Abstract

While the sources of the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux detected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory are still largely unknown, one of the promising methods used towards understanding this is investigating the potential temporal and spatial correlations between neutrino alerts and the electromagnetic radiation from blazars. We report on the multiwavelength target-of-opportunity observations of the blazar B3 2247+381, taken in response to an IceCube multiplet alert for a cluster of muon neutrino events compatible with the source location between May 20, 2022 and November 10, 2022. B3 2247+381 was not detected with VERITAS during this time period. The source was found to be in a low-flux state in the optical, ultraviolet and gamma-ray bands for the time interval corresponding to the neutrino event, but was detected in the hard X-ray band with NuSTAR during this period. We find the multiwavelength spectral energy distribution is well described using a simple one-zone leptonic synchrotron self-Compton radiation model. Moreover, assuming the neutrinos originate from hadronic processes within the jet, the neutrino flux would be accompanied by a photon flux from the cascade emission, and the integrated photon flux required in such a case would significantly exceed the total multiwavelength fluxes and the VERITAS upper limits presented here. The lack of flaring activity observed with VERITAS, combined with the low multiwavelength flux levels, and given the significance of the neutrino excess is at 3$\sigma$ level (uncorrected for trials), makes B3 2247+381 an unlikely source of the IceCube multiplet. Abstract

We present a search for the diffuse extremely-high-energy neutrino flux using $12.6$ years of IceCube data. The non-observation of neutrinos with energies well above $10 \, \mathrm{PeV}$ constrains the all-flavor neutrino flux at $10^{18} \, \mathrm{eV}$ to a level of $E^2 \Phi_{\nu_e + \nu_\mu + \nu_\tau} \simeq 10^{-8} \, \mathrm{GeV} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-2} \, \mathrm{s}^{-1} \, \mathrm{sr}^{-1}$, the most stringent limit to date. Using this data, we constrain the proton fraction of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) above $\simeq 30 \, \mathrm{EeV}$ to be $\lesssim 70\,$% (at $90\,$% CL) if the cosmological evolution of the sources is comparable to or stronger than the star formation rate. This result complements direct air-shower measurements by being insensitive to uncertainties associated with hadronic interaction models. It is the first such result to disfavor the ``proton-only" hypothesis for UHECRs using neutrino data.

Abstract

In the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a signal of astrophysical neutrinos is obscured by backgrounds from atmospheric neutrinos and muons produced in cosmic-ray interactions. IceCube event selections used to isolate the astrophysical neutrino signal often focus on t/he morphology of the light patterns recorded by the detector. The analyses presented here use the new IceCube Enhanced Starting Track Event Selection (ESTES), which identifies events likely generated by muon neutrino interactions within the detector geometry, focusing on neutrino energies of 1-500 TeV with a median angular resolution of 1.4{\deg}. Selecting for starting track events filters out not only the atmospheric-muon background, but also the atmospheric-neutrino background in the southern sky. This improves IceCube's muon neutrino sensitivity to southern-sky neutrino sources, especially for Galactic sources that are not expected to produce a substantial flux of neutrinos above 100 TeV. In this work, the ESTES sample was applied for the first time to searches for astrophysical sources of neutrinos, including a search for diffuse neutrino emission from the Galactic plane. No significant excesses were identified from any of the analyses; however, constraining limits are set on the hadronic emission from TeV gamma-ray Galactic plane objects and models of the diffuse Galactic plane neutrino flux., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. Abstract

We report a search for high-energy astrophysical neutrino multiplets, detections of multiple neutrino clusters in the same direction within 30 days, based on an analysis of 11.4 years of IceCube data. A new search method optimized for transient neutrino emission with a monthly time scale is employed, providing a higher sensitivity to neutrino fluxes. This result is sensitive to neutrino transient emission, reaching per-flavor flux of approximately $10^{-10}\ {\rm erg}\ {\rm cm}^{-2}\ {\rm sec}^{-1}$ from the Northern sky in the energy range $E\gtrsim 50$~TeV. The number of doublets and triplets identified in this search is compatible with the atmospheric background hypothesis, which leads us to set limits on the nature of neutrino transient sources with emission timescales of one month.

Abstract

Purpose: Occasionally, lobes displace after lobectomy, which is referred to as "lobar shifting". This study aimed to evaluate the effect of lobar shifting on postoperative pulmonary function., Methods: We analyzed the records of 761 patients who underwent lobectomy between 2012 and 2022. The patients were categorized based on three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) images into those with (shift group: n = 510) and those without (non-shift group: n = 251) their postoperative subject bronchus shifting toward the head or dorsal side. The preservation rate of forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1.0) was compared between the two groups. Several factors were investigated to identify the cause of lobar shifting., Results: FEV1.0 preservation rates, excluding left upper lobectomy, were significantly better in the shift group than in the non-shift group (all patients: 87.9% vs. 84.9%, p < 0.001; right upper lobectomy: 90.1% vs. 85.4%, p = 0.002; right lower lobectomy: 90.0% vs. 84.5%, p = 0.002; left upper lobectomy: 82.0% vs. 83.9%, p = 0.43; left lower lobectomy: 90.0% vs. 85.2%, p = 0.01). Factors that correlated with lobar shifting included age (p < 0.001), adhesions (p < 0.001), and lobulation (p = 0.001)., Conclusions: Lobar shifting may benefit postoperative pulmonary function, excluding after left upper lobectomy. 6. Mechanistic Insights into the Apoptosis of Cancer Cells Induced by a Kinase-Responsive Peptide Amphiphile.

Abstract

Organelle targeting is a useful approach in drug development for cancer therapy. Peptide amphiphiles are good candidates for targeting specific organelles because they can be engineered into a wide range of molecular structures, enabling customization for specific functional needs. We have developed a peptide amphiphile, C16-(EY)3, that can respond to tyrosine kinase activity and undergo phosphorylation inside cancer cells. C16-(EY)3 selectively induced apoptosis in cancer cells that overexpressed tyrosine kinase. The self-assembly of peptide amphiphiles on the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane reduced the ER membrane fluidity and triggered ER stress. The mechanism of the cancer cell death induced by C16-(EY)3 was shown to involve phosphorylation by tyrosine kinase, ER stress induction, and the subsequent activation of caspase-4, -12, and -9, which ultimately triggered apoptosis through the activation of caspase-3 and -7. In vivo studies further validated the antitumor efficacy of C16-(EY)3, as transcutaneous administration of the peptide amphiphile inhibited tumor growth in mice. This study elucidated the mechanism of apoptosis induced by the peptide amphiphile, indicating the potential of peptide amphiphiles as organelle-targeting cancer therapeutics and providing a novel strategy for the development of selective and potent anticancer drugs., (© 2025 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

7. Anterior-Posterior Abdominal Diameter and Waist Circumference Have Comparable Predictive Ability for Visceral Fat Area.

Abstract

Objective: Waist circumference measurement is commonly used as a method for predicting the visceral fat area. However, waist circumference is difficult to measure, and there is a large margin of error between measurements. Visceral fat is adipose tissue that accumulates in the abdominal cavity, and when it accumulates in excess, abdominal computed tomography reveals a prominent protrusion of the anterior-posterior diameter of the abdomen in a coronal section at the umbilicus level. Individuals with obesity often show forward abdominal protrusions. This study aimed to verify whether the anterior-posterior abdominal diameter can be used as a proxy for waist circumference to predict the visceral fat area., Methods: A total of 231 patients with diabetes who were admitted to Tokyo Medical University Hospital and whose visceral fat area was measured using computed tomography were enrolled. Whether the waist circumference and anterior-posterior abdominal diameter were correlated with the visceral fat area was determined, and their ability to predict the visceral fat area was compared., Results: The visceral fat area was significantly correlated with both waist circumference ( r  = 0.759, p  < 0.001) and anterior-posterior abdominal diameter ( r =  0.774, p  < 0.001), and the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves used to predict the visceral fat area were 0.923 (95% confidence interval: 0.878-0.967) and 0.939 (95% confidence interval: 0.905-0.974), respectively., Conclusions: The anterior-posterior abdominal diameter can be used as an alternative to waist circumference for predicting the visceral fat area. 8. Epidemiological trends in head and neck cancer in Nara Prefecture, Japan, from 2000-2021: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Objective: Epidemiological surveys were conducted in Nara Prefecture, Japan, to determine the prevalence of head and neck cancer in the region since 1986., Methods: This study examined the dynamics of visits to 18 medical institutions treating head and neck cancer in Nara Prefecture from 2000 to 2021., Results: A total of 8,605 patients were registered, with 4,788 being male and 3,787 female. These included 3,603 thyroid, 2,215 oral, 1,164 laryngeal, 645 hypopharyngeal, 512 oropharyngeal, 326 nasal sinus, and 286 salivary gland cancer cases. A marked increase in subsite was observed in oropharyngeal, oral, and hypopharyngeal cancers, whereas laryngeal cancer remained unchanged. The number of registered patients increased every year, with 547 new patients registered in 2019, compared to 249 in 2000. However, the number of registered cases decreased by nearly 100 cases after 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic (453 cases in 2020 and 420 cases in 2021)., Conclusions: This study is distinctive as it comprehensively surveys all departments within Nara Prefecture involved in managing head and neck cancer., (Copyright © 2025. 9. Hypertriglyceridemia and younger age are associated with effectiveness of growth hormone therapy on hepatic steatosis.

Abstract

Adult growth hormone deficiency (AGHD) is often accompanied with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Although some studies reported that MASLD is ameliorated by growth hormone replacement therapy (GHRT), the characteristics of AGHD that are associated with an improvement of hepatic steatosis by GHRT remain unknown. We aimed to investigate whether GHRT affects hepatic lipid accumulation as well as biochemical parameters, and investigated the association between these parameters (UMIN000044989). Thirty people with AGHD were recruited, and assigned to either the GHRT group or the non-GHRT group. Serum laboratory data were analyzed before and after GHRT. Hepatic lipid content was evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging-proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF). Correlations between MRI-PDFF and other clinical parameters were investigated. Twenty-nine people completed this study (19 in the GHRT group and 10 in the non-GHRT group). In the GHRT group, significant decreases in MRI-PDFF and serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase were observed after the treatment. The decrease in MRI-PDFF levels after GHRT significantly correlated with initial MRI-PDFF, triglyceride (TG), lactate dehydrogenase, and ALT levels, and age. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that younger age and high serum TG levels were independent predictors of a decrease in MRI-PDFF levels. GHRT in people with AGHD significantly reduced lipid accumulation in the liver on MRI, and improved serum liver parameters. Age and serum TG levels were found to be associated with the effectiveness of GHRT.

They performed sitting and standing reaching tasks, as well as walking while wearing a VO2 Master respiratory gas analyzer and ASP devices on both the paretic and non-paretic sides. The METs values recorded by the ASP were compared with those obtained using a VO2 Master respiratory gas analyzer. Pearson's correlation coefficients were calculated for each task, and Bland-Altman plots were used to assess the agreement between the two methods., Results: The ASP demonstrated good concurrent validity, with correlation coefficients of 0.71 and 0.74 for the sitting reaching task, 0.75 and 0.79 for the standing reaching task, and 0.83 and 0.85 for walking when the ASP was placed on the paretic and non-paretic sides, respectively. Bland-Altman analysis indicated no significant fixed or proportional errors. The ASP accurately measures METs whether worn on the affected or unaffected side of the waist., Conclusion: The ASP provides valid measurements of physical activity during walking and reaching tasks in patients with subacute stroke. 11. Effect of Hydrolysate Derived from Subcritical Seawater Treatment of Buckwheat Waste on the Growth of Lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L.).

Abstract

This study explores the effects of a subcritical seawater treatment (SST) on buckwheat waste (BW), and the use of the hydrolysate as a liquid fertilizer to improve the growth of lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L.). Three temperature treatments (110 °C, 170 °C, 230 °C) were used for the SST, and the ionic composition in the seawater achieved the depolymerization and degradation of BW. The X-ray diffraction of the residual solids showed that the structure of BW was destroyed. Compared with seawater, the hydrolysate contained higher amounts of elements beneficial to plant growth, such as N, P, K, and organic compounds such as phenolics and sugars, as a result of the degradation of BW caused by the SST. The hydrolysate was tested as a liquid fertilizer (treatments H 110°C , H 170°C , H 230°C ) to irrigate lettuce. The content of proteins, phenolics, and chlorophyll, as well as the weight of the lettuce in the H 110°C and H 170°C treatments, were significantly higher than those in the seawater and the H 230°C irrigation treatments ( p < 0.05). The hydrolysate from the SST of BW, being rich in various organic and inorganic nutrients, can act as a liquid fertilizer that promotes the growth of lettuce, whereas hydrolysate from higher SST temperatures might inhibit the growth of lettuce, because of the excessive total nitrogen and organic acid.

Abstract

Human dentin performs its function throughout life, even though it is not remodeled like bone. Therefore, dentin must have extreme durability against daily repetitive loading. Elucidating its durability requires a comprehensive understanding of its shape, structure, and anisotropy at various levels of its structure. However, few studies have examined the nanostructure of dentin as a whole and not much is known about its age-related changes. Our aim is to characterize the mineral particle characteristics of human dentin and age-related changes using synchrotron scanning small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering. 30 molar and premolar teeth extracted from 16 to 77-year-old individuals for orthodontic or periodontal reasons were used. Synchrotron-based X-ray scattering was employed to acquire two-dimensional maps of nanostructural features. These maps revealed a negative gradient of particle size toward the pulp chamber. The preferential orientation of particles was position-dependent, with a higher orientation in the area from the pulp horn to the cusp tip and root region. These patterns were maintained in different tooth types. The mineral particle thickness of the inner crown increased significantly with age. This increase could relate to the filling of tubules and, therefore, likely contribute to the deterioration of the mechanical performance of teeth with age., Competing Interests: Declarations. Abstract

Introduction: Avelumab (Ave) is approved for metastatic urothelial carcinoma (mUC) maintenance therapy and prolongs overall survival (OS). We explored trends related to Ave treatment of mUC patients., Methods: A total of 72 patients with mUC treated with first-line chemotherapy, from January 2019 to November 2022, at our affiliated institutions, were analyzed. We compared clinical parameters and the prognosis of patients treated with Ave (n = 43) because of progression during first-line chemotherapy, with untreated patients (Ave-untreated; n = 29). Among the Ave-treated group, we classified patients showing a complete or partial response or stable disease in their best response to Ave maintenance therapy as Ave-suitable patients; these were retrospectively analyzed. Potential prognostic factors, including the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) for determining patients suitable for Ave, were evaluated., Results: The basic clinical parameters of patients when first-line treatment was initiated were not statistically different between the two groups. The Ave-suitable group (median 26.6 months, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 19.4-not reached [NR]) showed significantly longer median OS after first-line treatment than the Ave-untreated group (median 12.0 months, 95% CI: 7.5-NR) with tolerable adverse events. The cut-off values of prognostic factors were set by the receiver operating characteristic curve. Low age and GNRI sustainability were revealed as significant prognostic factors for being Ave-suitable both in univariate and multivariate analysis., Conclusion: In mUC, Ave maintenance prolonged OS within tolerable safety profiles. Abstract

In this study, we aimed to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility of Staphylococcus saprophyticus in Japan. Additionally, we evaluated the effectiveness of different therapeutic agents and compared the differences in their outcomes in treating S. saprophyticus-induced acute cystitis, considering that cephem antibiotics are standard treatments for acute cystitis in Japan. This retrospective study was conducted at ten hospitals housing urology departments, where urologists were dispatched from the Department of Nephro-Urology, Nagoya City University Graduate School of Medicine. Initially, we prepared a list of S. saprophyticus cases detected between January 2012 and December 2021, using the bacteriological testing system of each hospital. Subsequently, we reviewed the electronic medical records of the listed cases to investigate the causative diseases, treatments, and outcomes in patients with acute cystitis. The number of S. saprophyticus samples collected in this study was 289 from urine specimens, including 157 from women with acute cystitis. All antimicrobial agents demonstrated good therapeutic efficacy in all patients, except in those who did not return for follow-up visits (30 %). Furthermore, only one case of inadequate therapeutic efficacy was observed in a patient treated with a third-generation cephalosporin. All the other patients were cured. These findings revealed that the susceptibility of S. saprophyticus to different antimicrobials did not differ considerably between the specimens from patients with acute cystitis and those from other patients, suggesting a similar trend of therapeutic efficacies of the tested antimicrobials against S. saprophyticus-induced acute cystitis., (Copyright © 2024 Japanese Society of Chemotherapy, Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases, and Japanese Society for Infection Prevention and Control.
