3. Supporting students through the COVID-19 pandemic: the perspectives of food pantry workers.

- Abstract
Background: College students in the United States are disproportionately impacted by food insecurity, which is associated with diminished health outcomes and poor academic performance. One key resource to support students through periods of food insecurity are on-campus food pantries, which distribute food, personal hygiene products, and other essential items. But as colleges and universities navigated through the COVID-19 pandemic, many campuses closed their food pantries as the demand for their services among students grew. Few studies, however, have assessed how food pantries at academic institutions navigated through the COVID-19 pandemic to support students. With this knowledge gap in mind, our study objectives included the following: (1) to compare staff members' perceptions on the impact of COVID-19 on food pantries of academic institutions; and (2) to provide recommendations to improve campus food pantries in navigating through future public health threats. Methods: The research team conducted a qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews with staff members, including directors and supervisors, of food pantries located on the campuses of colleges and universities in the state of Connecticut. Participants also completed a short post-interview survey assessing demographic information and perspectives on food insecurity-related issues impacting their respective college or university. A template organizing approach was used to allow members of the research team to create a codebook of both inductive and deductive codes and identify emergent themes from the qualitative data. Results: Twelve interviews were conducted, of which 7 participants represented four-year and 5 from 2-year institutions. Based on our thematic analysis if the interviews, we identified four central themes: (1) Persistent Pre-COVID-19 Pandemic Barriers to Food Pantry Utilization; (2) Innovative responses to the COVID-19 pandemic; (3) International Students' Reliance on Food Pantries at Four-Year Colleges and Universities; and (4) Demand for Non-Food-Related Items. Conclusions: Our research underscores the importance of lessons gleaned by the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly through the lens of on-campus food pantry workers. Their unique insight and lessons learned ought to be considered when academic institutions deliberate allocating resources and making key decisions to help mitigate food insecurity concerns on their campuses. En este artículo se analiza la vigilancia heteronormativa ejercida como disciplina escolar; nos aproximamos a este fenómeno a través de la perspectiva de género, pues detectamos que las normas que rigen la vida escolar expresan patrones estereotipados de conducta sexual. El estudio, de corte cualitativo, fue realizado en una escuela secundaria pública ubicada al oriente de la Ciudad de México. Encontramos que la disciplina escolar da lugar a una forma de vigilancia institucional que produce y refuerza roles de género que naturalizan agresiones físicas y verbales hacia las mujeres, personas homosexuales y en general entre varones. Además, encontramos que la institución escolar promueve la adopción de códigos sexistas que denotan una moral de carácter judeocristiano, claramente alejada de la educación laica. School discipline as heteronormative surveillance. Ethnography of punishment in a secondary school in Iztapalapa Abstract This article analyzes the heteronormative surveillance exercised as school discipline; we approach this phenomenon through the gender perspective because we detected that the rules governing school life express stereotyped patterns of sexual behavior. The qualitative study was carried out in a public high school located in the east of Mexico City. We found that school discipline gives rise to a form of institutional heteronormative surveillance that produces and reinforces gender roles that naturalize aggressive language towards women, homosexuals and males in general. In addition, we found that the school institution promotes the adoption of sexist codes that denote a Judeo-Christian moral character, clearly distant from secular education.

6. Fish oocyte morphology detection using neural networks: a comparison of YOLO architectures

ABSTRACT The recognition of oocytes, in their maturational stages, allow estimate the ovarian development and the type of spawning of a species. Although, distinguishing oocytes on histological images requires a visual and subjective interpretation by the specialist. With the development of deep learning techniques, automatic object detection has become an important mechanism for this task. However, studies that use deep learning techniques have not been widely explored for the analysis of fish oocyte samples so far. In this paper, we propose the use of YOLO, a family of convolutional neural networks, for oocyte morphology detection of Centropomus undecimalis fish. The research uses an image database with 5,680 oocytes with different maturation stadiums (PV - pre-vitellogenesis, VI - early vitellogenesis and VF - late vitellogenesis), in histological images, divided into training, testing and validation, and detection performed by YOLOv3, YOLOv4, and YOLOv5 architectures. The results obtained were promising, highlighting that the YOLOv5l model, in the detection of oocytes of the VF class, reached the best values in the metrics precision, recall, mAP@.5 and mAP@.95 with 85.4%, 95.3%, 95.7%, and 75.9%, respectively. When considering all classes, YOLOv5l was the model that obtained the best results in the analyzed metrics.

We present numerous aspects of the evolution of the LP 890-9 (SPECULOOS-2/TOI-4306) planetary system, focusing on the likelihood that planet c can support life. We find that the host star reaches the main sequence in 1 Gyr and that planet c lies close to the inner boundary of the habitable zone. We find the magma ocean stage can last up to 50 Myr, remove eight Earth oceans of water, and leave up to 2000 bars of oxygen in the atmosphere. However, if the planet forms with a hydrogen envelope as small as 0.1 Earth masses, no water will be lost during the star's pre-main-sequence phase from thermal escape processes. We find that the planets are unlikely to be in a 3:1 mean motion resonance and that both planets tidally circularize within 0.5 Gyr when tidal dissipation is held constant. However, if tidal dissipation is a function of mantle temperature and rheology, then we find that planet c's orbit may require more than 7 Gyr to circularize, during which time tidal heating may reach hundreds of terawatts. We thus conclude that the habitability of planet c depends most strongly on the initial volatile content and internal properties, but no data yet preclude the viability of an active biosphere on the planet.
