Abstract Efficient energy conversion using ions as carriers necessitates membranes that sustain high permselectivity in high salinity conditions, which presents a significant challenge. This study addresses the issue by manipulating the linkages in covalent-organic-framework membranes, altering the distribution of electrostatic potentials and thereby influencing the short-range interactions between ions and membranes. We show that a charge-neutral covalent-organic-framework membrane with β-ketoenamine linkages achieves record permselectivity in high salinity environments. Additionally, the membrane retains its permselectivity under temperature gradients, providing a method for converting low-grade waste heat into electrical energy. Experiments reveal that with a 3 M KCl solution and a 50 K temperature difference, the membrane generates an output power density of 5.70 W m−2. Furthermore, guided by a short-range ionic screening mechanism, the membrane exhibits adaptable permselectivity, allowing reversible and controllable operations by finely adjusting charge polarity and magnitude on the membrane’s channel surfaces via ion adsorption. Notably, treatment with K3PO4 solutions significantly enhances permselectivity, resulting in a giant output power density of 20.22 W m−2, a 3.6-fold increase over the untreated membrane, setting a benchmark for converting low-grade heat into electrical energy.

Abstract Recent studies have shown that aqueous U(VI) ions can be transformed into U(VI) precipitates through electrocatalytic redox reactions for uranium recovery. However, there have been no reports of U(IV) solids, such as UO2, using electrochemical methods under ambient conditions since low-valence states of uranium are typically oxidized to U(VI) by O2 or H2O2. Here we developed a secondary metal ion-induced strategy for electrocatalytic production of U(IV) solids from U(VI) solutions using a catalyst consisting of atomically dispersed gallium on hollow nitrogen-doped carbon capsules (Ga-Nx-C). This method relies on the presence of secondary metal ions, e.g., alkaline earth metals, transition metals, lanthanide metals, and actinide metals, which promote the generation of UO2 or bimetallic U(IV)-containing oxides through a two-electron transfer process. No U(IV) solid products were generated in the presence of alkali metal ions. Mechanistic studies revealed that the strong binding affinity between U(IV) and alkaline earth metals (Ca2+/Mg2+/Sr2+/Ba2+), transition metals (Ni2+/Zn2+/Pb2+/Fe3+, etc.) and lanthanide/actinide metals (Ce4+/Eu3+/Th4+/La3+) suppressed re-oxidation of U(IV) to U(VI), leading to the generation of U(IV)O2 and Mx(M = Ce, Eu, Th, La)U(IV)yO2. This work provides fundamental insights into the electrochemical behavior of uranium in aqueous media, whilst guiding uranyl capture from nuclear waste and contaminated water.

Abstract Membrane reactors are known for their efficiency and superior operability compared to traditional batch processes, but their limited diversity poses challenges in meeting various reaction requirements. Herein, we leverage the molecular tunability of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) to broaden their applicability in membrane reactors. Our COF membrane demonstrates an exceptional ability to achieve complete conversion in just 0.63 s at room temperature—a benchmark in efficiency for Knoevenagel condensation. This performance significantly surpasses that of the corresponding homogeneous catalyst and COF powder by factors of 176 and 375 in turnover frequency, respectively. The enhanced concentration of reactants and the rapid removal of generated water within the membrane greatly accelerate the reaction, reducing the apparent activation energy. Consequently, this membrane reactor enables reactions that are unattainable using both COF powders and homogeneous catalysts. Considering the versatility, our findings highlight the substantial promise of COF-based membrane reactors in organic transformations.

Nature seamlessly integrates multiple functions for energy conversion, utilizing solar energy and salinity gradients as the primary drivers for ionic power generation. The creation of artificial membranes capable of finely controlling ion diffusion within nanoscale channels, driven by diverse forces, remains a challenging endeavor. In this study, we present an innovative approach: an ionic covalent-organic framework (COF) membrane constructed using chromophoric porphyrin units. The incorporation of ionic groups within these nanoconfined channels imparts the membrane with exceptional charge screening capabilities. Moreover, the membrane exhibits photoelectric responsivity, enhancing the ion conductivity upon exposure to light. As a result, this leads to a substantial increase in the output power density. In practical terms, when subjected to a salinity gradient of 0.5/0.01 M NaCl and exposed to light, the device achieved an outstanding peak power density of 18.0 ± 0.9 W m–2, surpassing the commercial benchmark by 3.6-fold. This innovative membrane design not only represents a significant leap forward in materials science but also opens promising avenues for advancing sustainable energy technologies.

Abstract Radioiodine capture from nuclear fuel waste and contaminated water sources is of enormous environmental importance, but remains technically challenging. Herein, we demonstrate robust covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with antiparallel stacked structures, excellent radiation resistance, and high binding affinities toward I2, CH3I, and I3 − under various conditions. A neutral framework (ACOF-1) achieves a high affinity through the cooperative functions of pyridine-N and hydrazine groups from antiparallel stacking layers, resulting in a high capacity of ~2.16 g/g for I2 and ~0.74 g/g for CH3I at 25 °C under dynamic adsorption conditions. Subsequently, post-synthetic methylation of ACOF-1 converted pyridine-N sites to cationic pyridinium moieties, yielding a cationic framework (namely ACOF-1R) with enhanced capacity for triiodide ion capture from contaminated water. ACOF-1R can rapidly decontaminate iodine polluted groundwater to drinking levels with a high uptake capacity of ~4.46 g/g established through column breakthrough tests. The cooperative functions of specific binding moieties make ACOF-1 and ACOF-1R promising adsorbents for radioiodine pollutants treatment under practical conditions.

Technetium-99 (99Tc), predominantly present as pertechnetate (99TcO4–), is a challenging contaminant in nuclear waste from artificial nuclear fission. The selective removal of 99TcO4– from nuclear waste and contaminated groundwater is complex due to (i) the acidic and intricate nature of high-level liquid wastes; (ii) the highly alkaline environment in low-activity level tank wastes, such as those at Hanford, and in high-level wastes at locations like Savannah River; and (iii) the potential for 99TcO4– to leak into groundwater, risking severe water pollution due to its high mobility. This Review focuses on recent developments in advanced porous materials, including metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and their amorphous counterparts, porous organic polymers (POPs). These materials have demonstrated exceptional effectiveness in adsorbing 99TcO4– and similar oxyanions. We comprehensively review the adsorption mechanisms of these anions with the adsorbents, employing macroscopic batch/column experiments, microscopic spectroscopic analyses, and theoretical calculations. In conclusion, we present our perspectives on potential future research directions, aiming to overcome current challenges and explore new opportunities in this area. Our goal is to encourage further research into the development of advanced porous materials for efficient 99TcO4– management.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) stand out as remarkable materials renowned for their exceptionally high surface area and large number of pores, making them invaluable for diverse sensing applications including gas, biomedical, chemical, and optical sensing. Traditional methods of molecule infusion and release often involve a large number of crystals with varying shapes and sizes, leading to averaged outcomes across a heterogeneous crystal population. In this study, we present continuous monitoring of the infusion and release dynamics of model drug molecules, specifically vitamin B12, within individual Tb-mesoMOF crystals. Our findings underscore the critical influence of crystal size and shape on the infusion and diffusion processes and corresponding color change, underscoring the necessity to account for these factors in the design of large-scale systems. Leveraging optical microscopy, we employed a histogram-based algorithm for image processing, enabling automated tracking of diffusion phenomena. This investigation offers crucial insights into the dynamics of these processes, laying the groundwork for optimizing parameters in future sensing systems.

Removing trace amounts of acetylene (C2H2) from ethylene (C2H4)-rich gas mixtures is vital for the supply of high-purity C2H4 to the chemical industry and plastics sector. However, selective removal of C2H2 is challenging due to the similar physical and chemical properties of C2H2 and C2H4. Here, we report a “single-molecule trap” strategy that utilizes electrostatic interactions between the one-dimensional (1D) channel of a covalent organic framework (denoted as COF-1) and C2H2 molecules to massively enhance the adsorption selectivity toward C2H2 over C2H4. C2H2 molecules are immobilized via interactions with the O atom of C=O groups, the N atom of C≡N groups, and the H atom of phenyl groups in 1D channels of COF-1. Due to its exceptionally high affinity for C2H2, COF-1 delivered a remarkable C2H2 uptake of 7.97 cm3/g at 298 K and 0.01 bar, surpassing all reported COFs and many other state-of-the-art adsorbents under similar conditions. Further, COF-1 demonstrated outstanding performance for the separation of C2H2 and C2H4 in breakthrough experiments under dynamic conditions. COF-1 adsorbed C2H2 at a capacity of 0.17 cm3/g at 2,000 s/g when exposed to 0.5 ml/min C2H4-rich gas mixture (99% C2H4) at 298 K, directly producing high-purity C2H4 gas at a rate of 3.95 cm3/g. Computational simulations showed that the strong affinity between C2H2 and the single-molecule traps of COF-1 were responsible for the excellent separation performance. COF-1 is also robust, providing a promising new strategy for the efficient removal of trace amounts of C2H2 in practical C2H4 purification.

Understanding the molecular-level mechanisms involved in transmembrane ion selectivity is essential for optimizing membrane separation performance. In this study, we reveal our observations regarding the transmembrane behavior of Li+ and Mg2+ ions as a response to the changing pore solvation abilities of the covalent-organic-framework (COF) membranes. These abilities were manipulated by adjusting the lengths of the oligoether segments attached to the pore channels. Through comparative experiments, we were able to unravel the relationships between pore solvation ability and various ion transport properties, such as partitioning, conduction, and selectivity. We also emphasize the significance of the competition between Li+ and Mg2+ with the solvating segments in modulating selectivity. We found that increasing the length of the oligoether chain facilitated ion transport; however, it was the COF membrane with oligoether chains containing two ethylene oxide units that exhibited the most pronounced discrepancy in transmembrane energy barrier between Li+ and Mg2+, resulting in the highest separation factor among all the evaluated membranes. Remarkably, under electro-driven binary-salt conditions, this specific COF membrane achieved an exceptional Li+/Mg2+ selectivity of up to 1352, making it one of the most effective membranes available for Li+/Mg2+ separation. The insights gained from this study significantly contribute to advancing our understanding of selective ion transport within confined nanospaces and provide valuable design principles for developing highly selective COF membranes. Advancing membranes with enhanced solute-solute selectivity is essential for expanding membrane technology applications, yet it presents a notable challenge. Drawing inspiration from the unparalleled selectivity of biological systems, which benefit from the sophisticated spatial organization of functionalities, we posit that manipulating the arrangement of the membrane's building blocks, an aspect previously given limited attention, can address this challenge. We demonstrate that optimizing the face-to-face orientation of building blocks during the assembly of covalent-organic-framework (COF) membranes improves ion-p interactions with multivalent ions. This optimization leads to extraordinary selectivity in differentiating between monovalent cations and anions from their multivalent counterparts, achieving selectivity factors of 214 for K+/Al3+ and 451 for NO3-/PO4 3-. Leveraging this attribute, the COF membrane facilitates the direct extraction of NaCl from seawater with a purity of 99.57%. These findings offer an alternative approach for designing highly selective membrane materials, offering promising prospects for advancing membrane-based technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
