Introduction: Dental impressions and casts play a critical role in dental care, facilitating diagnoses and the fabrication of prostheses. Traditional methods of fabrication involve elastomeric materials that are more prone to errors and patient discomfort. Digital advancements offer promising alternatives, yet their accuracy and applicability to military dentistry remain under-explored. This study evaluates the accuracy of digital casts produced with material available in the Military Health System compared to conventional methods., Materials and Methods: Using a digital (n = 10) and analog (n = 10) methodology casts were fabricated from a reference cast (n = 1). The reference and cast samples were scanned with a reference scanner to generate stereolithography files. These files were used to generate full arch, single crown, fixed dental prosthesis, and inlay digital casts which were then compared using a three-dimensional (3D) comparison software to evaluate accuracy. Root mean square values were obtained, giving a quantitative evaluation of the deviation of each sample from the reference cast. Statistical analysis consisted of a Shapiro-Wilk and Levene test to account for homogeneity of variances in each group. An ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test were used to determine differences in accuracy among the full arch and a two-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test evaluated differences in trueness among the casts of the individual preparations., Results: Analog full arch casts had an average root mean square of 106 ±19.18 µm when examining trueness and 12 ±2.58 µm for precision. Digital full arch casts had an average root mean square of 51.9 ±5.39 µm when examining trueness and 4.2 ±1.57 µm for precision. Overall digital casts surpassed analog counterparts in accuracy. Fixed dental prostheses were found to be the only group, which showed no statistically significant difference between digital and analog., Conclusion: These findings validate the potential of digital workflows in enhancing the speed and accuracy of dental care in the Military Health System, while underscoring the need for further exploration and refinement in specific clinical contexts., (© The Association of Military Surgeons of the United States 2024. Deformed wing virus (DWV) has long been identified as a critical pathogen affecting honeybees, contributing to colony losses through wing deformities, neurological impairments, and reduced lifespan. Since DWV also affects other pollinators, it poses a significant threat to global pollination networks. While honeybees have been the focal point of DWV studies, emerging research indicates that this RNA virus is not host-specific but rather a generalist pathogen capable of infecting a wide range of insect species, including other bee species such as bumblebees and solitary bees, as well as wasps and ants. This expands the potential impact of DWV beyond honeybees to broader ecological communities. The black imported fire ant, Solenopsis richteri, is an economically important invasive ant species. In this study, we describe deformed wing (DW) symptoms in S. richteri. DW alates were found in three of nine (33%) laboratory colonies. The symptoms ranged from severely twisted wings to a single crumpled wing tip. Additionally, numerous symptomatic alates also displayed altered mobility, ranging from an ataxic gait to an inability to walk. Viral replication of DWV was confirmed using a modified strand-specific RT-PCR. Our results suggest that S. richteri can be an alternative host for DWV, expanding our understanding of DWV as a generalist pathogen in insects. However, additional research is required to determine whether DWV is the etiological agent responsible for DW syndrome in S. richteri. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The people who inject drugs (PWID) are attributed to high-risk groups for transmission of the Hepatitis C virus (HCV). This study assessed the prevalence and associated factors of current HCV infection (CHI) among U.S. general population and PWID of ages between 20 and 59 years old. Methods: This study utilized cross-sectional data from the 2009–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, conducting separate analyses for the U.S. general population, including PWID and non-PWID, as well as specific analyses focusing solely on PWID. The analytical methods included the estimation of CHI prevalence, Rao-Scott chi-square test to compare CHI-positive and CHI-negative groups, and univariate and multivariable logistic regressions models to evaluate the associated risk factors of CHI. Results: The prevalence of CHI among general population and PWID were 1% and 19%, respectively. Compared to non-PWID, the odds of CHI were significantly higher among PWID (OR = 32.6, 95% CI = 17.7–60.3) in general population. Among PWID, male vs. female (OR = 2.6, 95% CI = 1.1–5.9), adults aged 40–59 vs. 20–39 years old (OR = 2.9, 95% CI = 1.2–7.3), Non-Hispanic Black vs. White (OR = 4.6, 95% CI = 1.5–13.6), with high school diploma or less educational attainment vs. above college degree (OR = 3.5, 95% CI = 1.4–9.2) showed higher odds of having CHI. Conclusion: The prevalence of CHI was found to be higher among PWID especially those who were male, aged 40–59 years old, Non-Hispanic Black, and had lower educational attainment. Background: Fatigue is a common complication of stroke that has a significant impact on quality of life. The biological mechanisms that underly post-stroke fatigue are currently unclear, however, reactivation of latent viruses and their impact on systemic immune function have been increasingly reported in other conditions where fatigue is a predominant symptom. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in particular has been associated with fatigue, including in long-COVID and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, but has not yet been explored within the context of stroke. Aims: We performed an exploratory analysis to determine if there is evidence of a relationship between EBV reactivation and post-stroke fatigue. Methods: In a chronic ischemic stroke cohort (> 5 months post-stroke), we assayed circulating EBV by qPCR and measured the titres of anti-EBV antibodies by ELISA in patients with high fatigue (FACIT-F < 40) and low fatigue (FACIT-F > 41). Statistical analysis between two-groups were performed by t-test when normally distributed according to the Shapiro-Wilk test, by Mann-Whitney test when the data was not normally distributed, and by Fisher's exact test for categorical data. Results: We observed a similar incidence of viral reactivation between people with low versus high levels of post-stroke fatigue (5 of 22 participants (24%) versus 6 of 22 participants (27%)). Although the amount of circulating EBV was similar, we observed an altered circulating anti-EBV antibody profile in participants with high fatigue, with reduced IgM against the Viral Capsid Antigen (2.244 ± 0.926 vs. 3.334 ± 2.68; P = 0.031). Total IgM levels were not different between groups indicating this effect was specific to anti-EBV antibodies (3.23 × 105 ± 4.44 × 104 high fatigue versus 4.60 × 105 ± 9.28 × 104 low fatigue; P = 0.288). Conclusions: These data indicate that EBV is not more prone to reactivation during chronic stroke recovery in those with post-stroke fatigue. However, the dysregulated antibody response to EBV may be suggestive of viral reactivation at an earlier stage after stroke. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This quantitative survey-based study examines 366 Czech and 532 Turkish preschool teachers' compassion levels and psychological well-being. The Adult Compassion Scale and Psychological Well-being Scale were used as the data-collection tools, and Mann-Whitney U testing and Kruskal Wallis-H testing were used for data analysis. Although Turkish preschool teachers' compassion levels were found to be higher than Czech participants, the Turkish preschool teachers' psychological well-being was lower. While participants' compassion did not differ significantly across gender, parent/non-parent status, or the presence/absence of children with special needs in their classrooms, significant differences were associated with age, seniority, personal education level, marital status, age group of children taught, class size, and faith. While psychological well-being did not differ significantly across presence/absence of special-needs children, seniority, personal education level, age group of children taught, or faith, there were significant differences across gender, age, parenthood, marital status and class size. There was also a positive and moderately significant relationship between the preschool teachers' compassion and their psychological well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area in China, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its large-scale, diverse, intricately structured, and brightly colored surface travertine landscapes. However, severe degradation of the Huanglong travertine formations, such as blackening and algae erosion, has occurred in recent years, necessitating monitoring and identification. We collected hyperspectral reflectance data of the travertine formations in different states and bare ground using a ground-based hyperspectral radiometer (PSR-2500) from ASD company. After conducting a correlation analysis between the hyperspectral reflectance data and the travertine formations, we identified healthy travertine formations, blackened travertine formations, travertine formations affected by algae erosion, and bare ground. The Siamese network method was employed to generate data labels, and the spectral features of the travertine formations were extracted by combining the sensitive bands with pre-processed and reduced data. The PSO-BPNN classifier was developed by optimizing the back propagation neural network (BPNN) using the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO). To verify the effectiveness of PSOBPNN in accurately distinguishing different states of travertine formations, we compared its performance with that of BPNN using three performance indices. Finally, the proposed method was applied to the real-world hyperspectral image data collected by the Micro-Hyperspectral imaging instrument to classify the travertine formations in different states and bare ground. The test set demonstrated good overall performance, with an average overall accuracy (OA) of 0.93, F1-score of 0.92, and Kappa coefficient of 0.97. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Melatonin (MLT), a main product of pineal gland, recently has attracted the attention of scientists due to its benefits in various diseases and also regulation of cellular homeostasis. Its receptor scares widely distributed indicating that it influences numerous organs. Programmed cell death (PCD), of which there several types, is a regulated by highly conserved mechanisms and important for development and function of different organs. Enhancement or inhibition of PCDs could be a useful technique for treatment of different diseases and MLT, due to its direct effects on these pathways, is a good candidate for this strategy. Many studies investigated the role of MLT on PCDs in different diseases and in this review, we summarized some of the most significant studies in this field to provide a better insight into the mechanisms of modulation of PCD by MLT modulation., (© 2024. Akabane virus (AKAV), Aino virus, Peaton virus, Sathuperi virus, and Shamonda virus are arthropod-borne viruses belonging to the order Elliovirales, family Peribunyaviridae, genus Orthobunyavirus. These viruses cause or may cause congenital malformations in ruminants, including hydranencephaly, poliomyelitis, and arthrogryposis, although their pathogenicity may vary among field cases. AKAV may cause relatively severe congenital lesions such as hydranencephaly in calves. Furthermore, strains of AKAV genogroups I and II exhibit different disease courses. Genogroup I strains predominantly cause postnatal viral encephalomyelitis, while genogroup II strains are primarily detected in cases of congenital malformation. However, the biological properties of AKAV and other orthobunyaviruses are insufficiently investigated in hosts in the field and in vitro. Here, we used an immortalized bovine brain cell line (FBBC-1) to investigate viral replication efficiency, cytopathogenicity, and host innate immune responses. AKAV genogroup II and Shamonda virus replicated to higher titers in FBBC-1 cells compared with the other viruses, and only AKAV caused cytopathic effects. These results may be associated with the severe congenital lesions in the brain caused by AKAV genogroup II. AKAV genogroup II strains replicated to higher titers in FBBC-1 cells than AKAV genogroup I strains, suggesting that genogroup II strains replicated more efficiently in fetal brain cells, accounting for the detection of the latter strains mainly in fetal infection cases. Therefore, FBBC-1 cells may serve as a valuable tool for investigating the virulence and tropism of the orthobunyaviruses for bovine neonatal brain tissues in vitro., (© 2024. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging has witnessed a transformative shift with the integration of parametric mapping techniques, such as T1 and T2 mapping and extracellular volume fraction. These techniques play a crucial role in advancing our understanding of cardiac function and structure, providing unique insights into myocardial tissue properties. Native T1 mapping is particularly valuable, correlating with histopathological fibrosis and serving as a marker for various cardiac pathologies. Extracellular volume fraction, an early indicator of myocardial remodeling, predicts adverse outcomes in heart failure. Elevated T2 relaxation time in cardiac MRI indicates myocardial edema, enabling noninvasive and early detection in conditions like myocarditis. These techniques offer precise insights into myocardial properties, enhancing the accuracy of diagnosis and prognosis across a spectrum of cardiac conditions, including myocardial infarction, autoimmune diseases, myocarditis, and sarcoidosis. Most enveloped viruses encode viral fusion proteins to penetrate host cell by membrane fusion. Interestingly, many enveloped viruses can also use viral fusion proteins to induce cell-cell fusion, both in vitro and in vivo, leading to the formation of syncytia or multinucleated giant cells (MGCs). In addition, some non-enveloped viruses encode specialized viral proteins that induce cell-cell fusion to facilitate viral spread. Overall, viruses that can induce cell-cell fusion are nearly ubiquitous in mammals. Virus cell-to-cell spread by inducing cell-cell fusion may overcome entry and post-entry blocks in target cells and allow evasion of neutralizing antibodies.
