- Abstract
The emergence of alternative stable states in forest systems has significant implications for the functioning and structure of the terrestrial biosphere, yet empirical evidence remains scarce. Here, we combine global forest biodiversity observations and simulations to test for alternative stable states in the presence of evergreen and deciduous forest types. We reveal a bimodal distribution of forest leaf types across temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere that cannot be explained by the environment alone, suggesting signatures of alternative forest states. Moreover, we empirically demonstrate the existence of positive feedbacks in tree growth, recruitment and mortality, with trees having 4–43% higher growth rates, 14–17% higher survival rates and 4–7 times higher recruitment rates when they are surrounded by trees of their own leaf type. Simulations show that the observed positive feedbacks are necessary and sufficient to generate alternative forest states, which also lead to dependency on history (hysteresis) during ecosystem transition from evergreen to deciduous forests and vice versa. We identify hotspots of bistable forest types in evergreen-deciduous ecotones, which are likely driven by soil-related positive feedbacks. These findings are integral to predicting the distribution of forest biomes, and aid to our understanding of biodiversity, carbon turnover, and terrestrial climate feedbacks.

6. Tuber Chemical Composition and Acrylamide Formation Potential in three Potato Cultivars Supplied with two Nitrogen Sources

- Abstract
Some traits of potato tubers can affect their quality, contributing to potential acrylamide formation in chips. Using three potato cultivars with contrasting dry biomass and reducing sugar contents, the effects of nitrogen source and storage conditions on tuber non-structural carbohydrate and free amino acid contents were evaluated. Color and acrylamide precursors formation were also evaluated. Cultivars presented their own characteristics for accumulation of sugars and free amino acids, the nitrogen source having only a minor effect on carbohydrates and amino acids contents. Starch mobilization and free amino acid accumulation occurred in all cultivars, but one presented the greatest sugars contents after cold storage. In general, tubers having the greatest sugar and amino acids contents also presented color alteration in chips and greatest acrylamide content. Selecting potato cultivars with lower sugars content and sensitivity to cold storage could be strategies to reduce contents of acrylamide precursors in tubers that decrease chips quality. Algunos rasgos de los tubérculos de papa pueden afectar a su calidad, contribuyendo a la formación potencial de acrilamida en patatas fritas. Usando tres variedades de papa con diferente biomasa seca y contenido de azúcares reductores, fueron evaluados los efectos de las fuentes de nitrógeno y las condiciones de almacenamiento sobre los carbohidratos no estructurales y los contenidos de aminoácidos libres de los tubérculos. El color y la formación de precursores de acrilamida fueron también evaluados. Las variedades presentaron sus propias características de acumulación de azúcares y aminoácidos libres, mientras que la fuente de nitrógeno tuvo sólo un efecto limitado sobre los carbohidratos y contenidos de aminoácidos. La movilización del almidón y la acumulación de aminoácidos libres se produjeran en todas las variedades, pero una presentó los mayores contenidos de azúcares después de almacenamiento en frío. En general, los tubérculos que tuvieron los mayores contenidos de azúcares y aminoácidos también presentaron devaluación del color en las patatas fritas, y mayor contenido de acrilamida. La selección de variedades de papa con menores concentraciones de azúcares y sensibilidad al almacenamiento en frío podrían ser estrategias para disminuir los contenidos de precursores de acrilamida en tubérculos, lo cual degrada la calidad de las patatas fritas.

- Abstract
The density of wood is a key indicator of the carbon investment strategies of trees, impacting productivity and carbon storage. Despite its importance, the global variation in wood density and its environmental controls remain poorly understood, preventing accurate predictions of global forest carbon stocks. Here we analyse information from 1.1 million forest inventory plots alongside wood density data from 10,703 tree species to create a spatially explicit understanding of the global wood density distribution and its drivers. Our findings reveal a pronounced latitudinal gradient, with wood in tropical forests being up to 30% denser than that in boreal forests. In both angiosperms and gymnosperms, hydrothermal conditions represented by annual mean temperature and soil moisture emerged as the primary factors influencing the variation in wood density globally. This indicates similar environmental filters and evolutionary adaptations among distinct plant groups, underscoring the essential role of abiotic factors in determining wood density in forest ecosystems. Additionally, our study highlights the prominent role of disturbance, such as human modification and fire risk, in influencing wood density at more local scales. Factoring in the spatial variation of wood density notably changes the estimates of forest carbon stocks, leading to differences of up to 21% within biomes. - Abstract
Knowledge on hormonal regulation of reproductive cycles in viperid snakes is still incipient, especially when it comes to females and tropical species. There is an urgent need to understand the reproduction of venomous snakes to improve assisted reproduction techniques and optimize the maintenance of these animals in captivity. With this in mind, we monitored Northern pit viper females year-round throughout different seasons via serum levels of progesterone (P
4 ) and estradiol (E2 ) in conjunction with ultrasound examinations. Ovarian follicles were classified according to their size and stage of vitellogenesis in F-I and F-II (non-vitellogenic phase) or in F-III and F-IV (vitellogenic phase). During autumn and winter, five adult males were rotated among these females for reproductive pairing, which resulted in 17 copulations and 2 pregnancies in the first year and 12 copulations and 5 pregnancies in the second year. Then, we assessed changes in P4 and E2 levels according to seasons, predominant ovarian structures and the presence of embryos or eggs in the oviduct. Our findings showed high levels of E2 when a greater number of vitellogenic follicles were detected, indicating a possible influence of E2 on vitellogenesis and higher levels of P4 whenever eggs and embryos were visualized in the oviduct, implying its role in maintaining pregnancy. Descriptive analysis of the vipers' ovarian cycles revealed a greater number of vitellogenic follicles during winter, probably as a result of increases in E2 ; whereas pregnancies occurred predominantly in spring, under the influence of P4. The use of ultrasound images, as a minimally invasive methodology, associated with serum steroid levels has proven to be an efficient approach in the reproductive monitoring of Northern pit vipers in vivo. In addition, these data suggest that female pit vipers under human care display a seasonal reproductive cycle, despite earlier studies involving captive males of the species indicating a lack of seasonality in sperm production and quality., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Inc. - Abstract
This study aimed to assess the effect of bulk tank milk (BTM), waste milk (WM), and pasteurized waste milk (PWM) on nutrient digestibility, ruminal and cecal fermentation, gastrointestinal tract (GIT) development, and antimicrobial resistance of fecal Escherichia coli from dairy calves at 2 periods (30 and 60 d of age). Calves were grouped according to BW, serum protein levels, and breed composition. Three treatments were included: BTM (n = 21), WM from cows under antibiotic treatment (n = 21), and PWM (WM submitted to HTST pasteurization; n = 21). A total of 63 calves were used, of which 18 animals (n = 6 per treatment) were evaluated in the period of 4 to 30 d, and 45 (n = 15 per treatment) from 4 to 60 d. During the experimental period, a daily intake of 6 L of milk was divided into 2 equal meals, with ad libitum access to water and starter. Milk and feed intakes were recorded daily. Apparent total-tract digestibility and nitrogen balance were conducted from 25 to 29 d of age (n = 6) and from 53 to 57 d of age (n = 15). Animals were slaughtered at 30 ± 1 and 60 ± 1 d of age for the assessment of ruminal and cecal fermentation and GIT development. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was conducted at 1, 30, and 60 d of age (n = 15/treatment). Statistical analysis used a linear mixed-effects model for continuous outcomes and generalized linear models for single measurements (R software). Treatments WM and PWM had lower rumen pH, higher ruminal acetate concentration, larger reticulorumen and liver, and a higher prevalence of fecal-resistant E. coli compared with BTM at both 30 and 60 d. Up to 60 d, both BTM and WM treatments exhibited higher digestibility of ether extract and gross energy compared with the PWM, whereas WM and PWM treatments showed increased nitrogen intake and retention compared with the BTM treatment. These findings suggest that pasteurization of WM negatively affects nutrient digestibility and calf performance, while also affecting rumen development. 11. Enhanced Cytotoxicity against a Pancreatic Cancer Cell Line Combining Radiation and Gold Nanoparticles.

- Abstract
The present work consisted of an exploratory study aiming to evaluate in vitro the potential of AuNPs during Radiation Therapy (RT) in human pancreatic adenocarcinoma cells. AuNPs coated with hyaluronic and oleic acids (HAOA-AuNPs) or with bombesin peptides (BBN-AuNPs) were used. AuNPs were characterized by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Dynamic Light Scattering. BxPC-3 tumor cells were irradiated with a 6 MV X-rays beam, in the absence or presence of AuNPs. AFM showed that HAOA-AuNPs and BBN-AuNPs are spherical with a mean size of 83 ± 20 nm and 49 ± 12 nm, respectively. For RT alone, a reduction in cell viability of up to 33 ± 12% was obtained compared to the control ( p ≤ 0.0001). HAOA-AuNPs alone at 200 and 400 μM showed a reduction in cell viability of 20 ± 4% and 35 ± 4%, respectively, while for BBN-AuNPs, at 50 and 200 μM, a reduction in cell viability of 25 ± 3% and 37 ± 3% was obtained, respectively, compared to the control ( p < 0.0001). At 72 h post-irradiation, a decrease in cell viability of 26 ± 3% and 22 ± 2% between RT + HAOA-AuNPs at 400 μM and RT + BBN-AuNPs at 50 μM, compared to RT alone, was obtained ( p < 0.004). The combination of RT with AuNPs led to a significant decrease in cell viability compared to the control, or RT alone, thus representing an improved effect.

- Abstract
Intensive home treatment (IHT) has shown to be a feasible alternative to hospitalization for the management of acute psychiatric episodes, but there are no real-world studies assessing if patients with a first IHT use it again for the management of their recurrences. The objectives of this retrospective cohort study were to map the use ofacute treatment resources after the implementation of IHT in our territory through the establishment of trajectories of management, and to disentangle if there are profiles of patients who fit better each trajectory. We included the first 1000 episodes admitted to IHT, of which we selected those that corresponded to the first IHT of a patient (index admission). Trajectories after the index admission were: (T-A) absence of use of acute resources, (T-B) only IHT, and (T-C) at least one hospitalization. Follow-up ranged from 6 months to 6 years. We calculated the frequency of each trajectory and performed univariate analyses searching for associations between trajectory and clinical factors. Among those patients with psychiatric history (N = 659), 66.2% followedT-A, 11.2% T-B, and 22.6% T-C. The probability of following T-C was higher for patients with a psychotic disorder (p
Bonf = 0.018) and with previous hospitalizations (pBonf < 0.0001). Among those patients without psychiatric history (N = 168), 82.7% followed T-A, 6.6% T-B, and 10.7% T-C. The probability of following T-B was higher for those with a higher severity at the index admission (pBonf = 0.028). This study shows that some -or even all- recurrences of some subjects were successfully managed with IHT, providing real-world evidence for its use in acute psychiatric conditions., (© 2024. Sea turtles, with their global distribution and complex life cycle, often accumulate pollutants such as metals and metalloids due to their extended lifespan and feeding habits. However, there are limited studies exploring the impact of metal pollution on the reproductive health of female sea turtles, specifically focusing on the quality of their eggs, which has significant implications for the future generations of these charismatic animals. São Tomé Island, a crucial nesting and feeding habitat for green sea turtles, underscores the urgent need for comprehensive research in this ecologically significant area. This study aimed to investigate whether metals and metalloids in the blood of nesting female green sea turtles induce genotoxic effects in their erythrocytes and affect their egg morphometric characteristics and the composition of related compartments. Additionally, this study aimed to evaluate whether the quality of energetic reserves for embryo development (fatty acids in yolk's polar and neutral lipids) is influenced by the contamination status of their predecessors. Results revealed correlations between Cu and Hg levels and increased "lobed" erythrocytes, while As and Cu negatively influenced shell thickness. In terms of energy reserves, both polar and neutral lipid fractions contained primarily saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, with prevalent 18:1n-9, 18:0, 16:0, 14:0, and 12:0 fatty acids in yolk samples. The yolk polar fraction was more susceptible to contaminant levels in female sea turtles, showing consistent negative correlations between pollution load index and essential n3 fatty acids, including linolenic, eicosatrienoic, eicosapentaenoic, and docosapentaenoic acids, crucial for embryonic development. These metals accumulation, coupled with the reduced availability of these key fatty acids, may disrupt the eicosanoid and other important pathways, affecting reproductive development. 14. Assessing Nutritional Deficiencies in Bariatric Surgery Patients: A Comparative Study of Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass versus Sleeve Gastrectomy.

Obesity is a worldwide epidemic, and bariatric surgery is considered the primary treatment for long-term weight loss and managing obesity-related health issues. Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) are the most performed procedures. Nutritional deficiencies are a significant concern following bariatric surgery and can have serious consequences. This study aims to compare the incidence of nutritional deficiencies in patients undergoing RYGB and SG. A retrospective analysis was conducted on the nutritional status of 505 consecutive patients who underwent either RYGB or SG between January and December 2019. Data were collected regarding vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin D, calcium, PTH, magnesium, hemoglobin, iron, ferritin, and transferrin at preoperative, 6-month, and 12-month intervals post-surgery. The RYGB group showed significantly higher excess weight loss. Vitamin B12, hemoglobin, and ferritin levels were consistently higher in the SG group throughout the study. Vitamin D deficiency was prevalent, with no significant difference between the groups. Vitamin B12 deficiency was significantly more common in the RYGB group (6 months: 17.46% vs. 4.69%, p < 0.001; 12 months: 16.74% vs. 0.93%, p < 0.001). Despite differences in their mechanisms, bariatric surgeries were associated with nutritional deficiencies. It is crucial to efficiently assess, prevent, and manage these deficiencies tailored to each surgical procedure.

The treatment of hypertensive patients with losartan is very common. Despite the reduction in blood pressure, its effects on cardiac contractility and sympathetic autonomic drive are still controversial. In turn, aerobic physical training (APT) also presents an important therapeutic option, providing significant improvements in cardiovascular autonomic control, however little is known about its effects on cardiac contractility, especially when associated with losartan. Therefore, we investigated in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) the effects of losartan and APT on cardiac hemodynamics and functionality, with emphasis on autonomic tonic balance and cardiac contractility. Sixty-four SHR (18 weeks old) were divided into four groups (N = 16): vehicle; vehicle submitted to APT through swimming for 12 weeks; treated with losartan (5 mg·kg
-1 ·d- 1 ) for 12 weeks; and treated with losartan associated with APT. The groups were submitted to cardiac morphological and functional analysis by echocardiography; double blockade of cardiac autonomic receptors with atropine and propranolol; and coronary bed reactivity and left ventricular contractility analyses by the Langendorff technique. APT improved functional parameters and autonomic balance by reducing sympathetic drive and/or increasing vagal drive. In contrast, it promoted a concentric remodeling of the left ventricle (LV). Treatment with losartan reduced sympathetic autonomic drive and cardiac morphological parameters, but there were no significant gains in cardiac functionality and contractility. When combined, the concentric remodeling of the LV to APT was abolished and gains in cardiac functionality and contractility were observed. Our findings suggest that the effects of losartan and APT are complementary and should be applied together in the treatment of hypertension. In spontaneously hypertensive rats, the combination of aerobic physical training with losartan treatment was crucial to greater blood pressure reductions and an increase in left ventricular contractility. 16. Dietary contribution of iron from limestone and dicalcium phosphate for broiler chickens.

Iron is routinely supplemented in broiler feeds aiming to prevent dietary deficiencies. Limestone and phosphates are very rich in Fe; however, its contribution from these sources have not been thoroughly investigated with chickens. The present research was conducted to evaluate live performance and blood parameters of broilers when using limestone and dicalcium phosphate as sources of Fe. A total of 576 one-day-old male Cobb x Cobb 500 were allocated into a total of 72 battery cages, 6 treatments with 12 replication cages of 8 chicks at placement. Chicks were fed diets formulated with corn, soybean meal (SBM) with laboratory grade calcium carbonate and phosphoric acid (having traces of Fe). All chicks were fed a common prestarter without Fe supplementation (analyzed total 58.2 ± 2.4 mg/kg Fe) from placement to 7 d. Allocation of birds to dietary treatments was completely randomized on day 8. Treatments had increasing Fe derived from commercial limestone and dicalcium phosphate (analyzed Fe 7,218 and 4,783 mg/kg, respectively) progressively replacing calcium carbonate and phosphoric acid to provide graded increases in total Fe (analyzed Fe in the feeds were 57.6 ± 2.1, 92.0 ± 2.3, 124.1 ± 2.7, 159.3 ± 3.1, 187.2 ± 3.2, 223.7 ± 3.6 mg/kg, respectively). There were no effects of dietary Fe on live performance, hematocrit, and hemoglobin the end of the study on day 28 (P > 0.05). Increasing dietary Fe from commercial limestone and dicalcium phosphate led to a linear reduction in the percent ileal digestible Fe. However, linear increments in Fe retention, serum ferritin and liver Fe occurred when compared to feeds without Fe derived from limestone and phosphate dicalcium. It is concluded that Fe from limestone and dicalcium phosphate can be partially utilized by broiler chickens. It was estimated that the Fe retained from limestone and dicalcium phosphate is of 1.9%. 17. PsyCog: A computerised mini battery for assessing cognition in psychosis.

- Abstract
Despite the functional impact of cognitive deficit in people with psychosis, objective cognitive assessment is not typically part of routine clinical care. This is partly due to the length of traditional assessments and the need for a highly trained administrator. Brief, automated computerised assessments could help to address this issue. We present data from an evaluation of PsyCog, a computerised, non-verbal, mini battery of cognitive tests. Healthy Control (HC) ( N = 135), Clinical High Risk (CHR) ( N = 233), and First Episode Psychosis (FEP) ( N = 301) participants from a multi-centre prospective study were assessed at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. PsyCog was used to assess cognitive performance at baseline and at up to two follow-up timepoints. Mean total testing time was 35.95 min (SD = 2.87). Relative to HCs, effect sizes of performance impairments were medium to large in FEP patients (composite score G = 1.21, subtest range = 0.52-0.88) and small to medium in CHR patients (composite score G = 0.59, subtest range = 0.18-0.49). Site effects were minimal, and test-retest reliability of the PsyCog composite was good (ICC = 0.82-0.89), though some practice effects and differences in data completion between groups were found. The present implementation of PsyCog shows it to be a useful tool for assessing cognitive function in people with psychosis. Computerised cognitive assessments have the potential to facilitate the evaluation of cognition in psychosis in both research and in clinical care, though caution should still be taken in terms of implementation and study design., Competing Interests: The following conflicts of interest are declared: Robert A. 18. Green and Hawksbill Sea turtles of Eastern Atlantic: New insights into a globally important rookery in the Gulf of Guinea.

Sea turtles are critical components of marine ecosystems, and their conservation is important for Ocean Governance and Global Planet Health. However, there is limited knowledge of their ecology in the Gulf of Guinea. To fill this knowledge gap, this study presents the first integrative assessment of green and hawksbill turtles in the region, combining nesting surveys over 9 years and telemetry data, to offer insights into these population dynamics, and behaviours, including nesting preferences, morphological and reproductive parameters, diving patterns and inter-nesting core-use areas. Both green and hawksbill turtles are likely making a recovery on São Tomé, potentially driven by sustained conservation efforts. There are preliminary indications of recovery, but we interpret this cautiously. Coupled with satellite tracking, this study estimated that 482 to 736 green turtles and 135 to 217 hawksbills nest on the beaches of São Tomé. Their movements overlap significantly with a proposed Marine Protected Area (MPA), which suggests they may be well placed for conservation if managed appropriately. However, the presence of artisanal fisheries and emerging threats, such as sand mining and unregulated tourism, highlight the urgent need for robust management strategies that align global conservation objectives with local socioeconomic realities. This study significantly enhances our understanding of the ecology and conservation needs of the green and hawksbill turtles in the Gulf of Guinea.
