1. The Relationship between Preschool Teacher's Attitudes toward Children's Literature and Their Attitudes toward Reading Books

Abstract

During the preschool period, children's interest in reading increases, and their attitudes toward books develop with the means and opportunities provided by their teachers. Teachers' attitudes develop during their undergraduate education as pre-service teachers. This study aims to reveal preschool pre-service teachers' attitudes toward children's literature and reading habits and the relationship between these attitudes. The relational screening model was used, and the study was conducted with 343 preschool pre-service teachers. The data were collected through the "Preservice Teacher's Attitude toward Children's Literature Scale (ACLS)" and "Pre-service Teacher's Attitudes toward Reading Habit Scale (ARHS)." The descriptive, difference and correlation analyses were used to analyze the collected data. As a result of the study, the attitudes of preschool pre-service teachers toward children's literature were found to be high, and their attitudes toward reading habits were moderate. Regarding the differences in the attitudes according to the variables, the following results were obtained: female pre-service teachers' attitudes toward children's literature and reading habits were significantly higher than males; attitudes of 4th-grade pre-service teachers' toward children's literature were significantly higher than others; regarding the attitudes toward reading habits, the only significant difference is in the "attitude toward the development of reading habit" sub-dimension, in favor 1st-grade pre-service teachers; attitudes toward children's literature showed a statistically significant difference in favor of pre-service teachers who took children's literature course, but taking this course did not affect their attitudes toward reading habits. A positive and weak relationship was found between preschool pre-service teachers' attitudes toward children's literature and reading habits.

Abstract

Breast cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide, with mammography screening as the most effective method for the early detection. Ensuring proper positioning in mammography is critical, as poor positioning can lead to diagnostic errors, increased patient stress, and higher costs due to recalls. Despite advancements in deep learning (DL) for breast cancer diagnostics, limited focus has been given to evaluating mammography positioning. This paper introduces a novel DL methodology to quantitatively assess mammogram positioning quality, specifically in mediolateral oblique (MLO) views using attention and coordinate convolution modules. Our method identifies key anatomical landmarks, such as the nipple and pectoralis muscle, and automatically draws a posterior nipple line (PNL), offering robust and inherently explainable alternative to well-known classification and regression-based approaches. We compare the performance of proposed methodology with various regression and classification-based models. The CoordAtt UNet model achieved the highest accuracy of 88.63% $\pm$ 2.84 and specificity of 90.25% $\pm$ 4.04, along with a noteworthy sensitivity of 86.04% $\pm$ 3.41. In landmark detection, the same model also recorded the lowest mean errors in key anatomical points and the smallest angular error of 2.42 degrees. Our results indicate that models incorporating attention mechanisms and CoordConv module increase the accuracy in classifying breast positioning quality and detecting anatomical landmarks. Furthermore, we make the labels and source codes available to the community to initiate an open research area for mammography, accessible at https://github.com/tanyelai/deep-breast-positioning.

Abstract

The fields of machine learning and artificial intelligence drive researchers to explore energy-efficient, brain-inspired new hardware. Reservoir computing encompasses recurrent neural networks for sequential data processing and matches the performance of other recurrent networks with less training and lower costs. However, traditional software-based neural networks suffer from high energy consumption due to computational demands and massive data transfer needs. Photonic reservoir computing overcomes this challenge with energy-efficient neuromorphic photonic integrated circuits or NeuroPICs. Here, we introduce a reservoir NeuroPIC used for modulation format identification in C-band telecommunication network monitoring. It is built on a silicon-on-insulator platform with a 4-port reservoir architecture consisting of a set of physical nodes connected via delay lines. We comprehensively describe the NeuroPIC design and fabrication, experimentally demonstrate its performance, and compare it with simulations. The NeuroPIC incorporates non-linearity through a simple digital readout and achieves close to 100% accuracy in identifying several configurations of quadrature amplitude modulation formats transmitted over 20 km of optical fiber at 32 GBaud symbol rate. The NeuroPIC performance is robust against fabrication imperfections like waveguide propagation loss, phase randomization, etc. and delay line length variations. Furthermore, the experimental results exceeded numerical simulations, which we attribute to enhanced signal interference in the experimental NeuroPIC output. 8. Leveraging Simulation-Based Model Preconditions for Fast Action Parameter Optimization with Multiple Models

Abstract

Optimizing robotic action parameters is a significant challenge for manipulation tasks that demand high levels of precision and generalization. Using a model-based approach, the robot must quickly reason about the outcomes of different actions using a predictive model to find a set of parameters that will have the desired effect. The model may need to capture the behaviors of rigid and deformable objects, as well as objects of various shapes and sizes. Predictive models often need to trade-off speed for prediction accuracy and generalization. This paper proposes a framework that leverages the strengths of multiple predictive models, including analytical, learned, and simulation-based models, to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of action parameter optimization. Our approach uses Model Deviation Estimators (MDEs) to determine the most suitable predictive model for any given state-action parameters, allowing the robot to select models to make fast and precise predictions. We extend the MDE framework by not only learning sim-to-real MDEs, but also sim-to-sim MDEs. Our experiments show that these sim-to-sim MDEs provide significantly faster parameter optimization as well as a basis for efficiently learning sim-to-real MDEs through finetuning. The ease of collecting sim-to-sim training data also allows the robot to learn MDEs based directly on visual inputs and local material properties.

9. Influence of mechanical compliance of the substrate on the morphology of nanoporous gold thin films

Abstract

Nanoporous gold (np-Au) has found use in applications ranging from catalysis to biosensing where pore morphology plays a critical role in performance. While morphology evolution of bulk np-Au has been widely studied, knowledge about its thin film form is limited. This work hypothesizes that mechanical compliance of the thin film substrate can play a critical role in the morphology evolution. Via experimental and finite-element-analysis approaches, we investigate the morphological variation in np-Au thin films deposited on compliant silicone (PDMS) substrates of a range of thicknesses anchored on rigid glass supports and compare those to the morphology of np-Au deposited on glass. More macroscopic (10s to 100s of microns) cracks and discrete islands form in the np-Au films on PDMS compared to glass. Conversely, uniformly-distributed microscopic (100s of nanometers) cracks form in greater numbers in the np-Au films on glass than on PDMS, with the cracks located within the discrete islands. The np-Au films on glass also show larger ligament and pore sizes possibly due to higher residual stresses compared to the np-Au/PDMS films. The effective elastic modulus of the substrate layers decreases with increasing PDMS thickness, resulting in secondary np-Au morphology effects including a reduction in macroscopic crack-to-crack distance, an increase in microscopic crack coverage, and a widening of the microscopic cracks. However, changes in the ligament/pore widths with PDMS thickness are negligible, allowing for independent optimization for cracking. We expect these results to inform the integration of functional np-Au films on compliant substrates into emerging applications, including flexible electronics.

Abstract

The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in deep learning, has significantly impacted radiology, introducing an array of AI solutions for interpretative tasks. This paper provides radiology departments with a practical guide for selecting and integrating AI solutions, focusing on interpretative tasks that require the active involvement of radiologists. Our approach is not to list available applications or review scientific evidence, as this information is readily available in previous studies; instead, we concentrate on the essential factors radiology departments must consider when choosing AI solutions. These factors include clinical relevance, performance and validation, implementation and integration, clinical usability, costs and return on investment, and regulations, security, and privacy. We illustrate each factor with hypothetical scenarios to provide a clearer understanding and practical relevance. Through our experience and literature review, we provide insights and a practical roadmap for radiologists to navigate the complex landscape of AI in radiology. We aim to assist in making informed decisions that enhance diagnostic precision, improve patient outcomes, and streamline workflows, thus contributing to the advancement of radiological practices and patient care.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The etiology and progression of sporadic Alzheimer's Disease (AD) have been studied for decades. One proposed mechanism is that amyloid-beta (Aβ) proteins induce neuroinflammation, synapse loss, and neuronal cell death. Microglia play an especially important role in Aβ clearance, and alterations in microglial function due to aging or disease may result in Aβ accumulation and deleterious effects on neuronal function. However, studying these complex factors in vivo , where numerous confounding processes exist, is challenging, and until recently, in vitro models have not allowed sustained culture of microglia, astrocytes and neurons in the same culture. Here, we employ a tri-culture model of rat primary neurons, astrocytes, and microglia and compare it to co-culture (neurons and astrocytes) and mono-culture enriched for microglia to study microglial function (i.e., motility and Aβ clearance) and proteomic response to exogenous Aβ. METHODS: We established cortical co-culture (neurons and astrocytes), tri-culture (neurons, astrocytes, and microglia), and mono-culture (microglia) from perinatal rat pups. On days in vitro (DIV) 7 - 14, the cultures were exposed to fluorescently-labeled Aβ (FITC-Aβ) particles for varying durations. Images were analyzed to determine the number of FITC-Aβ particles after specific lengths of exposure. A group of cells were stained for βIII-tubulin, GFAP, and Iba1 for morphological analysis via quantitative fluorescence microscopy. Cytokine profiles from conditioned media were obtained. Live-cell imaging with images acquired every 5 minutes for 4 hours was employed to extract microglia motility parameters (e.g., Euclidean distance, migration speed, directionality ratio). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: FITC-Aβ particles were more effectively cleared in the tri-culture compared to the co-culture. This was attributed to microglia engulfing FITC-Aβ particles, as confirmed via epifluorescence and confocal microscopy. Adding FITC-Aβ significantly increased the size of microglia, but had no significant effect on neuronal surface coverage or astrocyte size. Analysis of the cytokine profile upon FITC-Aβ addition revealed a significant increase in proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-6) in tri-culture, but not co-culture. In addition, Aβ addition altered microglia motility marked by swarming-like motion with decreased Euclidean distance yet unaltered speed. These results highlight the importance of cell-cell communication in microglia function (e.g., motility and Aβ clearance) and the utility of the tri-culture model to further investigate microglia dysfunction in AD.

Abstract

BackgroundVagal afferent neurons represent the key neurosensory branch of the gut-brain axis, which describes the bidirectional communication between the gastrointestinal system and the brain. These neurons are important for detecting and relaying sensory information from the periphery to the central nervous system to modulate feeding behavior, metabolism, and inflammation. Confounding variables complicate the process of isolating the role of the vagal afferents in mediating these physiological processes. Therefore, we developed a microfluidic model of the sensory branch of the gut-brain axis. We show that this microfluidic model successfully compartmentalizes the cell body and neurite terminals of the neurons, thereby simulates the anatomical layout of these neurons to more accurately study physiologically-relevant processes.MethodsWe implemented a primary rat vagal afferent neuron culture into a microfluidic platform consisting of two concentric chambers interconnected with radial microchannels. The microfluidic platform separated cell bodies from neurite terminals of vagal afferent neurons. We then introduced physiologically-relevant gastrointestinal effector molecules at the nerve terminals and assessed their retrograde transport along the neurite or capacity to elicit an electrophysiological response using live cell calcium imaging.ResultsThe angle of microchannel outlets dictated the probability of neurites growing into a chamber versus tracking along chamber walls. When the neurite terminals were exposed to fluorescently-labeled cholera toxin subunit B, the proteins were taken up and retrogradely transported along the neurites over the course of 24 h. Additionally, mechanical perturbation (e.g., rinsing) of the neurite terminals significantly increased intracellular calcium concentration in the distal soma. Finally, membrane-displayed receptor for capsaicin was expressed and trafficked along newly projected neurites, as revealed by confocal microscopy.ConclusionsIn this work, we developed a microfluidic device that can recapitulate the anatomical layout of vagal afferent neurons in vitro. We demonstrated two physiologically-relevant applications of the platforms: retrograde transport and electrophysiological response. We expect this tool to enable controlled studies on the role of vagal afferent neurons in the gut-brain axis.

26. The Relationship between D’Amico and ISUP Risk Classifications and 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT SUVmax Values in Newly Diagnosed Prostate Cancers

Abstract

Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between pathological and clinical risk classifications in newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients, and 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT data and serum Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) values. Method: A total of 203 patients who were diagnosed with prostate cancer between 2019 and 2023, who had not yet received treatment and who underwent 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT for staging purposes were included in this study. Results: There was a substantial correlation between D’Amico risk classification, Gleason score, ISUP classification, and the presence or absence of metastasis (p < 0.0001). The median SUVmax value of the prostate gland and the D’Amico risk classification were statistically significantly correlated. (p < 0.0001). There was a statistically significant correlation between the ISUP classification and the PSA value and prostate gland SUVmax value (p < 0.0001). There was a significant correlation between the median SUVmax values of the prostate gland at the time of diagnosis and the patients with and without metastases (p < 0.0001). According to the data obtained from ROC analysis, patients with prostate gland SUVmax values of 8.75 and above were found to have a high probability of metastasis with a sensitivity of 78.9% and a specificity of 59.05%. Conclusion: Our study showed that 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT is a highly effective method for staging newly diagnosed high-risk prostate cancer. The probability of metastasis was found to be dramatically increased in Gleason 8 and above. According to D’Amico risk classification, metastasis was detected in at least half of high-risk patients. Since the sensitivity of metastasis was 78.9% in patients with prostate gland SUVmax value above 8.75, we think that these patients should be carefully reported in terms of metastasis.

Aim: Reduction mammoplasty (RM) operations are frequently performed for breast reduction and asymmetry correction. Evaluation of these materials is important in patients at high risk of developing invasive breast carcinoma (IBC) to detect precancerous lesions or lesions that may accompany cancer. This study aimed to evaluate the histopathologic and clinical features of proliferative and non-proliferative lesions in RM materials.Material and Methods: In this study, 214 cases (402 specimens) of RM operated for aesthetic purposes (except gynecomastia) at Eskişehir Osmangazi University Hospital between the years 2020 and 2023 were included. The age of cases, location and bilaterality of the lesions, and proliferative and non-proliferative lesions were evaluated.Results: The mean age of RM cases was 38.5±10.9 years. The most common lesion was apocrine metaplasia in RM materials. Proliferative and non-proliferative lesions were found bilaterally in 24.8% (n=53) of all RM cases. The most common bilaterality was intraductal papilloma and the most common unilateral lesion was ductal ectasia. 0.2% (n=1) case of ductal carcinoma in situ and 0.9% (n=4) cases of lobular carcinoma in situ was found.Conclusion: Detection of high-risk lesions is important for appropriate clinical follow-up. In this study, high-risk proliferative lesions were found considerably in RM cases. Patients with high-risk proliferative lesions should be followed up more closely in terms of cancer risk in the future. In addition, it is crucial to perform a careful macroscopic examination in mammoplasty operations performed for aesthetic purposes to avoid missing these lesions.

Abstract Introduction To better target stroke awareness efforts (pre and post first stroke) and thereby decrease the time window for help-seeking, this study aims to assess quantitatively whether stroke awareness is associated with appropriate help-seeking at symptom onset, and to investigate qualitatively why this may (not) be the case. Methods This study conducted in a German regional stroke network comprises a convergent quantitative-dominant, hypothesis-driven mixed methods design including 462 quantitative patient questionnaires combined with qualitative interviews with 28 patients and seven relatives. Quantitative associations were identified using Pearson’s correlation analysis. Open coding was performed on interview transcripts before the quantitative results were used to further focus qualitative analysis. Joint display analysis was conducted to mix data strands. Cooperation with the Patient Council of the Department of Neurology ensured patient involvement in the study. Results Our hypothesis that stroke awareness would be associated with appropriate help-seeking behaviour at stroke symptom onset was partially supported by the quantitative data, i.e. showing associations between some dimensions of stroke awareness and appropriate help-seeking, but not others. For example, knowing stroke symptoms is correlated with recognising one’s own symptoms as stroke (r = 0.101; p = 0.030*; N = 459) but not with no hesitation before calling help (r = 0.003; p = 0.941; N = 457). A previous stroke also makes it more likely to recognise one’s own symptoms as stroke (r = 0.114; p = 0.015*; N = 459), but not to be transported by emergency ambulance (r = 0.08; p = 0.872; N = 462) or to arrive at the hospital on time (r = 0.02; p = 0.677; N = 459). Qualitative results showed concordance, discordance or provided potential explanations for quantitative findings. For example, qualitative data showed processes of denial on the part of patients and the important role of relatives in initiating appropriate help-seeking behaviour on patients’ behalf. Conclusions Our study provides insights into the complexities of the decision-making process at stroke symptom onset. As our findings suggest processes of denial and inabilities to translate abstract disease knowledge into correct actions, we recommend to address relatives as potential saviours of loved ones, increased use of specific situational examples (e.g. lying on the bathroom floor) and the involvement of patient representatives in the preparation of informational resources and campaigns. Future research should include mixed methods research from one sample and more attention to potential reporting inconsistencies.

Abstract

Non–steroidal anti–inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a widely prescribed medication class that is used in the treatment of numerous conditions worldwide. Of these drugs, naproxen is the most commonly used NSAID. Following administration, non–steroidal anti–inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as naproxen are eliminated from the body in either their original chemical form or as metabolites, ultimately entering the aquatic environment. The current study sought to show the impacts of naproxen on the oxidant/antioxidant status of Gammarus pulex, an aquatic invertebrate (Amphipoda). Gammarus pulex were exposed to sublethal concentrations of naproxen (3.44, 6.87 and 13.75 mg·L-1) for 96 hours (h). Whole body tissue samples were collected after 24, 48 and 96 h of exposure and analysed to determine the oxidant/antioxidant status by quantifying malondialdehyde (MDA) and total glutathione levels (GSH), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activities of the G. pulex. The level of MDA exhibited a remarkable increase, while the endogenous GSH level showed a significant depletion in tested whole body tissues in a time–dependent manner after naproxen treatment of G. pulex. Abstract

Aim: Gasdermin-D (GSDMD) and pannexin-1 (PANX1), which are proinflammatory proteins, may be involved in the pathogenesis of complications in pregnant women with obesity. We aimed to investigate the expression of GSDMD and PANX1 biochemically in samples of maternal omental and placental tissue obtained from pregnant women with or without obesity, and their correlation with maternal, obstetric, and fetal/neonatal variables. Methods: The prospective observational study included 79 pregnant women who underwent elective cesarean sections with a pregnancy between 37 and 41 weeks from December 2021 to April 2022. They were divided into three study groups according to their body mass index (BMI): normal weight (with a BMI 30) (n=26). Omental and placental GSDMD and PANX1 levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay between the groups. Results: In the homogenate of omental tissue, the median levels of GSDMD and PANX1 protein in the overweight and obese groups were significantly lower than those in the normal weight groups (p=0.0154 and p=0.0184, respectively). In the placental tissue samples, the median levels of GSDMD and PANX1 proteins in the normal weight, overweight, and obese groups were similar. Conclusion: GSDMD and PANX1 expressions were shown for the first time in the omentum and placenta together; which has the potential to be used as a predictive and diagnostic test panel after further studies in obese pregnant women.

Abstract

Objective: In the current study, we aimed to ascertain the levels of heavy metals and radioactive elements in the ovarian follicular fluids of pregnant and non-pregnant Kyrgyz mares. Materials and Methods: To this end, follicular fluids were obtained from 49 Kyrgyz mares aged 3–5 years. The mares were in various stages of pregnancy (Group 1, n = 27) or were non-pregnant (Group 2, n = 22). We measured the levels of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), antimony (Sb), cobalt (Co), potassium (K), uranium (U), nickel (Ni), and thorium (Th) in follicular fluids using atomic emission mass spectrometry. Subsequently, the data were statistically analyzed according to whether the mare was pregnant or not, the pregnancy stage, the presence or absence of the corpus luteum in the ovaries, the corpus luteum's diameter if present, and the presence or absence and diameter of follicles. Results: We found that K levels were higher in non-pregnant mares (0.00564 ± 0.000590 ppm, p = 0.009). Furthermore, Ni (0.01033 ± 0.001880 ppm, p = 0.07) and K (0.00563 ± 0.000498 ppm, p = 0.026) levels were higher in mares with a follicle diameter of 1–3 cm. However, these results did not change according to the month of pregnancy, number of follicles, presence or absence of the corpus luteum in the ovaries, number of corpora lutea, and their diameters. Conclusion: Thus, we concluded that heavy metal and radioactive element levels in the ovarian follicular fluids of Kyrgyz mares do not significantly change with pregnancy status, and there are limited detrimental effects of pollution on the follicular fluids. Abstract

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%).
