In addition to water repellency, superhydrophobic leaves of plants such as Salvinia molesta adsorb oil and separate it from water surfaces. This phenomenon has been the inspiration for a new method of oil–water separation, the bionic oil adsorber (BOA). In this paper, we show how the biological effect can be abstracted and transferred to technical textiles, in this case knitted spacer textiles hydrophobized with a layered silicate, oriented at the biology push approach. Subsequently, the transport of the oil within the bio-inspired textile is analyzed by a three-dimensional fluid simulation. This fluid simulation shows that the textile can be optimized by reducing the pile yarn length, increasing the pile yarn spacing, and increasing the pile yarn diameter. For the first time, it has been possible with this simulation to optimize the bio-inspired textile with regard to oil transport with little effort and thus enable the successful implementation of a self-driven and sustainable oil removal method. Recently, due to its flexibility and ease of integration into wearable electronics, interest in fiber‐shaped batteries (FSBs) is burgeoning. While there is much research focused on improving the electrochemical performance of FSBs, little work is done to evaluate the safety and comfort of integrated FSBs for wearable electronics, which will significantly hinder the further development of high‐performance FSBs and their commercialization. In this review, the design, integration, and evaluation of FSBs incorporated in common textiles are fully discussed. Traditional textile characterization techniques and modern methods to evaluate its durability are also summarized. Several organizations have outlined the need for standardized methods for conducting physical fit comparisons. This study answers this call by developing and evaluating a systematic and transparent approach for examining, documenting, and interpreting textile physical fits, using qualitative feature descriptors and a quantitative metric (Edge Similarity Score, ESS) for the physical fit examination of textile materials. Here, the results from 1027 textile physical fit comparisons are reported. This includes the evaluation of inter and intraanalyst variation when using this method for hand‐torn and stabbed fabrics. ESS higher than 80% and ESS lower than 20%, respectively, support fit and nonfit conclusions. The results show that analyst accuracy ranges from 88% to 100% when using this criterion. The estimated false‐positive rate for this dataset (2% false positives, 10 of 477 true nonfit pairs) demonstrates the importance of assessing the quality of a physical fit during an examination and reveals that potential errors are low, but possible in textile physical fit examinations. The risk of error must be accounted for in the interpretation and verification processes. Further analysis shows that factors such as the separation method, construction, and design of the samples do not substantially influence the ESS values. Additionally, the proposed method is independently evaluated by 15 practitioners in an interlaboratory exercise that demonstrates satisfactory reproducibility between participants. The standardized terminology and documentation criteria are the first steps toward validating approaches to streamline the peer review process, minimize bias and subjectivity, and convey the probative value of the evidence. In addition to the functionality of electronic textiles (e-textiles), their aesthetic properties should be considered to expand their marketability. In this study, premordanted cotton fabrics were co-dyed with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and natural dyes to develop ecofriendly and colorful graphene-based wearable e-textiles. The color attributes of the textiles were analyzed in terms of the dyeing conditions, namely, rGO loading, mordant type, and natural dye type. The lightness of the dyed samples increased in the order of cochineal < gardenia blue < rhubarb. Regardless of the natural dye and rGO loading, the lightness of the fabrics mordanted with Fe was lower than that with Al and Cu. Moreover, the rhubarb- and gardenia blue-dyed fabrics exhibited broad chroma and hue dispersions, indicating the strong impact of the dyeing conditions. With increasing rGO loading, the chroma of the rhubarb-dyed fabrics substantially decreased, resulting in decreased color saturation. The initial greenish-blue color of the gardenia blue-dyed fabrics gradually changed to yellowish-green and then yellow. Regardless of the natural dye, drastic overall color changes were observed, with average values of 7.60, 11.14, 12.68, and 13.56 ΔECMC(2:1) at increasing rGO loadings of 1, 3, 5, and 7% owb, respectively. Textiles that intelligently respond to changes in the environment by reversibly providing dramatic changes in structure for comfort, safety, or appearance are widely sought. In order to facilitate applications development, here novel intelligent textile structures are described and developed by using polymer artificial muscles and examples of structures and mechanisms are provided that can be used in the future. These actuating textiles, which deploy a host of muscle yarn and fiber types, can change their porosity with or without any change in fabric lateral dimension or can change their loft or can either bend or fold upon temperature change. The presented intelligent textiles provide a porosity increase up to 38.3% from room temperature to 40 °C, while they exhibit a decrease in porosity up to 26.1% from room temperature to −5 °C. Textiles that can bend at an angle of 60° at 40 °C, while exhibiting a complete roll‐up at 70 °C, are also presented. An important way to change the direction of actuation produced by environmental exposure is to transition from homochiral fibers to heterochiral fibers. The availability of information as to the inner structures and condition of historically significant textiles and clothing items is essential for monitoring, preservation and restoration processes. Visual inspection is usually the initial step in identifying any damage, such as tearing or rotting, but it is not sufficient for examining of detail below the surface of the objects. Radiography Testing (RT) is a useful non-destructive approach, capable of revealing hidden damage to under-sewing layers, clothing design, and connections, providing crucial information for developing a conservation plan. However, due to the mainly low atomic number of the constituting elements of textile material and also the low thickness of such items, X-ray radiographs suffer from low imaging contrast, which is further compromised by noise due to the unavoidable detection of scattered X-rays, which introduces fogginess in the acquired radiographs. Using digital RT images as a starting point, two image processing approaches using histogram equalization and the more complex Automatic Color Enhancement (ACE) methods were applied to enhance the imaging contrast of the original radiographs. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of these methods in better identifying defects, hidden designs, motifs, and destructive regions within the inner layers of textiles. It was found that the ACE method produced better outcomes than the simpler histogram equalization approach. Results indicated that the ACE processed image could be favored over the simpler histogram equalization approach by its enhanced capability of targeted expansion of the scale for evaluation of deterioration. The textile department at the Yorkshire College of Science was opened in 1875 and absorbed into the University of Leeds in 1904. Thereafter it was transformed from a well-equipped centre for technical education, meeting local industrial needs, to an applied science department of high academic achievement, and international renown, with a graduate employment record which was both successful and diverse. Throughout, it received the generous support of the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers. The transformation, which was neither straightforward nor painless, required a strategic response to each of three questions by three successive generations of university managers, as follows. Firstly, can a technical curriculum be sustained in a university setting? Secondly, can the study of textiles be redefined as an applied science? Thirdly, can other disciplines be included to provide broader insights? By considering the responses, this article explores the manner in which social relationships, academic behaviour, industrial practice, and industrial change interacted to shape the curriculum and the research agenda, during an era of large-scale textile production in the UK. Textiles can be promising next‐generation wearable thermal management systems by exhibiting tunable infrared emissivity for dual‐mode control of cooling/warming, yet textiles often exhibit constant infrared emission. Herein, a dynamic thermoregulatory textile is woven from scalable‐manufactured radiative electrochromic fibers and is easily driven by a low voltage in a manner that results in a modulated emissivity of Δɛ≈0.35. Through a synergistic combination of the spiral outer electrode and electrochemically tunable carbon nanotube layer, excellent electrochemical controllability of the fibers is achieved over 100‐m length within 5s because of the decreased internal resistance with increasing length. As a result, the thermoregulatory textile suppresses substantial temperature variation and ensures excellent temperature regulation within ≈1.6 °C for simulated skin (much better than that of traditional textiles: ≈2.9 °C) under an ambient temperature fluctuation of 11.2 °C. The polar bear and several other Arctic mammals use fur composed of hollow-core fibers to survive in extremely cold environments. Here, we use finite element analysis to elucidate the role that the hollow core plays in regulating thermal transport. Specifically, we establish a three-dimensional model of a textile based on fibers with various core diameters and study transverse heat transport. First, these simulations revealed that textiles based on hollow-core fibers conduct significantly less heat than their solid-core counterparts with fibers with a core-to-fiber diameter ratio of 0.95, reducing thermal transport by 33%. In addition to this decrease in thermal transport, the mass per area of textiles is substantially reduced by making them hollow core. This led us to consider the performance of multi-layer textiles and to find that four-layer hollow-core textiles can exhibit a four-fold decrease in heat flux relative to single-layer solid-core textiles with the same mass per area. Taken together, these simulations show that hollow-core fibers are well suited for thermal insulation applications in which gravimetric thermal insulation is a priority. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Textile production is a major component of the global industry, with sales of over USD 450 billion and estimations of an 84% increase in their demand in the next 20 years. In recent decades, protective and smart textiles have played important roles in the social economy and attracted widespread popularity thanks to their wide spectrum of applications with properties, such as antimicrobial, water-repellent, UV, chemical, and thermal protection. Towards the sustainable manufacturing of smart textiles, biodegradable, recycled, and bio-based plastics are used as alternative raw materials for fabric and yarn production using a wide variety of techniques. While conventional techniques present several drawbacks, nanofibers produced through electrospinning have superior structural properties. Electrospinning is an innovative method for fiber production based on the use of electrostatic force to create charged threads of polymer solutions. Electrospinning shows great potential since it provides control of the size, porosity, and mechanical resistance of the fibers. This review summarizes the advances in the rapidly evolving field of the production of nanofibers for application in smart and protective textiles using electrospinning and environmentally friendly polymers as raw materials, and provides research directions for optimized smart fibers in the future. Materials with contrary wettability have various functions and applications. Common methods such as chemical modification and secondary treatment with solid mask to achieve relevant wettability either have harmful additives or construct fixed shape. Herein, liquid is introduced as a plasma mask for constructing arbitrary area with contrary wettability on hydrophobic textiles. In atmospheric plasma working region, exposed area of textiles achieves hydrophilic while liquid shielding area maintains the original wettability. Water–ethanol mixtures with a broad range of surface tension are chosen as template liquid to meet most hydrophobic textiles with the property of erasable evaporation without residue. Liquid mask with fluidity can be drawn in any shape at any time, meanwhile, plasma treatment highlights the merit of no chemical additive. Higher resolution will be achieved when the operation process is further refined. E-textiles have been the focus of interest in health technology, but little research has been done so far on how they could support persons with complex communication needs. A global estimate is that 97 million people may benefit from Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Unfortunately, despite the growing body of research, many persons with complex communication needs are left without functional means to communicate. This study aimed to address the lack of research in textile-based AAC and to build a picture of the issues that affect novel textile-based technology development. We arranged a focus group study for altogether 12 speech and language therapists to elicit user scenarios to understand needs, activities, and contexts when implementing a novel, textile-based technology in a user-centred approach. As a result, we present six user scenarios that were created for children to enhance their social interaction in everyday life when using textile-based technology that recognizes touch or detects motion. The persistent availability and the individual design to meet a person's capability along with ease of use and personalization were perceived important requirements. Through these scenarios, we identified technological constraints regarding the development of e-textile technology and its use in the AAC field, such as issues regarding sensors and providing power supply. Resolving the design constraints will lead to a feasible and portable e-textile AAC system. E-textiles are a novel approach to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for children with motor dysfunctions and intellectual disabilities. -A portable AAC system implementing e-textiles for children with complex communication needs will enable several activities in daily-life situations. Therefore, further research is needed to resolve the design constraints to reduce the bulkiness of technology embedded in textiles, e.g., looking into the possibilities of passive and battery-free solutions. The developed user scenarios offer a starting point for developing initial prototypes for touch-based and motion-detection systems to enhance social interaction and motivation for persons with complex communication needs. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure is one of the most important risk factor among workers. it may stimulate health outcomes such as multiple skin injuries and blinding eye diseases. So, UV protection is mainly important for people who expose to it. Modification of cotton textiles by nanomaterials is a new approach to overcome this problem. So, the aim of this study is to review studies conducted on using ZnO nanoparticles for improving ultraviolet protection of cotton textiles. The search strategy was provided by cochrane guideline. 45 studies were regarded as appropriate. The results show that UPF for textiles has improved by coated ZnO. However, UPF was depended on the physicochemical characteristics of ZnO and textiles such as yarn structure, effect of woven fabric construction, fabric porosity, and impurity of textiles and laundering conditions. Textile dyeing and weaving of traditional longyi garments have traditionally occurred in the Amarapura township of Mandalay, Myanmar, since 1822, transitioning from natural to chemical dyes in the early 1900s. With no current wastewater treatment facilities in Mandalay, dye effluents mix with other wastewaters in unlined canals dug near people's homes and discharge into the local canals and groundwater. Because locals rely heavily on dug and tube wells for drinking, bathing, and cooking, this industry poses a major health hazard to the people in this region. The objective of this study was to identify the previously unknown composition of the textile dyes, as well as identify and quantify the concentrations of major ions and heavy metals found in dye effluents, and determine their impact on the local groundwater resources. Powdered dye samples from each stage of the dyeing process were characterized by the combination of heavy metals used to create these color dyes. Groundwater and surface water were also sampled. Results of analysis of the dye and water samples indicated that most of the heavy metals discharge into the groundwater environment. Textile dyeing is a major source of pollution and a health hazard to the residents of Amarapura township; however, the locals are not readily connecting dye practices to the issues with their drinking water. This study provides information on groundwater composition near dyeing industries in Amarapura township that may help inform further monitoring strategies and communicate the health risks of exposure to heavy metals for local people. Polyethylene terephthalate PET is commonly used in textiles and apparel automotive interior and other fields due to its excellent properties such as high strength and chemical stability. With the rapid development and expansion of polyester textiles the accumulation of waste polyester textiles is also increasing year by year. However the waste polyester textiles are difficult to be degraded naturally posing a significant environmental threat. Recycling waste PET textiles is therefore crucial. Previous studies have identified two main methods for recycling waste polyester textiles the physical method and the chemical method. The physical method involves regenerating the textiles through simple melting and granulation but this method does not produce recycled products with good quality and stable performance. The chemical method involves using a depolymerising agent to break down waste polyester textiles into small molecules. These molecules are then polymerized to create a recycled polyester product. This process is a crucial method for producing highquality recycled polyester products. Currently chemical methods primarily consist of hydrolysis alcoholysis and enzymatic hydrolysis. Among them the glycol alcoholysis-methanol ester exchange method has gained popularity due to its mild reaction conditions. However it suffers from low product yield and the formation of oligomers during the alcoholysis stage. Additionally the ester exchange stage requires a complex product purification process. Current research is focused on addressing these issues. To address the issues of low product yields and increased oligomers in the glycolysis-methanol ester exchange process this study suggested the use of K2 CO3 / KOH synergistic alcoholysis on discarded polyester textiles. Firstly the inexpensive potassium carbonate was used as the primary catalyst in the alcoholysis stage. KOH was also introduced to co-polymerize the waste polyester textiles. Secondly the response surface method was employed to optimize the process parameters in the alcoholysis stage resulting in the identification of the optimal process parameters. Finally the purification method was optimized in the ester-exchange stage based on the phase transition property of DMT leading to the preparation of highpurity regenerated DMT. This paper introduced the use of KOH in the alcoholysis stage to co-polymerize waste polyester textiles. This reduced the oligomer content in the alcoholysis products and increased the BHET yield. In the ester exchange stage a simple decompression sublimation method was used to purify the regenerated DMT. The purification process was also optimized. The experimental results indicate that the K2 CO3 / KOH synergistic alcoholysis of waste polyester textiles primarily produced BHET. The regenerated BHET yield demonstrated an increasing trend with the addition of KOH peaking at 70. 2% when the KOH addition reached 2%. The process parameters of the alcoholysis stage were optimized by using response surface methodology. The optimal conditions were determined to be a reaction temperature of 210 ℃ a reaction time of 120 minutes K2 CO3 content of 2. 0% and KOH content of 2. 4%. These conditions resulted in a regenerated BHET yield of 73. 1%. The regenerated DMT achieved a purity of over 99% after undergoing purification through decompression sublimation during the ester exchange stage. Efficient purification of the regenerated DMT was achieved. To enhance the reaction efficiency and product yield of waste polyester textiles a cost-effective and viable method is the synergistic depolymerization of waste polyester textiles with K2 CO3 / KOH to prepare regenerated DMT. The research provides valuable reference for the environmentally friendly recycling of waste polyester textiles and lays a foundation for producing high-quality regenerated polyester downstream. In recent years, the use of natural flax fibres as a reinforcement in composite building structures has witnessed a growing interest amongst research communities due to their green, economical, and capable mechanical properties. Most of the previous investigations on the load-bearing behaviour of concrete components reinforced with natural flax fibres include inorganic impregnations (or even no impregnation) and exclude the use of textile fabrics. Also, the mechanical behaviour of textiles made of natural flax fibres produced as leno fabrics remains to be investigated. In this paper, the results of tensile tests on concrete components reinforced with bio-based impregnated leno fabrics are presented. For comparison, multilayer non-impregnated and impregnated textiles were considered. The results demonstrated that reinforced textiles yielded an increase in the failure loads compared to the concrete cross-sections without reinforcement. The stress-strain diagrams showed that the curves can be divided into three sections, which are typical for reinforced tensile test specimens. For the impregnated textiles, a narrowly distributed crack pattern was observed. The results showed that impregnated textiles tend to support higher failure stresses with less strains than non-impregnated textiles. Moreover, an increase in the reinforcement ratio alongside larger opening widths of the warp yarns enables higher failure loads. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interwoven Sound Spaces is an interdisciplinary project which brought together telematic music performance, interactive textiles, interaction design, and artistic research. A team of researchers collaborated with two professional contemporary music ensembles based in Berlin, Germany, and Piteå, Sweden, and four composers, with the aim of creating a telematic distributed concert taking place simultaneously in two concert halls and online. Central to the project was the development of interactive textiles capable of sensing the musicians’ movements while playing acoustic instruments, and generating data the composers used in their works. Musicians, instruments, textiles, sounds, halls, and data formed a network of entities and agencies that was reconfigured for each piece, showing how networked music practice enables distinctive musicking techniques. We describe each part of the project and report on a research interview conducted with one of the composers for the purpose of analysing the creative approaches she adopted for composing her piece. The exhibition showcases textile designs from ten Indigenous community art centers across Australia's North East to North West regions. In fabric-cement composites, the limited impregnation of cementitious matrix products due to thick and twisted yarns leads to premature failure due to poor bonding strength. In addition, cellulosic textile reinforcements have many challenges about durability, appearance of voids at mortar-fiber interface, and rise of microcracks. Textile performances were evaluated in different conditions: coated with micro-silica powder, pretreated, and without any treatment. This study also assessed how textile weave structure and yarn geometry configuration affect the interactions of two different jute textiles (Close Weave Jute Fabric – CJF and Open Weave Jute Fabric - OJT) when used as reinforcement in mortar matrix. Textile characterization and composite analysis (by four-point bending tests, SEM/EDS, and physical tests) were conducted to assess the different textile reinforcements, the mechanical behavior of produced composites, and visual and chemical compounds analysis of the interfacial transition zone between textile and mortar matrix after silica coating. Micro silica powder coating was deemed necessary to address limited impregnation and to avoid telescope pull-off. Weave structure determined the difference between jute fabrics to reinforce mortar matrix, being only OJF (larger interstices in the weave structure) with micro silica coating allowed a better matrix interaction and stood out from the other textiles and achieved the best specific energy of all samples, (4.28 ± 0.91) kJ.m-2. Calcium and silicon inside the yarn interstices and textile-matrix interface indicate the formation of strong bonds by calcium-silicate-hydrate products. Thermal protective textiles are crucial for safeguarding individuals, particularly firefighters and steelworkers, against extreme heat, and for preventing burn injuries. However, traditional firefighting gear suffers from statically fixed thermal insulation properties, potentially resulting in overheating and discomfort in moderate conditions, and insufficient protection in extreme fire events. Herein, an innovative soft robotic textile is developed for dynamically adaptive thermal management, providing superior personal protection and thermal comfort across a spectrum of environmental temperatures. This unique textile features a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)‐sealed actuation system, embedded with a low boiling point fluid for reversible phase transition, resembling an endoskeleton that triggers an expansion within the textile matrix for enhanced air gap and thermal insulation. The thermal resistance improves automatically from 0.23 to 0.48 Km2 W−1 by self‐actuating under intense heat, exceeding conventional textiles by maintaining over 10 °C cooler temperatures. Additionally, the knitted substrate incorporated into the soft actuators can substantially mitigate convective heat transfer, as evidenced by the thermal resistance tests and the temperature mapping derived from numerical simulations. Moreover, it boasts significantly increased moisture permeability. The thermoadaptation and breathability of this durable all‐fabric system signify considerable progress in the development of protective clothing with high comfort for dynamic and extreme temperature conditions. Technological advances and the development of new and advanced materials allow the transition from three-dimensional (3D) printing to the innovation of four-dimensional (4D) printing. 3D printing is the process of precisely creating objects with complex shapes by depositing superimposed layers of material. Current 3D printing technology allows two or more filaments of different polymeric materials to be placed, which, together with the development of intelligent materials that change shape over time or under the action of an external stimulus, allow us to innovate and move toward an emerging area of research, innovative 4D printing technology. 4D printing makes it possible to manufacture actuators and sensors for various technological applications. Its most significant development is currently in the manufacture of intelligent textiles. The potential of 4D printing lies in modular manufacturing, where fabric-printed material interaction enables the creation of bio-inspired and biomimetic devices. The central part of this review summarizes the effect of the primary external stimuli on 4D textile materials, followed by the leading applications. Shape memory polymers attract current and potential opportunities in the textile industry to develop smart clothing for protection against extreme environments, auxiliary prostheses, smart splints or orthoses to assist the muscles in their medical recovery, and comfort devices. The field of electronic textiles currently lacks n‐type polymer fibers that can complement the more established p‐type polymer fibers. Here, a highly conductive n‐type polymer fiber is obtained via wet‐spinning of n‐doped poly(3,7‐dihydrobenzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b']difuran‐2,6‐dione) (n‐PBDF). The electrical conductivity of the fibers increases from 1000 to 1600 S cm−1 with increased draw during processing and correlates well with Young's modulus. Wide‐angle X‐ray scattering reveals the existence of a bimodal orientation of the polymer chains, favoring parallel alignment to the fiber axis with increased draw. After 14 d in 80% humid air, fiber conductivity stabilizes maintaining 81% of the initial conductivity. Although the electrical conductivity drops slightly over time, the Seebeck coefficient increases, resulting in the highest thermoelectric power factor being measured at 91 µW m−1 K−2 for the most drawn fiber 14 d after its fabrication. A proof‐of‐concept two‐couple thermoelectric textile is crafted by embroidering bundles of n‐type PBDF fibers and p‐type PEDOT:PSS fibers. The device generates 2.40 nW at a 22 °C temperature gradient. This work represents the initial steps and a crucial advancement toward fabricating high‐performance n‐type polymer fibers that can complement their p‐type counterparts to close the existing performance gap. The growing technology development and concern with health and hygiene have promoted the development of new functionalized textiles, such as those with antimicrobial properties. Thus, the main objective of this work was to evaluate the antibacterial activity and durability of silver-modified textiles functionalized by two different methods: fiber extrusion (functional fiber) and exhaustion (surface functionality) and the influence of the knitting structure and wash/dry conditions (natural air-drying or drying in the dryer). The antibacterial activity was evaluated according to the JIS L 1902:2008 standards by using the absorption method. For both methods of functionalization, a good antibacterial activity was obtained (100% of growth inhibition). Regarding durability to washing cycles, both methods showed low durability (growth inhibition lower than 50% for samples functionalized by fiber extrusion and lower than 10% for samples functionalized by exhaustion, after 20 wash cycles). Additionally, it was verified that knitting structure and the washing/drying conditions influenced the durability of antibacterial activity. Textiles functionalized by fiber extrusion and after 5 washing/dry flat cycles kept and exhibited 100% of growth inhibition. In general, longer functionalization durability was obtained for extrusion functionalization, knitting structures with higher mass per unit area; and for samples washed and submitted to natural drying. In Mackie Motors v RCI, the High Court and the Court of Appeal dismissed an argument based on the 'relational contract' in a way which recalled its dismissal 20 years earlier in Baird Textiles v Marks and Spencer. It did not seem to have had any effect that after the 2013 'landmark decision' of Leggatt J in Yam Seng v ITC the 'relational contract' has been considered an 'established concept' in a number of High Court decisions. But these decisions have all been received very coolly by the Court of Appeal, and the High Court decision in Mackie Motors may indeed represent an acceptance of the attitude of the Court of Appeal. This note will argue that, if this is the case, it would constitute a regrettable failure to develop the relational contract as a concept of great practical value in cases such as Baird Textiles and Mackie Motors. It would also constitute an even more regrettable failure to use the relational contract to understand good faith and the nature of all contractual obligations along one of the lines set out by Leggatt J in Yam Seng. Textile consumers are now highly concerned about health and environmental safety while choosing commodities. This could be accomplished by using clean and green textile auxiliaries and finishes during textile processing. Essential oils are used mainly in food, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetics and textile industries to impart fragrance and bioactivity. It is useful to develop a deeper understanding of their chemistry and biological properties for value-added applications. The present review focuses on various sources of essential oils and their encapsulation with particular attention to textile applications. Due to their volatile and fragile nature, the essential oils may need some protection layers, such as encapsulation in suitable shell materials, thus allowing sustained release under desirable physiological conditions. The encapsulated essential oils find diverse applications in textiles for aroma, antimicrobial, cosmetic, medical and mosquito-repellent products. • Review of life cycle assessment papers on textile waste management and practices. • In integrated textile waste management systems, reuse should be prioritised. • Longer service life and good use phase practices give lower environmental impacts. • Many variables influence the impact assessment of textiles reuse and recycling. • Data about people attitude towards textiles circularity could support LCA studies. To understand which are the best strategies for textile waste management and to analyse the effects on the environment of applying circular economy practices to textile products, a review of 45 publications where life cycle assessment (LCA) is applied to these topics has been carried out. The separate collection of textiles, followed by reuse and recycling brings relevant environmental benefits, with impacts related to reuse resulting lower than those of recycling. At the opposite, when mixed municipal solid waste is addressed to energy recovery, the textile fraction is the second most impacting on climate change, right after plastics, while for landfill disposal impacts textiles directly follow the more biodegradable fractions. Textiles manufacturing using recycled fibres generally gives lower impacts than using virgin ones, with a few exceptions in some impact categories for cotton and polyester. The circular practices with the lowest impacts are those that ensure the extension of the textiles service life. Another aim of this review is to identify the main variables affecting the life cycle impact assessment (LCIA). These resulted to be the yield and material demand of recycling processes, the use phase variables, the assumptions on virgin production replaced by reuse or recycling, the substitution factor in reuse, and transportation data in business models based on sharing. Thus, in LCA modelling, great attention should be paid to these variables. Future research should address these aspects, to acquire more relevant data, based on industrial-scale processes and on people habits towards the circular economy strategies applied to textiles. Since the mid-eighth century, Shosoin textiles have been continuously handed down in the Shosoin treasure repository of the Todaiji temple, Japan, and the brilliant colors of these ancient textiles have been maintained in good condition thus far. In this study, the chemical stabilities of madders (Rubia akane and R. tinctorum), gromwell (Lithospermum erythrorhizon), and blue indigo dyes remaining in the textiles passed down for more than 1250 years were examined. The dye components remaining in the silk or wool textiles were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with a photodiode array detector. Chromatograms of the extracts from the textiles revealed not only the principal chromophores of the dyes but also 6-hydroxyrubiadin glycosides and shikonin esters in Japanese madder and gromwell, respectively. These results indicated that the chromophore skeletons, glycoside linkages, and ester linkages of the dye components were retained for more than 1250 years after the textiles were stored in the treasure repository. These findings of the chemical stability and the ongoing degradation of ancient natural dyes help in preserving the dye components and slowing down their degradation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rise in the antibiotic resistance of bacteria has increased scientific interest in the study of materials with unique mechanisms of antimicrobial action. This paper presents the results of studies on the antimicrobial activity of carbon materials and textiles decorated with them. A comparative analysis of the bactericidal and fungicidal activities of graphene oxide, electrochemically exfoliated multigraphene, carbon dots, and their combinations was performed. Microbiological studies on reference strains of E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans showed that graphene oxide inhibited growth with up to 98% efficiency. Electrochemically exfoliated multigraphene was less effective (up to 40%). This study found no significant antimicrobial activity of carbon dots and the combination of carbon dots with graphene oxide significantly weakened their effectiveness. However, the combination of electrochemically exfoliated multigraphene and carbon dots exhibits a synergistic effect (up to 76%). A study on the antimicrobial activity of decorated cotton textiles demonstrated the effectiveness of antimicrobial textiles with graphene oxide, electrochemically exfoliated multigraphene, and a combination of carbon dots with electrochemically exfoliated multigraphene. The development of stretchable electronic devices is a critical area of research for wearable electronics, particularly electronic textiles (e-textiles), where electronic devices embedded in clothing need to stretch and bend with the body. While stretchable electronics technologies exist, none have been widely adopted. This work presents a novel and potentially transformative approach to stretchable electronics using a ubiquitous structure: the helix. A strip of flexible circuitry ('e-strip') is twisted to form a helical ribbon, transforming it from flexible to stretchable. A stretchable core—in this case rubber cord—supports the structure, preventing damage from buckling. Existing helical electronics have only extended to stretchable interconnects between circuit modules, and individual components such as printed helical transistors. Fully stretchable circuits have, until now, only been produced in planar form: flat circuits, either using curved geometry to enable them to stretch, or using inherently stretchable elastomer substrates. Helical e-strips can bend along multiple axes, and repeatedly stretch between 30 and 50%, depending on core material and diameter. LED and temperature sensing helical e-strips are demonstrated, along with design rules for helical e-strip fabrication. Frequent public health incidents have sounded the alarm for personal protection, and the massive consumption of petroleum-based personal protective equipment (PPE) has imposed a heavy burden on nature, making the development of efficient and environmentally friendly protective textiles imperative. Hence, with the principle of sustainability and continuous manufacture, a fully bio-based photodynamic nonwoven eco-textile was fabricated by marine renewable resource chitosan and agricultural waste silkworm excrement. Quaternized chitosan was firmly bonded to cotton fibers by the covalent cross-linking of citric acid, and silkworm excrement pigments were attached to the surface of cationic fibers by the plant dyeing method. Remarkably, photodynamic eco-textiles exhibited superior all-weather antimicrobial properties, eliminated 99.99% of MRSA within 15 min under simulated daylight conditions, killed 99% within 30 min under simulated cloudy conditions, and achieved 90% inhibition within 30 min under simulated office light conditions. Photodynamic eco-textiles featured outstanding anti-bacterial durability, maintaining more than 90% anti-bacterial efficiency after the daily simulation of light, washing, and abrasion. Moreover, photodynamic eco-textiles possessed superior wearing comfort, UV absorption (UPF > 40%), and biocompatibility. Photodynamic eco-textiles were in line with the concept of eco-friendly and sustainable development from the source to waste, especially the various post-processing solutions including soil degradation and reuse after disinfection, which were anticipated to be applied in the massive production of next-generation photodynamic textiles. In this research, a series of graphene‐based conductive textiles is developed by three different coating methods, including dip‐coating (D), airbrushing (A), and filtration (F). The cellulose substrate consists of a blend of cotton and rayon fabric, and the coating formulation is based on a mixture of graphene powder as a conductive filler, polyurethane (PU) as a binder, and poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF‐HFP) as a thermoplastic co‐binder. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results are used to prove an enhancement in the thermal stability of the coated fabrics. The graphene content of the coated samples is also estimated from the char residue at 800 °C of the TGA profiles. The graphene‐based coating converts the water‐adsorbing cellulose fabric to a hydrophobic surface as the water contact angle raises from 0° to more than 107° after coating. The mechanical properties of the plain cellulose fabric enhance considerably in terms of tensile strength and tensile modulus, where the highest improvement is seen in the Dip‐coating method, with an 89% increase in tensile strength compared to cellulose fabric. The graphene‐based coating developed in this work enhances the physical, thermal, mechanical, and conductivity properties of the plain cellulose substrate. The issue of large deflections of textiles occurs primarily when analyzing the "drape" of curtains, tablecloths and other flat textile products. The correct drape is particularly important from an aesthetic point of view. Additionally, there is a problem with the stability of the folds created during the drape process. The analysis of this problem is difficult due to the occurrence of large deflections and non-linear properties of the material. In this article, a selected fragment of the above-mentioned issue was tested, relating only to the stability of the fold formed under given loading conditions. A typical example is a fabric resting on a flat surface and loaded with compressive forces. The presented considerations lead to obtaining the deflection curve for a given self-weight and compressive force. Additionally, the obtained shape was tested for stability. Two shape parameters used in the analysis can be applied for the simulation of different shapes of the deflection curve. The analysis has been made using the energy method relating to the total potential energy of the object. The obtained results may be used in algorithms and simulation programs for fabric folding, buckling and for another applications in the area of textile mechanics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria, ESKAPE pathogens, present a significant and alarming threat to public health and healthcare systems. This study addresses the urgent need to combat antimicrobial resistance by exploring alternative ways to reduce the health and cost implications of infections caused by these pathogens. To disrupt their transmission, integrating antimicrobial textiles into personal protective equipment (PPE) is an encouraging avenue. Nevertheless, ensuring the effectiveness and safety of these textiles remains a persistent challenge. To achieve this, we conduct a comprehensive study that systematically compares the effectiveness and potential toxicity of five commonly used antimicrobial agents. To guide decision making, a MULTIMOORA method is employed to select and rank the optimal antimicrobial textile finishes. Through this approach, we determine that silver nitrate is the most suitable choice, while a methoxy-terminated quaternary ammonium compound is deemed less favorable in meeting the desired criteria. The findings of this study offer valuable insights and guidelines for the development of antimicrobial textiles that effectively address the requirements of effectiveness, safety, and durability. Implementing these research outcomes within the textile industry can significantly enhance protection against microbial infections, contribute to the improvement of public health, and mitigate the spread of infectious diseases. AbstractActivated carbon from green walnut shells was synthesized; characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray analysis (SEM-EDX); and used as an adsorbent for the separation and preconcentration of indigo carmine. The pH, adsorbent mass, sample volume, foreign ion effect, eluent type, and eluent volume were optimized. The preconcentration factor was 20.0 and the enrichment factor was 19.68. The developed SPE method provided a limit of detection of 40.8 µg L−1 and limit of quantification of 136.1 µg L−1. The analyte recoveries were from 92 to 102%. The intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations were 3.2% and 3.8%. The protocol was employed for the separation, preconcentration, and spectrophotometric determination of indigo carmine in water, candies, hair dyes, edible cake decorations, fruit juices, and textiles. This article explores the significant role of HodinoRhsoR: nih (Haudenosaunee) women in the creation of fashion and textiles for the Iroquois Indian Groups dioramas at the New York State Museum from 1909 to 1915. The contributions of these women have been erased in the published record, but archival and material records highlight their integral role in the development of the dioramas. The article emphasizes the need to center the labor, intellect, skill, and embodied production of HodinoRhsoR: nih women in the narrative of the Iroquois Indian Groups. It also discusses the power dynamics, agency, and resistance reflected in the garments created by these women. In healthcare facilities, infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) from textile materials are a cause for concern, and nanomaterials are one of the solutions; however, their impact on safety and biocompatibility with the human body must not be neglected. This study aimed to develop a novel multilayer coating with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and immobilized ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) to make efficient antibacterial and biocompatible cotton, polyester, and nylon textiles. For this purpose, the coated textiles were characterized with profilometry, contact angles, and electrokinetic analyzer measurements. The ZnO NPs on the textiles were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The antibacterial tests were conducted with S. aureus and biocompatibility with immortalized human keratinocyte cells. The results demonstrated successful PAH/ZnO coating formation on the textiles, demonstrating weak hydrophobic properties. Furthermore, PAH multilayers caused complete ZnO NP immobilization on the coated textiles. All coated textiles showed strong growth inhibition (2–3-log reduction) in planktonic and adhered S. aureus cells. The bacterial viability was reduced by more than 99%. Cotton, due to its better ZnO NP adherence, demonstrated a slightly higher antibacterial performance than polyester and nylon. The coating procedure enables the binding of ZnO NPs in an amount (<30 µg cm−2) that, after complete dissolution, is significantly below the concentration causing cytotoxicity (10 µg mL−1). The close interaction between skin and clothing has become an attractive cornerstone for the development of therapeutic textiles able to alleviate skin disorders, namely those correlated to microbiota dysregulation. Skin microbiota imbalance is known in several skin diseases, including atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, acne and hidradenitis suppurative (HS). Such microbiota dysregulation is usually correlated with inflammation, discomfort and pruritus. Although conventional treatments, that is, the administration of steroids and antibiotics, have shown some efficacy in treating and alleviating these symptoms, there are still disadvantages that need to be overcome. These include their long‐term usage with side effects negatively impacting resident microbiota members, antibiotic resistance and the elevated rate of recurrence. Remarkably, therapeutic textiles as a non‐pharmacological measure have emerged as a promising strategy to treat, alleviate the symptoms and control the severity of many skin diseases. This systematic review showcases for the first time the effects of therapeutic textiles on patients with skin dysbiosis, focusing on efficacy, safety, adverse effects and antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory properties. The main inclusion criteria were clinical trials performed in patients with skin dysbiosis who received treatment involving the use of therapeutic textiles. Although there are promising outcomes regarding clinical parameters, safety and adverse effects, there is still a lack of information about the impact of therapeutic textiles on the skin microbiota of such patients. Intensive investigation and corroboration with clinical trials are needed to strengthen, define and drive the real benefit and the ideal biomedical application of therapeutic textiles. As a traditional pattern in China, the birds-hooking-flowers pattern was widely used in all kinds of textiles in the Tang Dynasty. And thanks to the the Silk Road, the Tang Dynasty communicated frequently with other countries, so that distinctive arts and cultures, technology and crafts were spread to the Central Plains from eastern areas, which had influence on the emergence and evolution of fabrics with birds-hooking-flowers patterns. On the basis of collating archaeological objects and combing through historical documents, this paper made a comparison between the birds-hooking-flowers patterns in the Tang Dynasty textiles and other crafts with birds-hooking-flowers patterns in Central and Eastern Asian for origin tracing. Moreover, the paper explored the changes by longitudinal comparison and analysis of local birds-hooking-flowers patterned fabrics of the Tang Dynasty. This paper drew three main conclusions. Firstly, the birds-hooking-flowers patterns in textiles of the Tang Dynasty were formed under the influence of the Western beribboned bird pattern and the weft pattern weaving technology. Secondly, the birds-hooking-flowers patterns in textiles of the Tang Dynasty showed the evolution process of imitation, innovation and finalization. The patterns showed a stylistic change from dullness to liveliness throughout the whole Tang Dynasty: (i) the first stage of the development of birds-hooking-flowers patterns was influenced a lot from the Sassanid Persian style, and it was the imitation stage of birds-hooking-flowers patterns for the absorption. And the patterns showed as a dull pair of birds standing on the platform composed with flowers or pearl-linked patterns. Besides, the external part was usually decorated with the pearl-linked skeleton roundel; (ii) during the period of prime Tang Dynasty to middle Tang Dynasty, the birds in the were mostly Chinese native ones, with things in their beaks being a symbol of the good wishes. In the aspect of composition, the skeleton of the early boundaries were gradually broke through and the birds showed the dynamic style of flying up high; (iii) from the late Tang Dynasty to the Five Dynasties, the patterns experienced the evolution of localization. The birds-hooking-flowers patterns often showed the combination of a winged bird and a S-shaped long-stemmed twig, which had the similar traits with the bird-and-flower paintings of the same period. Thirdly, the evolution of the birds-hooking-flowers patterns in the Tang Dynasty textiles can be divided into the development patterns of the bird surrounded by pearl-roundel and the bird standing on the platform. The form of the former was influenced by Ling Yang Gong sample, so that the pattern retained the appearance of the roundel skeleton, and pearl-linked motifs were replaced by plant motifs. Later, the skeleton became non-closed circular trajectory to imitate the previous skeleton; The latter pattern was gradually manifested by a single flying bird hooking a twig. And the bird increasingly broke through the boundaries of the flower platform and presented the dynamic posture. And from the perspective of the Silk Road, it traces the source of the motifs, weaving techniques and cultural origins, and explores the changes in the form. Eva Obodo's recent art exhibition at the kó gallery in Lagos showcased his works in textile art, which explore various aspects of social life in Nigeria. Micro/nanostructures can increase effective surface area and enhance the performance of wearable devices, such as the sensitivity of sensors and output of triboelectric nanogenerators. Empowering commercial fibers and fabrics with durable and robust micro/nanostructures has become a major research concern for sustainable wearables. Many technologies are developed to fabricate micron/nanostructures on fibers and textiles, such as breath figure method, electrospinning, and direct imprinting thermal drawing. However, most of these methods have their own limitations toward mass production and real‐life application, including poor solvent resistance, time assuming, requiring expensive equipment, and limited capacity for post‐adjustment of commercial textiles. Herein, a plasma‐enhanced breath figure (PEBF) technique to fabricate solvent‐tolerant microporous structure on existing fabrics with tailored pore size is developed. By combining the wearable nature of fabrics and the surface engineering power of PEBF, the fabricated solvent‐tolerant microporous fabric offers excellent flexibility, washability, breathability, and suitability for large‐scale production, as well as the advantages of cost effectiveness and fast production. Furthermore, wearable triboelectric nanogenerators are fabricated based on solvent‐resistant microporous structured fabrics, revealing the bright future of the PEBF technology in wearable devices and smart textiles. Man‐made superhydrophobic membranes are of interest for various applications in energy, environment, and medical fields. However, simultaneously achieving durable superhydrophobicity, robust waterproofness, and high breathability of the membranes is still challenging. Herein, an efficient and powerful strategy is reported to create superhydrophobic membranes with perdurable liquid repellency and robust breathability via combining humidity‐induced electrospinning with coat‐crosslinking technology. The micro/nano rough structure is in situ constructed based on manipulating the phase separation of electrospun jets; meanwhile, the waterborne acrylic resins are bridged to the surface of nanofiber to endow the membranes with stable low surface energy via coating and crosslinking treatment. Eventually, the resultant membranes present superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of ≈154°, good self‐cleaning and anti‐icing properties, robust waterproofness of 83.4 kPa, and high breathability of 3.71 kg m−2 d−1. More interestingly, the nanomaterials can maintain durable superhydrophobicity even after exposure to various severe conditions. The successful creation of high‐performance superhydrophobic membranes opens a new avenue for synthesizing advanced functional materials for application in a variety of fields. Highlights: Ag nanoparticles are evenly plated on BN-embedded fibers as a thermally conductive sheath, bridging the insulating interface between fibers to construct a 3D heat transfer network. The LM-printed e-textile shows outstanding capability for the monitoring of human ECG, sEMG, and EEG signals even under intense EM interference, when commercial electrodes cannot work properly. The e-textile simultaneously manifests excellent EMI shielding (SET > 65, X-band) and UV protection (UPF = 143.1) performance, thus protecting the device and skin from harmful radiation. Skin-attachable electronics have garnered considerable research attention in health monitoring and artificial intelligence domains, whereas susceptibility to electromagnetic interference (EMI), heat accumulation issues, and ultraviolet (UV)-induced aging problems pose significant constraints on their potential applications. Here, an ultra-elastic, highly breathable, and thermal-comfortable epidermal sensor with exceptional UV-EMI shielding performance and remarkable thermal conductivity is developed for high-fidelity monitoring of multiple human electrophysiological signals. Via filling the elastomeric microfibers with thermally conductive boron nitride nanoparticles and bridging the insulating fiber interfaces by plating Ag nanoparticles (NPs), an interwoven thermal conducting fiber network (0.72 W m−1 K−1) is constructed benefiting from the seamless thermal interfaces, facilitating unimpeded heat dissipation for comfort skin wearing. More excitingly, the elastomeric fiber substrates simultaneously achieve outstanding UV protection (UPF = 143.1) and EMI shielding (SET > 65, X-band) capabilities owing to the high electrical conductivity and surface plasmon resonance of Ag NPs. Furthermore, an electronic textile prepared by printing liquid metal on the UV-EMI shielding and thermally conductive nonwoven textile is finally utilized as an advanced epidermal sensor, which succeeds in monitoring different electrophysiological signals under vigorous electromagnetic interference. Modeling the consolidation of fiber‐reinforced thermoplastic composites at the part level presents a formidable computational challenge due to the multi‐scale nature of the process. In this article, a method to bypass the multi‐scale problem by homogenizing the micro scale and describing the medium with characteristic parameters is described. The model is intended for press molding of hybrid textiles and considers a free‐form plate with non‐uniform thickness and can describe consolidation in three dimensions with some restrictions. 2D implementation in FEM shows how in‐plane matrix pressure gradients can arise in parts and cause fiber disorientation. Experimental verification demonstrates that fiber disorientation arises at the predicted location, and that defect size is proportional to matrix pressure gradient. This novel consolidation model provides new insights, enables part and process optimization, and paves the way for high‐quality composite part production.
