This study aimed to determine nursing students’ perceptions of dementia and patients with dementia. Specifically, this study sought to illuminate the essential meaning of dementia among nursing students to uncover insights useful for developing patient-centered care rooted in empathy for patients with dementia. This study used a descriptive phenomenological research method. Between August and September 2023, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 nursing students. Colaizzi’s method was used for the manual analysis. After analyzing the interview data on nursing students’ awareness of dementia, four categories, nine theme clusters, and 28 formulated meanings were derived. The four categories were “View of dementia”, “Feelings about dementia”, “Efforts made regarding dementia”, and “Dementia as a nursing student”. Although nursing students’ perceptions of dementia resulted in negative perspectives and emotions, by looking into coping methods and wishes for dementia, this study also confirmed that nursing students had an awareness of caring for patients with dementia.

Introduction: Both regimens of TAS-102 (trifluridine/tipiracil) with and without bevacizumab are considered standard options for salvage treatment in patients with refractory metastatic colorectal cancer. Materials and methods: This analysis included patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who received either TAS-102 plus bevacizumab or TAS-102 alone between July 2022 and November 2023 at Samsung Medical Center. We evaluated the objective response rate (ORR), progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and safety profile of both regimens. Results: In total, 139 patients were included in this analysis. Median age was 60.8 years, and median number of previous lines of therapy was four (range: 2.45-6.55). More than half of the subjects (56.8%) had RAS mutations and 92.9% received previous anti-VEGF therapy. 83 (59.7%) patients received the combination of TAS-102 and bevacizumab and 56 (40.3%) received TAS-102 alone. The number of patients with prior regorafenib treatment was 14 in the TAS-102 with bevacizumab group and 5 in the TAS-102 alone group. The disease control rate was 51.8% in the combination group and 32.1% in the TAS-102 alone group. The median PFS was 3.3 months (95% CI, 2.7-6.6) in the combination group and 2.5 months (95% CI, 2.0-3.8) in the TAS-102 alone group (HR, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.38-0.82; p=0.003). The median OS in these two groups was 10.8 months (95% CI, 8.4-NA) and 6.0 months (95% CI, 4.8-9.8), respectively (HR, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.40-0.97, p=0.033). In the exploratory analysis of TAS-102 + Bev group, patients with the KRAS G12 mutation had inferior OS compared to those without the mutation (HR, 2.01, 95% CI, 1.04-3.90, p=0.035). Commonly observed adverse events were hematologic-related, including neutropenia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia, as well as nausea. While any grade neutropenia was observed at similar frequencies in the two groups (57.8% and 57.1%), grade 3 or higher neutropenia was more frequent in the combination group than the TAS-102 alone group (31.3% vs. 17.9%). Among patients who received subsequent anticancer therapy after treatment failure, 74.1% received regorafenib. Conclusions: The combination of TAS-102 and bevacizumab resulted in a better survival outcome than TAS-102 monotherapy, consistent with previous studies. This analysis supports the use of the combination of TAS-102 and bevacizumab as the best therapeutic option for patients with refractory metastatic colorectal cancer in clinical practice. Background/Aims: We investigated how interactions between humans and computer-aided detection (CADe) systems are influenced by the user’s experience and polyp characteristics. Methods: We developed a CADe system using YOLOv4, trained on 16,996 polyp images from 1,914 patients and 1,800 synthesized sessile serrated lesion (SSL) images. The performance of polyp detection with CADe assistance was evaluated using a computerized test module. Eighteen participants were grouped by colonoscopy experience (nurses, fellows, and experts). The value added by CADe based on the histopathology and detection difficulty of polyps were analyzed. Results: The area under the curve for CADe was 0.87 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.83 to 0.91). CADe assistance increased overall polyp detection accuracy from 69.7% to 77.7% (odds ratio [OR], 1.88; 95% CI, 1.69 to 2.09). However, accuracy decreased when CADe inaccurately detected a polyp (OR, 0.72; 95% CI, 0.58 to 0.87). The impact of CADe assistance was most and least prominent in the nurses (OR, 1.97; 95% CI, 1.71 to 2.27) and the experts (OR, 1.42; 95% CI, 1.15 to 1.74), respectively. Participants demonstrated better sensitivity with CADe assistance, achieving 81.7% for adenomas and 92.4% for easy-to-detect polyps, surpassing the standalone CADe performance of 79.7% and 89.8%, respectively. For SSLs and difficult-to-detect polyps, participants' sensitivities with CADe assistance (66.5% and 71.5%, respectively) were below those of standalone CADe (81.1% and 74.4%). Compared to the other two groups (56.1% and 61.7%), the expert group showed sensitivity closest to that of standalone CADe in detecting SSLs (79.7% vs 81.1%, respectively). Background: Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are widely used as adjuvant analgesics for postoperative pain. This meta-analysis compared the effects of intravenous (IV) ibuprofen and acetaminophen on postoperative opioid consumption and pain intensity after general anesthesia. Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were searched to identify relevant studies published up to May 2023. Randomized controlled trials comparing the effects of perioperative IV ibuprofen and acetaminophen on postoperative opioid consumption and pain after general anesthesia were included in the meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis (TSA). Results: Eight studies with 494 participants were included. Compared to IV acetaminophen, IV ibuprofen significantly reduced 24 h opioid consumption, presented as morphine equivalents (mean difference [MD]: -6.01 mg, 95% CI [-8.60, -3.42], P < 0.00001, I² = 55%), and pain scores (on a scale of 0-10) at 4-6 h (MD: -0.83, 95% CI [-1.29, -0.37], P = 0.0004, I² = 65%) and 12 h (MD: -0.38, 95% CI [-0.68, -0.08], P = 0.01, I² = 11%) postoperatively. These results were statistically significant in TSA. Pain scores at 24 h postoperatively and side effects were not significantly different between the two groups in the meta- analysis, and TSA revealed that the sample size was too small to adequately evaluate the effects, requiring further studies for conclusive results. Conclusions: Perioperative IV ibuprofen reduced 24 h opioid consumption and pain severity up to 12 h postoperatively compared to acetaminophen. Purpose: Bladder preservation chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in patients with a clinical complete response (cCR) following cisplatin-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is a promising treatment strategy for muscle-invasive bladder urothelial carcinoma (MIBC). A combined analysis of raw data from two prospective phase II studies was performed to better evaluate the feasibility of selective bladder preservation CRT. Materials and Methods: The analysis was based on primary efficacy data from two independent studies, including 76 MIBC patients receiving NAC followed by bladder preservation CRT. The efficacy data included metastasis-free survival (MFS) and disease-free survival (DFS). For the present analysis, starting point of survival was defined as the date of commencing CRT. Results: Among 76 patients, 66 had a cCR following NAC. Sixty-four patients received gemcitabine and cisplatin (GC) combination chemotherapy in neoadjuvant setting, and 12 received nivolumab plus GC. Bladder preservation CRT following NAC was generally well-tolerated, with low urinary tract symptoms being the most common late complication. With a median follow-up of 64 months, recurrence was recorded in 43 patients (57%): intravesical only (n=20), metastatic only (n=16), and both (n=7). In 27 patients with intravesical recurrence, transurethral resection, and Bacillus Calmette-Guerin treatment was given to 17 patients. Salvage cystectomy was performed in 10 patients. Median DFS was 46.3 (95% confidence interval [CI], 25.1 to 67.5) months, and the median MFS was not reached. Neither DFS nor MFS appeared to be affected by any of the baseline characteristics. However, DFS was significantly longer in patients with a cCR than in those without (hazard ratio, 0.465; 95% CI, 0.222 to 0.976). Conclusion The strategy of NAC followed by selective bladder preservation CRT based on the cCR is feasible in the treatment of MIBC. Purpose: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of adjuvant cisplatin-based chemotherapy in patients with locally advanced upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC), administered following radical nephroureterectomy. Materials and Methods: Patients with UTUC, arising from renal pelvis or ureter, staged pT3/T4 or N+ were treated with adjuvant chemotherapy following surgery. The chemotherapy consisted of gemcitabine 1,000 mg/m2 on days 1 and 8, cisplatin 70 mg/m2 on day 1. Treatment was repeated every 3 weeks for up to 4 cycles. Endpoints included disease-free survival (DFS), metastasis-free survival (MFS), and safety. Results: Among 89 eligible patients, 85 (95.5%) completed at least 3 cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy. Chemotherapy was well tolerated, the main toxicities being mild-to-moderate gastrointestinal toxic effects and pruritus. With a median follow-up of 37 months, median DFS was 30 months (95% confidence interval, 22 to 39), and the median MFS was not reached. The 3-year DFS and MFS were 44% and 56%, respectively. Multivariate analyses revealed that the main factor associated with DFS and MFS was the lymph node involvement, whereas age, T category, grade, or the primary site of UTUC were not significantly associated with DFS or MFS. Conclusion Adjuvant cisplatin-based chemotherapy after radical surgery of pT3/T4 or N+ UTUC was feasible and may demonstrate benefits in DFS and MFS. Whether novel agents added to the chemotherapy regimen, as a concurrent combination or maintenance, impacts on survival or reduces the development of metastases remains to be studied. This paper presents a case study for fault diagnosis and mitigation of excessive motor vibrations caused by floor-induced resonance. Vertical motors in a water treatment plant had experienced excessive vibration levels (> 12 mm/s) at its non-drive end (NDE) location. A comprehensive vibration investigation was conducted to map-out the vibrations of the entire machine train which includes pipes, coupling, motors, pedestal, plinth and floor slab of the pump house. Vibration investigation found that the root cause of the excessive motor vibration was caused by the resonance of the floor slab as the natural frequency of the floor slab (20 Hz) coincided with the operating frequency (25 Hz) of the motors. As such, the first remedy action undertaken at that time was the reinforcement of the motor pedestal with additional ribs in order to shift the primary natural frequency of the motor-pedestal system to be away from the motor operating frequency. However, this attempt failed to subside the excessive motor vibration as this method did not result in significant shift in the natural frequency of the motor-pedestal-floor system. The second attempt was conceived to design a tuned-mass damper (TMD) for the motors. Finite Element Analysis was used to design a custom made TMD to be attached at the motor NDE locations. After several fine-tuning and modifications, the TMD was installed and had successfully reduced the motor NDE vibration levels for the vertical motors to be within 5 mm/s for all tri-axes measurements and thus enables the motors for long term unrestricted operation in accordance with the ISO 10816-3 Standard. As the regenerative mechanisms of biological organisms, self-healing provides useful functions for soft electronics or associated systems. However, there have been few examples of soft electronics where all components have self-healing properties while also ensuring compatibility between components to achieve multifunctional and resilient bio-integrated electronics. Here, we introduce a stretchable, biodegradable, self-healing conductor constructed by combination of two layers: (i) synthetic self-healing elastomer and (ii) self-healing conductive composite with additives. Abundant dynamic disulfide and hydrogen bonds of the elastomer and conductive composite enable rapid and complete recovery of electrical conductivity (~1000 siemens per centimeter) and stretchability (~500%) in response to repetitive damages, and chemical interactions of interpenetrated polymer chains of these components facilitate robust adhesion strength, even under extreme mechanical stress. System-level demonstration of soft, self-healing electronics with diagnostic/therapeutic functions for the urinary bladder validates the possibility for versatile, practical uses in biomedical research areas. Abstract Rheumatoid arthritis causes excessive bone loss by stimulating osteoclast differentiation. Extracellular vesicles are valuable disease markers, conveyors of distant cell-to-cell communication, and carriers for drug delivery. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-osteoclastogenic effects of extracellular vesicles derived from dairy Propionibacterium freudenreichii MJ2 (PFEVs) and the improvement effect of PFEVs on collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) animal model. PFEVs were observed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, nanoparticle tracking analysis, and LC–MS/MS. The inhibitory activity of PFEVs against receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclast differentiation was investigated in RAW 264.7 cells. PFEVs significantly decreased the expression levels of genes and proteins related to osteoclast differentiation. PFEVs decreased RANK–RANKL binding. In a CIA mouse model, PFEVs treatment significantly reduced arthritis scores and collagen-specific immunoglobulins. PFEVs treatment also reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines and increased anti-inflammatory cytokines. The anti-inflammatory effects were confirmed by H&E staining, and PFEVs treatment inhibited osteoclastogenesis in the CIA mouse model. In conclusion, PFEVs inhibited osteoclast differentiation by inhibiting RANK–RANKL signaling, thereby decreasing the expression of osteoclast differentiation-related genes. PFEVs also improved collagen-induced arthritis by inhibiting inflammation and osteoclastogenesis.

Using transcranial doppler ultrasonography (TCD) to measure the presence or absence of abnormalities in patent foramen ovale (PFO) is more effective than transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) because it is simple, inexpensive, and non-invasive. Thus, it can be a good alternative test in cases where it is difficult to perform TEE or in groups at a high risk of complications. Therefore, in this study, we sought to assist in arriving at a diagnosis by suggesting an appropriate method through the comparison of empirical results according to the presence or absence of blood use and varying patient posture. The results were compared depending on the patient’s posture and whether blood was used. Patients in whom both middle cerebral arteries were observed were targeted. In cases where the temporal window was defective, it was replaced with basilar artery and compared. There were higher positivity rate and accuracy for sitting position using valsalva maneuver (VM) than for Resting and supine position using VM. Therefore, if it is possible to perform a sitting position using VM with a mixture of blood, it would be a good idea to perform it.

Summary: Background: Transportation noise has been linked with cardiometabolic outcomes, yet whether it is a risk factor for atrial fibrillation (AF) remains inconclusive. We aimed to assess whether transportation noise was associated with AF in a large, pooled Nordic cohort. Methods: We pooled data from 11 Nordic cohorts, totaling 161,115 participants. Based on address history from five years before baseline until end of follow-up, road, railway, and aircraft noise was estimated at a residential level. Incident AF was ascertained via linkage to nationwide patient registries. Cox proportional hazards models were utilized to estimate associations between running 5-year time-weighted mean transportation noise (Lden) and AF after adjusting for sociodemographics, lifestyle, and air pollution. Findings: We identified 18,939 incident AF cases over a median follow-up of 19.6 years. Road traffic noise was associated with AF, with a hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of 1.02 (1.00–1.04) per 10-dB of 5-year mean time-weighted exposure, which changed to 1.03 (1.01–1.06) when implementing a 53-dB cut-off. In effect modification analyses, the association for road traffic noise and AF appeared strongest in women and overweight and obese participants. Compared to exposures ≤40 dB, aircraft noise of 40.1–50 and > 50 dB were associated with HRs of 1.04 (0.93–1.16) and 1.12 (0.98–1.27), respectively. Railway noise was not associated with AF. We found a HR of 1.19 (1.02–1.40) among people exposed to noise from road (≥45 dB), railway (>40 dB), and aircraft (>40 dB) combined. Interpretation: Road traffic noise, and possibly aircraft noise, may be associated with elevated risk of AF. Funding: NordForsk.

Background: This study investigated the association of prenatal and early childhood exposure to air pollution with epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) at six years of age using the Environment and Development of Children Cohort (EDC Cohort) Materials & methods: Air pollution, including particulate matter [< 2.5 µm (PM2.5) and < 10 µm (PM10) in an aerodynamic diameter], nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) were estimated based on the residential address for two periods: 1) during the whole pregnancy, and 2) for one year before the follow-up in children at six years of age. The methylation levels in whole blood at six years of age were measured, and the methylation clocks, including Horvath’s clock, Horvath’s skin and blood clock, PedBE, and Wu’s clock, were estimated. Multivariate linear regression models were constructed to analyze the association between EAA and air pollutants. Results: A total of 76 children in EDC cohort were enrolled in this study. During the whole pregnancy, interquartile range (IQR) increases in exposure to PM2.5 (4.56 μg/m3) and CO (0.156 ppm) were associated with 0.406 years and 0.799 years of EAA (Horvath’s clock), respectively. An IQR increase in PM2.5 (4.76 μg/m3) for one year before the child was six years of age was associated with 0.509 years of EAA (Horvath’s clock) and 0.289 years of EAA (Wu’s clock). PM10 (4.30 μg/m3) and O3 (0.003 ppm) exposure in the period were also associated with EAA in Horvath’s clock (0.280 years) and EAA in Horvath’s skin and blood clock (0.163 years), respectively. Conclusion: We found that prenatal and childhood exposure to ambient air pollutants is associated with EAA among children. The results suggest that air pollution could induce excess biological aging even in prenatal and early life.

Abstract Recent evidence of gut microbiota dysbiosis in the context of psoriasis and the increased cooccurrence of inflammatory bowel disease and psoriasis suggest a close relationship between skin and gut immune responses. Using a mouse model of psoriasis induced by the Toll-like receptor (TLR) 7 ligand imiquimod, we found that psoriatic dermatitis was accompanied by inflammatory changes in the small intestine associated with eosinophil degranulation, which impaired intestinal barrier integrity. Inflammatory responses in the skin and small intestine were increased in mice prone to eosinophil degranulation. Caco-2 human intestinal epithelial cells were treated with media containing eosinophil granule proteins and exhibited signs of inflammation and damage. Imiquimod-induced skin and intestinal changes were attenuated in eosinophil-deficient mice, and this attenuation was counteracted by the transfer of eosinophils. Imiquimod levels and the distribution of eosinophils were positively correlated in the intestine. TLR7-deficient mice did not exhibit intestinal eosinophil degranulation but did exhibit attenuated inflammation in the skin and small intestine following imiquimod administration. These results suggest that TLR7-dependent bidirectional skin-to-gut communication occurs in psoriatic inflammation and that inflammatory changes in the intestine can accelerate psoriasis.

Chrysanthemums, a significant genus within the Asteraceae, hold a paramount position in the global floricultural industry, second only to roses in market demand. The proliferation of diverse chrysanthemum cultivars presents a formidable challenge for accurate identification, exacerbated by the abundance of varieties, intricate floral structures, diverse floret types, and complex genetic profiles. Precise recognition of chrysanthemum phenotypes is indispensable to navigating these complexities. Traditional methods, including morphology studies, statistical analyses, and molecular markers, have fallen short due to their manual nature and time-intensive processes. This study presents an innovative solution employing deep learning techniques for image-based chrysanthemum phenotype recognition. Leveraging machine learning, our system autonomously extracts key features from chrysanthemum images, converting morphological data into accessible two-dimensional representations. We utilized Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) algorithms to construct frameworks for processing image data and classifying chrysanthemum cultivars based on color, shape, and texture. Experimental results, encompassing 10 cultivars, 10 flower colors, and five flower shapes, consistently demonstrated recognition accuracy ranging from 79.29% up to 97.86%. This tool promises streamlined identification of flower traits, and we anticipate its potential for real-time identification enhancements in future iterations, promising advances in chrysanthemum cultivation and exportation processes. Our approach offers a novel and efficient means to address the challenges posed by the vast diversity within chrysanthemum species, facilitating improved management, breeding, and marketing strategies in the floricultural industry.

Background: Long-term exposure to road traffic noise is associated with cardiovascular disease, but the evidence on respiratory diseases is just emerging. We aimed to examine the association between long-term exposure to road traffic noise and the incidence of acute lower respiratory infections (ALRIs) in adults. Methods: We followed 23,141 female nurses (age ≥ 44 years) from the Danish Nurse Cohort from baseline (1993 or 1999) to their first hospital contact (inpatient, outpatient, or emergency room) for ALRI, death, emigration or the end of 2015. The residential annual mean levels of road traffic noise (Lden) during the follow-up were estimated using the Nord2000 model. We applied time-varying Cox models to estimate the association of 3-year mean exposure to Lden with ALRIs incidence and piecewise analysis to estimate the threshold of Lden. We examined the robustness of the results by adjusting for residential exposure to air pollution, and the effect modification by attained age, socioeconomic status (SES), comorbidity, and lifestyle. Results: During 18.5 years of follow-up, 2,004 nurses developed ALRIs. In a linear model, we detected a statistically significant positive association between Lden and ALRI, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.11 (95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.04, 1.17) per 9.2 dB (interquartile range, IQR). We observed non-linear association with a threshold at 57 dB, above which the HR was 1.25 (95 % CI: 1.09, 1.43) per IQR. Further adjustment for PM2.5 reduced the HRs slightly to 1.21 (95 % CI: 1.04, 1.40). The associations were stronger for nurses with asthma, and in those with lowest SES. Conclusion: We present novel findings in support of the association between long-term exposure to road traffic noise and ALRIs, independent of air pollution, suggesting noise as a risk factor for infectious respiratory diseases.

Background: Greenspaces contribute positively to mental and physical well-being, promote social cohesion, and alleviate environmental stressors, such as air pollution. Ecological studies suggest that greenspace may affect incidence and severity of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Objective: This study examines the association between residential greenspace and COVID-19 related hospitalization and death. Method: In this retrospective cohort based on patient records from the Greater Manchester Care Records, all first COVID-19 cases diagnosed between March 1, 2020, and May 31, 2022 were followed until COVID-19 related hospitalization or death within 28 days. Residential greenspace availability was assessed using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index per lower super output area in Greater Manchester. The association of greenspace with COVID-19 hospitalization and mortality were estimated using multivariate logistic regression models after adjusting for potential individual, temporal, and spatial confounders. We explored potential effect modifications of the associations with greenspace and COVID-19 severity by age, sex, body mass index, smoking, deprivation, and certain comorbidities. Combined effects of greenspace and air pollution (NO2 and PM2.5) were investigated by mutually adjusting pairs with correlation coefficients ≤ 0·7. Results: Significant negative associations were observed between greenspace availability and COVID-19 hospitalization and mortality with odds ratios [OR] (95 % Confidence Intervals [CI]) of 0·96 (0·94-0·97) and 0·84 (0·80-0·88) (per interquartile range [IQR]), respectively. Abstract Background Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) or irinotecan-based chemotherapy is frequently used after failure of second-line paclitaxel plus ramucirumab treatment for patients with locally advanced unresectable or metastatic advanced gastric cancer (AGC). This study aimed to compare the efficacy between ICI and irinotecan-based chemotherapy as third-line treatment in patients with AGC. Methods We retrospectively reviewed patients with AGC, whose third-line treatment started between July 2019 and June 2021 at 17 institutions in Korea. The ICI group included patients who received nivolumab or pembrolizumab, and the irinotecan-based chemotherapy group included patients who received irinotecan or FOLFIRI (5-fluorouracil, leucovorin and irinotecan). Results A total of 363 patients [n = 129 (ICI) and n = 234 (irinotecan-based chemotherapy)] were analyzed. The median progression-free survival was 2.3 and 2.9 months in ICI and irinotecan-based chemotherapy groups, respectively (p = 0.802). The median overall survival (OS) was 5.5 and 6.0 months in ICI and irinotecan-based chemotherapy groups, respectively (p = 0.786). The objective of this study was to quantitatively analyze twelve phenolic compounds through HPLC/UV and to assess the antioxidant abilities using the DPPH and ABTS+ assays in the leaves and flowers of six cultivars of C. morifolium: ‘Geumsu’, ‘Ilonka’, ‘Silvia’, ‘Pompadour’, ‘Yes Holic’, and ‘Ford’. The results indicated that the leaves of ‘Geumsu’ and ‘Ford’, as well as the ‘Pompadour’ flowers contained high levels of phenolic compounds and exhibited strong antioxidant abilities. Additionally, a relationship between the phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities was observed. These findings provide foundational knowledge about C. morifolium cultivars, which are promising natural sources that can offer health benefits.

A new mmWave transmitter architecture with multibeam-based segmented beamforming arrays (SBAs) for high-efficiency and secure communication is proposed. Unlike convetional communication architecture, which transmits a high-order QAM signal through a single RF-chain, the proposed structure transmits independently controlled multiple QPSK signals to form M-QAM signals. The multiple independent SBA chains radiate independent QPSK signals at each chain’s maximum operation efficiency to reduce the peak-to-average-power ratio. Then, multiple beams with QPSK signals are steered by the SBAs to form a line of combination (LoC) where multiple QPSK signals are spatially vector-combined to generate M-QAM signals correctly. For any unidentified receiver outside the LoC, the desired high-order QAM signals cannot be retrieved owing to the lack of required sets of QPSK signals and SBA steering information. Thus, higher data security can be also guaranteed. To verify the proposed architecture, 28-GHz SBA-based transmitter and reference receiver were implemented. Three QPSK signal sets were transmitted by three SBAs supporting independent beamforming to flexibly create a narrow LoC where the receiver retrieved 64-QAM signals successfully. Furthermore, secured data transmission was verified with an extra eavesdropper in the vicinity of the target receiver. By controlling the LoC, only the target receiver successfully demodulated the 64-QAM signals.

Background: Bisphenol A (BPA) is known as an obesogenic endocrine disruptor. Bisphenol S (BPS) and F (BPF) are substitutes that have recently replaced BPA. Objectives: To investigate the relationships of urinary bisphenols (BPA, BPS and BPF) with adiposity measurements (obesity, BMI z-score, and fat mass), serum adipokine levels (adiponectin and leptin), and adiponectin/leptin ratio (A/L ratio) in 6- and 8-year-old children. Methods: A total of 561 children who participated in the Environment and Development of Children cohort (482 and 516 children visited at age 6 and 8, respectively) at Seoul National University Children’s Hospital during 2015–2019 were included. Urinary BPA levels were log-transformed. BPS levels were categorized into three groups (non-detected, lower-half, and higher-half of detected), and BPF levels were classified into two groups (non-detected and detected). Results: The urinary BPS higher-half group had a higher BMI z-score (β = 0.160, P = 0.044), higher fat mass (β = 0.104, P < 0.001), lower adiponectin concentration (β =- 0.069, P < 0.001), higher leptin concentration (β = 0.360, P < 0.001), and lower A/L ratio (β =- 0.428, P < 0.001) compared with the non-detected group. The urinary BPF-detected group had a higher fat mass (β = 0.074, P < 0.001), lower adiponectin concentration (β =- 0.069, P < 0.001), higher leptin concentration (β = 0.360, P < 0.001), and lower A/L ratio (β =- 0.428, P < 0.001) compared with the non-detected group. The BPA levels showed no consistent associations with outcomes, except for isolated associations of BPA at age 6 with a higher BMI z-score at age 6 (P = 0.016) and leptin at age 8 (P = 0.021). Conclusions: Increased exposure to BPS and BPF is associated with higher fat mass and leptin concentration, lower serum adiponectin, and lower A/L ratio in children. These findings suggest potential adverse effects of BPA substitutes on adiposity and adipokines. No consistent association of BPA exposure with outcomes could be partly explained by the decreasing BPA levels over time.

Conserving tropical forests and peatlands is considered a key strategy for international forest project cooperation and the promotion of carbon neutrality. Focusing on peatlands in the Sumatra Selatan and Jambi provinces in Indonesia, this study aimed to assess land-cover changes from 1992 to 2020 and associated ecosystem services to assist in the development of effective forest and peatland-related projects. This study first analyzed the historical land-cover changes as a baseline for establishing potential project scenarios. Carbon storage, habitat suitability, water yield, and crop production were selected as the key ecosystem services in the peatlands, and these were assessed for the current land cover and two possible project scenarios in 2050 – business-as-usual (BAU) and forest and wetland restoration (FOR) – using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) tool. In terms of land-cover changes, the area of forests and wetlands decreased, but that of agriculture, grassland, and built-up areas increased in the peatlands. Based on the land-cover scenarios, the carbon storage, habitat suitability, water yield, and crop production varied on 2.32–2,74 billion tC, 92.02–93.46 %, 16.45–16,91 billion m3, and 2.34–2.73 million ton, respectively. The total economic value of the ecosystem services for the current land cover was $75.41 billion, while that predicted for BAU and FOR was estimated to be $70.59 billion and $77.79 billion, respectively. Restoration plans have the environmental and economic benefit of provincial-level assessment, so the development of appropriate projects for tropical forest and peatland conservation and restoration is necessary for international cooperation projects.

Recent research suggests a link between air pollution and cognitive development in children, and studies on air pollution and academic achievement are emerging. We conducted a nationwide cohort study in Denmark to explore the associations between lifetime exposure to air pollution and academic performance in 9th grade. The study encompassed 785,312 children born in Denmark between 1989 and 2005, all of whom completed 9th-grade exit examinations. Using linear mixed models with a random intercept for each school, we assessed the relationship between 16 years of exposure to PM2.5, PM10, and gaseous pollutants and Grade Point Averages (GPA) in exit examinations, covering subjects such as Danish literature, Danish writing, English, mathematics, and natural sciences. The study revealed that a 5 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 and PM10 was associated with a decrease of 0.99 (95 % Confidence Intervals: −1.05, −0.92) and 0.46 (−0.50, −0.41) in GPA, respectively. Notably, these negative associations were more pronounced in mathematics and natural sciences compared to language-related subjects. Additionally, girls and children with non-Danish mothers were found to be particularly susceptible to the adverse effects of air pollution exposure. These results underscore the potential long-term consequences of air pollution on academic achievement, emphasizing the significance of interventions that foster healthier environments for children's cognitive development.

Approved COVID-19 vaccines primarily induce neutralizing antibodies targeting the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein. However, the emergence of variants of concern with RBD mutations poses challenges to vaccine efficacy. This study aimed to design a next-generation vaccine that provides broader protection against diverse coronaviruses, focusing on glycan-free S2 peptides as vaccine candidates to overcome the low immunogenicity of the S2 domain due to the N-linked glycans on the S antigen stalk, which can mask S2 antibody responses. Glycan-free S2 peptides were synthesized and attached to SARS-CoV-2 virus-like particles (VLPs) lacking the S antigen. Humoral and cellular immune responses were analyzed after the second booster immunization in BALB/c mice. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay revealed the reactivity of sera against SARS-CoV-2 variants, and pseudovirus neutralization assay confirmed neutralizing activities. Among the S2 peptide-conjugated VLPs, the S2.3 (N1135-K1157) and S2.5 (A1174-L1193) peptide–VLP conjugates effectively induced S2-specific serum immunoglobulins. These antisera showed high reactivity against SARS-CoV-2 variant S proteins and effectively inhibited pseudoviral infections. S2 peptide-conjugated VLPs activated SARS-CoV-2 VLP-specific T-cells. The SARS-CoV-2 vaccine incorporating conserved S2 peptides and CoV-2 VLPs shows promise as a universal vaccine capable of generating neutralizing antibodies and T-cell responses against SARS-CoV-2 variants.

Objectives To explore the associations of long-term exposure to air pollution with onset of all human health conditions.Design Prospective phenome-wide association study.Setting Denmark.Participants All Danish residents aged ≥30 years on 1 January 2000 were included (N=3 323 612). After exclusion of individuals with missing geocoded residential addresses, 3 111 988 participants were available for the statistical analyses.Main outcome measure First registered diagnosis of every health condition according to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision, from 2000 to 2017.Results Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were both positively associated with the onset of more than 700 health conditions (ie, >80% of the registered health conditions) after correction for multiple testing, while the remaining associations were inverse or insignificant. As regards the most common health conditions, PM2.5 and NO2 were strongest positively associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (PM2.5: HR 1.06 (95% CI 1.05 to 1.07) per 1 IQR increase in exposure level; NO2: 1.14 (95% CI 1.12 to 1.15)), type 2 diabetes (PM2.5: 1.06 (95% CI 1.05 to 1.06); NO2: 1.12 (95% CI 1.10 to 1.13)) and ischaemic heart disease (PM2.5: 1.05 (95% CI 1.04 to 1.05); NO2: 1.11 (95% CI 1.09 to 1.12)). Furthermore, PM2.5 and NO2 were both positively associated with so far unexplored, but highly prevalent outcomes relevant to public health, including senile cataract, hearing loss and urinary tract infection.Conclusions The findings of this study suggest that air pollution has a more extensive impact on human health than previously known. However, as this study is the first of its kind to investigate the associations of long-term exposure to air pollution with onset of all human health conditions, further research is needed to replicate the study findings.

Objective Recent evidence supports that gynaecomastia may predict long-term morbidity, but evidence on the association with death and causes of death in males with gynaecomastia is lacking. The objective of this work is to estimate the risk of death in men diagnosed with gynaecomastia and evaluate whether this was conditional on underlying aetiologies of gynaecomastia.Design A nationwide register-based cohort study.Setting Nationwide Danish national health registries.Participants Males were diagnosed with incident gynaecomastia (n=23 429) from 1 January 1995 to 30 June 2021, and each was age and calendar matched to five randomly population-based males without gynaecomastia (n=117 145).Interventions Not applicable.Primary and secondary outcomes Gynaecomastia was distinguished between males without (idiopathic) and males with a known pre-existing risk factor. Cox regression models and Kaplan-Meier analyses estimated associations between gynaecomastia and death (all cause/cause specific).Results We identified a total of 16 253 males with idiopathic gynaecomastia and 7176 with gynaecomastia and a known pre-existing risk factor. Of these, 1093 (6.7%) and 1501 (20.9%) died during follow-up, respectively. We detected a 37% increased risk of all-cause death in males with gynaecomastia in the entire cohort (HR 1.37; 95% CI 1.31 to 1.43). Death risk was highest in males diagnosed with gynaecomastia and a known pre-existing risk factor (HR 1.75; 95% CI 1.64 to 1.86) compared with males with idiopathic gynaecomastia (HR 1.05; 95% CI 0.98 to 1.13). Specific causes of increased death were malignant neoplasms and circulatory, pulmonary and gastrointestinal diseases. Of the latter, an over fivefold risk of death from liver disease was detected (HR 5.05; 95% CI 3.97 to 6.42).Conclusions Males diagnosed with gynaecomastia are at higher risk of death, observed mainly in males with a known pre-existing risk factor of gynaecomastia. These findings will hopefully stimulate more awareness among healthcare providers to potentially apply interventions that aid in alleviating underlying risk factors in males with this condition.

Abstract Intracellular C‐terminal cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) is elevated in the brains of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and produces a peptide labeled APP‐C31 that is suspected to be involved in the pathology of AD. But details about the role of APP‐C31 in the development of the disease are not known. Here, this work reports that APP‐C31 directly interacts with the N‐terminal and self‐recognition regions of amyloid‐β40 (Aβ40) to form transient adducts, which facilitates the aggregation of both metal‐free and metal‐bound Aβ40 peptides and aggravates their toxicity. Specifically, APP‐C31 increases the perinuclear and intranuclear generation of large Aβ40 deposits and, consequently, damages the nucleus leading to apoptosis. The Aβ40‐induced degeneration of neurites and inflammation are also intensified by APP‐C31 in human neurons and murine brains. This study demonstrates a new function of APP‐C31 as an intracellular promoter of Aβ40 amyloidogenesis in both metal‐free and metal‐present environments, and may offer an interesting alternative target for developing treatments for AD that have not been considered thus far.

The frequency of forest fires worldwide has increased recently due to climate change, leading to severe and widespread damage. In this study, we investigate potential changes in the fire susceptibility of areas in South Korea arising from climate change. We constructed a dataset of large-scale forest fires from the past decade and employed it in machine learning models that integrate climatic, socioeconomic, and environmental variables to assess the risk of forest fires. According to the results of these models, the eastern region is identified as highly vulnerable to forest fires during the baseline period, while the western region is classified as relatively safe. However, in the future, certain areas along the western coast are predicted to become more susceptible to forest fires. Consequently, as climate change continues, the risk of domestic forest fires is expected to increase, leading to the need for proactive prevention measures and careful management. This study contributes to the understanding of forest fire occurrences under diverse climate scenarios.

This study conducted a systematic literature review focusing on peatlands studies in Southeast Asia, specifically in Jambi, South Sumatra, and the Riau province of Indonesia, covering the period from 2001 to 2023. To ensure the quality and rigor of the analyzed articles, a critical process and systematic review were employed. Journal articles were extracted using reputable resources, including Google Scholar and Scopus, to enhance the validity and reliability of the research results. We identified significant research topics based on region, province, and sector. Additionally, we synthesized the existing classification of ecosystem services, drawing on previous studies conducted in Indonesia. These services were categorized as provisioning, regulating, cultural, and supporting services. We also reviewed the classification of ecosystem service types based on peatland degradation and restoration. This study identified evidence of peatland intervention to evaluate ecosystem services in Indonesia. We found that large-scale cultivation and production of palm oil, local policies, and forest fires were the main intervening factors in Indonesian peatlands. Furthermore, Indonesian peatlands have undergone conversion to oil palm, timber, and crop plantations. It is imperative to substantiate the effectiveness of future peatland restoration plans and further refine the quantification of services provided by peatland ecosystems through cooperative projects.

Chrysanthemum morifolium is a valuable plant that contains a wide range of phytochemical compounds and exhibits various biological activities. Ethanol extracts from both the leaves and flowers of 17 different cultivars of C. morifolium were tested for antioxidant activities using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2′-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) assays and were quantitatively analyzed for 12 phenolic compounds using high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection. We found that the ‘Ford’ and ‘Raina’ cultivars demonstrated strong antioxidant abilities and high phenolic compound contents compared to other cultivars, while the flowers of ‘Cielo’ and the leaves of ‘White Cap’ exhibited low antioxidant capacity in both assays. The ‘Cielo’ cultivar also displayed the lowest compound contents. Additionally, in most samples, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid and 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid stood out as high-content compounds in the extracts. This study provides foundational knowledge that can be used for selecting appropriate C. morifolium cultivars for further research. Moreover, the ‘Ford’ and ‘Raina’ cultivars, containing high amounts of bioactive compounds and showing superior antioxidant ability, could be applied to produce health-beneficial products.
