporter mice unveiled significant variations in basal ER-phagy, both in vivo and ex vivo. Furthermore, our investigation uncovered substantial remodeling of ER-phagy and the ER network in different tissues under stressed conditions such as starvation, oncogenic transformation, and tissue injury. Photodetectors (PDs) with band selection functions are highly desirable for the future complex environment. Currently, band-selective PDs are typically realized by integrating various optical filters with broadband PDs or constructing heterojunction with multi-photo-absorbing layers. However, these methods cause increased manufacturing costs and device integration complexity. Here, a novel solution-processed perovskite bulk heterojunction (BHJ) layer (MAPbI 3 :MA 3 Bi 2 I 9 ) is developed as photo-absorbing layer, and an effective interface engineering is proposed to selectively shield photo-generated carriers in the BHJ. By regulating the bias voltage, the tunneling probability of photo-generated carrier of MAPbI 3 in the BHJ layer can be easily controlled, enabling band-selective capability. The PD exhibits a superior photo-response in the visible and near-infrared region at the -0.3 V, with responsivity of 26.5 and 70.2 mA W -1 for 500 and 740 nm, respectively. But, at the 0.1 V, the PD responds only to the visible region with a photo-response of 3.7 mA W -1 (500 nm) and maintains a high rejection ratio (R 500 nm /R 740 nm ) of 28.5. This PD also exhibits a fast response speed (rise time: 220 µs, fall time: 240 µs). Brain diseases are a significant threat to human health, especially in the elderly, and this problem is growing as the aging population increases. Efficient brain-targeted drug delivery has been the greatest challenge in treating brain disorders due to the unique immune environment of the brain, including the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Recently, cerebral biomimetic nano-drug delivery systems (CBNDSs) have provided a promising strategy for brain targeting by mimicking natural biological materials. Herein, this review explores the latest understanding of the immune microenvironment of the brain, emphasizing the immune mechanisms of the occurrence and progression of brain disease. Several brain targeting systems are summarized, including cell-based, exosome-based, protein-based, and microbe-based CBNDSs, and their immunological mechanisms are highlighted. Moreover, given the rise of immunotherapy, the latest applications of CBNDSs in immunotherapy are also discussed. This review provides a comprehensive understanding of CBNDSs and serves as a guideline for immunotherapy in treating brain diseases. This study investigates the adsorption efficiencies of twelve hydrogel groups, including chitosan, pectin, sodium alginate, cypress, bitter ginseng, dandelion, persimmon leaf, and magnetic hydrogels, for the removal of copper ions, methylene blue, and congo red from aqueous solutions. The hydrogels were characterized using SEM, XRD, XPS, BET, VSM, TGA, FTIR, and DFT calculations to elucidate their structural and functional properties. Adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and mechanisms were thoroughly analyzed, with models fitted to the experimental data. Among the tested hydrogels, pectin-cellulose demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity for copper ions, Phellodendron-polysaccharide-cellulose for methylene blue, and magnetic cellulose-based hydrogels for congo red. This research highlights the potential of these innovative hydrogels as sustainable solutions for wastewater treatment, effectively addressing critical environmental challenges by removing hazardous substances. To elucidate the mechanisms underlying the changes in the rheological properties of dough made from wheat flour during maturation, the molecular structure of gluten before and after maturation was characterized. Wheat flour was matured under three distinct conditions for predetermined durations. The development time, stability, and maximum force of dough peaked at 7.10 min, 8.58 min, and 88.98 N, respectively, after 40 days of maturation at 25 °C and 40 °C. Compared to the control, the storage modulus of dough made from wheat flour matured at 40 °C increased, while creep compliance decreased, indicating improved deformation resistance and a closer resemblance to viscoelastic solid materials. SDS-PAGE and molecular weight distribution indicated that maturation induces the binding of gluten peaks, evoking small molecular weight proteins to form larger protein clusters through folding. Compared to the control, the content of disulfide bonds significantly (P < 0.05) increased, tightening the protein network, while fluorescence intensity decreased after 40-50 days. This is accompanied by a distinct cross-linkage structure, confirmed by AFM. Among the three maturation conditions, 40 °C had the most pronounced effect, followed by 25 °C. Classical swine fever virus (CSFV) is a highly contagious and economically important pathogen threatening pig industry worldwide, the envelope glycoprotein E2 of CSFV is the dominant antigen inducing strong antiviral neutralizing immunity. In this study, 7 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) with neutralizing potency were generated using E2 protein of CSFV Shimen strain (SM) expressed by eukaryotic cells. Their reactivity with 116 CSFV strains in cell cultures and E2 proteins of 10 subgenotypes in western blots showed different CSFV spectrums they recognized. Of them, three (HCL-001, HCL-005 and HCL-010) reacted with all CSFV subgenotypes, while HCL-014 and HCL-002 reacted with most CSFV strains, except for some variants in genotype 2.3. In contrast, mAb HCL-009 reacted only with a few subgenotype 1.1 strains including SM, field strains and some vaccine strains. Interestingly, mAb HCL-018 reacted only with SM and field subgenotype 1.1 strains, not with any vaccine strains. Further epitope mapping using chimeric and site-directed mutated E2 proteins showed that HCL-001, HCL-005 and HCL-010 recognized a conservative epitope motif 143 SPT 145 ,L 147 , and HCL-002 recognized a conformational epitope with key aa motifs of 95 GDD 97 , 157 RX(D/E)K(R)XFXXR 164 . HCL-014 recognized a new conservative epitope with key aa motifs of 41 D, 58 XNVVXRR 64 . HCL-009 and HCL-018 recognized the epitope with key aa motifs of 36 D, 40 ND 41 , 45 KXI 47 and 69 LHXGXLLT 76 , respectively. Background: Accumulation of senescent cells in tissues and their downstream effect programs have emerged as key drivers of aging and age-associated pathologies. Recent progresses in senotherapeutics indicated that either selectively killing senescent cells with senolytics or suppressing the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) secretion using senomorphics contributes to extending of the healthy lifespan and alleviating numerous age-related disorders in mice., Purpose: However, the potential side-effects and long-term cytotoxicity of the above novel compounds have not yet been determined. Therefore, it seems to be more efficient to explore new senotherapeutical functions from approved drugs., Methods: The effects of valproic acid (VPA), a derivative of valine, in cellular senescence were evaluated by senescence-associated β galactosidase (SA-β-Gal) staining, flow cytometry and western blot (WB). The cell viability was tested using CCK-8 kits. Cell apoptosis was detected by Annexin V-EGFP/PI apoptosis detection kit. Cell autophagy was checked using GFP-RFP-LC3 ratiometric plasmid. The roles of VPA in lung aging were investigated by in vivo experiments using H&E and Masson staining, WB, as well as electronic microscope strategies., Results: Here we identified VPA was able to induce an over-accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) (>1.5 times increasing) and apoptosis (>2 times increasing) of senescent cells. Mechanistically, VPA activated the phospholipid modifying enzyme membrane-bound O-acyltransferase domain-containing protein 1 (MBOAT1), which was repressed during senescence, then promoted mitochondrial autophagy and apoptosis. Background: Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is defined as cardiac dysfunction involving changes in structure, function, and metabolism in the absence of coronary artery disease, which eventually developed into heart failure. There is still a lack of effective drugs for the treatment of DCM, while the ameliorative effects of traditional herbs on DCM have been commonly reported. Polydatin (PD) is a glucoside derivative of traditional herbs of resveratrol, which has been shown to ameliorate the pathological development of DCM. However, the cardioprotective effect and mechanism of PD in the improvement of myocardial injury are still unclear., Aim of Study: This study aimed to investigate the cardio-protective role of PD on DCM and reveal the critical effect of Cav1 in PD' regulation of DCM., Materials and Methods: The Cav1 -/- and Cav1 +/+ mice and H9C2 cells were used to induce DCM models and then given PD treatment (150 mg/kg) or not. The cardiac functions of all mice were checked via echocardiography, and myocardial histological changes were measured by H&E, periodic acid-schiff (PAS) and Masson staining. The markers expression of heart fibrosis and inflammation, and hypertrophic factors were detected using western blotting. The NF-κB signaling activation was performed by confocal, immunohistochemical, Electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) and western blotting., Results: Here, we found that PD significantly improved the cardiac function and injury of diabetic Cav1 +/+ mice, and enhanced the expression of Cav1 in the cardiac tissues of diabetic Cav1 +/+ mice and HG-induced H9C2 cells. A membrane-aerated conductive biofilm reactor (MA-CBR) was constructed for carbon-limited wastewater treatment and to reduce the stress of the electric field on nitrous oxide reductase (NosZ). Counter-diffusion with an embedded aerobic layer declined the effect of current on NosZ (K00376) for N 2 O reduction. Other coding genes for denitrification in cathodic membrane aerated biofilms, including K02568, K00368, K15864, K02305, and K04561, were also positively affected by the electric field and significantly accumulate in Thauera. NH 4 + -N oxidation can occur at the anode and cathode (membrane aeration biofilm). This cathodic synergistic NH 4 + -N oxidation provided more electrons to be directly utilized by the denitrifying bacteria at the cathode. Ferryl ions (Fe(IV)) are often thought to play an important role in iron-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), and their presence is typically inferred through the unique pathway of methyl phenyl sulfoxide (PMSO) conversion to methyl phenyl sulfone (PMSO 2 ). Here, we first employed probe method by degrading the mixed system containing PMSO, benzoic acid (BA), nitrobenzene (NB) to analyze the steady-state concentration of Fe (IV) in the iron-based heterogeneous persulfate reaction system. In addition, studies were conducted on the direct oxidation of PMSO by different oxidants under different pH conditions, and the results showed that peroxymonosulfate (PMS), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and sodium periodate (PI) can directly oxidize PMSO and convert it into PMSO 2 . Furthermore, the influence of different types of iron salts and biomass on the prepared iron-biochar (Fe-BC) for the activation of persulfate on degradation of PMSO and the formation of PMSO 2 was also investigated. Background: Early femoral neck shortening after femoral neck system (FNS) fixation for displaced femoral neck fractures can occur in 22.3%-39.1% of cases, leading to decreased hip joint function. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using an anti-shortening screw (ASS) in FNS fixation to prevent postoperative femoral neck shortening in displaced femoral neck fractures., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 106 cases of displaced femoral neck fractures treated with FNS at the Hospital from April 2020 to April 2023. Patients were divided into two groups based on the use of an ASS: the traditional group and the ASS group, each consisting of 53 cases. The ASS group was age-matched with the traditional group treated during the same period without an ASS. The study variables included age, sex, body mass index (BMI), smoking and drinking history, injury mechanism, side of injury, fracture type, surgical time, intraoperative blood loss, Harris Hip Score (HHS) at the final follow-up, radiographic assessment (femoral neck shortening), and complications (infection, femoral head necrosis, nonunion, and secondary surgery). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software, with continuous and categorical variables analyzed using appropriate parametric (t-test) and nonparametric (Mann-Whitney U test) tests, and chi-square or Fisher's exact tests, respectively. A p-value <0.05 was considered significant., Results: There were no significant differences in background characteristics between the traditional and ASS groups. The shortening distance at postoperative day 1 did not differ significantly between the two groups (0 vs. 0 mm, p = 0.120). However, at 1, 3 months, and 1 year postoperatively, the femoral neck shortening in the ASS group was significantly less than that in the traditional group (1 month: 2.3 vs. 3.1 mm, p = 0.007; 3 months: 2.6 vs. 3.5 mm, p = 0.005; 1 year: 2.6 vs. 3.5 mm, p = 0.002). The ASS group also had a significantly lower shortening distance during the fracture healing process (0.9 vs. 2.7 mm, p = 0.005). The incidence of moderate to severe shortening (≥5 mm) at 1 year postoperatively was lower in the ASS group compared with the traditional group (15.1% vs. 37.7%, p = 0.001). The ASS group had a longer surgical time (63.0 ± 13.4 vs. 73.0 ± 23.2 min, p = 0.008) and a higher HHS (90.7 vs. 94.8, p = 0.008). There was no significant difference in fracture healing time or postoperative complications between the two groups. The traditional group had 3.8% cutouts, 7.5% nonunions, 5.7% avascular necrosis, and 7.5% secondary hip replacements. The ASS group saw 0% cutouts, 1.9% nonunions, 3.8% avascular necrosis, and 3.8% hip replacements. GSDMB-mediated pyroptosis facilitates a pro-inflammatory immune microenvironment and needs to be tightly regulated to avoid excessive inflammation. Here, we provide evidence that itaconate and its cell-permeable derivative 4-octyl itaconate (4-OI) can significantly inhibit GSDMB-rendered pyroptotic activity independent of Nrf2. 4-OI interferes proteolytic process of GSDMB by directly modifying Cys54, Cys148 and Ser212 on granzyme A (GrzA), a serine protease that site-specifically cleaves the inter-domain linker of GSDMB, instead of interaction with GSDMB, thereby blocking pyroptosis and exerts anti-inflammatory effects. Moreover, 4-OI alleviates inflammation by suppressing GSDMB-induced pyroptotic cell death during acute colitis models in intestinal epithelial GSDMB conditional transgenic mice. Our data expand the role of 4-OI as a crucial immunometabolic derivative that regulates innate immunity and inflammation through a newly identified posttranslational modification, and targeting of pyroptosis by 4-OI therefore holds potent therapeutic potential for primarily inflammatory and/or autoimmune diseases., (© 2024 The Author(s). Residues of pesticides in milk may pose a threat to human health. This study aimed to develop a liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) method using hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP)-based supramolecular solvent (SUPRAS) for the simultaneous extraction and purification of four pesticides (boscalid, novaluron, cypermethrin and bifenthrin) in milk. Pesticides were extracted using SUPRAS prepared with nonanol and HFIP, and the extraction efficiency was analyzed. Results showed satisfactory recoveries ranging from 80.8%-111.0%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of <6.4%. Additionally, satisfactory linearities were observed, with correlation coefficients >0.9952. The limits of quantification (LOQs) were in the range of 1.8 μg·L -1 -14.0 μg·L -1 . The established method demonstrated high extraction efficiency with a short operation time (15 mins) and low solvent consumption (2.7 mL). The growth and development of myofibers, as the fundamental units comprising muscle tissue, and their composition type are indeed among the most crucial factors influencing skeletal muscle types. Muscle fiber adaptation is closely associated with alterations in physiological conditions. Muscle fiber types undergo dynamic changes in fetus and adult horses. Our aim is to investigate the mechanisms influencing the differences in muscle fiber types between fetal and adult stages of Mongolian horses. The study investigated the distribution of muscle fiber types within longissimus dorsi muscle of fetus and adult Mongolian horses. A total of 652 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), 476 Differentially expressed lncRNAs (DELs), and 174 Differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMIRs) were identified using deep RNA-seq analysis. The results of functional analysis reveal the transformations in muscle fiber type from the fetal to adult stage in Mongolian horses. The up-regulated DEGs were implicated in the development and differentiation of muscle fibers, while down-regulated DEGs were associated with muscle fiber contraction, transformation, and metabolism. Additionally, connections between non-coding RNA and mRNA landscapes were identified based on their functional alterations, some non-coding RNA target genes may be associated with immunity. Mycoplasma Penetrans (Mpe) is an AIDS-related mycoplasma that is also closely related to respiratory diseases. Proteins involved in the first phase of Fe-S cluster biosynthesis in the SUF-like pathway are essential in Gram-positive bacteria because there is no redundant Fe-S cluster biosynthetic pathway in these proteins. In this study, we characterized two essential proteins: cysteine desulphurase (MpeSufS) and sulfurtransferase (MpeSufU) in Mpe, and resolved their crystal structures. Our results reveal that MpeSufS belongs to type II cysteine desulfurase, and MpeSufU is a Zn 2+ -containing sulfurtransferase. Residue Q342 in MpeSufS and the zinc atom in MpeSufU mediate sulfur transfer from MpeSufS to MpeSufU. Mutation of Q342 significantly impacts the cysteine desulfurase activity. The utilization of Pd(ii)-catalyzed oxidation for the transformation of terminal olefins into methyl ketones has emerged as a particularly intriguing and versatile strategy in organic synthesis. Herein we report a novel Pd(ii)-catalyzed Wacker-type oxidation with covalent bidentate ligands. The ligand, 1-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2-dihydro-3 H -indazol-3-one, exhibits excellent performance in converting olefins to ketones. The optimized reaction conditions include the use of TBHP as oxidant, EtOH or MeCN as solvent and short reaction time. Recently, the issue of electromagnetic pollution has become increasingly prominent. Flexible polymer films with various conductive fillers are preferred to address this problem due to their highly efficient and durable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance. However, their applications are restricted by the unbalanced and insufficient electromagnetic wave absorption and shielding capabilities, as well as the weak interlayer bonding force. In this work, robust flexible multifunctional AgNW/MXene/NiCo-C (AMN) films are fabricated by hierarchical casting assembly and an encapsulated conductive fabric strategy. The synergistic effect of the conductive-absorption integrated sandwich core fabric and the conductive encapsulation layer collaborate to provide excellent absorption-dominated EMI shielding (EMI SE max = 89.12 dB with an ultralow reflectivity value of 0.19) and Joule heating (a high temperature of 103.5 °C at 4.5 V) performances. Besides, AMN films with embedded fabrics as a reinforcement structure achieved enhanced peel (1.97 N mm -1 ) and tensile (7.85 MPa) strengths through an interface enhancement process (plasma and pre-immersion treatments). Phase engineering-assisted tuning of the plasma resonance properties of multifunctional nanocomposites provides an excellent opportunity to improve analytical performance. It is anticipated to break the dominating bottleneck of insufficient signal brightness in identifying imperceptible variation of the target concentration and further enhance the sensitive immunochromatographic assays (ICAs) analysis. Herein, by simply assembling isolated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the surface of MIL-101(CuFe) (named MCF) with a tunable size and crystal phase, we synthesized amorphous-crystalline MCF@AuNPs nanocomposites as immuno signal tracers. For the first time, we utilized phase transformation to assist in realizing the effective regulation of the plasma resonance properties of MCF@AuNPs. It exhibits extraordinary colorimetric intensity, photothermal conversion efficiency (59.1%), stability, and dispersion, all of which facilitate the construction of sensitive and accurate bimodal complementary ICA. With a proof-of-concept for streptomycin, the MCF@AuNPs-ICA showed the limit of detection (LOD) at 0.14 ng mL -1 with remarkable university in different samples. The development of highly efficient and cost-effective nonprecious metal catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of halogenated nitroarenes is very appealing yet challenging. Here, we demonstrate that the hydrogenation activity and selectivity of Co single-atom catalyst (SAC) can be tuned by tailoring the structure of second coordination sphere via P doping. As revealed by synchrotron radiation-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy characterizations, such a P doping on N-coordinated Co SAC results in the unsymmetric Co-N 4 P 1 coordination structure. With a combination of experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations, we find that tailoring the second coordination sphere can greatly improve H 2 dissociation and product desorption. As a result, the Co-N 4 P 1 SAC exhibits superior activity, selectivity and stability for the hydrogenation of halogenated nitroarenes to corresponding amines (20 examples, >99 % yields) at 80 °C under 0.5 MPa H 2 pressure, significantly outperforming most heterogeneous catalysts reported in the literature. Background: Colon inflammation plays an essential role in the development and progression of colorectal cancer. Emerging evidence from clinical and animal studies indicates that metformin may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer through its anti-inflammatory effects., Aims: To investigate the efficacy of metformin in reducing the risk of colorectal cancer and the possible pathways and mechanisms., Methods: The Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides Fragilis (ETBF)/azoxymethane (AOM)/dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) mouse model was established and low-dose metformin (125 mg/kg) or high-dose metformin (250 mg/kg) was administered daily by gavage. Colon tumors were counted, and colon tissue was stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE) and Periodic Acid-Schiff's and Alcian Blue (PAS-AB). Colon Ki67, ZO-1 Muc2, Claudin-1, Occludin, MPO, reactive oxygen species (ROS), E-cadherin, CD206 and Arg-1 expression were detected by immunohistochemistry or immunofluorescence staining. NF-κB pathway-related protein expression was assessed by Western blot. Fecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels were also examined., Results: Our results showed that low- or high-dose metformin ameliorates colonic mucosal damage, reduces colonic inflammation, and eventually inhibits colorectal tumorigenesis in the ETBF/AOM/DSS mouse model. Our further research found that metformin suppresses the expression of TLR4/MyD88/NFκB/MAPK pathway-related proteins, modulates macrophage M2 polarization and increases SCFA levels in colon contents, which may be the mechanisms by which metformin exerts a protective effect against colon carcinogenesis., Conclusion: Metformin inhibited colorectal tumorigenesis by suppressing the TLR4/MyD88/NFκB/MAPK pathway, modulating macrophage M2 polarization and increasing SCFA levels. The development of an efficient lactose biosensor employing cellobiose dehydrogenases (CDHs) for monitoring and precise control of the lactose levels in dairy-based products is extremely important for the health of lactose-intolerant population. In this study, the mesophilic (Nc&#95;CDH) and thermophilic (Ct&#95;CDH-A, Ct&#95;CDH-B) CDHs were successfully obtained by heterologous expression and treated with α-1,2-mannosidase and endoglycosidase H to prepare the deglycosylated forms (Nc&#95;dCDH, Ct&#95;dCDH-A, and Ct&#95;dCDH-B); then, the effects of deglycosylation on the catalytic activity in solution and electrochemical performance on electrodes for lactose detection were systematically investigated. In solution, Nc&#95;dCDH was more stable and had a higher V max value and lower K M value than Nc&#95;CDH at different temperatures and pH values. In contrast, deglycosylation had adverse effects on the stability of Ct&#95;CDH-A and Ct&#95;CDH-B. When the CDHs mixed with multi-walled carbon nanotubes were dropped and immobilized on electrodes, with regard to Nc&#95;CDH, in the presence of the same concentration of lactose, the detection current of the electrode modified with Nc&#95;dCDH was higher than that of the electrode modified with Nc&#95;CDH, and it had a lower detection limit (2.006 mM) and higher sensitivity (39.37 μA.mmol.L -1 .cm -2 ). However, with respect to the thermophilic CDHs, the sensitivity was lowered and the detection limit was increased after deglycosylation. The discrepancy may result from two reasons: N-glycosylation may play a more crucial role in thermostability and structural stability of thermophilic CDHs, and the distribution sites of glycosylated residues may affect the electron transfer kinetics. Camellia oleifera is an economically important woody oil plant. Complex ploidy and lack of genomic information have seriously hindered the molecular breeding of C. oleifera. Here, we present an 11.43-Gb haplotype-resolved, chromosome-level genome assembly of tetraploid C. oleifera (COL-tetra). Methods employed in this study support the conclusion that COL-tetra is an autotetraploid and probably originates from genome doubling of the diploid C. brevistyla. In addition, DNA methylation plays a significant role in imbalanced allelic expression and seed development. Genetic divergence analyses reveal significant differentiation signals for flowering time between spring-flowering and autumn-flowering oil Camellia species, which probably account for reproductive isolation between species with distinct flowering times. Strong introgression signals are detected between COL-tetra and C. sasanqua and between C. vietnamensis and COL-hexa, which might affect the development of agronomic traits and environmental adaptability. Despite recent advances in treatment strategy, lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, and it is a serious threat to human health. Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the most common histological type of lung cancer, and approximately 40-50% of patients with LUAD in Asian populations have epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations. The use of EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) has revolutionarily improved the prognosis of patients with EGFR-mutated LUAD. However, acquired drug resistance is the main cause of treatment failure. Therefore, new therapeutic strategies are necessary to address the resistance to EGFR-TKIs in patients with LUAD. Cancer stemness-related factors lead to multiple-drug resistance in cancer treatment, including EGFR-TKI resistance. Coiled-coil domain-containing 34 (CCDC34) serves as an oncogene in several types of cancer. However, the role and molecular mechanism of CCDC34 in the malignant progression of LUAD have not been reported to date. In the present study, we found that CCDC34 may be associated with LUAD stemness through weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). Furthermore, we demonstrated that CCDC34 promoted LUAD stemness properties through β-catenin-mediated regulation of ATG5-induced autophagy, which was conducive to acquired EGFR-TKI resistance in LUAD in vitro and in vivo. Knockdown CCDC34 can synergistically inhibit tumor growth when combined with EGFR-TKIs.
