Abstract

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are prime candidate sources of the high-energy, astrophysical neutrinos detected by IceCube. This is demonstrated by the real-time multi-messenger detection of the blazar TXS 0506+056 and the recent evidence of neutrino emission from NGC 1068 from a separate time-averaged study. However, the production mechanism of the astrophysical neutrinos in AGN is not well established which can be resolved via correlation studies with photon observations. For neutrinos produced due to photohadronic interactions in AGN, in addition to a correlation of neutrinos with high-energy photons, there would also be a correlation of neutrinos with photons emitted at radio wavelengths. In this work, we perform an in-depth stacking study of the correlation between 15 GHz radio observations of AGN reported in the MOJAVE XV catalog, and ten years of neutrino data from IceCube. We also use a time-dependent approach which improves the statistical power of the stacking analysis. No significant correlation was found for both analyses and upper limits are reported. When compared to the IceCube diffuse flux, at 100 TeV and for a spectral index of 2.5, the upper limits derived are $\sim3\%$ and $\sim9\%$ for the time-averaged and time-dependent case, respectively., Comment: 14 Pages 7 Figures

Abstract

We present a search for an eV-scale sterile neutrino using 7.5 years of data from the IceCube DeepCore detector. The analysis uses a sample of 21,914 events with energies between 5 and 150 GeV to search for sterile neutrinos through atmospheric muon neutrino disappearance. Improvements in event selection and treatment of systematic uncertainties provide greater statistical power compared to previous DeepCore sterile neutrino searches. Our results are compatible with the absence of mixing between active and sterile neutrino states, and we place constraints on the mixing matrix elements $|U_{\mu 4}|^2 < 0.0534$ and $|U_{\tau 4}|^2 < 0.0574$ at 90% CL under the assumption that $\Delta m^2_{41}\geq 1\;\mathrm{eV^2}$. These null results add to the growing tension between anomalous appearance results and constraints from disappearance searches in the 3+1 sterile neutrino landscape., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

The recent IceCube detection of TeV neutrino emission from the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068 suggests that active galactic nuclei (AGN) could make a sizable contribution to the diffuse flux of astrophysical neutrinos. The absence of TeV $\gamma$-rays from NGC 1068 indicates neutrino production in the vicinity of the supermassive black hole, where the high radiation density leads to $\gamma$-ray attenuation. Therefore, any potential neutrino emission from similar sources is not expected to correlate with high-energy $\gamma$-rays. Disk-corona models predict neutrino emission from Seyfert galaxies to correlate with keV X-rays, as they are tracers of coronal activity. Using through-going track events from the Northern Sky recorded by IceCube between 2011 and 2021, we report results from a search for individual and aggregated neutrino signals from 27 additional Seyfert galaxies that are contained in the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS). Besides the generic single power-law, we evaluate the spectra predicted by the disk-corona model. Assuming all sources to be intrinsically similar to NGC 1068, our findings constrain the collective neutrino emission from X-ray bright Seyfert galaxies in the Northern Hemisphere, but, at the same time, show excesses of neutrinos that could be associated with the objects NGC 4151 and CGCG 420-015. Abstract

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are promising candidate sources of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos since they provide environments rich in matter and photon targets where cosmic ray interactions may lead to the production of gamma rays and neutrinos. We searched for high-energy neutrino emission from AGN using the $\textit{Swift}$-BAT Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) catalog of hard X-ray sources and 12 years of IceCube muon track data. First, upon performing a stacked search, no significant emission was found. Second, we searched for neutrinos from a list of 43 candidate sources and found an excess from the direction of two sources, Seyfert galaxies NGC 1068 and NGC 4151. We observed NGC 1068 at flux $\phi_{\nu_{\mu}+\bar{\nu}_{\mu}}$ = $4.02_{-1.52}^{+1.58} \times 10^{-11}$ TeV$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ normalized at 1 TeV, with power-law spectral index, $\gamma$ = 3.10$^{+0.26}_{-0.22}$, consistent with previous IceCube results. The observation of a neutrino excess from the direction of NGC 4151 is at a post-trial significance of 2.9$\sigma$. If interpreted as an astrophysical signal, the excess observed from NGC 4151 corresponds to a flux $\phi_{\nu_{\mu}+\bar{\nu}_{\mu}}$ = $1.51_{-0.81}^{+0.99} \times 10^{-11}$ TeV$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ normalized at 1 TeV and $\gamma$ = 2.83$^{+0.35}_{-0.28}$.

Abstract

We present the first three-parameter fit to a 3+1 sterile neutrino model using 7.634 years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory on $\nu_\mu+\overline{\nu}_\mu$ charged-current interactions in the energy range 500--9976 GeV. Our analysis is sensitive to the mass-squared splitting between the heaviest and lightest mass state ($\Delta m_{41}^2$), the mixing matrix element connecting muon flavor to the fourth mass state ($|U_{\mu4}|^2$), and the element connecting tau flavor to the fourth mass state ($|U_{\tau4}|^2$). Predicted propagation effects in matter enhance the signature through a resonance as atmospheric neutrinos from the Northern Hemisphere traverse the Earth to the IceCube detector at the South Pole. The remaining sterile neutrino matrix elements are left fixed, with $|U_{e4}|^2= 0$ and $\delta_{14}=0$, as they have a negligible effect, and $\delta_{24}=\pi$ is set to give the most conservative limits. The result is consistent with the no-sterile neutrino hypothesis with a probability of 4.3%. Profiling the likelihood of each parameter yields the 90\% confidence levels: $ 2.4\,\mathrm{eV}^{2} < \Delta m_{41}^2 <9.6\,\mathrm{eV}^{2} $ , $0.0081 < |U_{\mu4}|^2 < 0.10$ , and $|U_{\tau4}|^2< 0.035$, which narrows the allowed parameter-space for $|U_{\tau4}|^2$. Abstract

We provide supporting details for the search for a 3+1 sterile neutrino using data collected over eleven years at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The analysis uses atmospheric muon-flavored neutrinos from 0.5 to 100\, TeV that traverse the Earth to reach the IceCube detector, and finds a best-fit point at $\sin^2(2\theta_{24}) = 0.16$ and $\Delta m^{2}_{41} = 3.5$ eV$^2$ with a goodness-of-fit p-value of 12\% and consistency with the null hypothesis of no oscillations to sterile neutrinos with a p-value of 3.1\%. Several improvements were made over past analyses, which are reviewed in this article, including upgrades to the reconstruction and the study of sources of systematic uncertainty. We provide details of the fit quality and discuss stability tests that split the data for separate samples, comparing results. Abstract

This Letter presents the result of a 3+1 sterile neutrino search using 10.7 years of IceCube data. We analyze atmospheric muon neutrinos that traverse the Earth with energies ranging from 0.5 to 100 TeV, incorporating significant improvements in modeling neutrino flux and detector response compared to earlier studies. Notably, for the first time, we categorize data into starting and through-going events, distinguishing neutrino interactions with vertices inside or outside the instrumented volume, to improve energy resolution. The best-fit point for a 3+1 model is found to be at $\sin^2(2\theta_{24}) = 0.16$ and $\Delta m^{2}_{41} = 3.5$ eV$^2$, which agrees with previous iterations of this study. The result is consistent with the null hypothesis of no sterile neutrinos with a p-value of 3.1\%., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

Galactic PeVatrons are sources that can accelerate cosmic rays to PeV energies. The high-energy cosmic rays are expected to interact with the surrounding ambient material or radiation, resulting in the production of gamma rays and neutrinos. To optimize for the detection of such associated production of gamma rays and neutrinos for a given source morphology and spectrum, a multi-messenger analysis that combines gamma rays and neutrinos is required. In this study, we use the Multi-Mission Maximum Likelihood framework (3ML) with IceCube Maximum Likelihood Analysis software (i3mla) and HAWC Accelerated Likelihood (HAL) to search for a correlation between 22 known gamma-ray sources from the third HAWC gamma-ray catalog and 14 years of IceCube track-like data. No significant neutrino emission from the direction of the HAWC sources was found. We report the best-fit gamma-ray model and 90% CL neutrino flux limit from the 22 sources. From the neutrino flux limit, we conclude that the gamma-ray emission from five of the sources can not be produced purely from hadronic interactions. We report the limit for the fraction of gamma rays produced by hadronic interactions for these five sources.

Abstract

More than 10,000 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) with a diameter of 80 mm will be installed in multi-PMT Digital Optical Modules (mDOMs) of the IceCube Upgrade. These have been tested and pre-calibrated at two sites. A throughput of more than 1000 PMTs per week with both sites was achieved with a modular design of the testing facilities and highly automated testing procedures. The testing facilities can easily be adapted to other PMTs, such that they can, e.g., be re-used for testing the PMTs for IceCube-Gen2. Single photoelectron response, high voltage dependence, time resolution, prepulse, late pulse, afterpulse probabilities, and dark rates were measured for each PMT. Abstract

We report on a measurement of astrophysical tau neutrinos with 9.7 years of IceCube data. Using convolutional neural networks trained on images derived from simulated events, seven candidate $\nu_\tau$ events were found with visible energies ranging from roughly 20 TeV to 1 PeV and a median expected parent $\nu_\tau$ energy of about 200 TeV. Considering backgrounds from astrophysical and atmospheric neutrinos, and muons from $\pi^\pm/K^\pm$ decays in atmospheric air showers, we obtain a total estimated background of about 0.5 events, dominated by non-$\nu_\tau$ astrophysical neutrinos. Thus, we rule out the absence of astrophysical $\nu_\tau$ at the $5\sigma$ level. Abstract

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory relies on an array of photomultiplier tubes to detect Cherenkov light produced by charged particles in the South Pole ice. IceCube data analyses depend on an in-depth characterization of the glacial ice, and on novel approaches in event reconstruction that utilize fast approximations of photoelectron yields. Here, a more accurate model is derived for event reconstruction that better captures our current knowledge of ice optical properties. When evaluated on a Monte Carlo simulation set, the median angular resolution for in-ice particle showers improves by over a factor of three compared to a reconstruction based on a simplified model of the ice. The most substantial improvement is obtained when including effects of birefringence due to the polycrystalline structure of the ice. Abstract

A measurement of the diffuse astrophysical neutrino spectrum is presented using IceCube data collected from 2011-2022 (10.3 years). We developed novel detection techniques to search for events with a contained vertex and exiting track induced by muon neutrinos undergoing a charged-current interaction. Searching for these starting track events allows us to not only more effectively reject atmospheric muons but also atmospheric neutrino backgrounds in the southern sky, opening a new window to the sub-100 TeV astrophysical neutrino sky. The event selection is constructed using a dynamic starting track veto and machine learning algorithms. We use this data to measure the astrophysical diffuse flux as a single power law flux (SPL) with a best-fit spectral index of $\gamma = 2.58 ^{+0.10}_{-0.09}$ and per-flavor normalization of $\phi^{\mathrm{Astro}}_{\mathrm{per-flavor}} = 1.68 ^{+0.19}_{-0.22} \times 10^{-18} \times \mathrm{GeV}^{-1} \mathrm{cm}^{-2} \mathrm{s}^{-1} \mathrm{sr}^{-1}$ (at 100 TeV). The sensitive energy range for this dataset is 3 - 550 TeV under the SPL assumption. This data was also used to measure the flux under a broken power law, however we did not find any evidence of a low energy cutoff., Comment: 27 pages, 28 figures

Abstract

Name that Neutrino is a citizen science project where volunteers aid in classification of events for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, an immense particle detector at the geographic South Pole. From March 2023 to September 2023, volunteers did classifications of videos produced from simulated data of both neutrino signal and background interactions. Name that Neutrino obtained more than 128,000 classifications by over 1,800 registered volunteers that were compared to results obtained by a deep neural network machine-learning algorithm. Possible improvements for both Name that Neutrino and the deep neural network are discussed.

Abstract

Laparoscopic robot-assisted colorectal surgery can pose significant haemodynamic challenges for patients with severe aortic regurgitation. The increased afterload caused by pneumoperitoneum and aortic compression, along with concurrent factors like hypercarbia, Trendelenburg positioning and ventilatory impairment, can worsen aortic regurgitation, leading to myocardial ischaemia and heart failure. Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) assists haemodynamic management intraoperatively but requires subspecialist skills and enables limited inferences to be drawn regarding the impact of afterload on myocardial performance. Minimally invasive haemodynamic monitoring enabling real-time visualisation of a patient's 'pressure field' has been suggested as a potential adjunct or alternative to TOE, with the added advantage of providing continuous quantitative information about both stroke volume and the afterload to ventricular ejection in a single visualisation. 22. A novel method in myocardial injury risk stratification using intravenous fat emulsion as sole rapid preparation for unfasted patients to suppress myocardial 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake for optimal cardiac PET imaging: a proof-of-concept randomized-crossover trial.

Abstract

Objectives: Optimal imaging of ischemic or inflammed myocardium via 18 F-FDG PET imaging requires suppression of background carbohydrate metabolism in normal myocardium. Sole administration of intravenous lipid emulsion has not previously been used to rapidly prepare unfasted patients, such as in emergent clinical situations. In this proof-of-concept pilot, we posited that intravenous fat emulsion suppresses physiological metabolic uptake of in non-ischemic, non-inflammatory myocardium in unprepared and unfasted setting for enhanced cardiac positron emission tomography (PET) imaging., Methods: We conducted an ethics-approved, single-blind, prospective randomized crossover trial of 10 healthy volunteers from January 2020 to June 2021. Participants were unfasted and rendered hyperglycemic before being administered either high dose intravenous lipid emulsion-1.5 ml kg of 20% lipid emulsion, followed by 15 ml/kg/hr for 30mins-or saline prior to 18 F-FDG injection and subsequent cardiac PET imaging. Assessors undertook image analysis for maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax), minimum standard uptake value (SUVmin) and qualitative assessment, and groups were compared using univariate analysis., Results: The study population age was 44.5 years [IQR 32.5-56.5], with 50% male and a median BMI of 22.75 [IQR 25.0-28.5] kg/m 2 . The study was feasible and there were no adverse side effects from the interventions. In these participants with normal myocardium, 18 F-FDG uptake was reduced by intravenous lipid emulsion as assessed by SUVmax and qualitative assessment ( p  = 0.042, r  = 0.454 and p  = 0.009, r  = -0.581, respectively)., Conclusions: Intravenous lipid emulsion suppresses background metabolic uptake of 18 F-FDG even in unprepared and unfasted patients. Abstract

Preoperative assessment of functional capacity with the six-minute walk test (6MWT) allows for estimation of surgical risk and targeted triage to prehabilitation services. Patient with abdominal and pelvic cancers have worse preoperative function compared with the general population. However, six-minute walk distance (6MWD) reference values from cancer patients are unknown, which limits the interpretation of 6MWT in this population. This study aimed to establish an explanatory reference value model for preoperative 6MWD in patients with abdominal or pelvic cancers undergoing elective surgery. Adult patients undergoing surgery for abdominal or pelvic cancers at major international hospitals were included. The 6MWT was assessed before surgery using a standardised protocol. Anthropometric data including age, sex, height, weight and body mass index (BMI) were collected and included in multiple linear regression analysis to model preoperative 6MWD. A total of 742 patients were included. Age, height and BMI were correlated with 6MWD. Six regression models were estimated, including two from the entire cohort, two from the subset of males and two from the subset of females. A sex-neutral model was the most representative, explaining 15% of the variance in 6MWD (6MWD = 761.00-3.00 * Age (years) -2.86 * BMI (kg/m 2 ) - 48.09 * Sex (M1, F2)). The explored regression models, using anthropometric variables, poorly explained the variance between measured and modelled 6MWD, which suggests that these models have no clinical utility in the cancer population. 24. An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Unimodal Prehabilitation with Exercise Intervention to Enhance Postoperative Outcomes in Cancer Surgery.

Abstract

Background: The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to update the body of evidence on the efficacy of prehabilitation with exercise interventions, in reducing postoperative complications and length of hospital stay after cancer surgery., Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted on MEDLINE, Embase, The Cochrane Library, CINAHL, AMED, and PsycINFO to identify randomized controlled trials investigating the impact of prehabilitation with exercise interventions for patients undergoing cancer surgery. Primary and secondary outcomes assessed were postoperative complications and length of hospital stay, respectively. Risk of bias was evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias tool, and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) methodology was used to determine the strength of evidence. Relative risk and mean difference were calculated using random-effects meta-analysis., Results: In this updated review, 32 trials (n = 2304 participants) were identified, with 5 trials focused on patients undergoing surgery for genitourinary cancer (n = 422 participants), 9 for lower gastrointestinal cancer (n = 639 participants), 6 for upper gastrointestinal cancer (n = 526), and 11 for lung cancer (n = 717 participants). The majority of included trials exhibited some risk of bias. Evidence of low-to-moderate quality indicated that prehabilitation with preoperative exercise significantly reduced postoperative complication rates by approximately 50% and decreased the length of hospital stay by 2.5 days in patients undergoing lung resection. Preoperative exercise did not demonstrate effectiveness in reducing postoperative complications or length of hospital stay for other cancer populations., Conclusions: Evidence supports the efficacy of prehabilitation with exercise in reducing postoperative complications and length of hospital stay in patients undergoing lung cancer surgery. 25. Release kinetics of growth factors loaded into β-TCP ceramics in an in vitro model.

Abstract

Introduction: β-TCP ceramics are bone replacement materials that have recently been tested as a drug delivery system that can potentially be applied to endogenous substances like growth factors found in blood platelets to facilitate positive attributes., Methods: In this work, we used flow chamber loading to load β-TCP dowels with blood suspensions of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), platelet-poor plasma (PPP), or buffy coat (BC) character. PRP and BC platelet counts were adjusted to the same level by dilution. Concentrations of TGF-β1, PDGF-AB, and IGF-1 from dowel-surrounding culture medium were subsequently determined using ELISA over 5 days. The influence of alginate was additionally tested to modify the release., Results: Concentrations of TGF-β1 and PDGF-AB increased and conclusively showed a release from platelets in PRP and BC compared to PPP. The alginate coating reduced the PDGF-AB release but did not reduce TGF-β1 and instead even increased TGF-β1 in the BC samples. IGF-1 concentrations were highest in PPP, suggesting circulating levels rather than platelet release as the driving factor. Alginate samples tended to have lower IGF-1 concentrations, but the difference was not shown to be significant., Discussion: The release of growth factors from different blood suspensions was successfully demonstrated for β-TCP as a drug delivery system with release patterns that correspond to PRP activation after Ca 2+ -triggered activation. Abstract

Background: Cardiovascular disease, including hypertension, in pregnant women is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. The development of reference intervals for cardiovascular responses using exercising testing to measure oxygen utilisation (V̇O 2 ) with cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), and distances walked using the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT), may be promising methods to assess and stratify pregnant women regarding their risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, to encourage exercise during pregnancy, and to improve exercise prescriptions during pregnancy. We aimed to determine the reference intervals for V̇O 2 at rest, anaerobic threshold (AT), and submaximal exercise using CPET, and the reference interval for the ISWT, to develop a correlation equitation that predicts submaximal V̇O 2 from the distance walked in the ISWT, and to explore the relationship between hemoglobin (Hb) and ferritin concentration and V̇O 2 at AT in women in second trimester., Methods: After prospective IRB approval (HREC 15/23) and clinical trials registration (ANZCTR ACTRN12615000964516), and informed written consent, we conducted CPET and the ISWT according to international guidelines in a university associated tertiary referral obstetric and adult medicine hospital, in healthy pregnant women in second trimester (14 to 27 gestational weeks). Hemoglobin and ferritin concentrations were recorded from pathology results in the participants' medical records at the time of exercise testing. Adverse events were recorded., Results: About 90 participants undertook CPET, 28 of which also completed the ISWT. The mean ± SD age and body mass index (BMI) were 32 ± 3.2 years, and 25 ± 2.7 kg/m 2 . Median (IQR) gestation was 23 (22-24) weeks. One in 4 women were 24 weeks or greater gestation. The reference intervals for V̇O 2 at rest, AT, and submaximal exercise were 2.9 to 5.3, 8.1 to 20.7, and 14.1 to 30.5 mL/kg/min respectively. The reference interval for the ISWT was 218 to 1058 meters. The correlation equation to predict submaximal V̇O 2 from the distance walked in the ISWT was submaximal V̇O 2 (mL/kg/min) = 0.012*distance walked in ISWT (m) + 14.7 (95%CI slope 0.005-0.070, Pearson r = 0.5426 95%CI 0.2126-0.7615, P = .0029). Hemoglobin concentration was positively correlated with V̇O 2 at AT (AT V̇O 2 (mL/kg/min) = 0.08*Hb (g/L) + 4.9 (95%CI slope 0.0791-0.143, Pearson r = 0.2538 95%CI 0.049-0.438, P = .016). There was no linear association between ferritin and submaximal V̇O 2 (Pearson r = 0.431 P = .697). There were no maternal or fetal complications., Conclusions: CPET and ISWT are safe and feasible in women in second trimester including those at or beyond 24 weeks gestation. We have established the reference interval for V̇O 2 at rest, AT, and submaximal exercise by CPET, the reference interval for the distance walked for the ISWT, and a correlation equation to predict submaximal V̇O 2 for use in clinical practice and research. Abstract

Introduction: The views of patients and carers are important for the development of research priorities. This study aimed to determine and compare the top research priorities of cancer patients and carers with those of multidisciplinary clinicians with expertise in prehabilitation., Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study surveyed patients recovering from cancer surgery at a major tertiary hospital in Sydney, Australia, and/or their carers between March and July 2023. Consenting patients and carers were provided a list of research priorities according to clinicians with expertise in prehabilitation, as determined in a recent International Delphi study. Participants were asked to rate the importance of each research priority using a 5-item Likert scale (ranging from 1 = very high research priority to 5 = very low research priority)., Results: A total of 101 patients and 50 carers participated in this study. Four areas were identified as research priorities, achieving consensus of highest importance (> 70% rated as "high" or "very high" priority) by patients, carers, and clinical experts. These were "optimal composition of prehabilitation programs" (77% vs. 82% vs. 88%), "effect of prehabilitation on surgical outcomes" (85% vs. 90% vs. 95%), "effect of prehabilitation on functional outcomes" (83% vs. 86% vs. 79%), and "effect of prehabilitation on patient reported outcomes" (78% vs. 84% vs. 79%). Priorities that did not reach consensus of high importance by patients despite reaching consensus of highest importance by experts included "identifying populations most likely to benefit from prehabilitation" (70% vs. 76% vs. 90%) and "defining prehabilitation core outcome measures" (66% vs. 74% vs. 87%). "Prehabilitation during neoadjuvant therapies" reached consensus of high importance by patients but not by experts or carers (81% vs. 68% vs. 69%)., Conclusion: This study delineated the primary prehabilitation research priorities as determined by patients and carers, against those previously identified by clinicians with expertise in prehabilitation. Abstract

β-TCP ceramics are versatile bone substitute materials and show many interactions with cells of the monocyte-macrophage-lineage. The possibility of monocytes entering microporous β-TCP ceramics has however not yet been researched. In this study, we used a model approach to investigate whether monocytes might enter β-TCP, providing a possible explanation for the origin of CD68-positive osteoclast-like giant cells found in earlier works.We used flow chambers to unidirectionally load BC, PRP, or PPP into slice models of either 2 mm or 6 mm β-TCP. Immunofluorescence for CD68 and live/dead staining was performed after the loading process.Our results show that monocytes were present in a relevant number of PRP and BC slices representing the inside of our 2 mm slice model and also present on the actual inside of our 6 mm model. For PPP, monocytes were not found beyond the surface in either model.Our results indicate the possibility of a new and so far neglected constituent in β-TCP degradation, perhaps causing the process of ceramic degradation also starting from inside the ceramics as opposed to the current understanding. 31. Awareness for artifacts in fluorescence microscopy of β-TCP.

Abstract

Fluorescence analysis of β-TCP ceramics is often used to describe cells found on said ceramics. However, we found, to our knowledge, so far undescribed artifacts which might sometimes be hard to differentiate from cells due to shape and fluorescence behavior. We tried prolonged ultrasound washing as well as Technovit 9100 fixation to reduce these artifacts. While untreated dowels showed no reduction in artifacts no matter the further treatment, Technovit fixation reduced the artifacts with even further reduction achieved by mechanical cleaning. As a consequence, scientists working with these dowels and likely even other types should try to avoid creating false positive results by considering the existence of these artifacts, checking additional filters for unusual fluorescence and by reducing them by using Technovit fixation when possible., (© 2024. 32. Mechanical and histological properties of native medial menisci compared to allograph medial menisci in the osteoarthritic knee.

Abstract

This study was designed to provide information on how the menisci change over the course of osteoarthritis, particularly with regard to their mechanical properties. The aim was to determine the difference between healthy menisci (fresh frozen meniscal transplants) and menisci harvested during total knee arthroplasty. The latter allows the grading of age-related and osteoarthritic changes in the menisci on macroscopic and microscopic levels. A total of 10 menisci from arthritic knee joints (medial) harvested during total knee arthroplasty were used and compared with 10 medial fresh frozen meniscal transplants. The mechanical measurements were carried out on a Mach-1 testing machine using indentation testing to determine the instantaneous modulus and the thickness of the menisci. The specimens were then embedded in paraffin, sectioned on a microtome, and stained with hematoxylin-eosin and safranin-O. All measurements were divided into the anterior horn, pars intermedia, and posterior horn. There was no significant difference in the instantaneous modulus for the posterior horn in the fresh frozen menisci with 0.27 ± 0.1 MPa compared to the arthritic menisci with 0.18 ± 0.03 MPa. No significant difference could be determined for the meniscus thicknesses. There was a significant difference in the safranin-O staining. There were also significant differences in the Pauli score: the arthrosis menisci showed a sum score that was, on average, four times higher than the sum score of the fresh frozen menisci. In the present study, it could be shown very well that there are significant differences in the mechanical properties as well as in the macroscopic and histopathological scores, such as the Pauli score, between the fresh frozen meniscus allografts considered healthy and osteoarthritic menisci resulting from total knee arthroplasty. With a degradation score of 3 (Pauli), the instantaneous modulus was reduced by more than 50% compared to healthy controls. More importantly, however, the fresh frozen menisci only show a grade 2 when converting the sum values into grades, where a grade 2 indicates slight degeneration. Abstract

We report on a measurement of astrophysical tau neutrinos with 9.7 yr of IceCube data. Using convolutional neural networks trained on images derived from simulated events, seven candidate ν&#95;{τ} events were found with visible energies ranging from roughly 20 TeV to 1 PeV and a median expected parent ν&#95;{τ} energy of about 200 TeV. Considering backgrounds from astrophysical and atmospheric neutrinos, and muons from π^{±}/K^{±} decays in atmospheric air showers, we obtain a total estimated background of about 0.5 events, dominated by non-ν&#95;{τ} astrophysical neutrinos. Thus, we rule out the absence of astrophysical ν&#95;{τ} at the 5σ level. The measured astrophysical ν&#95;{τ} flux is consistent with expectations based on previously published IceCube astrophysical neutrino flux measurements and neutrino oscillations.

Abstract

Self-perceived learning outcomes of virtual academic detailing (AD) are poorly studied. We compared self-perceived learning outcomes of virtual and in-person AD among general practitioners (GPs). GPs from the Western region of Norway received a questionnaire before and after AD concerning rational pharmacotherapy of migraine in the autumn 2022. Five statements addressing specific knowledge and two statements addressing general knowledge and skills in pharmacotherapy of migraine were rated in both questionnaires. A 7-point Likert scale ranging from 1: Strongly disagree to 7: Strongly agree was applied to all the statements. Histograms that showed the difference in the mean composite scores before and after AD were used to compare learning outcomes of virtual and in-person AD. Positive self-perceived learning outcomes were observed among 80%-88% of the GPs. No significant differences between virtual and in-person AD were observed., (© 2023 The Authors. Abstract

Two methods for administering general anaesthesia are widely used: propofol-based total intravenous anaesthesia (propofol-TIVA) and inhalation volatile agent-based anaesthesia. Both modalities, which have been standards of care for several decades, boast a robust safety profile. Nevertheless, the potential differential effects of these anaesthetic techniques on immediate, intermediate, and extended postoperative outcomes remain a subject of inquiry. We discuss a recently published longitudinal analysis stemming from a multicentre randomised controlled trial comparing sevoflurane-based inhalation anaesthesia with propofol-TIVA in older patients with cancer, which showed a reduced incidence of emergence and postoperative delirium, comparable postoperative complication rates within 30 days after surgery, and comparable long-term survival rates. We undertake an assessment of the trial's methodological strengths and limitations, contextualise its results within the broader scientific evidence, and explore avenues for resolving the extant controversies in anaesthetic choice for cancer surgery.
