Emissions from internal combustion engine vehicles on highways are the major contributors to global warming in the United States. Transportation sector pavement-related emissions come from gasolines and diesel use in vehicles from pavement-vehicle interaction, which is affected by pavement conditions, and by the trucking of new pavement materials and demolition. The objective of this study was to develop a framework for determining the fuel use resulting in environmental impacts caused by construction work zones (CWZs) on a range of vehicles and to produce initial calculations of these impacts by modeling traffic closure conditions for highway maintenance and rehabilitation activities. The study included two common highway categories—freeways/multi-lane highways and two-lane highways. The framework was demonstrated using three CWZ operations under different traffic congestion levels. In the simulation results for a freeway with a CWZ and heavy congestion, fuel consumption increased by 85% and the carbon-dioxide equivalent emissions increased by 86%. Changing CWZ traffic congestion from heavy (average speed 5 mph) to medium (average speed 25 mph for a freeway section) reduced fuel consumption by 40% on a freeway. This study also included use of a pilot car in a CWZ on a two-lane road typical of lower traffic volume state highways and county roads to compare with the drive cycles in MOVES used for the scenarios. The pilot-car operation scenario results indicate that a one-lane closure with pilot-car operation on a two-lane road might consume 13% excess fuel because of idling time and the slow movement of vehicles following the pilot car. Sustainable operation of tunnel drainage without shaft covers in the roadway A well‐planned drainage system for the road infrastructure and its integrated engineering structures contributes decisively to the traffic safety in road construction. Simultaneously, a carefully engineered drainage system in conjunction with suitable materials and constructions reduces the maintenance costs in the long term, thus ensuring a smooth operation of the system. The ease of cleaning of the system plays a major part in reducing road blocking time related associated to maintenance or repair works. In tunnels in particular, the drainage systems regularly cause closures precisely due to maintenance and repair works. Damages occur regularly, particularly in areas of permanent overrun of inspection shafts, and repairing them leads often to time‐consuming road closures. In order to reduce the resulting costs to a minimum, the use of a modified baffle shaft at the edge of the carriageway should make it possible to operate and maintain the drainage pipe without a manhole cover in the carriageway. Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are being developed and designed to operate on existing roads. Their safe and efficient operation during roadworks, where traffic management measures are often introduced, is crucial. Two alternative measures are commonly applied during roadworks on motorways: (i) closing one or multiple lanes (ii) narrowing one or all lanes. The former can cause delays and increased emissions, while the latter can pose safety risks. This study uses a VISSIM‐based traffic microsimulation to compare the effectiveness of these two strategies on traffic efficiency and safety, considering various market penetration rates (MPR) of CAVs. The model was calibrated and validated with the data collected from M1 motorway in the United Kingdom. Results show that average delays per vehicle‐kilometre‐travelled decreased from 102.7 to 2.5 s (with lane closure) and 23.6 to 0.6 s (with narrow lanes) with 0% and 100% CAV MPR, respectively. Moreover, safety in narrow lanes improved by 4.8 times compared to 1.5 times improvement in lane closure with a 100% CAV MPR; indicating that narrow lanes would result in better safety performance. Harvest regulations commonly attenuate the consequences of hunting on specific segments of a population. However, regulations may not protect individuals from non‐lethal effects of hunting and their consequences remain poorly understood. In this study, we compared the movement rates of Scandinavian brown bears (Ursus arctos, n = 47) across spatiotemporal variations in risk in relation to the onset of bear hunting. We tested two alternative hypotheses based on whether behavioural responses to hunting involve hiding or escaping. If bears try to reduce risk exposure by avoiding being detected by hunters, we expect individuals from all demographic groups to reduce their movement rate during the hunting season. On the other hand, if bears avoid hunters by escaping, we expect them to increase their movement rate in order to leave high‐risk areas faster. We found an increased movement rate in females accompanied by dependent offspring during the morning hours of the bear hunting season, a general decrease in movement rate in adult lone females, and no changes in males and subadult females. The increased movement rate that we observed in females with dependant offspring during the hunting season was likely an antipredator response because it only occurred in areas located closer to roads, whereas the decreased movement rate in lone females could be either part of seasonal activity patterns or be associated with an increased selection for better concealment. Our study suggests that female brown bears accompanied by offspring likely move faster in high‐risk areas to minimize risk exposure as well as the costly trade‐offs (i.e. time spent foraging vs. time spent hiding) typically associated with anti‐predator tactics that involve changes in resource selection. Our study also highlights the importance of modelling fine‐scale spatiotemporal variations in risk to adequately capture the complexity in behavioural responses caused by human activities in wildlife. With renewed interest in the optimisation of the hydraulic performance of new and existing culverts, particularly relevant to South Africa's evolving road network and anticipated climate-induced rainfall changes, this research investigated the benefit of angled wingwall and headwall combinations and considered the installation of a ventilation device in order to improve culvert performances. Through experimental modelling at the University of Pretoria Water Laboratory, the angled wingwall and headwall combinations demonstrated significant flow improvements compared to square inlets. It was also demonstrated that a ventilation device could cause flow through culverts to flow under inlet control conditions where it would otherwise have flowed under outlet control conditions. Additionally, the study proposes design coefficient adjustments for square inlet culverts operating under inlet control conditions. The proposed improvements can be applied during design stages, but the findings also propose prefabricated inlet elements as cost-effective solutions for existing culverts, thereby facilitating quick upgrades without the need for lengthy road closures while potentially enabling benefits for pedestrian traffic. Ultimately, this study underscores the potential of innovative and novel design modifications to enhance culvert performance, offering sustainable and economical alternatives to conventional replacement practices while advancing hydraulic engineering resilience in response to evolving infrastructural and environmental demands. A challenge for management of wildlife species is the assessment of the effect of roads on migration. We developed models to estimate the spatial (zone of influence (ZOI)) and temporal (delays in migration) effects of roads, and test whether road closures reduced delays in migration. We analyzed collar (2011–2019) and road survey data from two barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus (Borowski, 1780)) herds to assess the impact of a 171 km mine road that bisects their migration corridor. We estimated ZOIs of 16–17 km prior to crossing the road during 2018 and 2019, and 3.0 km after crossing. Estimates of mean delay were 4.3 and 2.5 days for 2018 and 2019, which were reduced by 28%–68% (1.2–1.7 days) if roads were closed when caribou were within the ZOI. In 2017–2018, when the road was extended 64 km north, caribou were 12% less likely to deflect north around the road, therefore increasing delays. Road surveys indicated aggregation of caribou prior to crossing the road, with few caribou observed after crossing, a finding supported by collar data. Quantifying the atmospheric water balance is critical for the study of hydrological processes in significant regions. This study quantified atmospheric water balance closure at 205 stations in mainland China on a monthly timescale from 2009 to 2018 using datasets from ground- and satellite-based observations and reanalysis data. The closure performances were firstly quantified using the mean and root mean square (RMS) of the residuals, and the possible influencing factors were explored, as well as the influence of different water balance components (WBCs) using different datasets. In the closure experiment using ERA5, the mean and residuals were 6.26 and 12.39 mm/month, respectively, on average, which indicated a closure uncertainty of 12.8%. Using ERA5 analysis as a reference, the closure experiment using different combinations revealed average mean residuals of 8.73, 11.50, and 15.89 mm/month, indicating a precipitation closure uncertainty of 22.0, 23.7, and 24.4% for the ground- and satellite-based observations and reanalysis data, respectively. Two possible influencing factors, station latitude and the climatic zone in which the station is located, were shown to be related to closure performance. Finally, the analysis of the impact from different WBCs showed that precipitation tended to have the most significant impact, which may have been due to larger observation uncertainties. Accidents can have a significant impact on road safety and the efficiency of transport. With the ever-increasing number of vehicles on the road, it is crucial to quickly detect and respond to such events to decrease the impact. The current paper presents a road accident and incident detection solution utilizing traffic API monitoring and continuously analyzing real-time traffic data from various sources like GPS-enabled devices. Consequently, the proposed approach can identify abnormal patterns in the movement of vehicles, such as unexpected road closures or an accident. It numerically analyzes the traffic pattern and identifies incidents and accidents using live traffic data collected from the map service. When the approach identifies any abnormality, it can immediately let the user know, allowing them to act accordingly. It can facilitate authorities in identifying accident-prone areas and deploy safety measures. This can help law enforcement agencies to identify drivers at risk of causing accidents and implement education and enforcement programs targeted towards them. A railway level crossing is a risk area despite installations of the warning signal and arm gate that indicate a train approach. Accidents may nevertheless occur if vehicle drivers violate or fail to conform to the rules. Such action is considered a risk behavior that may cause severe collision, injury, and death. Thus, the driver behaviors are the key factors causing accidents. The objective of this study was thus to investigate the risk behaviors and the factors influencing above behaviors. These behaviors were recorded by a high-resolution video camera and the initial data analysis was based on descriptive statistics. An in-depth analysis of the factors influencing the risk behaviors was performed by using Pearson Chi-square technique and Binary Logistic Regression Analysis. The results showed that the railway crossing behaviors of more than half of the drivers under the study were the risk-taking, followed by opportunistic violation. Most violations occurred during the beginning of the warning signal. Overall, the motorcycle riders were found to be the group with greater chance of violating across the railway during the warning signal than the 4-wheeled vehicle drivers. Especially, during the period between the beginning of the warning signal and the complete arm gate closure, as well as the greater width of the crossing road. This could be due to the higher agility and evasive capability of motorcycle riders than 4-wheeled drivers. Additionally, this study recommends approaches to initially prevent or reduce this risky behavior and can serve as a guideline for enhancing areas with physical characteristics similar to the study area. In 2021, eight counties in Southeast Texas formed a non‐tax authority flood control partnership to provide a forum for communication, create a regional database and improve flood modeling, early warning, and flood mitigation decisions. This partnership is able to successfully deploy and manage an early warning flood system network at relatively low‐cost by: (i) assigning the university as technical expert and general network administrator so that no additional agency workforce is required to operate and maintain the system, (ii) the flood monitoring system is a simple system and (iii) the data was able to be displayed in real‐time using an existing web‐based dashboard owned and operated by another agency within the partnership. The low‐cost sensors are lightweight and easily mountable which allowed them to be rapidly deployed within a short period of time (73 sensor sites installed within 7‐month window) over a 6000 square mile area. The data is shared with the public, and local, state, and federal agencies to monitor drainage infrastructure, and provide the community with flash flood and roadway closure alerts. With the acceleration of urbanization and the impact of climate change, the frequent occurrence of urban waterlogging not only leads to road closures and traffic congestion but also severely affects the timeliness of urban emergency rescue. To accurately assess and enhance the response capability of urban emergency rescue under storm-induced waterlogging scenarios, a hydrodynamic model of urban waterlogging was developed to simulate waterlogging conditions under various design rainfall scenarios. By identifying road waterlogging risks and blocked roads, as well as combining the Two-Step Floating Catchment Area (2SFCA) method, the accessibility of emergency rescue services for points of interest (POIs) with different vulnerabilities was evaluated. The Liwan District of Guangzhou City was selected as a case study for accessibility impact assessment and improvement simulation. The results indicate that with the increase in the return period of rainfall, both the area and depth of waterlogged regions increased and the number of roads affected by waterlogging rose, leading to an increase in the length of blocked roads from 11 km to 49 km, an increase of over 300%. Additionally, the number of POIs inaccessible to emergency rescue increased, while the number of accessible POIs decreased, resulting in a significant downward trend in overall accessibility. By deploying mobile pumping vehicles, the depth and area of waterlogging under different rainfall return periods were reduced by over 10%, the number of blocked roads decreased by more than 10%, and the number of accessible POIs increased by more than 12%. The findings highlight that storm-induced waterlogging not only hinders traffic flow but also reduces the response capability of emergency rescue services. Through the strategic deployment of mobile pumping vehicles, the accessibility of urban emergency rescue services under waterlogging conditions can be effectively improved, mitigating the impact of waterlogging on urban functions and public safety. Integrating both proactive and reactive risk-mitigation mechanisms, this research constructs a bi-level network design problem for hazardous materials (hazmats) to regulate the carriers' use of roads, such that the environmental impact is minimized. In more detail, by embedding the emergency response time into the risk assessment, the locations of hazmat response teams are determined along with toll schemes, road closures, and new road constructions. The uncertainties of demand, including differences in the number of shipments, origin/destination changes, and amount variations, are also taken into account by applying a scenario-based approach. The proposed bi-level model is first solved optimally by a single-level reformulation, and then by a three-stage heuristic method for larger instances. Through numerical experiments on a real-world road network in Nanchang, a city in China, a set of management insights are derived to facilitate policy-making in regulating hazmat transportation. Evacuation planning and emergency routing systems are crucial in saving lives during disasters. Traditional emergency routing systems, despite their best efforts, often struggle to accurately capture the dynamic nature of flood conditions, road closures, and other real-time changes inherent in urban disaster logistics. This paper introduces the ReinforceRouting model, a novel approach to optimizing evacuation routes using reinforcement learning (RL). The model incorporates a unique RL environment that considers multiple criteria, such as traffic conditions, hazardous situations, and the availability of safe routes. The RL agent in this model learns optimal actions through interaction with the environment, receiving feedback in the form of rewards or penalties. The ReinforceRouting model excels in executing prompt and accurate route planning on large road networks, outperforming traditional RL algorithms and shortest-path-based algorithms. A higher safety score and episode reward of the model are demonstrated when compared to these classical methods. This innovative approach to disaster evacuation planning offers a promising avenue for enhancing the efficiency, safety, and reliability of emergency responses in dynamic urban environments. One of the most common problems mining companies face in developing open-cut deposits in complicated geological and climatic conditions is avalanches during the spring-winter work period. This phenomenon is accompanied by a rapid displacement of snow masses, which can lead to catastrophic consequences. In this regard, the article aims to develop a modernized set of measures for avalanche protection. Prevention of avalanches of catastrophic scale, leading to blockages, road closures, and accidents, and the introduction of measures to reduce accidents and injuries in quarries and dumps, is a time-consuming task that requires serious approaches to its solution. The main research method is analyzing the applied anti-avalanche measures for active impact on snow cover and considering the possibility of using safer methods for active impact on avalanches at a particular mining enterprise. This approach allows for the evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of the avalanche measures used and for choosing a set of measures to ensure more effective avalanche protection. The authors analyzed the existing shortcomings in the regulatory documents related to the provision of avalanche protection and antiavalanche measures. It was found that they are not able to effectively ensure the development of internal local documents of enterprises in the field of anti-avalanche measures at the present stage. The resulting study showed that a comprehensive solution to the problem is needed through the introduction of several antiavalanche devices to reduce the likelihood of avalanches of catastrophic scale. For the first time, the authors attempted to justify the possibility of using a modernized set of measures for the preliminary descent of snow avalanches to solve the problem of avalanche protection in the conditions of a real mountain object. The results obtained can be used to reduce the level of occupational injuries by reducing or eliminating accidents associated with unforeseen avalanches during the operation of an existing quarry. Wild turkeys Meleagris gallopavo are diurnally active birds that spend the dark hours roosting in trees. We tested the hypothesis that multiple benefits exist for roost tree selection by wild turkeys, including thermoregulation, resource acquisition, and protection from predators. We compared 48 roost trees used by eastern wild turkeys M. g. silvestris in Ontario, Canada to 48 non‐roost trees sampled contemporaneously during 2017–2019 to determine roost site selection between seasons. Mean (± SE) roost tree height (21.4 ± 0.8 m) was taller than non‐roost trees (18.2 ± 0.8 m), and roost trees were also larger in diameter at breast height (58.1 ± 5.5 vs 38.7 ± 3.1 cm). Using ibuttons to collect microclimate temperatures at the tree, we found that mean temperature (± SE) of a deciduous roost (14.5 ± 0.1°C) was higher than temperature at either a coniferous roost (13.9 ± 0.1°C) or ambient temperature (13.2 ± 0.1°C) during the summer months. In winter however, we did not find any relationship between temperature and tree type. Roosts were closer to buildings (150.8 ± 26.0 m) in the winter compared to summer and year‐round roosts, and winter roosts were also farther away from crops (395.2 ± 63.7 m) compared to roost sites used year‐round. Summer roosts were closer to roads (143 ± 36.3 m) than the roosts in the winter and roosts used year‐round. Our data suggest that thermoregulation is not the driving force behind roost selection; instead, predator avoidance appears to play the most important role, with some weaker evidence in support of proximity to resources. Human activities and infrastructures can disturb wildlife and alter their behaviour by triggering antipredator responses such as changes in time allocation to different behaviours. For instance, disturbance sources like traffic can cause significant variation in allocation of time to vigilance and foraging behaviours, which can be used as sensitive measures of the effects of human disturbance on animals. Such changes may ultimately result in physiological and ecological costs for the species. We used a unique opportunity to obtain direct behavioural observations of European wildcats, Felis silvestris , in the Cantabrian Mountains (northwest Spain) to investigate how different sources of anthropogenic disturbance influence time allocation of wildcats to specific behaviours. We also analysed how traffic affects hunting and vigilance time budgets as well as hunting success. We found that wildcats allocated more time to being alert and less time to hunting, feeding and moving in the presence of humans than in undisturbed situations. Wildcats also allocated more time to hunting when traffic levels were high, near roads and further from villages. Similarly, they dedicated more time to vigilance behaviours while feeding in the presence of moving vehicles. Finally, hunting success in the presence of vehicles seemed to decrease more for female wildcats than for males although this effect was not significant. In conclusion, humans and traffic influence the behaviour of wildcats inhabiting pastoral anthropogenic landscapes, although it is difficult to know to what extent such changes may translate into demographic effects. • Human presence increased time spent alert and reduced foraging behaviour. • Wildcats spent more time hunting in scenarios with high traffic and closer to roads. • Wildcats increased vigilance time while foraging in the presence of vehicles. • Hunting success was not significantly influenced by the presence of vehicles. • Humans and traffic affect wildcat behaviour in pastoral landscapes. This correction notice provides corrected versions of tables in an article titled "Association of risk perception and transport mode choice during the temporary closure of a major inner-city road bridge: results of a cross-sectional study." The tables include data on the main mode of transport before and during the bridge closure, bridge use frequency and group of mode choice, and frequencies and percentages of different groups in the study. Over a period of 2 years, we noted that many large mammals in the Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda, remained fairly close to the road--rather than running away--as we drove past at a relatively slow speed, of about 20-25 kph. We consider that over recent years, many of these animals have become habituated to tourist vehicles passing nearby and we recorded the minimum distances at which nine common species remained at, or close to the road edge as we drove past. Reduced order models with a-priori unknown closure relations are ubiquitous in transport problems. In this work, we present a machine-learning approach to finding closure relations utilising differentiable programming. We use the Su Olson radiation transport test problem as an example training data set. We present novel closures for second angular moment (variable Eddington factor), third angular moment and flux-limited diffusion models. We evaluate the improvement of the machine-learnt closures over those from the literature. These improvements are then tested by considering a modification to the Su Olson problem. Post-hurricane accessibility to critical facilities is crucial for accelerating the recovery process, which can often be disrupted by hurricane-induced flooding. The State of Florida is especially vulnerable to flooding accompanied by hurricanes, which leads to significant roadway closures and accessibility challenges that require special attention. As such, this research aims to analyze changes in accessibility to critical facilities due to Hurricane Irma-induced flooding. Accordingly, this research aims to compare the average accessibility changes to critical facilities for vulnerable populations, including older people, disabled people, and older people with a disability with the general population. To accomplish these goals, flood mapping was done by analyzing Sentinel-1 images before and after Hurricane Irma (2017) using Google Earth Engine. The accessibility change from block groups to critical facilities was analyzed using a cumulative opportunities approach in GIS, considering flooded areas as the barriers, which were later aggregated to the county level. Finally, employing the population-weighted average accessibility method, a comparison of accessibility change of vulnerable and general populations was conducted. The result shows that 1193.80 square km of areas in 43 counties of Florida, mostly in the southern portions, were affected by flooding after Hurricane Irma. Later, the accessibility changes to critical facilities considering 15-min and 30-min travel time thresholds are presented and visualized. The county-wise change in accessibility of vulnerable and general populations was also computed. This research improves the realism of Level 3 probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) for nuclear power plants (NPPs) to avoid subjective expert judgement by modeling the evacuation behavior of the residents and making two advancements. First, evacuation speed taken from a transportation simulation code was used as an input to the Level 3 PRA code, i.e., the MELCOR Accident Consequence Code System (MACCS). The transportation simulation code uses the Multiagent Transport Simulation (MATSim) evacuation extension software. MATSim is interfaced with MACCS, by generating input-output communication through evacuation routes and speed distributions. Integrating the agent-based transportation simulation with the Level 3 PRA code enables the explicit incorporation of spatiotemporal evacuation processes into NPP offsite risk assessment. Second, this research is the first to explicitly incorporate the probability of seismic damage to roadway bridges into Level 3 PRA of NPPs. The likelihood of seismic bridge damage, given an earthquake, is estimated using the HAZUS program developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The road closure due to seismic damage, estimated by HAZUS, is used as input to the agent-based transportation simulation, where evacuation routes and speed distributions are calculated considering the impact of seismic damage. These advancements can improve the realism of Level 3 PRA for NPPs by enhancing the evacuation analysis resolution and reducing the reliance on subjective judgment to characterize evacuation routes, speed, and seismic impact on Level 3 PRA. Integrating the transportation simulation and the natural hazard risk assessment with the Level 3 PRA code can also provide more in-depth causal insights for offsite risk management, such as recommending optimal evacuation routes in an emergency response plan. These contributions are demonstrated using the Sequoyah NPP case study adopted from the state-of-the-art reactor consequence analyses (SOARCA) conducted by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). A comparative with-and-without simulation-based GHG emissions change estimation methodology is proposed for estimating the changes in roadway transportation-related GHG emissions, a key contributor to climate change, from repairs required to mitigate damage and the execution of adaptations taken to prevent future damage. Riverine flooding from precipitation, coastal flooding from surge and high tide, and pavement deterioration from high temperatures and dry conditions are considered. A GHG emissions-based link criticality index is developed for identifying links for proactive adaptations. The tool provides insights for climate impact reduction policy creation and evaluation, and can aid in assessing the effectiveness of roadway infrastructure investment plans for combatting climate change effects. The methodology is illustrated on a case study in Northern Virginia. The results uncover how climate change events and actions taken can exacerbate conditions that accelerate climate change in the long term. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
