Abstract Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus) have demonstrated prolific spread and low detectability within their invasive range in Florida, USA. Consequently, programs exist which incentivize contractors to remove pythons. While surveying, contractors collect data on search effort and python captures. We examined data from South Florida Water Management District’s Python Elimination Program to determine the effect of operational and environmental covariates on two measures of survey outcome: success (i.e., probability of removing at least one python) and efficiency (i.e., the number of pythons removed per survey hour). Additionally, we assessed the spatial distribution of contractor search effort and removals. Warm temperatures (> 25 °C) improve survey outcomes, especially when surveys occur late at night and during the wet season (May–Oct). The most efficient interval for conducting surveys occurs from 20:00 to 02:00. The spatial distribution of python removals is concentrated in four regions and coincides with contractor search effort. Our results provide insights into optimizing removal efforts for invasive Burmese pythons in Florida, which may allow for increases in removal efficiency. Moreover, this study demonstrates that community science data can be used to synthesize recommendations for invasive species removal efforts.

Space-time wave packets (STWPs) are a new class of pulsed optical beams with many unique and intriguing attributes, including propagation invariance and tunable group velocity in linear optical media. STWPs are a form of spatiotemporally structured light, so their synthesis poses challenges that are not shared by conventional monochromatic structured light fields. We present here a detailed description of the synthesis of STWPs that are localized along one transverse dimension and uniform along the other; i.e. space-time light sheets. Pediatric pulmonary hypertension is a heterogeneous disease associated with significant morbidity and mortality. MicroRNAs have been implicated as both pathologic drivers of disease and potential therapeutic targets in pediatric pulmonary hypertension. We sought to characterize the circulating microRNA profiles of a diverse array of pediatric patients with pulmonary hypertension using high-throughput sequencing technology. Peripheral blood samples were drawn from patients recruited at the time of a clinically indicated cardiac catheterization, and microRNA sequencing followed by differential expression and target/pathway enrichment analyses were performed. Among 63 pediatric patients with pulmonary hypertension, we identified specific microRNA signatures that uniquely classified patients by disease subtype, correlated with indicators of disease severity including invasive hemodynamic metrics, and changed over the course of treatment for pulmonary hypertension. These microRNA profiles include a number of specific microRNA molecules known to function in signaling pathways critical to pulmonary vascular biology and disease, including transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), VEGF, PI3K/Akt, cGMP-PKG, and HIF-1 signaling. Circulating levels of miR-122-5p, miR-124-3p, miR-204-5p, and miR-9-5p decreased over the course of treatment in a subset of patients who had multiple samples drawn during the study period. Our findings support the further investigation of specific microRNAs as mechanistic mediators, biomarkers, and therapeutic targets in pulmonary hypertension. Simple Summary: Sarcomas are rare types of cancer that originate from various tissues such as fat, muscle, bone, nerves, blood vessels and connective tissues. Typically, the treatment of sarcomas consists of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. The location, type, stage, and treatment of sarcomas contribute to the development of physical impairments affecting joint and limb function, peripheral nerves, strength, and mobility, diminishing physical function and quality of life. Traditionally, rehabilitative therapy has been implemented after cancer treatment to help improve physical impairments imparted from cancer therapy. This review article aims to examine the physical impairments commonly seen in patients living with sarcoma during and after cancer therapy and their treatment utilizing rehabilitative interventions to improve the physical function and quality of life of those affected by it.
