Indian women account for 36.6% of suicide-related deaths worldwide and gender-based violence (GBV) is a key social determinant. The cultural theory of suicide (CTS), which synthesizes risk factors and explanations of suicide among racial/ethnic minorities, posits four tenets: idioms of distress, cultural sanctions, and social discord. Our study applied the CTS to Indian women from slums reporting GBV to explore (1) culturally relevant risk pathways towards suicidal ideation using qualitative analyses, and test (2) the association between idioms of distress and suicidal ideation. 112 women from urban slums were recruited and 99 completed surveys. A subset were administered qualitative interviews. Aim 1 explored the CTS framework among participants describing suicidal ideation in qualitative interviews [ n = 18]; Aim 2 explored if idioms of distress severity was associated with suicidal ideation through an ANCOVA [ N = 99]. Idioms of distress such as 'tension' indicated suicidal ideation. Communities did not sanction suicidal ideation, leading to secrecy regarding disclosure. Women in 'love marriages' (versus arranged marriages) reported minority stress. Social discord heightened suicidal thoughts. Results of the ANCOVA confirmed that women reporting suicidal ideation had higher idioms of distress severity ( M  = 28.56, SD  = 6.37), compared to women who did not ( M  = 21.77, SD  = 6.07), F (1, 96) = 28.58, p  < .001 (η p 2  = .23). Our study empirically validates the CTS among Indian GBV survivors. In this study, we focused on the mechanism of the electrocatalytic oxidation of thiocyanate, which in traditional electrodes typically requires high overpotentials. As models for reducing these overpotentials and catalyzing the reaction, we used a set of modified cobalt phthalocyanines (CoPc), known as electrocatalysts. Using DFT calculations, we explored how modifications to CoPc by adding electron-donating and withdrawing groups and the coordination of 4-amino thiophenol impact the oxidation process. The reaction mechanism for the electrooxidation of thiocyanate has remained elusive, where only the reaction products have been properly identified, including hydrogen cyanide and sulfate ions at pH 4. The approach for understanding the reaction was considering the formation of an (SCN) 2 dimer as an intermediate that is a suitable precursor of the products of the reaction. Our findings showed that electron-donating groups and 4-amino thiophenol coordination lowered oxidation potentials, enhancing electrocatalytic efficiency and promoting thiocyanate radical formation and release before dimerization occurs. In contrast, electron-withdrawing groups facilitated dimerization while attached to cobalt, albeit with lower electrocatalytic proficiency. This study highlights the crucial role of CoPc modifications in thiocyanate oxidation, demonstrating the potential for improved electrocatalytic processes through tailored catalyst design.

This descriptive study focuses on the oral health of African migrants, especially adolescents, arriving in the Canary Islands. Notably, these patients show a high prevalence of caries and oral mucosal alterations. These are influenced by multifactorial factors, such as living conditions in their country of origin, hygiene habits, and sugar-rich diets. Furthermore, it is worth noting the need for inclusive oral health policies in receiving countries and the need to develop oral health care protocols in regions with migratory flows to effectively address oral health needs and facilitate the integration of migrants. We included 104 migrant patients from different African countries, mainly from North and West Africa, and analyzed their oral health status. We found that 89.4% of the patients had dental caries, with a higher prevalence in North Africa. Moreover, 25% of patients showed oral mucosal alterations, with leukoedema being the most common condition. Regarding malocclusions, 42.6% of patients had Class I malocclusion and only 15.4% had dental crowding. Regarding intraosseous lesions, 97.1% of the patients had no lesions and most did not require dental prostheses. Excessive and uncontrolled application of agrochemicals has resulted in contamination of terrestrial and aquatic environments. In the past decade, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been studied as agrochemical release systems to enhance efficiency while reducing the leaching of toxic molecules to the environment. In this work, we take a further step and use organic agrochemicals as linkers in the preparation of MOFs, which we have called AgroMOFs. Particularly, we have prepared a novel 2D framework, named GR-MOF-20, based on the flexible herbicide glyphosine (H 5 Gly) and the widely used antibacterial and fungicide Cu 2+ . After complete characterization by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), a fascinating transformation of the structure to a novel 3D-MOF (GR-MOF-21) after in water is observed, together with a burst degradation (86.0 ± 3.2% after 72 h). Considering the bioactivity of its building blocks (H 5 Gly and Cu 2+ ), the combined herbicidal and antibacterial activities of GR-MOF-21 were demonstrated. Aqueous solutions prepared with GR-MOF-20 (450 mg L -1 ) demonstrated a better inhibition effect (21.7 ± 2.9% after 7 days) in the germination of seeds of the invasive weed Lolium multiflorum than the free H 5 Gly (13.3 ± 2.9%). Further, the selectivity of GR-MOF-21 was tested against a nontarget plant (wheat, Triticum aestivum ). Finally, GR-MOF-21 showed an important antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas syringae , achieving the results obtained with Cu 2+ solutions. These observations demonstrated that the use of herbicide and antibacterial units in the MOF construction is an efficient approach to controlling bacteria and weed plants without damaging wheat crops.

We present a study of the cooperative nature of the forces dominating the interaction between gold atoms and aryl-aryl stacking. For this purpose, we modeled a series of complexes of the type dpm(AuR) 2 (dpm= bis(phoshino)methane; R = -C 6 H 5 , -C 6 F 5 , -C 6 Cl 5 , and -Cl). The models were calculated at the MP2, CCSD(T), and DFT-D3(BJ) (PBE and TPSS) levels of theory. The results show Au-Au and aryl-aryl stacking distances associated with noncovalent interactions. Also, the Wiberg indices, NBO, NCI, and QTAIM analyses exposed a low-density character between the gold atoms and aryl-aryl stacking, revealing that this contribution explains the stability of the complexes via dispersive interactions. Finally, the absorption spectra obtained are comparable with the experimental ones, and the orbitals obtained demonstrate that after the transitions, the orbitals are delocalized between the gold atoms and the vertex atoms of the molecules.

Afforestation is increasingly recognized as a critical strategy to restore ecosystems and enhance biodiversity on post-agricultural landscapes. However, agricultural legacies, such as altered soil structure, nutrient imbalances, and depleted microbial diversity, can slow down forest establishment or cause ecosystems to deviate from expected successional trajectories. In this opinion paper, we explore the potential of soil inoculations as a tool to overcome these challenges by introducing beneficial microbial communities that can accelerate ecosystem recovery and forest development. Restoring soil biodiversity is a crucial aspect of this process that drives broader ecosystem functionality and resilience. We highlight the need to carefully consider the type and timing of inoculations and to ensure compatibility between the inoculum and recipient site characteristics to optimize the establishment of introduced species. While tree productivity is often a central focus of afforestation efforts, the restoration of soil biodiversity, which will also contribute to increased ecosystem-level functions, should also be a priority for long-term forest resilience. Agricultural legacies add complexities to the restoration process, creating unique challenges that need to be addressed in restoration planning. Thus, successful inoculation strategies require a thorough understanding of both donor and recipient site characteristics, also in relation to potential mismatches related to soil physiochemical properties to avoid unintended consequences such as the non-establishment of introduced species. Additionally, we call for the re-evaluation of afforestation targets and the development of standardized monitoring protocols that track the success of inoculation efforts, particularly regarding soil health, microbial community establishment, and biodiversity recovery. By integrating inoculation practices within a broader restoration framework, we can enhance the resilience, biodiversity, and ecosystem functionality of newly afforested landscapes.
