Technological affordances have changed how people consume news; more people report scrolling headlines than actually reading stories. Despite the commonality of headline scrolling, we know relatively little about how headlines differ from full stories, and the consequences of these unique information environments for public opinion and political behavior. In this study, we use a replica newsfeed to track the stories participants scroll by and click on (N = 1,051), and complement this with a content analysis of the headlines and stories. Our findings show that headlines are more negative in tone when compared to stories and that people are more likely to click on negative headlines. Despite the contrast in information environments, with the exception of affective polarization, we find little difference between those who are more likely to scroll headlines and those who click on stories across a variety of political behaviors. Smart devices, such as soft robots, artificial organs, and soft actuators, require materials that adapt their morphologies and properties in response to their environment. These materials can be obtained through the composition of different types of materials that exhibit different responses to environmental stimuli, arranged in a rational spatial configuration. We achieved unique responsive materials by forming interfaces and surfaces of appropriate materials using the sol–gel method. In recent decades, we have proposed the use of wrinkles and nano-brushes on sol–gel-derived materials for various sophisticated applications, such as micropattern fabrication, wettability control, and linear actuators for size-selective transportation. This account introduces environment-responsive materials with rational interfaces via the sol–gel method, particularly those characterized by surface morphology. 2D materials are solid microscopic flakes with a‐few‐Angstrom thickness possessing some of the largest surface‐to‐volume ratios known. Altering their conformation state from a flat flake to a scroll or fiber offers a synergistic association of properties arising from 2D and 1D nanomaterials. However, a combination of the long‐range electrostatic and short‐range solvation forces produces an interlayer repulsion that has to be overcome, making scrolling 2D materials without disrupting the pristine structure a challenging task. Herein, a facile method is presented to alter the 2D materials' inter‐layer interactions by confining organic salts onto their basal area, forming 2D‐confined electrolytes. The confined electrolytes produce local charge inhomogeneities, which can conjugate across the interlayer gap, binding the two surfaces. This allows the 2D‐confined electrolytes to behave as polyelectrolytes within a higher dimensional order (2D → 1D) and form robust nanofibers with distinct electronic properties. The method is not material‐specific and the resulting fibers are tightly bound even though the crystal structure of the basal plane remains unaltered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mouse wheel may induce physical fatigue by requiring users to clutch the wheel repeatedly when scrolling long distances. To address this problem, some mouse products provide a free-spinning mode in which users can spin the wheel to initiate inertial scrolling. However, the time and effort required to toggle the free-spinning mode may lower the usability of the mouse wheel. To enable inertial scrolling without the overhead of mode switching, we present TouchWheel, a physical mouse wheel with touch sensitivity and a virtual wheel model that enables users to perform flick-and-stop operations as they do on touchscreens. A user experiment revealed that participants could actively use TouchWheel's flick-and-stop operation according to their different scrolling needs. For tasks that frequently required long-distance scrolling, TouchWheel outperformed a normal mouse wheel in task completion time and required fewer clutching and mode-switching actions than the normal mouse wheel and a spin-enabled mouse wheel. Abstract Scrolling is a widely used mean to interact with visual displays, usually to move content to a certain target location on the display. Understanding how user scroll might identify potentially suboptimal use and allows to infer users’ intentions. In the present study, we examined where users click on a scrollbar depending on the intended scrolling action. In two online experiments, click positions were systematically adapted to the intended scrolling action. Click position selection could not be explained as strict optimization of the distance traveled with the cursor, memory load, or motor-cognitive factors. By contrast, for identical scrolling actions click positions strongly depended on the context and on previous scrolls. The behavior of our participants closely resembled behavior observed for manipulation of other physical devices and suggested a simple heuristic of movement planning. The results have implications for modeling human–computer interaction and may contribute to predicting user behavior.
