Wave- and current-supported fluid mud on gently sloped continental shelves represents a type of sediment gravity flow capable of rapidly transporting substantial sediment over short periods, significantly contributing to coastal geomorphic evolution. To investigate the dynamics of intertidal fluid mud events, in-situ observations were conducted from May 9 to May 18, 2017, using a seabed tripod system at the lower intertidal flat of the central Jiangsu coast, China. Fluid mud was observed following a medium wind-wave event, with a maximum significant wave height of 0.42 m. The liquefied seabed, loosened by liquefaction, facilitated bed erosion and sediment resuspension. Fluid mud layers, with mean suspended sediment concentrations (SSCs) exceeding 10 g/L, periodically formed during high slack tide, early flood, and late ebb phases. These layers varied in thickness from 4 cm to 20 cm and exhibited strong stratification caused by suspended sediment. Fluid mud disappeared when the bottom turbulence kinetic energy exceeded a threshold of 0.00045 m2/s2 due to an increase in current velocity. The downslope movement of intertidal fluid mud was estimated using a theoretical buoyancy-friction model and validated by observed offshore-directed velocity jets at 0.1 m above the seabed during high slack tide phases. Additionally, onshore winds favored fluid mud formation during early flood phases, while offshore winds favored it during late ebb phases. These observations suggest that fluid mud can form on intertidal flats under conditions where tidal flows and winds align, contributing to a deeper understanding of the formation mechanisms of shallow gravity flows and the improvement of sediment transport models. At geologic timescales, a significant proportion of the sediment eroded from continents is transferred from rivers to littoral cells, then through submarine canyons to deep ocean basins. Accumulation and occasional discharge of sediment from canyon headwall regions is a likely driver for the sediment gravity flows believed to be responsible for much of this mass transport, but the responsible mechanisms and event timescales in canyon heads are imprecisely defined, largely due to the drowning of canyon heads since the last glaciation and the resulting dearth of modern depositional environments to observe. We investigated a littoral cell adjacent to Mattole submarine canyon in Northern California to better understand the influence of bathymetry and coast shape on sediment trajectories and hypothesize that canyon heads promote littoral sediment accumulation due to bathymetric sheltering of the adjacent coast from waves and convergence of littoral cells exposed to varying wave direction. The uppermost gullies of Mattole Canyon extend to the littoral cell, and a train of sediment waves within the uppermost thalweg of Mattole Canyon suggests that gravity-driven flows of shore-derived sediment may have recently occurred. Mattole Canyon and nearby Mendocino Canyon flow into the deep Mendocino Channel, which has the highest observed Late Holocene sediment accumulation rates in Northern California. We documented the beach slope, grain size, and sediment provenance along 15 km of coast adjacent to Mattole Canyon and conducted numerical wave modeling to infer the dominant direction and magnitude of sediment transport, relative wave sheltering by bathymetry, and estimated sediment mobility in the vicinity of the canyon head over a multi-year period. South of the canyon headwall, in the vicinity of the Mattole River outlet, coarser sediment rich in metasandstone clasts and steeper beach slopes coincide with decadal-scale beach accretion. North of the canyon head, sediments are generally finer, beaches are flatter, clast lithologies include more quartz and mudstone grains, and there is decadal-scale net erosion. Wave modeling suggests the Mattole headwall region is subject to sustained sheltering from waves due to canyon bathymetry, littoral sediment convergence above the canyon head for much of a typical year, and occasional bed entrainment of sediment in the canyon's uppermost gullies by large waves. Larger winter waves from the northwest likely result in net southerly drift north of the canyon head, with a high likelihood of preferentially transporting fine-grained, more quartz-rich sediment towards the Mattole headwall. Smaller summer swells from the west and south likely results in net northerly transport of metasandstone clast-rich Mattole River-derived sediment towards the canyon head. The imbalance in seasonality in wave conditions, coast shape, and sediment delivery by the Mattole River and other coastal creeks is broadly consistent with the spatial patterns in grain size, mineralogy, slope, and beach width that we observe in the vicinity of the canyon, and the net delivery of sediment to the Mattole Canyon head. An approximate mass balance of sediment flux from coastal streams feeding Mattole River littoral cell suggests that sediment volumes likely accumulate in the canyon headwall region that could supply several density flow events in a typical decade. These findings highlight the importance of the connectivity of the canyon to the nearshore region for the processes and products in canyons and fans. The World's one of largest inhabited river-made island Majuli, developed in response to depositional processes of large sediment load carried by the Bramhaputra River and Subhansari River from the Himalayan hinterland. But, for decades it has been going through a significant rate of erosion, which is severely threatening the existence of the island and its rich cultural heritage. These erosional processes result in exposure to island depositional records and provide an opportunity to study these sedimentary deposits. This paleo depositional record is very well analysed by adopting the methodology of facies identification and their relationship diagram. A total of 18 exposed outcrop sections are studied with detailed sedimentological documentation, facies identification and symbols assigned to facies. Then calculations and tabulations are carried out for Facies Relationship Diagram (FRD) along with the construction of the sequence model, which provides a lateral and vertical lithofacies association developed in the entire island sequentially. On the basis of validation of obtained data through field survey and analysis of more vertical profiles, we study the correlation between existing bank erosion and dominated sedimentary facies at Majuli Island. This analysis results in two facies sequences: one mud-dominated and the other sand-dominated facies. The Massive Mud and Massive Sand beds are represented as the main facies between these two sequences. Therefore, mud-dominated sequence represents the Flood Plain deposit, whereas the sand-dominated sequence represents Bar and Channel deposits. This study also reveals that sedimentary sequences developed by the Bramhaputra River are mud dominated, while that of the Subhansiri River is both mud and sand sequences. This reflects the differential source to sink transport of sediments, as the Bramhaputra River carries sediment load for a longer distance than the Subhanshiri River. This study also reveals that areas of sand-dominated facies show higher erosion than mud-dominated facies. Therefore, the sedimentary record of the Subhansiri River is more vulnerable to erosion. Rapid urbanization has an accelerated impact on catchment hydrology and geomorphology due to land use and land cover changes as a result of anthropogenic development activities in river catchment areas that cause increased surface runoff and higher sediment yield. The present study investigates the channel changes and sediment transport phenomena, including bed material movement from the upstream to the estuaries of the Pahang River Basin, Peninsula Malaysia. The river geometry survey associated with the spatial variation in sediment transport has confirmed that changes in river bed profile occur due to the erosion and sediment deposition along the Pahang River. The sediment size distribution for the Pahang River was very coarse sand and gravel after the December 2014 flood. The river geometry survey showed a gentle slope that can induce lower discharge typical of alluvial rivers relating to flood events. Offshore structures are deployed extensively to harvest marine resources. Due to the harsh marine environments and heavy-duty working conditions, the risks associated with failure due to scour are high, and the need for accurate prediction of these risks is increasing. Often, pipelines and cables are critical elements of subsea energy transportation and telecommunication, and they are highly susceptible to scour-induced failure. The scour around spheres is relevant to the offshore industry as a simplified three-dimensional representation of subsea structures. This paper presents a numerical study, using FLOW-3D HYDRO, of the scour around on-bottom cylinders and spheres. Whereas most published research investigated scour around stationary solid objects, this paper presents numerical results of a more challenging case of scour around sagging cylinders and spheres. The model was validated against published experimental and numerical results. The scour depth was found to increase with the decrease of the sagging velocity of the solid object. For sagging horizontal cylinders, the scour depth reaches a plateau of 1.1 times the cylinder diameter when the dimensionless sagging velocity is smaller than 0.094. For sagging spheres, the maximum scour depth reaches 0.37 times the sphere diameter when the dimensionless sagging velocity is reduced to 0.0103. The findings provide guidelines for future research on more complicated interactions between flow, solid objects, and the seabed, accounting for the deformation of infrastructure over time. Practical Applications: This paper concerns the flow, sediment transport, and scour around horizontal cylinders and spheres undergoing slow downward motion, which resembles the sagging of on-bottom infrastructure under the influence of gravity and bed erosion. Rainfall erosion can cause environmental and economic damage by decreasing the storage capacity of water reservoirs because of the detachment of soil particles. The purpose of this study was to develop a one-dimensional physicomathematical model that can help predict the effects of rainfall erosion on the banks of water reservoirs. The model was developed using the Mein–Larson model to describe water infiltration, the kinematic wave approximation to represent overland flow generation, and the steady state sediment continuity equation to estimate sediment transport. The model was validated using rainfall simulator tests and lateritic soil samples with a bimodal soil–water retention curve. The results showed conformity with the experimental data, identifying a threshold in the models for discharge per unit area and sediment yield rate, as well as a linear increase in the models for total runoff and sediment load per unit area. However, the model failed to capture the peak in sediment yield rate owing to raindrop impact during the initial minutes of rainfall. Parametric analysis highlighted the impact of increasing the calibration constant of splash erosion, erodibility coefficient, and critical shear stress on the slope of the sediment load per unit area model. Despite its limitations, the model demonstrates satisfactory predictive capability for sediment load per unit area under high-intensity rainfalls, achieving an R2 greater than 0.92 in five of the six cases examined. The sedimentary record of the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM, ca. 56 Ma) allows the study of feedback mechanisms over the entire duration of a climatic event, from carbon release to the subsequent recovery phase. Clay sedimentation increase in the oceans during the PETM is linked to enhanced terrestrial erosion. Fluvial channel mobility has been invoked to explain this increase in fine sediment export based on more frequent transitional avulsions. In this study, we test whether the reworking of Microcodium (prismatic calcite concretions) from the floodplain to marine environments can serve to fingerprint floodplain reworking due to channel mobility. We quantified the abundance of floodplain-sourced Microcodium grains reworked in fluvial to marine sandstones pre-dating and coeval to the PETM in the Southern Pyrenees (Tremp Basin, Spain). Laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry U-Pb ages on calcite confirm the Thanetian age of the Microcodium grains. Our data show a four-fold increase in the export of floodplain sediments to the marine domain during the PETM. Moreover, we show that this is predominantly due to enhanced channel mobility, reworking channel banks and interfluves, with increased erosion in the hinterland as a secondary factor. This increase in floodplain reworking would correspond to an increase in biospheric carbon burial flux by a factor of 2.2. Therefore, enhanced channel mobility and fine-grain sediment transport to the oceans during a climatic perturbation such as the PETM may constitute an important negative feedback mechanism. Active orogens balance tectonic rock uplift with erosion, commonly via river incision coupled to landslide denudation of “threshold” hillslopes, but sediment’s role in this feedback is unclear. We report fluvial geometry and sediment size, prevalence, and mobility across two ≤600-m-tall gneissic northern Alaska Range anticlines that sustain steep landslide-clad hillslopes but differ 10× in late Pleistocene–recent rock uplift rate. Enigmatically, the river steepens and narrows prominently across the fold experiencing slow surface uplift (∼0.5 mm/ yr) but remains low-gradient and wide downstream across the anticline undergoing rapid differential rock uplift (∼5 mm/yr). Frequent bedload mobilization across both folds implies fluvial equilibration to sediment transport despite discrepant channel forms and similarly prevalent hillslope-derived boulders. Boulder prevalence correlates significantly with channel slope and width on the slowly uplifting anticline, but weakly on the rapidly uplifting anticline. Strong correlations across the tectonically quiescent anticline may reflect local incision-suppressing boulder aggradation that forces the channel to steepen and narrow, consistent with field observations. Conversely, weak correlations across the rapidly uplifting anticline imply that boulders may modulate expected tectonic channel adjustment by preferentially aggrading to subdue slope, and deflecting frequently mobile bedload to drive lateral erosion that maintains channel width, steepens adjacent hillslopes, and perpetuates hillslope-channel coupling. Hence, hillslope-derived boulders may occupy important roles in regulating feedbacks between river incision and landslide erosion that differ fundamentally at high and low tectonic rates. Asymmetric tidal dynamics are of great significance for material transport and morphological evolution in estuaries. The tidal dynamics of the macro-tidal Hangzhou Bay (HZB) are characterized by flood-ebb asymmetries, spring-neap asymmetries, surface-bottom asymmetries, and up-downstream asymmetries. The mechanisms of spatio-temporal asymmetric tides and lateral flows in HZB were studied through a fully calibrated three-dimensional numerical model. The results show that tidal tides, tidal currents, and tidal asymmetry in HZB varied specially and temporally. In general, the bay was mostly flood-dominant. Temporally, tidal duration asymmetry in the bay fluctuated between spring and neap tides, with larger skewness during spring tides and smaller skewness during neap tides. The locally produced overtides are the primary sources of shallow-water tides in the bay, and the interaction between the lunar semi-diurnal tide M2 and the solar semi-diurnal tide S2 generates shallow-water overtides and deforms tidal asymmetries. The dissipated tidal energy may consumed by the bottom friction, with less passed to the generated shallow water overtides M4 and M6 tides (AM4 = 12.07 cm, AM6 = 3.91 cm) when comparing with the experiments that open boundary is purely forced by M2 tide (AM4 = 13.63 cm, AM6 = 6.31 cm). The increased depth reduces the bottom friction and the convergence of volume, resulting in skewness values close to zero (γTDA = 0.220, γM2-M4 = 0.141, γM2-M4-M6 = −0.002, γM2-S2-MS4 = 0.105). The changes of tidal duration asymmetry caused by the increased channel convergence, reduced bay width, and reclaimed intertidal zone spatially vary in different parts. The bottom friction contributed to the generation of the shallow-water tides and asymmetries in the bay (the RVRs for M4 and M6 are −73.5% and −92.5%), while the Coriolis force (the RVRs for M4 and M6 are 4.8% and 8.9%) and nonlinear advection (the RVRs for M4 and M6 are −17.3% and − 21.8%) are minor factors. Sedimentary landforms on Earth and other planetary bodies are built through scour, transport, and deposition of sediment. Sediment connectivity refers to the hypothesis that pathways of sediment transport do not occur in isolation, but rather are mechanistically linked. In dryland river systems, one such example of sediment connectivity is the transport of fluvially deposited sediment by wind. However, predictive tools that can forecast fluvial‐aeolian sediment connectivity at meaningful scales are rare. Here we develop a suite of models for quantifying the availability of river‐sourced sediment for aeolian transport as a function of river flow, wind regime, and land cover across 168 km of the Colorado River in Grand Canyon, USA. We compare and validate these models using topographic changes observed over 10 years in a coupled river sandbar‐aeolian dunefield setting. The models provide a path forward for directly linking fluvial hydrology with the management and understanding of aeolian landscapes. Plain Language Summary: Landscapes on Earth are built from sediment, which is deposited by a variety of processes, especially water and wind. In rivers located in dry regions, sediment is deposited by flowing water during river floods. Once this sediment dries, it is often then moved by wind across the landscape. Although we frequently observe this sediment connectivity between water and wind, we are not currently able to predict when and where windblown transport of river‐deposited sediment may occur. We used maps of sand in Grand Canyon along 168 km of the Colorado River, along with records of river flow, wind speed, and vegetation cover, to develop four models that predict how much sediment is available for wind to move. We compared the results of these models to actual windblown sediment transport at a study site in Grand Canyon, finding that when models predicted more sand was available at the site, we also observed more landscape changes there which were due to wind. Our research makes it possible to understand how changes in river flows affect the amount of sediment moved by wind. Since the 1990s, analysis of cosmogenic nuclides, primarily 10Be, in quartz-bearing river sand, has allowed for quantitative determination of erosion rates at a basin scale. Paired measurements of in situ cosmogenic 26Al and 10Be in sediment are less common but offers insight into the history of riverine sediment moving down slopes and through drainage basins. Prolonged sediment burial (>105 years), a violation of assumptions underlying erosion rate calculations, is indicated by higher 26Al-based than 10Be-based erosion rates due to preferential loss of shorter-lived 26Al by decay when quartz is shielded from cosmic rays. Here, we use a global compilation of 26Al and 10Be data generated from quartz-bearing fluvial sediment samples (n = 624, including 121 new measurements) and calculate the discordance between erosion rates derived from each nuclide. We test for correlations between such discordance and topographic metrics for drainage basins, allowing us to infer the likelihood of sediment burial during transport in different geomorphic settings. We find that nearly half of samples (n = 276) exhibit discordance (> 1σ uncertainty) between erosion rates derived from 10Be and 26Al, indicating sediment histories that must include extended burial during residence on hillslopes and/or in the fluvial system after or during initial near-surface exposure. Physical basin parameters such as basin area, slope, and tectonic activity exhibit significant correlation with erosion rate discordance whereas climatic parameters have little correlation. Our analysis suggests that 26Al/10Be erosion rate discordance occurs more regularly in basins larger than 1,000 km2, particularly when such basins have low average slopes and are in tectonically quiescent terrains. Sediment sourced from smaller, steeper basins in tectonically active regions is more likely to have similar 10Be and 26Al erosion rates indicative of limited storage and limited burial during residence in the hillslope and fluvial sediment system. The data and analysis we present demonstrate that paired 26Al and 10Be analyses in detrital fluvial samples can provide a window into watershed processes, elucidating landscape behavior at different spatial scales and allowing a deeper understanding of both sediment routing systems and whether erosion rate assumptions are violated. Large lowland basins are more likely to transport detrital sediment that has experienced prolonged sediment storage and burial either on hillslopes and/or in fluvial networks; thus, erosion rates from such basins are lower limits due to nuclide decay during storage. The Changjiang Estuary and Hangzhou Bay system has experienced river damming and estuarine engineering in the last decades. However, few studies focused on the shifts in its sediment dynamics due to such human activities. In this study multi-decadal development of sediment dynamics in the transitional zone of the two large estuaries was analyzed, based on the synchronous hydrographic data in the winter of 2023, 2014 and 1983. The results revealed significant changes in regional hydrodynamics and suspended sediment transport, despite the continuous good correlations between the current velocity, suspended sediment concentration (SSC), water/sediment fluxes and tidal range. Specifically, the current velocity has been decreased by 8 - 21% after 2014, mainly due to the land reclamation (implemented around 2016) with several groins stretching into deep water and altering alongshore hydrodynamics. The SSC has decreased further by 29 - 38% in addition to the significant decrease during 1983 - 2014. The SSC changes are related to the combination of river damming which induced sediment load reduction and land reclamation which enclosed a large amount of sediment. Furthermore, the sediment transport from Changjiang Estuary to Hangzhou Bay decreased by 36% - 53%, explaining the observed bed erosion in the northern bay mouth in recent years. The Bohai Sea, known for being the lowest latitude seasonally frozen sea area in the world, experienced severe ice conditions with a 30-year recurrence period during the winter of 2009-2010. Water-sediment flux is a crucial parameter for water quality management in marine environment. Using a highly accurate three-dimensional hydrodynamic and sediment transport numerical model, the significant wave height (Hs), current velocity, suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and water-sediment flux in the Bohai Sea during ice-covered and ice-free conditions are compared. Our findings indicate that the current velocity and sediment resuspension decrease under the ice coverage, but increase at the edge of the ice. The net outflow tidal flux (TF) in winter under ice-free conditions accounts for 24.5% of the whole year. The net outflow TF increases by 32.7% during ice-covered conditions, primarily due to the pressure difference between high air pressure superimposing heavy sea ice in the northwest Bohai Sea and the low air pressure in Bohai Strait, resulting in increased ebb velocity and decreased flood velocity. The net outflow suspended sediment flux (SSF) during ice-free conditions in the winter is 2.32×109 kg, while SSF increases by 1.24 times during ice-covered conditions, leading to worse water quality in the outer sea. The decrease of TF in the southern part of the Bohai Strait and the reduction of suspended sediment concentration by nearly 15 mg/l lead to the significant decrease in SSF. We employ the methods of statistical mechanics to obtain closures for the balance equations of momentum and fluctuation kinetic energy that govern the ballistic motion of grains rebounding at a rigid, bumpy bed that are driven by turbulent or non-turbulent shearing fluids, in the absence of mid-trajectory collisions and fluid velocity fluctuations. We obtain semi-analytical solutions for steady and fully developed saltation over horizontal beds for the vertical profiles of particle concentration and stresses and fluid and particle velocities. These compare favourably with measurements in discrete-element numerical simulations in the wide range of conditions of Earth and other planetary environments. The predictions of the particle horizontal mass flux and its scaling with the amount of particles in the system, the properties of the carrier fluid and the intensity of the shearing also agree with numerical simulations and wind-tunnel experiments. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is suffering from a substantial decline in terrestrial water storage (TWS) in exorheic basins, threatening water resources that are critical for ∼2 billion people downstream. TWS changes are commonly estimated using gravity satellites through observations of the total terrestrial mass storage (TMS) change, with an implicit assumption of a negligible contribution from sediment transport. Through long‐term (2002–2017) sediment flux observations in seven headwater basins on the TP, we reveal that the gravity satellite‐derived TMS has decreased at a rate of 3.85 ± 0.23 Gt yr−1 in the seven basins, of which 0.35 ± 0.04 Gt yr−1 is contributed by sediment transport. Neglecting this contribution leads to an overestimation of the TWS loss by 10.1 ± 1.3%, equivalent to the annual water demand of an additional 0.62 million people in the surrounding nations. Regionally, the overestimation is surprisingly high in the Indus River and Yarkant River basins, reaching up to 50.8%–77.6%. Plain Language Summary: Accurate quantification of the change in the terrestrial water storage (TWS) on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is imperative to improve the assessment of water availability that are critical for ∼2 billion people downstream. Green sea dykes, also known as ecosystem-based sea dykes, represent a novel type of coastal defense consisting of both traditional structural engineering and coastal ecosystems, designed to cope with the future trends of sea level rise and intensified storms. Here we focus on the mid-latitude mud coasts (eastern China in particular), which face the most prominent risks of storm surge, storm-induced giant waves, and shoreline erosion, and summarizes the scientific basis of green sea dykes and the current status of engineering practices. We show that the basic mechanisms of nearshore wave energy dissipation include bottom friction, sediment transport, and form drag. These explain the wave damping capacity of oyster reefs and salt marshes on mud coasts. In tidal flat environments, oyster growth increases frictional resistance and even causes wave breaking; the resuspension and transport of fine-grained sediments on salt marsh beds and the movement or resistance to hydrodynamic forcing of salt marsh vegetation stems effectively dissipate wave kinetic energy, and their efficiency increases with the elevation of the bed surface. Based on the wave damping capacity of oyster reefs and salt marshes on mud coasts, ecosystem-based sea dykes are being built in combination with traditional structured sea dykes. By utilizing natural tidal flats outside the dykes or implementing artificial modification projects, a certain scale of salt marshes and/or oyster reefs can be maintained, which serve to protect the sea dykes and enhance their wave resistance functions. From the perspective of system optimization, it is necessary to further improve the efficiency and sustainability of green sea dykes under constraints such as regional environment characteristics, ecosystem health, investment capacity, and ecological resilience. Related scientific issues include the theorization of the wave damping process of salt marshes, the niche and scale control of oyster reef and salt marsh ecosystems, the establishment of engineering standards and the design of the optimal form of sea dykes. Based on field hydro-meteorological observations and sediment sampling data, this study analyzes sediment transport under normal conditions in the Fanshi offshore wind farm project area in Yangjiang, China. It was found that sediment transport in the engineering sea area is relatively stable, and seabed sediments are not easily mobilized. By building a tidal current–sediment mathematical model, the impact of wind farm construction on the erosion and deposition environment in the surrounding sea areas was studied. It was found that areas with significant accumulation are mainly located near the pile foundations of wind turbines. Furthermore, considering ocean dynamics, geological conditions, and wave–current interactions, different local erosion empirical formulas were used to calculate local erosion depth and range. The results show that Han Haiqian's formula and the HEC-18 formula, which consider wave velocity, are very close and more suitable for the actual conditions of this project. As turbine pile diameters increase, local scour depths and ranges also increase. This study preliminarily analyzes the basic scour characteristics of deep-sea wind turbines off the western coast of Guangdong Province, offering important design parameters for the construction of this project, and also providing a systematic and scientific method for studying local scour at turbine pile foundations. The flow structure around limited-size vegetation patches is crucial for understanding sediment transport and vegetation succession trends. While the influence of vegetation density has been extensively explored, the impact of the relative diameter of vegetation stems remains relatively unclear. After validating the reliability of the numerical model with experimental data, this study conducted 2D-URANS simulations (SST k-ω) to investigate the impact of varying relative diameters d/D under different vegetation densities λ on the hydrodynamic characteristics and drag force of vegetation patches. The results show that increasing d/D and decreasing λ are equivalent, both contributing to increased spacing between cylinder elements, allowing for the formation of element-scale Kármán vortices. Compared to vegetation density λ, the non-dimensional frontal area aD is a better predictor for the presence of array-scale Kármán vortex streets. Within the parameter range covered in this study, array-scale Kármán vortex streets appear when aD ≥ 1.4, which will significantly alter sediment transport patterns. For the same vegetation density, increasing the relative diameter d/D leads to a decrease in the array drag coefficient C ¯ D and an increase in the average element drag coefficient C ¯ d . When parameterizing vegetation resistance using aD, all data points collapse onto a single curve, following the relationships C ¯ D = 0.34 ln a D + 0.78 and C ¯ d = − 0.42 ln a D + 0.82 . Weird horizontal shapes of branches, in large branching estuaries, often cause significant flood risks and environment-related problems. People usually resort to engineering methods to improve the horizontal shape of the weird branches and solve related issues. The responses of the riverbed evolution of a branching estuary to anthropogenic activity are complicated because of complex estuarine hydrodynamics and sediment transports, especially when the project locates specially (e.g., at estuary outlets). The North Branch of the Yangtze Estuary has a narrow upper reach which is almost orthogonal to the South Branch and has a trumpet-shaped lower reach with a wide outlet. The weird horizontal shape of the North Branch brings significant flood risks to cities along this branch, the shrinkage of its entrance, and other problems. In this study, a regulation of the North Branch, which is launched at Guyuan Sand (GYS) just outside the exit of the North Branch, is taken as an example. The GYS regulation aims to improve the weird horizontal shape of the North Branch by building new layouts of outlets, by which people decrease the flood risk of the surrounding cities. The GYS regulation is studied using a 2D numerical model. The riverbed evolution of the Yangtze Estuary in a typical hydrological year is simulated, while the water/sediment fluxes at cross-sections of branches in the estuary during a spring/neap tide are quantitatively calculated. It is found that the regulation changes the rotational flows near the shore, and further reshapes the estuarine circulations of mass inside the outlets, especially exchanges of water/sediment between different branches. The regulation directly changes the riverbed evolution at the outlet of the North Branch, and meanwhile has significant indirect influences on the riverbed evolution of the entrance of the North Branch. The varying riverbed evolution at the entrance of the North Branch and the varying water/sediment fluxes, under different designs of regulations, are related and analyzed. An essential improvement for the weird horizontal shape of the North Branch by an engineering method is shown to be possible, while the regulation mechanism of the engineering method and the response of estuarine riverbed evolution to the regulation are clarified. This study provides a new insight for improving estuarine branches with weird horizontal shapes, by reshaping the tidal processes and the accompanying sediment transports in a branching estuary. Understanding settling motion of coral grains is important in terms of protection of coral reef systems and resotoration of the associated ecosystems. In this paper, a series of laboratory experiments was conducted to investigate the settling motion, using optical microscopy to measure shape parameters of coral grains and the particle-filtering-based object tracking to reconstruct the three-dimensional trajectory. Three characteristic descent regimes, namely, tumbling, chaotic and fluttering, are classified based on the three-dimensional trajectory, the spiral radius variation and the velocity spectrum. It is demonstrated that if one randomly picks up one coral grain, then the probabilities of occurrence of the three regimes are approximately $26\,\%$ , $42\,\%$ and $32\,\%$ , respectively. We have shown that first, the dimensionless settling velocity generally increases with the non-dimensional diameter and Corey shape factor and second, the drag coefficient generally decreases with the Reynolds number and Corey shape factor. Based on this, the applicability of existing models on predicting settling velocity and drag coefficient for coral grains is demonstrated further. Finally, we have proposed extended models for predicting the settling velocity. Background: The microplastic transport of rivers is a complex spatiotemporal process; however, only limited knowledge exists on it, making its monitoring complicated. The study aimed to analyze the spatial and temporal dynamics of suspended sediments and microplastics based on measurements (1) every five days for 2 years at one site and (2) annual repetition at 29 sites along the 750-km-long Tisza River for 3 years. Water samples were taken by pumping (1 m3). Machine learning algorithms were applied to Sentinel images to analyze the spatiality of sediment transport. Results: In the Tisza River (Central Europe), the microplastic concentration (MPCmean: 35 ± 27 item/m3) and the suspended sediment concentration (SSCmean: 60 ± 57 g/m3) showed high temporal variations. During low stages, the concentrations dropped as most transported sediments were deposited on the bottom. These sediments, including microplastics, were remobilized during flood waves, thus, higher MPC and SSC were measured. The first flood wave after a low-stage period had the highest concentrations. The increased transport capacity of the river during floods created large-scale suspended sediment and microplastic waves with increased concentrations. The mean MPC gradually increased between 2021 (19 ± 13.6 item/m3) and 2022 (23.7 ± 15.8 item/m3), and then it more than doubled (2023: 57 ± 44.8 item/m3). The tributaries acted as suspended sediment and microplastic conveyors. On the Sentinel images, medium-scale clouds were identified, with the suspended sediment clouds being more pronounced than microplastic clouds. Fewer and longer clouds appeared during low stages, separated by clearer water bodies. During flood waves, shorter clouds were detected. The tributaries with increased suspended sediment and microplastic transport created well-distinguishable clouds in the main river. Conclusions: Identifying suspended sediment and microplastic clouds in a river could support more precise monitoring. The hydrological background of the monitoring and the existence of these clouds should be considered, as sampling from clouds with increased SSC and MPC provides different data than sampling from the clearer water bodies between two clouds. This article presents a study on the wind-sand dynamics of blowouts in the Xilingol sandy grassland in Inner Mongolia, China. The study investigates the changes in airflow and sediment transport within the blowouts. The results show that the wind direction inside the blowout is influenced by the direction of the incoming wind, and the rate of wind speed acceleration and sand transport is primarily influenced by wind direction and wind speed. Mining activities can lead to an exacerbated enrichment of metal concentrations. Pollution by metal(loid)s in arid regions has been little elucidated. This study assessed the transport and mobilization of trace elements in an arid environment under two ephemeral wash systems originating from processed tailing materials in the Valley Wells Smelter, California (USA). Overall, enrichment factors evidence a significant increase in trace elements in the South Wash compared to the North Wash. The Principal Component Analysis demonstrates in the South Wash that Cd-Cu is associated with As-Pb-Zn and Ba-Co-Mn primarily. All areas (from South and North wash) indicated extremely high enrichment of Cu due to mining activities. Data showed that in the northern wash area the metals As, Cu and Sr presented concentrations much higher than the background. The geochemical survey indicates deleterious effects on the environmental quality of the investigated areas, requiring reparative and conservative measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil erosion poses a significant problem in the Mediterranean region, posing serious threats to the environment and natural resources. The objective of this study is to identify and evaluate the risks associated with gully erosion in the Medjerda watershed in the northeastern part of Algeria. To accomplish this goal, two models were utilized: the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (F-AHP) and the frequency ratio (FR). Twelve factors that contribute to soil erosion were considered in the study: slope, elevation, distance to streams, land use and land cover, drainage density (DD), topographic wetness index (TWI), rainfall, soil groups, lineament density, soil power index (SPI), sediment transport index (STI), and plan curvature. The results indicate that sediment transport index (STI), rainfall, and slope are the most influential factors in predicting erosion in the Medjerda Basin. To validate the models used, the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) was employed. The AUC values obtained for the FR and F-AHP models were 75.5 and 73.7%, respectively, indicating their excellent accuracy in identifying the erosion susceptibility area. The accuracy ratings of both models demonstrate their outstanding predictive capabilities. Thus, the results of soil erosion susceptibility maps with a better success rate and forecast could be beneficial and effective for implementing various policy measures to safeguard soil. The phenomenon of rhythmic patterns of the coastal-zone morphology (beach cusps, longshore sand waves, spits, and nearshore bars) is considered the result of self-organization of the relief when a positive feedback is established between sediment transport and morphology. It is shown that the dynamics of the contour and profile of the coast can be described in terms of the diffusion equation, which allows for both attenuation and growth of relief perturbations. The conditions are determined under which the self-organization mechanism is activated and the resulting perturbations grow over time. Rhythmic structures of the coastal contour are traditionally associated with waves propagating at a large angle relative to the coastal normal. However, it has been shown that the self-organization of beach cusps and megacusps also occurs in normal coast waves due to the development of circulation cells in the surf zone. The conclusion is substantiated that the formation of nearshore bars under certain conditions is also determined by the self-organization mechanism. The in situ measurement of sediment transport in wave‐dominated environments presents significant challenges and currently often relies upon the use of fluorescent sediment tracers. However, this method is constrained by challenges in conducting unbiased and representative sampling, as well as facing overall logistical complexities and labour‐intensive procedures. Whilst other tracer techniques are available, such as using magnetic tracers, their performance in tracking sediment transport has not been quantified. The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of magnetic tracers in evaluating net transport rates and tracer dispersal patterns. Conducted in a controlled large wave flume, the experiments simultaneously employed fluorescent and magnetic tracers, allowing a comprehensive comparison of the tracers' dispersion patterns and the net transport rates. Results show that the dispersal of magnetic and fluorescent tracers displays a high degree of spatial coherence in both horizontal and vertical dimensions. Similarly, net transport rates are comparable (<16% difference), both showing net transport in the direction of the wave propagation (towards onshore) driven by non‐linear and streaming effects. Magnetic tracer recovery rate (49%) was lower than for fluorescent tracers (73%) and is attributed to the loss of magnetic ink from particles; an aspect of the magnetic technique that requires improvement. This study therefore indicates that the use of magnetic tracers to quantify sediment transport is an effective method with the advantages of being significantly less labour‐intensive than using the commonly applied fluorescent sediment tracer method. Large rivers are characterized by large water discharges, high suspended sediment fluxes and low slope, and typically display multiple channels that are separated by large complex bars. The most common channel style found in these rivers is characterized by the alternating presence of single and multiple channel threads. Mid‐channel compound bars separate a main deeper channel from shallower secondary channels, leading to low‐order braiding and low to moderate sinuosity. Despite the importance of this type of river for global terrestrial sediment transport and the interpretation of ancient fluvial successions, integrated depositional models for large multi‐channel rivers are still not fully developed. This paper interprets the channel morphodynamics and depositional architecture of such large rivers by investigating the distinctive features of their laterally‐accreting mid‐channel bars in the Solimões–Amazonas River. This is achieved by examination of temporal series of satellite images, quantification of bedforms using multibeam echosounding surveys, analysis of shallow seismic and ground penetrating radar surveys of selected areas, and on‐site field observations and sample collections. Such mid‐channel bars produce directional variability in planform scroll bar accretion of up to 180°. As these bars – and their associated channels – evolve, they become progressively shallower, due to the bifurcation of the two channels and the resultant partitioning of discharge that leads to a gradual reduction in transport capacity within the outer channel. The preserved successions of this process in the alluvial plain are characterized by fining‐upward trends, with larger cross‐strata sets at mid‐depths and internal erosional surfaces marking distinct cycles of bar development with potentially differing palaeocurrent trends. The new depositional models proposed for these mid‐channel bars and channels constitute a basis for the recognition of large multi‐channel river deposits in the ancient rock record. Numerical forward modelling and laboratory experiments suggest that autogenic factors in the sediment routing system serve as long‐pass filters, preserving only orbital cycles with a period exceeding the compensation timescale, Tc, or thickness in the depth domain exceeding the compensation depth scale, Hc. For a specific orbital cycle with a certain period, this preservation in alluvial strata occurs unless it exhibits a sufficiently large amplitude. This study stratigraphically confirms, for the first time, the long‐pass filtering of autogenic dynamics using elemental data from the alluvial–lacustrine Sifangtai and Mingshui formations in the Songliao Basin. Spectral analysis of the Si and Zr series in coarse‐grained sediments reveals no cyclic signal with thicknesses below the estimated lower limits of Hc. This implies that the spatial storage threshold for orbital cycles in proxies of the coarse‐grained sediment component is equal to or less than Hc. However, cyclic signals of obliquity and precession with smaller thicknesses are identified in Ti, Fe and Al enriched in the fine‐grained sediment components of the stratigraphy. Notably, previously reported proxies preserving high‐frequency orbital cycles are derived from fine‐grained sediment components, differing from the sedimentation rate series used in the reported experimental studies. Therefore, the authors hypothesize a grain‐size component‐dependent storage threshold, suggesting that the storage threshold of orbital cycles in proxies associated with fine‐grained components is lower. This hypothesis arises from the weaker effect of autogenic dynamics on the content of fine‐grained sediment components transported to the sampling site by a suspended load compared to coarser components that are subjected to stronger autogenic dynamics within or near channels. The hypothesis and model presented propose a dynamic process elucidating the nuanced roles of autogenic dynamics in preserving orbital cycles. Nearshore incised valleys are important conduits for the transport of sediment, nutrients, pollutants and organic carbon from the continents to the sea. Therefore, it is essential to understand the autogenic evolution of deltas confined within incised valleys and how such evolution is affected by relative sea‐level rise. To date, limited research has focused on how deltas constrained by incised valleys or other forms of antecedent topography respond to rising sea level. An existing theory of autostratigraphy envisages scenarios in which two‐dimensional or unconfined three‐dimensional fan deltas can experience three evolutionary stages under constant rates of relative sea‐level rise and sediment supply: progradation, autoretreat and post‐autobreak transgression. In this work, an integrated study of geometric numerical models and physical experiments is undertaken to investigate autostratigraphic delta evolution for a variety of incised‐valley geometries, under conditions of constant rates of relative sea‐level rise and sediment supply. Results indicate that interplays of antecedent topography (valley geometries) and sediment mass balance expressed in resultant deltaic geometries can result in autogenic changes in shoreline dynamics and river avulsion frequency on deltas. The following primary findings arise. (i) Compared to valleys with rectangular and trapezoidal cross‐sectional profiles, valleys with triangular cross‐sections tend to contain deltas that experience faster rates of progradation, autoretreat and post‐autobreak transgression under rising sea level, and exhibit a more prominent convex‐seaward shoreline trajectory. (ii) The shoreline trajectory is also related to delta topset geometry, becoming more convex‐seaward under decreasing topset slopes. (iii) River avulsion frequency on deltas with rising sea level varies markedly across valleys with different geometries, even under the same rate of relative sea‐level rise; this is attributed to the difference in temporal evolution of shoreline migration for different valley geometries and the resultant difference in the delta topset aggradation. This study highlights complexities in responses of sedimentary systems under the confinement of different topographic configurations that have hitherto largely been overlooked in sequence‐stratigraphic models. The aim of this study was to provide a broader view of the transport and mobilization of metal(loid)s in sediments from the Yellow Pine Mill site in Goodsprings, Nevada. This mine was principally a lead ore operation located in the township of Goodspring, Nevada. From the two wash systems originating from processed tailing piles of the mill the contaminant migration was evaluated. Concentrations of metal(loid)s in sediments were up to 10 times higher in the south wash than in the north. Maximum levels of As and Pb in surficial south wash sediments were 103 and 1351 mg kg−1, respectively. Similarly, the enrichment factors of Cd, Cu, and Pb were far lower in north wash tailing than those obtained for south wash. Principal component analysis (PCA) data from the south wash shows PC2 explained 13.98% of the total variance and loadings on Zn (0.982), Cu (0.875), Pb (0.778), and Cd (0.690), which can be considered anthropogenic component associated with mine tailing. Evaluation of the transport mechanism of sediments indicates that metal(loid)s in sediments were found to have been derived from anthropogenic activities and migrated at least 1050 m beyond source materials in the south wash. [Objective] The aims of this study are to explore the scale effect in the process of runoff and sediment movement on the slope, to clarify the scale effect influence mechanism of runoff and sediment movement in the hilly and gully region of the Loess Plateau, so as to provide scientific support for the study of runoff and sediment transfer mechanism and the comprehensive management of runoff and sediment in the Yellow River Basin. [Methods] Based on the runoff and sediment data of four runoff fields in Zizhou runoff test station of the Yellow River, the scale transfer effect of runoff and sediment yield on slope was revealed by comparing and analyzing the runoff and sediment yield processes of different slope lengths under rainfall events. The concept of scale transfer efficiency was proposed to characterize the runoff and sediment transfer relationship between the upper and lower levels, and to further explore the influencing factors on runoff and sediment transfer efficiency. [Results] (1) The characteristics of different rainfall types had different effects on the runoff and sediment yield on the slope. The rainfall duration mainly affected the runoff and sediment yield on the slope, and the average rainfall intensity mainly affected the starting time of runoff and sediment yield on the slope. (2) Under the event of rainfall, the runoff transfer of different slope lengths was an ideal equilibrium transfer mechanism, and with the increase of slope length, the transfer capacity of runoff showed a decreasing trend. Under the condition of 40~60m slope length, the transfer of sediment was a non- equilibrium transfer process. With the increase of slope length, the transfer capacity of sediment increased first and then decreased. (3) The influencing factors on flow-sediment transfer efficiency on different scale slopes were different. Runoff depth, average rainfall intensity and surface soil moisture content after rain were the main factors affecting the transfer efficiency of flow-sediment scale. [Conclusion] The runoff and sediment yield capacity of the slope in the loess hilly and gully region is affected by rainfall characteristics and slope length. There is a significant scale effect of damage or gain in the transmission of runoff and sediment along the way. [Objective] The aims of this study are to investigate the spatial and temporal changes of runoff and sediment load in the Kuye River Basin, to quantify the contribution of climate change and human activities to variation of runoff and sediment load, and to provide scientific basis for the rational use of water resources and the optimal allocation of soil and water conservation measures in the Kuye River Basin. [Methods] Based on the runoff, sediment load and rainfall data of Xinmiao, Wangdaohengta, Shenmu and Wenjiachuan hydrological stations in Kuye River Basin from 1960 to 2020, the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of runoff and sediment load were analyzed by the linear trend method, Mann-Kendall trend test and Pettitt mutation test, and the double mass curve was used to quantitatively analyze the contribution rate of climate change and human activities to runoff and sediment load variation in different periods. [Results] Annual runoff and sediment load in the Kuye River Basin showed a significant decreasing trend from 1960 to 2020 (p<0.01). The runoff reduction rates of Xinmiao, Wangdaohengta, Shenmu and Wenjiachuan hydrological stations were 2.4 million m³/a, 3.4 million m³/a, 8.1 million m³/a, 10.6 million m³/a, the reduction rates of sediment load were 0.438 million t/a, 0.693 million t/a, 1.603 million t/a and 2.721 million t/a, respectively. The annual runoff and sediment load of each hydrological station changed abruptly both in 1979 and 1996, so the runoff and sediment load sequences could be divided into the reference period (1960-1979, P1) and the change period (1980-1996, P2;1997-2020, P3). During the study period, the average annual runoff depth and sediment load modulus of different sub-basins showed a decreasing trend, but there were differences in space. [Conclusion] The increasing human activities (water conservancy and soil conservation measures, coal mining, etc.) are the dominant factors on variation of runoff and sediment load in the Kuye River Basin. Compared with the base period, the runoff and sediment load of each hydrological station decreased in both P2 and P3 periods, and reduction was more intense in P3 period. Floods are becoming more widely acknowledged as a common occurrence of nature's dangers on a global scale. Although forecasting models primarily focus on timely warnings, models aimed at evaluating dangerous zones can play a vital role in shaping policies for adaptation, mitigation, and reducing the risk of disasters. Using machine learning techniques including hybrid black widow optimization (BWO) with XGBoost, LGBoost, and AdaBoost. We generate a flood susceptibility map for considered region of lower mahanadi basin (LMB). This study examines the effectiveness of these machine learning models in assessing and mapping flood susceptibility, while also providing suggestions for future research in this area. Flood susceptibility model was developed using 13 variables: Altitude, Aspect, Curvature, Distance from river, Drainage Density, Stream Power Index (SPI), Sediment Transport Index (STI), Rainfall intensity, Land Use Land Cover (LULC), Topographic Wetness Index (TWI), Terrain Roughness Index (TRI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and slope. Additionally, flood inventory data were incorporated into the model. Dataset was divided into a 70% portion for training model and a 30% portion for validating model. To assess the performance of the model, several evaluation metrics were employed, including receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and other performance indices. Evaluation of flood susceptibility mapping, using ROC curve method in combination with flood density yielded strong and reliable results for various models. BWO‐XGBoost achieved a score of 0.889, BWO‐LGBoost achieved a score of 0.937, and BWO‐ADABoost achieved a score of 0.904. These scores indicate effectiveness of these models in accurately predicting flood susceptibility in the study area. A comparison was made with commonly used methods in flood susceptibility assessment to evaluate the efficiency of proposed models. It was found that having a first‐class and enlightening database is crucial for accurately classifying flood types in flood susceptibility mapping. This aspect greatly contributes to improving the overall performance of the model. Among the evaluated methods, the hybrid model BWO‐LGBoost demonstrated better performance compared with others, indicating its effectiveness in accurately predicting flood susceptibility. High‐elevation, low‐relief continental plateaus are major topographic features and profoundly influence atmospheric circulation, sediment transport and storage, and biodiversity. Although orogenic surface‐uplift mechanisms for modern continental plateaus near known plate margins like Tibet are well‐characterized, they cannot account for examples in intracontinental settings like the Colorado Plateau. In contrast to canonical plate‐tectonic uplift mechanisms, broad‐scale hydration‐induced metasomatism of the lower crust has been suggested to reduce its density and increase its buoyancy sufficiently to contribute to isostatic uplift. However, the relationships between key petrophysical properties in these environments are not fully quantified, which limits application of this model. Here, we develop a series of petrological models that describe the petrological and topographic effects of fluid–rock interaction in non‐deforming continental crust of varying composition. We apply an open‐system petrological modelling framework that utilizes reactive‐transport calculations to determine the spatial and temporal scales over which mineralogic transformations take place compared with the magnitude of infiltration of aqueous fluids derived from devolatilization of subducting oceanic lithosphere. The buoyancy effect of hydration‐induced de‐densification is most significant for metabasic lower crust, intermediate for metapelitic crust, and minimal for granodioritic crust. We apply these results to a case study of the ~2 km‐high Colorado Plateau and demonstrate that under ideal conditions, hydration of its lower–middle crust by infiltrating aqueous fluids released by the Farallon slab during Cenozoic low‐angle subduction could have uplifted the plateau surface by a maximum of ~1 km over 16 Myr. However, realistically, although hydration likely has a measurable effect on surface tectonics, the uplift of orogenic plateaus is likely dominantly controlled by other factors, such as lithospheric delamination. Algeria, a semi-arid Mediterranean country, is distinguished by a more marked interannual variability in solid inputs compared to liquid inputs. This study aimed to comprehensively analyze hydrometeorological variables, such as rainfall, suspended sediment load, and flood flows in the Wadi Mina basin (6048 km2), using both traditional and advanced statistical techniques. These techniques included the MK trend tests MMK, and TFPWMK, as well as newer methods such as ITA and IPTA. To identify breakpoints, the CUSUM test and the SQ-MK test were used. The study was based on monthly data covering 40 years of rainfall (1970–2010) and 41 years of data on flood flows and suspended sediment load (1969–2010). The results indicated stable annual rainfall across the stations, suggesting a consistent rainfall regime over time. However, notable variability in sediment loads and flood flows was observed, with stations like Ain Hamara, Sidi Aek Djilali, and Wadi El Abtal displaying marked decreases in annual sediment loads, hinting at effective erosion control or natural attenuation of erosive processes. In contrast, a significant increase in flood events was recorded at Ain Hamara, attributed to climatic fluctuations or land use changes affecting runoff. Monthly analyses further demonstrated the enhanced sensitivity of ITA and IPTA over traditional methods, effectively uncovering subtle trends not detected by MK, MMK, and TFPWMK. For example, increasing rainfall trends during winter at Takhmert station and significant sediment transport patterns at Ain Hamara during colder months suggested dynamic seasonal hydrological behaviors. Additionally, critical insights into abrupt changes were revealed through CUSUM and SQ-MK tests, such as a pivotal shift in flood regimes at Takhmert in 2003 and a critical change in rainfall patterns at Ain Hamara in 2008, necessitating adjustments in water management and agricultural practices. Wave-induced sheet flow leads to intense sediment transport. Fine sand and medium/coarse sand exhibit opposite directions of net sediment transport under velocity-skewed oscillatory sheet flows. A newly developed two-phase mixture model is employed to simulate the sediment transport under these conditions. The model accounts for particle stress, two-phase momentum exchange, and turbulence modulation. The effects of grain size on flow characteristics and sediment transport are primarily investigated. The model effectively reproduces the spatial and temporal distributions of two-phase velocities and sediment concentration as well as the periodic distribution of erosion depth. Comparisons between configurations with medium and fine sand demonstrate that the grain size impacts sediment transport in two main ways. First, the grain size influences the periodic variations in erosion depth and the quantity of suspended sediment. A decrease in the grain size increases the phase residual and phase lag, enhancing offshore sediment transport. Second, suspended sediments modulate the flow dynamics within the oscillatory boundary layer. As cross‐shelf gradients of most properties are typically much steeper than those in the alongshore direction, transport across isobaths tends to be inhibited, particularly at oceanic fronts where cross‐shelf gradients are markedly pronounced. Consequently, variations in cross‐shelf gradients may exert a significant influence on offshore transport; however, this influence is not yet well understood. This study employs reconstructed daily suspended sediment concentration (SSC) data from the Yellow Sea's offshore region to investigate the dynamics of offshore transport. Our analysis on an interannual scale shows that offshore SSC correlates more with temperature gradients at the oceanic front than with winter storms, despite the latter's vital role in causing frontal instability. The observed increase in offshore transport over the past two decades is likely connected to Kuroshio Current warming, which has strengthened the horizontal density gradient at the oceanic front, driving the strengthened offshore transport of coastal sediments during instability episodes. Knowing the amount of sediment transported in rivers is important in river and hydraulic engineering. In essence, sediment transport process is very complex, whose direct measurement is not only challenging but also costly. In this regard, several equations have been developed to estimate sediment discharge, while their estimations may be an order of magnitudes different from one another under specific circumstances. In a bid to improve the estimation of sediment transport, this study proposed a new data-driven equation based on 543 reliable field measurements at 25 rivers using the Modified honey bee mating optimization (MHBMO) algorithm. The data include mean flow velocity, water surface slope, mean flow depth, median particle size, water surface width, suspended load, and bed load measured in the field. The performance of the new equation was compared to those of Yang, Engelund and Hansen, Shen and Hung, and Ackers and White using 6 metrics. Moreover, another nature-inspired optimization algorithm, i.e., genetic algorithm (GA) was employed to enhance the comparison. Based on the results, the MHBMO-based equation outperformed other estimation models and served as the best method in the ranking analysis. For instance, it improves the determination coefficient of Yang's equation, which is one of the widely-used equations recommended by the United States Bureau of Reclamation by 15.2%. Despite being ranked the second, the GA-based equation was only marginally less precise than the MHBMO-based model. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis indicates that the sediment load is mostly sensitive to mean flow depth. Vegetation-induced sedimentary structures (VISS) are bed features resulting from flow-vegetation feedback and turbulence induced by vegetation at riparian sites. Generally, these sedimentary structures commence at the individual plant level, but sediment accumulation over time may lead to the formation of fluvial islands. Additionally, riparian vegetation exposed to current may provoke local scouring. However, little research has been done on how the permeability of plants affects flow fields and sedimentary processes. Therefore, the main aim of the current study is to experimentally investigate patterns of local scour and deposition around artificial obstacles with six different levels of porosity, using a systematically designed flume experiment. Two experimental setups were implemented, with sediment transport occurring either as bed load or in suspension. Porosity, as a measure of the volume of porous space to bulk volume, was determined using optical porosity which was estimated from digital photographs. Furthermore, VISS of individual P. nigra shrubs were investigated at different seasonal stages (leafless and full foliage) at the Loire River, France, for comparison. Results show that increasing porosity caused a reduction in sediment deposition from suspension and locally scoured bed load sediment. A threshold value for optical porosity was determined, at which point a prolonged area of flow calm develops behind the barrier, promoting the accumulation of suspended sediment and suppressing local scour caused by bed load transport. An empirical model is presented, which assesses sediment erosion and deposition volumes at porous obstructions, considering (a) the flow-exposed surface area, (b) the obstruction's optical porosity, and (c) the intensity of the incoming flow. On the field scale, local scour holes were identified at P. nigra shrubs where flood-caused debris obstructions were stuck at their front, lowering the obstruction's porosity and encouraging local scour processes. The identification and quantification of aeolian sand contributions are essential for understanding the formation of dune fields and mechanisms of modern surface processes. In the present study, we take aeolian sand in the Otindag dune field (hereafter, often referred to as, simply, Otindag) as the research object. The dune field's immediate source is quantitatively identified based on heavy minerals and the Conservativeness Index (CI), Consensus Ranking (CR), and the Consistent Tracer Selection (CTS) method. The primary source area of the aeolian sand was found to be from the northwestern, upwind area of the Otindag (59 ± 14%), followed by the Yinshan Mountain (17 ± 10%) and the lake basin (23 ± 12%). The proposed sediment transport model elucidates that sediments from the upwind of the Otindag are directly transported from the northwest to the Otindag, where they are deposited. Materials from the southern Yinshan Mountains are carried by rivers to the southern edge of the Otindag, where they are subsequently transported by wind and ultimately deposited. The lake deposits within the Otindag also contribute to the aeolian sand supply under the influence of wind. This study demonstrates that the fingerprinting techniques of CI, CR, and CTS serve as successful strategies for conducting quantitative provenance research in dune fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is of great practical value to explore the correlation between the vertical curve radius of desert highway and the increase of sand accumulation in local lines, and to select the appropriate vertical curve radius for reducing the risk of sand accumulation. In this study, three-dimensional models of desert highway embankments with different vertical curve radii were constructed, and Fluent software was used to simulate the wind-sand flow field and sand accumulation distribution of vertical curve embankments. The results show that: (1) Along the direction of the road, the concave and the convex vertical curve embankments have the effect of collecting and diverging the wind-sand flow, respectively. When the radius of the concave vertical curve is 3000 m, 5000 m, 8000 m, 10000 m and 20000 m, the wind velocity in the middle of the vertical curve is 31.76%, 22.58%, 10.78%, 10.53% and 10.44%, higher than that at both ends. When the radius of the convex vertical curve is 6500 m, 8000 m, 10000 m, 20000 m and 30000 m, the wind velocity at both ends of the vertical curve is 14.06%, 9.99%, 6.14%, 3.22% and 2.41%, higher than that in the middle. The diversion effect also decreases with the increase of the radius. (2) The conductivity of the concave and convex vertical curve embankments with different radii is greater than 1, which is the sediment transport roadbed. The conductivity increases with the increase of radius and gradually tends to be stable. When the radius of the concave and convex vertical curves reaches 8000 m and 20000 m respectively, the phenomenon of sand accumulation is no longer serious. Under the same radius condition, the concave vertical curve embankment is more prone to sand accumulation than the convex one. (3) Considering the strength of the collection and diversion of the vertical curve embankment with different radii, and the sand accumulation of the vertical curve embankment in the desert section of Wuma Expressway, the radius of the concave vertical curve is not less than 8000 m, and the radius of the convex vertical curve is not less than 20000 m, which can effectively reduce the sand accumulation of the vertical curve embankment. River floods and human activities would impact land‐to‐sea sediment transport, which is essential for understanding the evolution of the global sediment cycle in the Anthropocene era. This study focused on investigating how river floods and a dike constructed in 2005 along a river channel influence sediment transport from the Ou River Estuary to the East China Sea. A validated three‐dimensional sediment transport model based on the Finite Volume Community Ocean Model was utilized for this study. The presence of the dike obstructs alongshore currents and fish migrations, leading to negative effects on marine ecology. Therefore, selective dismantling and ecological restoration measures are deemed necessary. Three scenarios were considered in this study: no‐dike, dike‐constructed, and dike‐partially‐removed conditions, along with various types of river floods. The findings indicate that the monthly sediment flux to the sea decreased by 7.7% from 8.11 × 106 to 7.49 × 106 t following dike construction, while the proportion of cross‐shore sediment flux to the total flux increased from 37% to 59%. The dike consistently has a greater impact than river floods in their interactions. However, partially removing the dike reduces its influence and restores sediment transport to pre‐dike levels, the effectiveness of which is more pronounced with more frequent floods, larger volumes, and rising sea levels. This study provides valuable insights into the interplay between river floods and dikes on sediment transport, thereby enhancing our understanding of the repercussions of human interventions on sediment dynamics. Natural sand samples collected from bedload or suspension transport can be too small to be sieved. However, related transported mass to sediment size is crucial to calibrate sediment transport models. Image analysis technique can be an easy and cheap alternative. The present study proposes a general law valid for natural sand grains and small gravels that statistically relates elongation to flatness of particles and gives after some assumptions on grain shape and orientation of grains at the sieve mesh passage, the closest distribution of mass to sieving technique from images of grains given by a flatbed scanner. The proposed model is based on the hypothesis of an ellipsoidal grain shape and a preferential grain crossing aligned with the sieve diagonal. The evolution of riverbeds is greatly impacted by changes in the water–sediment relationship resulting from the movement of debris flows. However, little is known about the influence of management in chronic sediment source areas on the evolution of main‐stem riverbed morphology. In this study, we used multi‐source remote sensing images covering the past 50 years along with water–sediment and topographic data from a river basin, and sediment transport data from debris flows, to analyze the evolutionary processes of the middle and lower reaches of the Daying River (DYR) at the China‐Myanmar border. Our results showed that (1) management of the sediment source area shifted the riverbed morphology from aggradation to erosion, transforming the river surface from wide and shallow to narrow and deep, and the channel from multi‐threaded to single‐threaded; (2) the active alluvial area, marginal bar area, and average river width exhibited an inverted V‐shaped trend, increasing by at least 23% and then decreasing by more than 59%; and (3) the evolution of riverbed morphology contributed to the stability of downstream riverbeds, improved flood control, and enhanced utilization of the floodplains. Debris floods commonly occur in steep channels with an abundant sediment supply, and they can cause significant damage, primarily due to their higher sediment concentrations and negative impacts upon bank erosion, deep scouring and aggradation. These key hazards pose challenges for traditional assessment methods, making quantification difficult. This became obvious during a recent catastrophic debris flood that occurred on July 12, 2022, in the Heishuigou catchment (102 km2), northern Sichuan Province, China. In this case study, we developed an integrated methodology for assessing this debris flood event by incorporating field surveys, hydrological and hydraulic modelling and sediment transport calculations. Detailed information such as topographic maps, photographs, deposits, grain size distributions and inundation depths was collected to analyse the material sources, validate the parameters and conduct model calculations. The peak debris flood discharge and the supra‐critical bed shear stress ratios, estimated from hydrological and dynamic models, were incorporated to analyse the debris flood's typology and characterize its destructive mechanisms. The regional frequency–volume relationship established through bedload transport calculations was calibrated using the volume of the deposits determined via field investigation. Proglacial forefields commonly include highly dynamic fluvial systems associated with the fundamental instability between topography, flow hydraulics and sediment transport. However, there is limited knowledge of how these systems respond to changing subglacial hydrology and sediment supply. We investigated this relationship using the first continuous field‐collected data sets for both suspended and bedload sediment export and proglacial river dynamics for an Alpine glacier forefield, the Glacier d'Otemma, Switzerland. The results show a strong sensitivity of fluvial morphodynamics to the balance between sediment transport capacity and supply. When subglacial bedload export rates exceeded fluvial transport capacity, we found bar construction leading to net forefield aggradation and surficial coarsening, especially on bar heads. This intensified braiding buffered the downstream transport of coarse sediment. When subglacial bedload export rates were lower than transport capacity, incision occurred, with reduced braiding intensity, net erosion and important amounts of bedload leaving the proglacial system. We found a net fining of surficial deposits except for very isolated coarsening patterns on bar heads. Thus, proglacial forefield morphodynamics are strongly conditioned by subglacial hydrology and sediment supply, but this conditioning is also influenced by the response of the forefield itself. Proglacial forefields have an important influence on the longitudinal connectivity of sediment flux in regions sensitive to climate change, such as recently deglaciated high mountain areas. The linkages we report between subglacial processes and river morphodynamics are critical for understanding the development of embryonic forefield ecosystems. Results show that the fluvial landscape in recently deglaciated terrains changes rapidly, influenced by the balance between the amount of sediment being transported from under the glacier and the river's capacity to carry it. When the released amount of sediment matches the river's capacity, the deposition of coarser material dominates and the stream becomes more complex with increasing braiding intensity. However, when the river carries more sediment than supplied by the glacier, flow becomes more confined into fewer channels, promoting the erosion of previously deposited material, particularly for the coarser sediment fractions. The study emphasizes how both the river configuration and the landscape near a melting glacier depend on whether the river itself can transport the quantities of sediment delivered by the glacier. This balance can affect the downstream sediment flux from glaciered catchments and the development of ecosystems following climate change‐induced glacier retreat. Estimating sediment transport in mountain rivers is challenging because of sediment supply limitation, broad grain size distributions, complex flow hydraulics, and large form drag. Consequently, sediment transport equations are lacking for application in rivers where the bed is coarse and largely immobile, but small fractions of finer, transportable sized material contribute disproportionately to bedload transport. We introduce a framework for estimating sediment transport in mountain rivers that addresses two limitations: estimating the shear stress acting on mobile grains, and accounting for the difference between mobility of size fractions, that is, whether or not a specific grain size can move at a given flow, and transportability, which we define as how much of that size present in the bed will be recruited into transport. We use two bedload data sets to develop equations for predicting incipient motion and transport rates of each grain size fraction present in the bed. We tested the new equations against incipient motion and sediment transport data we collected from streams in the Rocky Mountains, USA, and against published regional sediment yield data. Using this method results in transport estimates where the finer fractions, despite being a small fraction of the bed surface, make up a large part of the total yield. Fractions greater than the median bed grain size are mobile only during peak flood flows, consistent with the existing mountain river bedload data sets. The approach is parsimonious, requiring only data that are often readily available or obtainable: a bed grain size distribution, hydraulic geometry measurements, and discharge. The motion state of a particle is a crucial aspect of sediment transport problems. In this paper, we conceptualized three states: stillness, "transport", and "non‐transport", considering that not all the particle motions contribute significantly to the mean sediment transport rate. Starting from a data set of bed‐load particle tracks obtained from particle tracking velocimetry, we removed the bias from experimental uncertainty and applied one‐dimensional, instantaneous, and non‐parametric criteria for distinguishing the states. We described the kinematics of particles in transport and non‐transport states, presenting some sample trajectories and the distributions of particle velocity and acceleration. While the transport state presents a clear distinction between stream‐wise and transverse particle velocity, the non‐transport state is related to isotropic particle jiggling, and does not significantly contribute to the bed‐load rate. Vice‐versa, the particle motions in the non‐transport state are relevant for other summary indicators of the transport process, such as the mean number of moving particles and mean particle velocity. We discuss how applying the proposed non‐parametric criterion for state separation is beneficial compared to parameter‐dependent alternatives available in the literature. Finally, we provide an outlook on possible applications of our concept for the investigation of other sediment transport processes (incipient motion, solid‐fluid interface, creeping flow). Understanding the dynamics of shoreline change is essential for efficient coastal management. This research provides a thorough analysis of the long-term changes to the shoreline in the Tamil Nadu district of Tirunelveli, India, spanning five decades (1972–2022). Remote sensing techniques and digital shoreline analysis techniques were employed to investigate the temporal variations and underlying mechanisms influencing shoreline dynamics. Remote sensing methods include satellite imagery analysis, digital shoreline analysis techniques involve GIS-based mapping and measurement of coastal features. The statistical methods like EPR, LRR and NSM techniques were used in this study to identify the shoreline changes. It considers the sedimentary structures of tidal flats and grain size investigations in the region to improve our comprehension of the geological characteristics and sediment dynamics driving shoreline alterations. The findings demonstrate how the shoreline location at Koodankulam changed considerably during the course of the research. This study report spans a sizable length of time and provides significant insights on the long-term behaviour of the Tirunelveli district coastline. Sedimentary structures and grain size investigations provide insights into erosion, deposition patterns, and sediment transport, crucial for understanding shoreline dynamics. The three primary very high erosion hotspots in the research area are Kunjanvilai, Koodankulam, and Kuttam. At a rate of − 23.5, − 23.6, and − 23.6 m/year, maximum erosion is shown by EPR, LRR, and WLR. This study outcomes major two regions like Vijayapathi and Anjugramam are facing more accretion zone. A maximum of 13.33, 11.14, and 11.14 m/year is shown by EPR, LRR, and WLR. According to projection research, the spans will measure 60.67 km in 2042 and 59.62 km in 2032, respectively.
